This book is fun, interesting, catchy and leaves a big question mark in your head about what will happen next to Bernard Wheel and the Lake Elsinore Boys. This book also reminds you that you can do anything if you believe, or in other words, you can do anything with mind over matter. The book hypnotizes you to read more and more. It is the kind of book you can read over and over according to my son, who is a fifth grader.

Children are fascinated by this beautifully illustrated picture book about a homeless young girl who discovers a house where birds gather. Cynthia Rylant's beautiful prose makes this an excellent read-aloud.It has been a favorite in our school library, and has led to many interesting discussions and written responses.

An essential reference work for Blake scholarship.

Prophet? Madman? Or philosopher? The mythological characters in William Blake's prophetic poetry present a conundrum for the reader who confronts these characters with the traditional literary expectations of a symbolic reading. Indeed, the vanguard of contemporary criticism would argue that the very complexity of Blake's mythology precludes an all inclusive schemata.

Yet S. Foster Damon's A BLAKE DICTIONARY offers compelling testament that there was methodology in Blake's madness. In addition to providing a detailed enunciation of virtually every character in Blake's poetry, Damon further offers an exposition of the major themes and symbols which Blake repeatedly returned to in his longer prophetic works. Along with both Northrop Frye's FEARFUL SYMMETRY and David Erdman's PROPHET AGAINST EMPIRE, Damon's meticulously cross-referenced dictionary is an essential reference work for anyone who dares delve into Blake's complex mythology.

Blessed Waiting

Review Date: 2007-11-08
We all wait on God. Like the holding pattern for an aircraft stacked up waiting to land, we pray and then await His timing. It may be waiting for a job, word from a loved one, a baby, or an end to spiritual drought. God uses the time of waiting to protect us, to prepare us for service, to provide clarity and power, and to give us opportunity to pray. Verna Foster Harvey draws on her own experience of waiting and that of Abram and Sarai, Joshua, Saul and King David, Jonah, Jesus, Lazarus, and Lydia. Each chapter starts with a prayer birthed out of the Spirit and finishes with questions inviting application of the chapter in the reader's life.

Even as I write, Verna is caught up in another season of waiting, waiting for the healing of her husband as he recovers from brain surgery.

I needed to see the blessing of God in my own season of waiting for the healing of my marriage. Thank you Verna for sharing from the Lord.
Psalms 27:13-14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. (14) Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

This is a must for anyone wanting to preserve special family memories. This book is almost an autobiography. The idea is to give this book to anyone who you would like to have their memories passed on to others. They fill in the blanks. It is a memoriy jogger. Great to give to Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, Dad, children, or anyone else whose memories will be cherished. Don't delay - get this for the Holiday Season Giving.

A compendium of reflections on the nature of reality
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-07
I found this book truly magnificent in it's depth of understanding and it's ability to convey that to the reader. In my opinion, this is a work of genius not always apparent upon the first casual flick through it's pages.

It's all in the reading really...you don't just read this book as you would a normal book. It's written in the third person, as a series of reflections on God, by God. That may sound strange but that's exactly what it is - God contemplating his own nature and the universe that he has created. And if you read each chapter AS a meditation and take in every word - THINK about every word you read as you read it - it will plant amazing seeds in your mind that will provide food for thought for many years to come.

A masterpiece of metaphysical philosophy.

Poetic Meditations on Tarot and Qabalah

This book is full of gems, like... "Who hath power to limit or defeat the very source of power? Know then, that all thy sense of conflict is but the shadow play of ignorance..." Such beautifully expressed truths make this book very accessible to everyone, but there are also references and footnotes that experts in Qabalah can learn from. In my library I have many thousands of books, and this precious little book I would have put on my top ten list.

Comprehensive compilation with historical info

I recently did research on Ms. Harper, and this book was so good, I actually added it to my collection. This is the only book that has all her work in one place. Ms. Foster also does a nice job of setting up each chapter with information about the history going on at the time of original publication. The only drawback, very slight, is that Harper's best known novel, Iola Leroy, isn't reprinted in full here, there are only excerpts.
Overall a great way to get to know an African American woman author who has unfortunately been forgotten for too long.

deep look at the Depression Era south

Review Date: 2004-05-26
In 1933 Clemson and Melba Dockery accompanied by their nine years old son Tugwell drives from Moultrie, Georgia to Yazoo City, Florida, to visit his father on his birthday. Clemson tries to outrace a speeding train, but fails leaving nine years old Tugwell Dockery as the only survivor. His older sibling, eighteen years old Broda "Bro" Joe is in jail for running alcohol. His paternal grandfather seems indifferent so his Great Aunt Lulu picks up the traumatized child, who no longer can speak.

However, circumstance lead to Tug going to his grandfather's house, which is near the place where his parents died. Bro worries about his younger devastated brother and does not believe his grandfather will care for Tug. Bro escapes from prison with the objective to insure that Tug gets the help he needs to overcome the tragedy.

BRO is a deep look at the Depression Era south that will leave the audience needing a bookcase worth of tissues. The cast tugs at the readers' hearts as each one struggle with what life has dealt them; Tug especially will receive much empathy. Though character driven, historical fiction readers will want to join the pack of new fans that this long time top notch author (see A DAY NO PIGS WOULD DIE) will garner.
