What I loved about this book was that the protagonists were very intelligent and resilient (but of course faced insurmountable odds). There was no cheesy evil god or some such like you'll see in some epic fantasy, and that is but one of many ways in which this world seems so believeable and real. Its detailed tapestry of a world in turmoil yet still beautiful is surpassed only in the emotions and depth of the characters.

Great book!

This series is great, and this book is my favorite of all the others. I love the way the author suddenly switches scenes and we are left wondering what happened to the character, but then we forget about them as we become entrapped in the plot of what's going on with everyone else. Overall, this is my favorite book.

I was impressed that the Witches wasn't a one hit wonder. This second book was well planned if not a little on the slower reading side. The first book truly focuses on the relationship between Meghan and Isabeau, whereas this second book deals with the relationship of Meghan and Iseult, and Iseult and Lachlan. Again praise for the research of pagan traditions.

Now that you're hooked on Eileanan...

In this second book, Isabeau takes a bit of a back seat, recovering from her ordeal in delivering the talisman, and learning humility and obedience as a servant in the Righ's palace. There is a shift of interest to her twin sister, Iseult, whom Meghan discovered when she visited the Dragons. Iseult, raised by her faery kin on the icy Spine of the World, seems as different from Isabeau as night is from day. where Isabeau is laughing, impetuous, and headstrong, Iseult, raised by a tribe of fierce warriors in a dangerous, snowy land, is solemn and disciplined. Meghan convinces Iseult that she must leave her tribe and seek out her destiny among her mother's people. Meghan and Iseult meet up with the lost prionssa who has been hiding for years, since escaping from his brother's treacherous wife. He is a bitter young man, passionate in his desire for revenge against the Banrigh, Maya the Ensorcellor. Guided by Meghan, he and Iseult set off on the dangerous quest to unite the rebels, depose the Banrigh, and restore the Coven. To do this, they must rescue the Lodestar, an ancient magical scepter which has been locked away since the day the witches were betrayed, and which is dying from lack of contact with the royal family. The character of the prionssa is delightfully complex. Just because he's supposed to be some kind of hero to the people and to us doesn't mean they or we always like him, and it doesn't mean he always does everything right. Some people prefer cardboard cutout characters that are some kind of archetypal representation of an idea of a hero or a villan or a leader or an ingenue. And some people like characters who are made from their experiences, with a dash of nobility of character which makes them strive to overcome their experiences to be and do more. The latter should be pleased. When you finish The Pool of Two Moons, I know you won't be able to wait for The Cursed Towers (so maybe order them both together).

Wondering how real-life experiences relate to business? Want to learn savvy business strategies that produce a win-win for you and your customers? And have fun (the book cover says it all)?

That's what authors, Tina Forsyth and Andrea J. Lee, share in their hot-off-the-press book, Money, Meaning, and Beyond.

These two ladies deliver out-of-the-box thinking with practical applications. It's one of the few books that truly operates like a manual to be referred to often for inspiration and fine-tuning your business.

P.S. If you like Money, Meaning and Beyond, there are promotions at the back of the book for additional products and services that more than pay for the book itself. Now, how's that for a deal!

I just loved this book. I have always been fascinated by tropical forests, and this book did a great job of presenting lots of factual information about them and at the same time giving a really good feeling for the aesthetic pleasure of being in one. Forsyth and Miyata are excellent writers, among the best pop science writers I've come across.

I just wish I had read this book before before or during my recent Costa Rica vacation. it would have made it all that much more enjoyable.

Great way to learn more than you wanted to know about tropical nature!

It's much more readable than a textbook but still provides a lot of detail. It's probably an excellent way to actually gain some understanding of tropical nature, and the many types of inter-relationships. I'm a biologist by training, but knowing nothing about tropical nature I wanted to learn about it before going on a tour in Panama & Costa Rica. It's easy to read a chapter at a time. I recommend it if you're really interested in nature or if you're going there or been there.

I first read this book when I was on a jungle trek in Ecuador - it was available in our lodge. This book perfectly reflected our experience of life and death of the rain forest. It's an essential first read for someone who wants to truly understand the basic concepts of the rain forest. I happily read it over again whenever I return to the rain forest whether it's in Borneo, Peru or Costa Rica.

Still in print and selling well 23 years after its first publication, this is a classic book about the beauty and importance of rain forests and their many inhabitants, both plant and animal. I read this book for an undergraduate class that included a trip to Costa Rica. It's an interesting blend of history, organismal biology, and plea for conservation. It also contains practical information about how to hike around in a rain forest. Overall, a very pleasant read told in a conversational manner. If you are a pilot, or love the flying life, or are a writer who aspires to an altitude well above the mundane, here is a classic.

Forsyth tells a Christmas-time story of a young pilot's solo flight home to England from Germany in a then-current single-engine Vampire jet fighter. The weather is not good at takeoff, gets no better enroute and goes to worse upon arrival. A typical night in European winter flying, but with an unusual climax.

To tell more is to reveal the plot line to any who might not have already read (and re-read)The Shepherd. And it is too good a timeless book to do that. Buy it!

This is a great little story that is combined with vivid illustrations. The illustrations make it seem as though it is a young readers' book, but the context of the book is a mature one. Simply, this is a story of a Cod War era RAF pilot who is flying his Vampire (early British fighter jet) home from Germany to England on Christmas Eve night. The reader is treated to the reflective thoughts of the lonely pilot as he flies through the dark and quiet winter sky, and then we are treated to a Twilight Zone-like account of faulty instruments, bad weather, and a mysterious rescue in the fog . . . .
An adult can read this in about 15 minutes. It's a great tale, and an unusual delivery from a master of espionage fiction. Try it if you can find it.

I cannot say why, but this short novella always mskes me think of Paul Gallico's wonderful story, "The Snow Goose." The biggest difference is that the primary character survives his experience in "Shepherd".

I first read this story about 20 years ago and I have since lost my copy of it and am going to order another. It is a great yarn, scaring you one moment, cheering you the next and with an ending worthy of Alfred Hitchcock at his best. I believe that I'll be ordering more than one so that I may send some as Christmas presents.

The manual is very user-friendly. It takes a while to really sift through all the ideas, but the first two parts are designed so that you don't have to re-read the important ideas several times. The main themes are recapitulated in different wordings and contexts to make you understand. The treatment section is extremely clear, with both step-by-step guidance and explanations for the activities. Though the design is quite explicit, the authors urge you to design the treatment specifically for each patient, and even give suggestions of how to do so.

Having been trained in the 70's as a behavior therapist, I moved away from BT in the 80's as I became disillusioned with the mechanistic quality of the approach. Eifert and Forsyth's book beautifully brings the best of behavior therapy together with a more humanistic and interpersonal focus to provide in ACT a truly new paradigm. The so-called "third wave" of behavior therapy incorporates much of the best of other schools while remaining grounded in solid science.
I have found ACT to be a potent weapon in dealing with the anxiety disorders that our clients bring to us. I highly recommend this book for any practitioner of any orientation to wants to broaden their perspective and become more effective in treating these most debilitating disorders.

Startling new way to treat anxiety disorders from a humanistic view aimed at creating a meaningful life despite high anxiety. The book is written very clearly and contains techniques such as metaphors and stories that are excellent and can be used with more traditional therapy.

To use ACT alone in therapy to treat anxiety disorders by just reading the clear instructions of the book and using the CD that comes with it may be dangerous. It is a counter intuitive approach that must be consistantly maintained; the therapist must be 100% present at all times. It is not just a technique that can be applied; the therapist must model this approach in real life or he/she could cause more harm than good. I would love to attend in person some training in this approach and have some live supervision (as is required for EMDR therapy). Definitly worth reading and staying in touch with any new research in this approach.

There are few books that I think are an absolute MUST READ. This is definitely one. Even those of us who consider ourselves informed health care consumers, will find as I did, that there are things about our health and our medical records that we don't know, didn't think of, or just didn't get around to.

There is no wasted time in this book about blame. We are busy, doctors are busy, etc. and we relocate, change health plans, have no health plan, records get lost or destroyed. When it is important, or lifesaving, to have our medical information, we can't count on "the system" to produce it. Even the most organized of us, in the moment of a medical crisis, can't remember a medication, a date, location, etc.

Dr. Savard also lists symptoms, changes, etc. that may seem insignificant at the time, but ignored long enough, become very significant. For many, many reasons this is a must read book. It is a thoughtful gift also to friends and family you care about.

This book is timely and empowering. It provides guidelines that are detailed and easy to follow so that we can be informed participants in our own healthcare. This is a 'must have' if you: ~believe that you should be a part of the decision-making process regarding your healthcare; ~like being an informed consumer (includes information about diagnostic tests, interpreting results etc.); ~belong to an HMO and have minimal time with your primary care physician or see multiple physicians in large group practices (you can always provide them with up-to-date information); ~want more information about a disease or medical condition (the print and internet resources will direct you to accurate information); ~want to be able to take advantage of the most up-to-date medical and drug interventions (the information YOU can provide for your physician will make that decision easier).

How to Save Your Own Life and the Savard Health Record will make a major impact on the quality of our healthcare. Family and friends on my gift list can expect copies!

This book, along with The Savard Health Record makes what could be a daunting process very simple. Thank you, Dr. Savard, for your thoughtful contribution to my peace of mind.

This series of books is worth the money. They provide a gripping narrative of the history of the fighting units.

In the same series, I bought "war in the east" which I found a bit disappointing in term of original documents. The nature of the conflict in the East may not have helped to gather that many first hand pictures.

This volume on the contrary has a wealth of interesting photographies and the corresponding color profiles. It makes this volume of particular interest to the collector and aircraft hunter.

Without being over enthusiastic about the book (I am more a mid level "enthusiast" looking for plenty of color profile) I find this book a good source to place me in a friendly way at an advanced level in luftwaffe history, and I am grateful for this because it does it totally painlessly.

This is one of the wonderful Jagdwaffe series, published by Classic Publications. In a large thin format, these books have a nice balance of history and high quality color profiles with extensive notes on camouflage schemes. This book is profuse with details of Luftwaffe operations in 1944-45 pertaining to the fighter arm. Details of operations and personnel are handled concisely and well. The reader will find good coverage of the Sturmgruppen, and most of the color profiles are of Focke-Wulf products, including Dora 9s and Ta-152s. The Me-109 fan will find sparse coverage in this volume. This book makes a nice companion to the Osprey aircraft series and such accounts as Willi Heilmann's Alert in the West.

Fitting End to a Great Series!

Review Date: 2005-12-07
Robert Forsyth wraps up the Luftwaffe Colours series with this volume covering the desperate air combats fought in 1944 and '45 over the Reich. As with the other volumes in the series, a comprehensive text is combined with dozens of photos, including rare color shots, and Tom Tullis' marvelous profiles.

Forsyth's book makes for compelling reading as Luftwaffe units are steadily ground down by Allied airpower. Ill-served by their leader Goring, the various Jagdgeschwaders kept flying and dying till the last days of the Reich. Despite improved aircraft like the FW 190D and development of new tactics such as the Sturmgruppen assault units, the steady loss of Experten coupled with shrinking fuel reserves doomed German air defense operations.

All in all, a very readable summary of the dying days of the Luftwaffe and a treasure trove of photos and artwork. Luftwaffe fans will want this book. Highly recommended!

Don't let anger destroy your life and your relationships!

This book will help you release from the anger that's ruining your life.

Many of the patients I've worked with have let their anger destroy their lives. And then the harder they fight to control their anger, THE MORE ANGRY THEY GET! It's easy to see how this can quickly become a self-destructive cycle.

What I love about "Act on Life Not on Anger," and what my patients find so helpful, are the techniques drawn from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). If you're like my patients -- and me -- ACT will help you relax, learn to become an observer of your own mind, and help you develop skills to avoid getting hooked into every anger-provoking situation that comes along in your life. 'Cause lets face it, there's certainly a lot of them, and in the end, the only thing that any of us can really control are our own reactions to those situations.

Yes! I am really glad this book came out. As a clinician, I have been hoping for a good "self-help" book for my clients dealing with dysfunctional aggression and anger problems. The area of anger is so under-represented in applied psychology, and I am glad to see these authors offering a digestible self-help approach using contemporary and effective psychotherapy principles.

It's a good read. I recommend it for people dealing with anger issues in their life, and also for counselors.

Transformational

Review Date: 2006-04-13
This highly readable book is so much more than simply a resource for transforming the reader's relationship with problem anger. It contains a wealth of insight into what life is like for the vast majority of human beings, whose daily struggle with painful thoughts and feelings obscures the truth about their deepest sense of self. The good news is that people's most fundamental sense of self can eventually become successfully untangled from burdensome thoughts and feelings, to make possible a meaningful life enriched by the pursuit of freely-chosen values. With clear, accessible prose, engaging illustrations and carefully explained practical exercises, this work is infused with the dynamism and excitement of specialists who are aware of the potential for their truly original approach to transform the quality of the reader's life, whether in the realm of personal psychological experience, relationships with others, or meaningful actions. Through the experiential development of `willingness', `cognitive defusion', the identification of values, and the development of self- and other-directed forgiveness and compassion, the reader is led to the discovery of a new and invulnerable source of identity that can act with unfettered freedom and restore to the suffering individual a fundamental sense of dignity and power. I am convinced that the development of emotional intelligence should have an equal place in the school curriculum with the development of academic intelligence, and an accessible book on anger of this kind has the potential to really challenge and transform the thinking of the (many) adolescents who (understandably) spend a lot of time struggling with angry feelings and ceding to the impulse to act on them, sometimes with devastating consequences. There is a wealth of wisdom and potential to improve human experience in this book.

Destructive anger destroys lives. Here's what to do about it.

Review Date: 2007-01-23
With so many people acting destructively under the influence of anger these days the need for the methods and concepts outlined in this book is urgent. Of course anger is a normal human emotion that serves a real purpose. The problem is not anger itself but the dysfunctional expression of this common emotion. With the huge costs associated with the destructive expression of anger -- for the individuals involved and society as a whole -- it's hard to believe there's no mention of pathological anger in the DSM-IV, the medical establishment's bible of psychiatric diagnoses. This glaring error of omission means anger research doesn't get funded and therapists are ill-equipped to effectively treat clients presenting destructive anger. Eifert and co-authors present a wonderfully simple and effective approach based on the principles of ACT. This book should be required reading for all mental health professionals (and especially the individuals on the advisory committee for the DSM-V).

This book could be a great addition to anyone's therapy or meditation practice. For some, it can be therapy in itself. Anger can be the most troubling and still elusive feeling to understand and deal with. The more you try not to have it the more you will as so many of us have seen and experienced in our lives. The authors of this book guide our minds with simply and effectively while based upon current research. Once the reader can accept anger as a normal and natural but uncomfortable feeling, then the path to living life more fully opens up. The authors teach us that observing without acting out on these feelings helps us to gain control by letting go. The exercises are challenging but essential to the reader's success in using this profound little book. There is a wealth of wisdom and compassion expressed here so gently and deeply about all of life's challenges.

Okay, I've only just received this book and have not had time to test it "in the field". However, I know people who have, and they say it's a great book, and that is my impression from just looking it over, as well.

It has tons of color photos and the pages aren't super thin, either. It looks like it will hold up well over time, and it is exactly what I was looking for!

I'm sure as I use it I will probably find things that could be better (maybe not?), but all I can say is it's a really big book with tons of info and lots of photos and it looks like it is just what I was looking for.

A very handy plant guide for visitors to Costa Rica

I picked up a copy of this guide (published in San Jose by Zona Tropical) at La Selva last year and consider it a worthy addition to the small library I carry in Costa Rica. I would recommend it as the most useful single volume work on Costa Rican plants.

The guide is aimed at the amateur rather than the professional botanist: photographs are the prime means of identification, plants are presented out of family order (more below) and there are no keys. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to identify a good many of the country's commoner plants using this guide.

The order of the plants is:-

1. colourful-flowering trees
2. non-colourful-flowering trees
3. roadside and garden exotics
4. crop plants
5. living fences (so characteristic of Costa Rica)
6. special habitats, e.g. dry forests, cloud forests, beaches & mangroves
7. quintessentially tropical groups, e.g. bromeliads, palms & orchids
8. grasses

There is emphasis on those plants that are likely to be most conspicuous to the visitor. This often means a bias towards exotic species rather than natives. However, this does mean that the book is useful outside Costa Rica and I will be referring to it throughout the American tropics.

Once a plant is identified a comments section provides a host of useful information.

Well worth the price! I will definitely be taking it back with me on my next trip.

Wonderful, but too large general field use

This is an outstanding publication. I was able to identify virtually everything I saw on our course to Costa Rica. I also appreciated the natural history under comments.

My only complaint is the weight of the book. If you are anything like me you will likely have other field guides, birds, herpes, etc. This book is pretty hefty and when added up makes travel cumbersome.

very useful book

As the author of a travel guide to Costa Rica (Explore Costa Rica, Fifth Edition), which covers flora and fauna (in detai)l, I can attest that this is a great book to take with you and makes a superb companion to Explore Costa Rica (which will be a great help with the rest of your trip). Tropical Plants of Costa Rica

Willow Zuchowski and Turid Forsyth have created a beautiful overview of Costa Rican vegetation. The photography is wonderful, giving enough detail of individual plants that readers get an accurate sense of what they are looking at. The text has an interesting diversity of information, ranging from plant taxonomy to medicinal uses to pollination strategies. I used the book with a Tropical Botany class, and the students not only loved the book, but found it to be an excellent size which is easy to carry in the field or store in a backpack. The habitat descriptions are well-written and provide the reader with a good idea of what to expect in different parts of Costa Rica.

After reading, the stories in this book, I find myself identifying in so many ways. Often times, we read about famous people i.e. Janet Jackson, who struggled with low self-esteem; Opray Winfrey, who was abused as a child etc. But we must remember there are challenges in most person's lives and the struggle to overcome can be quite a large undertaking. And to read how the person's mentioned in this book rose up and turned negative situations into positive is quite inspiring to me.

It is often said, mind over matter. Think positive! Do the right thing! Those are only words, however, let us remember, it is the actions that heed our progress, the inner motivation that gets caught up in negative behavior.

I am inspired after reading this book and have recommended it to my friends.
