A very telling and honest account of the deep south.

The photographer does an excellent job of using his subject to tell his thoughts. By keeping some photographs on a long exposure, he also shows the fleeting nature of these somewhat depressed settings. Also a strong use of color to illustrate the cultural setting and importance despite the deprived economic environment. Of high importance for anyone interested in the deep south and the heritage of the mississippi delta.

Birney Imes has done us all a favor by revealing, with stunning photos, a slice of Southern life not normally exposed. The fifty-eight images show the interiors of several colored drinking establishments and what amazed me was the incredible ramshackle nature of these rooms. Everything looks so temporary, walls with exposed brickwork, ceilings that obviously wouldn't support a second floor, doors, tables, seats and bars made from whatever wood was available. The decor and many of the signs seem mostly to be home produced which contrast with the slickly produced commercial work for beer and cigarettes.

Despite the very temporary nature of these joints that the photos reveal I felt they showed something else though, an earthiness and honesty for the customers that is perhaps missing from the typical white bar with its respectable decor and artificial facade. I can just imagine the various bars in Juke Joint coming alive with the sound of raucous blues and relaxing good times, plate thirty-eight shows a hand-made sign in Juicy's Place, Marcella, saying 'BE NICE OR LEAVE'.

Juke Joint is well produced with a large photo per page and generous margins and my only criticism would be that there are not enough exterior photos of these amazing joints. Apart from that I thought this was a fascinating book.

Kindred souls is an excellent resource for women who are looking to deepen relationships on a spiritual level. Stephanie Ford challenges her readers to realize the responsibility and priviledge of spiritual friendship. It is not for the faint hearted, but for those desiring to be sharpened and molded by others on the same spiritual plane. I recommend it to women who are in accountability groups as a way to deepen the use of your time and relationships.

Enlightening and insightful

Dr. Ford's book Kindred Souls is an insightful piece of work that interweaves church history, theology, spiritual direction, and personal antedotes to engage the reader in deep consideration of the friendships that mean the most to us.

Each chapter builds on the next from a brief introduction to spiritual friends and concluding with guidance on issues that should be considered before and while engaging in spiritual friendships. It offers a brief, and helpful, history of friendship within the Christian tradition and invites the reader to consider how God is central in all spiritual friendships.

Those less familiar with church history, spiritual direction, and theology will find Dr. Ford's work a pleasant and inviting work that is accessible and applicable. Those familiar with and/or educated in religious studies will find new resources to consider in their use of this book and its implications for congregational and seminary life.

All readers will find in Dr. Ford's work a spirit of playful engagement that is an inviting as a warm fire on a cold winter day. There is an air of familarity and openness that is refreshing and invites the reader to explore honestly their own experiences with spiritual friendships.

My son really enjoys this book. He's at the age, 5 months, where the images are compelling and the language is not too heavy. And, of course, it is always an added plus that the main character looks like him!!!

I have enjoyed reading this book to my two girls, age 5 & 1. A book of few words helps with repetition and learning. My youngest says the objects and points to them as I read. The pictures are very nice and bright. I even brought "Good Night, Baby" for my nephew.

I enjoyed how varied the selections are on a whole range of topics that appealed to my heart, mind and soul. There were some new concepts, new ideas, as well as the tried-and-true soothing stories for when I just wanted my troubled waters calmed. The short chapters meant I could read two or three a night. My favorite ones are The Caregiver by N. Davison, and Little Vigilance and The Teacher by Ford Boyer. Lisa Payne's Millenial Dance of Death is a beautiful kind of prose poem--very inspiring stuff.

This is a book to peruse in the wee hours, a page or two at a time. The writers use both poetry and prose very well to look at the questions of life we humans dwell on in our innermost souls. The more one reads these essays and poems the nearer the answers float upward. Sometimes even reaching the surface. Listening to the Soul is a book I will turn to often. A Great Read

Clyde W. Ford has written a fast paced, heartfelt, mystery driven by a father's determination to find his teenage son that may be lost in the underground world of crime. The main character, John Shannon, is a husband, father, policeman, and now ex-con, who is trying to put his life and family back together. What makes this story unique is the guidance Shannon receives from an unlikely source-a fellow inmate in prison for life. Charles Promise has discovered the secret to understanding one's own destiny. As Shannon goes from one crisis to another, Promise's words help him accept his destiny. Ford uses his psychology background in an unobtrusive but effective way. I found the Long Mile not only a good read, but food for thought about my own destiny.

The Long Mile
The Shango Mysteries

Life takes a wrong turn for NYPD Officer John Shannon. Accused of killing a fellow officer John is sent to prison for two years. While locked down John meets Promise, a man full of wisdom that changes the way he thinks about like and certain situations. When his conviction is over turned John is released from prison but he isn't free at last. John returns home to find his thirteen-year-old son is in a gang and now he is missing. Homeland Security wants a piece of him and so does the FBI. And to make matters worse his wife needs time to find herself. John races against the clock to find his son, to find out who framed him and to prove his innocence. For John the streets are full of drug lords, the Mob and crooked cops that need him out of the way.
The Long Mile is the first of the Shango Mysteries. An excellent mystery full of suspense and a character you root for. You will anxiously await the next mystery.

Great Music At Great Value

This edition of Chopin's Mazurkas is far from definitive, but for the piano student and music lover, it is a great value. To get the composer's entire output of Mazurkas at this price is remarkable. Recommended!

Complete Mazurka -music of his homeland

Review Date: 2003-05-08
This book is based on FR. Kistner Leipzig edition. Editor is Chopin's pupil Carl Mikuli foreword dated 1879, 30 years after chopin's death.

There are many other editions of Mazurkas which I personally prefer to this available but I rate this book as a important reference to learn what the composer was intended. The editor Carl Mikuli was Chopin's piano pupil and many times he witnessed the performance of composer himself which were only to those of close to him. (Chopin did only a handful of public concerts and recitals in his life) However, intimate accounts of how his (Chopin)fingers were shaped during the passages could only be used as a sentimental knowledges which has little use for today's performance standard.

Nonetheless, we could keep in mind that what composer himself tried to express and teach his students his music as a great way to express our feeling through these beautiful works. Many Mazurkas have only a few pages and many could be played by begining students.

There are discussions of how the Mazurkas should be played, outside this book but Mikuli himself did not address this matter. (Where should the Mazurka's accents have to be placed--and there is a accounts of Chopin and Meyerbeer arguing reported by other pupil von Lenz who was taking lessons of Mazurka.)

Convenient package of 1 book with this inexpensive price, with the cover portlait by Eugene Delacroix, also Chopin's close friend is a great buy for the piano students of all levels.

This may be the "More Than Complete" Guide, but it does not contain the fifth book (The Salmon Of Doubt). However, this book was my introduction to Douglas Adams and I have read it at least a dozen times since it was given to me six years ago.

If you think you'd like British science fiction comedy, you'll like this book. If you saw the movie, don't try to compare it to the book - movies are one form of media, and books are another. It's impossible to transfer this type of written humor into a movie.

Give Douglas Adams a try, and you too can be one of the few people who burst out laughing whenever somebody says "42".

Very good edition. Great for a Douglas Adams Fan.

Regardless of your expertise in this subject matter, you should read this book (if you have not already). It is an outstanding work, using a systems-theoretical approach to integrate the many theories related to personality and motivation. Like S. Ceci's work in the cognitive domain, "On Intelligence More or Less...," Ford is absolutely the best single source for anyone interested in understanding the domain of personality and motivation, for fun or profit!

Autobiographcial Account of His Experiences

Review Date: 2005-05-13
Sorensen tells his story in a straight-forward manner. There are positive and negative aspects of this era in American history which saw the nation moving toward a better standard of living for the masses. Henry Ford comes out appearing very human. By that I mean he had some extremely admirable qualities, but at the same time he made some major mistakes that had lifelong negative consequences for his family.

Thankfully Sorensen kept a diary so the material he draws upon in this book was not skewed by trying to recall events after they had long passed. He saw Henry Ford as a man for whom a sense of responsibility was one of his strongest traits. He also said Ford never appeared to be afraid of anything. Sorensen said Ford's philosophy was, "We must go ahead without the facts; we will learn them as we go along."

Ford is described as a man who sought action, not theory. He wanted results and kept his executives free from unneccesary paperwork. Sorensen and Ford were so absorbed in their work that they worked in their "free time" to accomplish their goals. Work was play for them and the passion for the task showed.

The war years presented new challenges for Sorensen. He provides details of how he and others did the impossible in producing air craft for the nation. He and others of his ilk seemed to thrive on challenge. They were doers throughout their whole lives.

Henry Ford's biggest failure seemed to be his relationship to his son Edsel. Henry couldn't accept that fact that his son was not a duplication of himself. He never showed his son respect. Edsel appeared to be trapped in the shadow of his internationally famous dad. Ford company executives resented Edsel. He experienced physical sickness related to stress. But Sorensen says of Edsel Ford, that he "was a gentleman in the finest, fullest meaning of the word." He describe how he always presented himself in a kind and professional manner.

This book gives you a first hand account of an insider's view of an achiever. He tells it the way he saw it. Nonfiction truly is filled with suspence and odds twists. Life is mysterious.
