Bookstall 99 is proud to add "The Accelerated Job Search" to our list of recommended business and professional books. We look at many books, recommend very few, and our reviewers must be in total agreement before we issue our approvals. This book we felt was exceptional in it's use of resources, in-depth research, timliness, and ease of reading. It is the only book on job search we are recommending. Dr. Wayne Ford has done an excellent job in producing a complete text for the job hunter, regardless of the level of experience. He logically lays out a sequential approach to getting organized, setting up an effective strategy, and following proven methods in achieving success. A particularly well thought out book with the reader in mind.

I am enthusiastically recommending this book to any and all job hunters.

All Moms....if you're even remotely interested in this book, I would recommend it very highly. My daughter & I began to have many conflicts before she became a teenager. I kept hoping things would get better eventually, but they weren't. I really felt like I was at my wit's-end. In my online searching, I purchased this & read it as soon as I got it. I am not saying it has solved all problems between my daughter & me, but it has really helped me to understand things from her point of view. It is so well-written & so insightful! I am definitely going to order some as gifts for my friends who have daughters. I could go on & on but I'd rather just encourage you to get on with ordering it.

What an outstanding depiction of a mother and daughter.

I've bought many books trying to understand this passage in my and my daughter's life, and I needed to buy only this book. It confirmed with text what I was feeling and thinking and gave me a better perspective of her teenage life, which I had either forgotten or not come to grips with in these millennium years. I say the same about Wonderful Ways to Love a Teen, a companion book.

A refreshing book that both mothers and daughters will love!

This book is a true one-of-a-kind. Open, honest, and real, this book is full of practical ways that mothers and daughters can learn from each other to create a strong and loving relationship during the teen years. Each chapter begins with a true senerio that all mothers and daughters can relate to, (like the desire for body-piercings, learning/teaching to drive, dating/boys, etc.) then Judy and Amanda take time sharing each of their perspectives on the situation. The wonderful thing about this book is that it has both the mother's and the daughter's voice. The book is also beautifully designed on the inside with quotes, interesting facts, quizes and activites for mothers and daughters to enjoy together. I gaurentee that all teenage girls and their mothers will love this book!

A Primer for the Mid Century Enthusiast

In 1932, Philip Johnson and Henry Russel Hitchcock held a retrospective of European modern architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. They coined the term "International Style" to describe this newly emerging style. This show captured the imagination of many of the United States' best young architects and designers. They soon began to put an American spin on the new "International Style" of architecture.

Eight years after the MOMA show, James and Katherine Ford published, "The Modern House in America". The purpose of the book was to draw attention to this new style of architecture as it was being developed in the United States. This volume was in turn republished by Dover Press in 1989 and retitled, "Classic Modern Homes of the Thirties".

This volume showcases sixty four designs by such noted architects as Neutra, Gropius, Breuer, Shindler and Soriano. These works are shown with 194 photographs and 128 plans and drawings. It is important to note, these images come from a book published in 1940 and therefore lack the precision and design values that you would find in a book published today. This reprint is not a coffee table style of book. Its value is more historical in nature.

What I found most interesting in this book, is to see how some of the best homes of this period start taking on an iconic stature within a few years of being constructed. Homes that are the subject of recently written monographs are shown as newly built homes.

Mid-Century Modern is all the rage at the current time. There is no better volume to give an enthusiast an understanding of what forces came together to form this look. To really know Neutra, Schindler and Soriano, you have to know what they were building in the late 1930's.

For history lovers and architects alike.

I am so glad to find a reprint of this book! It has been impossible to return the one I have on loan. Some less known but notable architects like Pietro Belluschi are included along with the big names. Details such as floor plans and original cost per square foot are a bonus.

This is a wonderful book combining insight into "modern" residential home architecture of the 30's with a view into the lives of those who designed and lived in them. Like all Dover books, this title is remarkable well printed which allows the reader to easily see all the floorplans, pictures and other images of these homes. The text tells the reader about the family the house was built for, their lifestyle and needs, the layout and construcion details and decorating details of their home. What is remarkable is how fresh many of these homes look today and how much recent modern architecture owes the pioneers who designed these homes. Very enjoyable... anyone who appreciates architecture and history will love this book.

"Classic Modern Homes of the Thirties" is an unabridged reprint of a book first published in 1940, and thus serves as a valuable historic document. But this introduction to the "modern" style of architecture is not just a book for historians: it is visually stunning achievement that will be appreciated by all who have a passion for the art and science of home architecture.

The book introduces the reader to 62 marvelous houses which exemplify the modern style. Architects represented include Gregory Ain, George Howe, Richard J. Neustra, Raphael S. Soriano, and many more. Detailed floor plans, exterior and interior photographs, and details of construction are included. The houses range in size from modest 1- or 2-bedroom homes to expansive, luxurious mansions.

This book is a spectacular introduction to the vocabulary of the modern period in architecture. The photographs and floor plans capture the bold interplay of geometric shapes, the experimentation with glass and other materials, the profusion of balconies and terraces, and above all, the concern with functionality that motivated the masters of the modern.

Co-authors James Ford and Katherine Morrow Ford have included a interesting introduction. Also included is a collection of brief statements by many of the featured architects.

This is a great book for those interested in American cultural history, interior design, home photography, and other subjects. But at its core this book is an excellent record of and tribute to one of the most remarkable movements in the history of home architecture.

A streamline house beautiful.

A really super book for the price. This is a paperback reprint of a book published in America in 1940. Each house has one or more photos, inside and out, plus a plan (some a bit too small) and details about what the owners wanted, site, cost, materials, exterior and interior details etc. The black and white photos are good considering they have been taken from a printed source.

The authors describe the concept of modern architecture in the short introduction and in the back each architect writes about their views on design. I must have looked through this book dozens ot times and I still love these houses. Unfortunately I bet a lot of them are no longer standing, which makes this reprint even more important as a visual record.

If you are interested in this type of streamline building have a look at 'The Modern House Today' by Nick Dawe and Kenneth Powell, this has excellent color photos of sixty-three houses in England that are still standing, unfortunately the book is let down by the minimalist design. Charlotte and Peter Fiell's massive 576 page reference book '30s and 40s Decorative Art' covers Moderne houses (mostly in the US and Europe) with photos of interiors, ceramics, textiles and lighting. All three books are worth owning.

The 1932 Ford Deuce was a landmark achievement for Ford, featuring an eight-cylinder flathead engine over the usual V-8 designs. While many books focus on this groundbreaking model, few take the time to place it in perspective: for that you need Deuce: 75 Years of the '32 Ford. Chapters offer up a complete history of the car's design, changes, influences, and racers. Vintage factory photos and details about each model provide a wide-ranging survey of the changes incorporated into the Deuce over the decades.

I've been fascinated by Edsels since childhood, and while I've never been able to own one, I've collected lots of literature about the most famous flop in automotive history. Although there was familiar material in Mr. Bonsall's work, (the arrival of a new full-sized car just as the first import craze was beginning was the product of a decade-long lead time to launch the new make), there was also much I've never seen in print anywhere before--such as Robert McNamara's statement that the decision to discontinue the Edsel had been made even before its formal introduction! From the company's internal politics, to the design process, to the challenges of setting up the dealer network, no aspect of the Edsel's history is omitted. This profousely illustrated work is an absolute must for Edsel lovers, and should be worthwhile to anyone interested in the Ford Motor Company or automotive history in general.--William C. Hall

Unlike many current automotive books with some nice photos and tired, re-released copy, this one is fresh and fascinating. The photos are good but few, the story is the key and it is a great work. If you are like me and are interested in fresh, serious coverage by experienced automotive authors then this will not disappoint. Five stars from a tough critic.

Interesting history of a controversial car

Review Date: 2004-05-05
The 1958 Edsel has received a lot of lampooning from the time it was introduced because of its front design ("a fish sucking a lemon") and this has generally been attributed as the reason it was regarded as a flop. Certainly Ford lost $100 million on it at the time (and its advertising agency and most of the dealers also took baths) but here it is revealed that in reality the car achieved the market penetration in relative terms that was expected of it. The reason for the losses were due to organisational mistakes and the fact that people like Robert McNamara (the archetypal bean counter) pulled the plug on it prematurely. The author also demonstrates that the production capacity created for the Edsel was actually utilised to the full in the 1960s with the Falcon and the Mustang.
This book is a great read, and the illustrations include many interesting design proposals. I would have given the book 5 stars if the illustrations had been printed on coated paper and included at least a few in color.

Disaster in Dearborn: The Story of the Edsel by Thomas Bonsall is easily the best piece of automobile journalism I have ever read. If you are interested in the Edsel, or just cars of this era in general, Bonsall will simply have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Not only will you come away with a thorough understanding of the Edsel itself, the author artfully puts the whole Edsel saga into context with what was happening with the rest of the American auto industry during time before, during, and after the Edsel's brief lifespan. I honestly could not put this book down once I started it as Bonsall truly lets you feel the anticipation and excitement surrounding Edsel's conception, design, and launch. Quite simply everything about the Edsel and the people who created it is covered in this book. In closing Bonsall impartially takes you through all the theories on why the Edsel failed and brings the book to a very satisfying and thoughtful conclusion. And although primarily not a picture book, you'll find gathered here a small but exciting group of Edsel prototype photos and sketches I have never seen in print anywhere else before. A terrific book for anyone interested in auto history in general and an absolute must for anyone fascinated with the Edsel.

A comprehensive yet concise history of the Edsel

Bonsall's treatment of the Edsel story is unique in that he first sets the historical stage and market conditions under which the Edsel program was conceived and executed. He does an excellent job of describing the reasons Ford needed the Edsel program, and why the program missed its mark. As Bonsall methodically moves the Edsel story forward, the reader is filled with a sense of impending doom, much like reading about the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Bonsall does an excellent job of drawing together the many disparate influences and elements that together charted the fateful course of the Edsel.

Ford and the American Dream: Founded On Right Decisions

This fictionalized account of what went wrong at Ford Motor company provides not only what went wrong, but more importantly lists the steps needed to get Ford back on track.

The fact that many of Clifton's suggestions have been implemented at Ford, and Ford has gone from losing $12 billion in several years to generating $100 million in profit is testimony to the books wisdom and insight.

This book is the real stuff for anyone looking for business guidance and ideas.

I love this book! I wish every executive and every manager would read it and take it to heart. It's a fast read and I guarantee you'll recognize yourself and your organization in its pages. Even better, you'll come away with dozens of ideas on how to make your company more successful and a better place to work.

During a 25 year career as a senior manager in Silicon Valley, I worked for companies with very different cultures, e.g., IBM and Apple. I've seen the frustration caused when "the way we do things around here" gets in the way of getting things done.

Corporate culture impacts everyone and every action in an organization, for better or for worse. Since it's amorphous and can't be quantified, it's often ignored. Instead, most executives focus on the obvious: product development, customer satisfaction, strategic planning, finances. All critical! But few understand that corporate culture impacts all of the above.

Ford defines that connection and provides real-world examples. She spotlights cultural disasters (think Carly Fiorina at HP) as well as positive examples of how the right corporate culture leads to success.

We've all read books full of high-flown philosophy and business theory and wonder how we'd ever apply it to our own situation. But this book tells us precisely how corporate culture works (or doesn't work), presents situations we can all recognize, and tells us clearly how to fix what's broken.

Buy it! Read it! Act on it! You'll make a difference to your organization and to your own success!

Corporate culture made accessible

I have an organizational development background so I've read quite a bit concerning corporate culture. Most of it has been either very academic or authors strongly suggesting that you get the 'right' culture. Easy to suggest, but they don't often tell you how to accomplish that small feat. They are right, however, the 'right' culture can make a significant impact on the bottom line. It is one of the most influential forces at work in an organization, but it's hard to see and even harder to change.

Dr. Ford has made this complicated subject accessible and pragmatic. Given that culture is so hard to see, I really like the way she presents key behaviors. Behaviors are indicators of a culture's unspoken 'rules' so if you're seeing the behaviors she outlines, chances are you have a culture that is working for you rather than against you.

The Fourth Factor explains actions a manager or executive could take with their team or organization and actually expect to make an impact. Not saying it will be easy, but Dr. Ford has provided many useful ways to move the needle.

I will keep one of these close by for my own reference and be recommending it to anyone who wants to get the best out of their company.

At last - practical tips for improving organizational culture!

This is a "must have" book for anyone in HR or for company leaders who want to make sense of "corporate culture".

Just the kind of book I was looking for. Being a huge fan of Harrison Ford films I wanted to read something to the point - the making of his movies. This is precisely what you get from Brad Duke's extremely well researched and complete book. Having this book along with my Netflix subsciption and I was in Harrison Ford film school. A book like this can add so much enjoyment to the movie watching experience. I would love to see more books exactely like this one for other great actors such as Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, or any other you care to name. Duke's style is perfect for film fans who want to aquire a deeper knowledge of the films and actors they admire without the celebrity hoopla and nonsense and on the other hand without the over the top intellectualism of much film criticism that stuffs the shelves of most book stores. In conclusion, an excellent read and a very useful reference for the work of one of the finest actors of the last 40 years. A must for all fans.

This is truly very well documented book about Ford's life and his films. The author goes into great detail about his films (maybe too much detail) and you will learn something new about Ford and his films. That is a promise. I thought I knew almost all there is to know about man - I was mistaken. But I have two complaints. First is the fact that all the photos in the book are in black and white. Not a big issue but I would have liked to see some color photos. And the second and more important is that if you are not a true 100% fan of Harrison Ford, the author's method may get boring. Although an excellent book, the author doesn't use much variety. Each chapter is filled with the same kind of information. Why Ford accepted the role, how the director got involed, how the script got wriiten, some technical element and the location, what Ford thought of the project, how it was received by critics and how much money it made. Finally we have Ford's view on the project. And although great for us Ford fans, it will certainly be a bit boring for the average reader midway through the book. But nevertheless this is a very good book for Ford fans and the best thing about this book is that it tells much more about Ford and his views than the previous books about Ford. There are more Ford quotes than in previous books. Usually it is mainly what Ford's co-worker and old school friend said about him. This is more what Ford has said and those closest to him. Therefore I recommend this book for everybody who are interesting in books about films/actors but warn the average reader that it may get tiresome midway through the book.

Despite it being a tad pricey, this book is incredibly well researched - and if you're a true Ford fan - well worth the price. It truly reads like a textbook in that there's no fluff to get in the way of the facts. Mr. Duke tells the story of Ford's life chronologically and goes into - dare I say, graphic - detail into the making of his films.
Just when you thought you knew everything about the legend, it's time to think again...

'Harrison Ford: The Films' is infinitely detailed and exhaustingly researched in a way that other books simply are not. Fans and film students will find this to be a substantive and well written source for information on both Mr. Ford himself, and the trials and tribulations of film making. Moreover, Mr. Duke's work is absorbing and entertaining - not merely a bland list of the actor's acomplishments, but a witty and reverant discussion of Mr. Ford's career and life. The author graciously omits the cheap "gossip" that so often finds its way into such works, while including a well rounded look at Mr. Ford's origins and personal achievements.

In short, this book is a MUST for any Ford fan or film buff!

Brad Duke's years of research, interviews and extensive travel have paid off in the biggest of ways in the form of 'Harrison Ford: The Films'. Duke's chronological peek at the stellar career of Harrison Ford is unarguably the most thorough, complete and compelling work that has ever come to the literary marketplace.
Commencing with Harrison's working class upbringing and intricately weaving it's way through years of legendary films, directors, actors, friends and business associates, 'Harrison Ford: The Films' could certainly be used as a textbook in a college course about Ford's life and career. This extraordinary book gives the reader a fly-on-the-wall look at the reclusive star's life, loves, personal passions, films and little-known philanthropic efforts. It is a rare feat when a Hollywood-themed book can manage to side-step gossip and innuendo and wind up with a true and accurate depiction of a man, an actor, a crazy business and the passion that fuels all three.
Utilizing little-known stories and interviews with industry big-wigs and insiders, the reader is "a-FORD-ED" with a rare glimpse of the movie industry and all it's workings and complications. Duke further encourages the reader with the use of easy-to-understand terminology and funny stories that, some of which, until now, have not been committed to print. You will certainly find this an easy read and an extremely insightful and funny look at the world's most popular movie star. Starting with Harrison's earliest work in television, the book faithfully chronicals the trials, tribulations and triumphs in such areas as co-stars, film budgets, script problems, studio clashes, risky stunt work and the toll that his work has taken on Mr. Ford himself.
I bought the book when it first came out and did not put it down until I was finished reading it. I found it poignant, interesting, insightful and absolutely charming. I'm sure you will too.

The Iliad*****

The Iliad is a story of martial heroism and a fascinating historical document. Although the Iliad is a fictional account, it provides considerable insight into ancient Greek warfare, technology, society, and metaphysics. To someone who's not being forced to read it in high school, the Iliad offers considerable attractions.

As the story opens, the Greeks and their allies are camped near the walls of Troy, many years into the Trojan War. Achilles, a demigod and the fiercest warrior among the Greeks, is angered by the commander of the Greek forces and withdraws from the fighting. Despite the loss of their best warrior, Ulysses and Nestor persuade the Greeks to continue their war against the Trojans. Throughout the rest of the book, over a period of several days, the two forces slaughter one another with arrow, sword, and spear, greatly preferring the latter weapon. The reader learns about the armor and shields that the fighters used, and every possible way they can fail their owners. The narrative focuses on the most prominent men on each side, but the opposing armies numbered in the thousands. Homer relates the action in terms that his listeners would understand, either realistically ("Diomed struck him in the middle of his neck with his sword and cut both sinews ...") or through simile ("... as a couple of well-trained hounds press forward after a doe or hare that runs screaming in front of them, even so did the son of Tydeus and Ulysses pursue Dolon ...")

There is a great deal of appreciation of martial spirit and character in the text. At one point, Sarpedon turns to Glaucus and says:

"Glaucus, why in Lycia do we receive especial honour as regards our place at the table? Why are the choicest portions served us and our cups kept brimming, and why do men look up to us as though we were gods? Moreover we hold a large estate by the banks of the river Xanthus, fair with orchards, lawns, and wheat-growing lands; it becomes us to, therefore, to take our stand at the head of all the Lycians and bear the brunt of the fight, that one may say to another, `Our princes in Lycia eat the fat of the land and drink the best of wine, but they are fine fellows: they fight well and are ever at the front in battle.' My good friend, if, when we were once out of this fight, we could escape old age and death thenceforth and for ever, I should neither press forward myself nor bid you to do so, but death in ten thousand shapes hangs ever over our heads, and no man can elude him; therefore let us go forward and either win glory for ourselves, or yield it to another."

The men encourage one another during the fighting, and share their strength. Diomed "of the loud war-cry" agrees to spy among the Trojans at night but asks for a companion: "When two men are together, one of them may see some opportunity which the other has not caught sight of; if a man is alone he is less full of resource, and his wit is weaker."

Interludes between the fighting offer scenes of a kind of domesticity and a glimpse at societal structure. The Greek leaders eat, drink, and rest in their tents, attended by large retinues, and the common fighting men sleep on the ground, using their shields as pillows. Decisions are made in assemblies that include all.

The fortunes of the two opposing armies wax and wane, and their fortunes are attributed to the gods, who intervene to help their favorites and even fight among themselves.

I read the Iliad rather slowly, over a period of three weeks or so, mostly before going to sleep at night, and drew a considerable amount of pleasure from it. The Samuel Butler translation is superb.

The Odyssey***

This Homeric poem focuses on Ulysses, one of the Greek heroes portrayed in the Iliad. When the story opens, Ulysses has been away from home for ten years, and a great deal of the book recounts his fantastic adventures as he tries to return to Ithaca. Meanwhile, at home, a group of suitors courts his wife, Penelope, while they eat his livestock and drink his wine. When he arrives home, Ulysses prowls about in disguise to establish who has been loyal and who disloyal in his absence. This done, he unleashes an unbelievably violent revenge on the suitors and their allies among his household staff.

Ulysses' adventures are highly imaginative, and, as in the Iliad, it is interesting to see how the ancient Greeks supposed that the gods intervene in our affairs. It is interesting, too, to see how they tried to read the gods' intentions through portents and omens. The extreme violence is rather surprising to a modern reader, and the poem could possibly be criticized for its rather abrupt resolution of the conflict between Ulysses and the other townspeople.

It has been years since I had a chance to get reacquainted with one of the classic writers, Homer. I've been able to do just that with this book. Mr. Ford has provided me a copy of both the Illiad and Odyssey, in one paperback. I consider this larger paperback an easier format that allows me to concentrate on the story at hand.

I don't often recommend books to my wife (an assistant librarian at our high school)but I believe she should order several for our students. Job well done!

Homer - The Iliad and The Odyssey is a great book. It is considered to be a classic for good reasons: it is a good read, it deals with really important matters, it is superb literature and it is a landmark in the history of civilization.

For about two thousand years, it has been on the reading list of most educated people in the Western Hemisphere. Undoubtedly, it will still be part of the curriculum at most of the world's colleges and universities two thousand years from now. You just can't consider yourself to have received a proper education without having read this great Greek classic.

While you are at it, you should also read:
Aristotle - Ethics and Politics
History of the Peloponnesian War
and
Anabasis: The March Up Country

Classics like these are not stuffy, pompous, overblown literature as some ignorant anti-intellectuals might think. They are genuine looks at life by excellent writers who had something important to say - and said it well.

It is hardly an exaggeration to say that Homer is to World Literature what Shakespeare is to English Literature. With the two books combined into this one volume - the scribe, scholar, genius or whatever Homer really was - made a mark on literature that stands alone. The epic siege of Troy and the adventures of Ulysses are so deeply ingrained into the consciousness of Western culture that these works are a part of us even today.

The world of literature, and culture itself, owes a debt to Homer that cannot even be estimated. To not have read (the movies are but pale imitations) the Iliad and The Odyssey is a loss beyond description.

This book, the second edition for Ellis, Balcomb and Ford, is a beautiful book for anyone interested in whales, their habitat and their behaviour. Focusing on the Orcas of the Pacific Northwest, this book details their lives from what they eat, to their social habits. It includes a wonderful photo chart of all the Northwest Orcas still alive when this book was published. It is a bit heavy reading, with many complex scientific terms. I would not reccommend for children, but if you know anyone with a facination with whales, this book will it into an obsession.

May I first say I have never encountered a better identification book then Killer Whales and Transients. Both books are written by THE wild orca authority in the Pacific Northwest. Catalouged pictures and organized information of each individual in every pod along the coast from WA to northern BC along with accurate info on feeding, behavioral and other habits of the pods in Puget Sound and British Columbia. Truly a great book, and as I plan on researching these animals in my adulthood, it has been a great boost to my knowledge on them.

I just returned from a kayaking trip in the Johnston Straight just East of North Vancouver Island known as the inside passage. We had first hand views of the Orcas. This book was used as a reference manual to identify some of the whales. It has wonderful reference pictures of the known pods (families) in the area. It goes into great detail on their eating habits, language, and family history. It also explains their social behavior, and the differences between the pods. It is a wonderful book full of pictures, and details.

This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in orca whales. It has mass amounts of great information, it's easy to read, there are great photographs, and the ID catalogue of orcas is nothing but the best. This book is a must have for any whale-lover, researcher, or someone with just a general interest.
