AN OUTRAGEOUS LITTLE MASTERPIECE FROM HYATT & DUQUETTE
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1997-02-09
Robert Anton Wilson says of "Taboo"..."I assure you that what you are about to read is obscene, lewd, blasphemous, subversive, and very interesting, and that all right-thinking people will agree that it should be banned, bowdlerized, censored, suppressed, and burned by the public hangman...l think it is safe to predict that almost every organized group of idiots in this country will regard this book as extremely dangerous." Wilson is probably right, Taboo's challenge to unite sexual and religious practices probably won't go over well with the New Right. But for the rest of us, the authors present a roller-coaster of a read complete with case histories, theories, and secret sex rituals of interest to both "adepts' of esoteric sex cult societies as well as "ordinary" people. Full of interesting quotations and anecdotes from alchemists, sex magicians, and vampires--not to mention old Yawey himself--this is a fascinating a colorful work that seems predestined to upset many people in our sex-negative society. Those who believe that taboos are made to be broken, however, should find Taboo and enjoyable and entertaining read....Leticia Marquez, Magical Blend Magazin

Well, it's always difficult to say if I really like a novel or not when it's less than 60 pages and a lot of the things I don't understand could be explained with a longer novel.

Jay Black is an Afro American disk-jockey; he has a night show with his best friend Pandora and one night he says online that he is still grieving from an heartbreak three years old. A caller proposes him a one night stand, only sex, not string attached. But when he meets the man, behind insistence of his friend Pandora, he discovers that the man is his ex lover Darrius (actually I didn't understand if also Darrius is an Afro American man, he is decipted with honey skin... not that matters, but a gay couple plus an interracial relationship I think have more trouble than not). Darrius is ready to admit that he misses Jay and he wants to give another chance to their relationship. But even if Jay has forgiven Darrius, he can't forget: Darrius cheated on him with a woman, and this, according to me, has opened the mythical Pandora's vase... Jay is not more sure that he is the right man for Darrius, cause maybe he thinks that Darrius doesn't want a man at all. Plus is it true that Jay threw Darrius out of their home, but probably he thought that the man was willing to fight for them, and instead Darrius moved on another city, and now, three years later, he wants to mend the things between them? Oh no, dear Darrius, you are a bit late according to Jay

So, in the end, I didn't know on what side I was; it was like a tennis match and I was the ball. Once I was by Jay's side, and I thought, "Oh that Darrius, grrr, what a CHEATING man", and then I was by Darrius' side and thought, "Oh Jay, how can you not be a bit less stubborn, don't you see I love you?".

Unfortunately the book ends quite abruptly and I still haven't decided who had the match point...

My judgement in the rating may be biased, since I've met the guy and found him rather likable. But I also like the stories themselves. They are a very curious and eclectic range, from a 50-word microstory, through sci-fi and modern social commentary to the main story, some humorously autobiographical chapters about the author's experience with his two-wheeled friends.

If, like me, you enjoy brief tales of the unexpected, I think you'll get a kick out of at least some of these.

Amazingly vivid telling of a riveting story

Where history books place dry facts, dates, and seemingly distant, irrelevant stories, this book brings home the first person accounts of the brave and dedicated organizers of the Ford Rogue Plant. Spanning from the 20's to the 70's, these accounts are told in the words of a tapestry of workers, union officials, and politicians. The stories they tell are moving, riveting, and allowed me to actually understand whate really happened in the unionist movement from the people who were there.

The book focuses not only on what happened, but why. It takes a concentrated look at what was going on in America politically and the effect that each thing had on the move to organize. The format is clear and concise, but it is still very intriguing reading.

Everyone in America should read this book, and anyone who has any interest or membership in an American Trade Union of any kind NEEDS to read this book. It's what it is all about: freedom, democracy, power of the people when they stand united.

The purchase of this book is to replace one lost. Of all the Mineralogy books available in 1980, this 1932 book was given to me by a friend, and became the foundation and backbone of a 24 year career that is still ongoing in the minerals field.

This is great. For me he stole the show in the movie Snatch. So when i saw this book I had to buy it.
Its about a day in the life of a struggling actor in London. Day to day knowledge of someone who spent some time in London. He knows his way around. Very real. Couldn't put it down. Great little read.
