All Roads Lead to Rome!Review Date: 2005-12-14
Among the most famous of these antique but extant roads here discussed are the Via Appia, Via Cassia, Via Flamina, and Via Aurelia, each named after an emperor and each leading into Rome through a different atmosphere and out to a different destination. The manner in which these roads connected Rome with the known world is discussed with authority, but the interesting facet is the way Heseltine shows the current environs where these roads exist. This is living history, beautifully captured in Heseltine's photographs and enhanced by Colin Ford's Introductory notes.
Filled with both black and white and toned photographs this book is a journey through history that is fascinating in content and illuminating in style! A definite must for those who love Italy and things Italian. Recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

Sacred Voices: A Banquet of Women's WisdomReview Date: 2002-04-02
The reader meets famous women like Hildegard of Bingen or Georgia O'Keeffe, and obscure or anonymous women: Bibi Hayat of Persia, Sarada Devi of India, and Bedouin, Pygmy and Hopi women. One of my favorite entries is this poem where the erotic meets the mystical, from someone I'd never heard of, Rabia Al-Adawiyya, Persian, 717-801:
STARS ARE SHINING
O my Lord, stars are shining
And the eyes of men are closed.
Kings have shut their doors
And every lover is alone with his beloved.
Here I am alone with you.
Sacred Voices' entries bring us diversity of age, race, sexual orientation, historical period, geography, literary form, and spiritual perspective. It is a collection of the wisdom of old women, girls, mothers, artists, philosophers, mystics. We meet extravagant women, modest women--all passionate in their own ways, all truth-telling, all women of wisdom, all now, thanks to this book, part of our heritage.
The volume is encyclopedic but not intimidating, to be kept near at hand for inspiration, comfort, and challenge. Don't try to gulp it down in one swallow. I've been reading a few entries every day--what a treat!
Mary Ford-Grabowski has dug deep into the immense treasure of women's experiences and reflections. She deserves our thanks for bringing it to us in such a beautiful and useful volume.

A saviour to all those who sellReview Date: 1999-09-19
The only problem with this book is that it was written several years after I could have first used it. It's great, but shame on the author for waiting so long to write it.

The epilogue alone, containing Leighton's meditation of the death of his son, is worth the price of the bookReview Date: 2008-07-05
Sandy, a Heart for God is a quick look into the life, and death, of one young man who wanted to walk with God. It will probably make you cry. But hopefully it will make you consider your own walk with Him. The epilogue alone, containing Leighton's meditation of the death of his son, is worth the price of the book.

Santa Barbara hiking at its bestReview Date: 2004-04-11
This book is one of the best hiking guides I've found for the Santa Barbara area. If you're a beginner, there are plenty of short treks for you, mostly clustered around the beach or city. There are also a dozen moderate hikes and quite a few trail descriptions for streunous jaunts, all of these in the mountain areas. The descriptions of each trail is quite good and the driving desriptions to the trailheads is adequate (I haven't gotten lost yet from following their directions). I recommend this guide for everyone fortunate to hike in this beautiful locale.
