First a word about the "Major Problems" line: it is designed to be a text in college history courses. Each chapter is divided into two parts: 1) Primary sources 2) Two or three scholarly articles (usually written by an expert in the field). Each source or article is designed to act as a springboard for classroom discussion lead by the professor. In all, I like the format of the line of books and enjoyed it when a professor assigned it as a text. I'm so nerdy, in fact, that I've bought a couple books from the "Major Problems" lines to read for pleasure. This particular title in the series was compiled by a former professor of mine, Steven Riess. He succeeds in putting together a series of documents that enlighten, challenge opinions and, in all, provide a wealth of information while leaving no clear cut answers. Favorites include essays on why sports were restricted in colonial New England (because of religions reasons or for practical/safety reasons?), the interview with Muhammad Ali, and Chapter 14: The Business of Sport (highlighting the benefits, drawbacks and inside deals involved in big money major leagues). Riess also succeeds in giving legitimacy to the study of sport--think of all the money spent on tickets, all the air time, advertisements, etc. that are involved in modern sports. Sports IS a major part of American society and Riess helps to present its rich history and evolution. This is a college text book--not something one would take to the park with them on a Sunday afternoon to read under a tree, but this was not Riess' intention. Clearly, he hit the mark he was aiming for.

I purchased the book as text for Mammology class @ BemidjI State University. The Author taught the course and related that he could find no book that gave the imformation as he wanted it presented. So he wrote the book as he saw it should be presented. The diagrams and dentition were fascinatiing. The range maps were entlightening. The book was organized by all the different orders of the mammal family. I am glad to return it to my collection of reference books.

Back cover reads:
Zak Trenchard's return meant trouble
At least as far as Tamsin Westmacott, his neighbor, was concerned, She'd worshipped him once, as had others, and they'd all been left with broken hearts.
Now it seemed that Zak was after her land. Only, this time, Tamsin was determined his mission would fail. She wouldn't let him destroy another of her dreams. She'd show him that the sweet-natured kid he'd once hurt was now as hard as nails.
Why, then, did her thoughts become a muddle of confusion and desire whenever she confronted this man of rock...?

I would have to give this book a 5 star. As you see, Carl W. Breihan is my father and I have a copy with images of all his books he has written about Jesse and Frank James and the old west. I also have pictures of my dad on the back cover of his jackets. I also have a barber chair that Frank James had his hair cut and shave. His signature is on the bottom of the seat. Marriages of Some Virginia Residents is a stupendous reference work and a recognized landmark in Virginia genealogy. Not only does it contain the records of approximately 40,000 marriages with references to about a quarter-million individuals, it also draws information from a body of sources altogether unique in genealogy. Unlike other published lists of marriages, traditionally based on parish registers, ministers' returns, and marriage bonds, this work derives from Bible records and references found in wills, deeds, court suits, and orphans' court records, as well as the traditional sources just named. The result is a collection of marriage records that is both comprehensive and unique.
As a rule the marriage records relate to three classes of people: (1) those who were married before settling in Virginia; (2) those who were married in Virginia; and (3) those who married after moving from Virginia to another colony or state (absolutely essential for determining the colonial origins of ancestors who removed to states like Kentucky, the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, and Indiana).
Most items are a composite of data found in various records. In general, each entry consists of some or all of the following: names of bride and groom, date and place of marriage, names of parents, sureties and bondsmen, place of residence, and a specific source citation. Brides and grooms are listed in a single alphabetical sequence; all other persons mentioned in the records are indexed separately.
