This book was delivered in a US Mail Sack and was just short of causing my Postie to have a hernia. My reason for buying this magnificent Tome was because on my first visit to Turkey I was impressed with the quality of their ceramics and pottery. So I sought a guide. At an arcade in Marmaris I found the shop keeper himself had a copy of this work. So I made a note and purchased it. On reading the introduction etc. I was staggered at how little time it took the author to collate this work.
It covers a massive amount and is well worth acquiring if you are interested in Turkish Culture and Craftmanship.

I wasn't particularly interested in Turkey prior to reading this book. I was, however, interested in the writing of an ethnographic study of the folklife of potters, weavers, and other artisans. By the time that I finished reading Glassie's rich description of the life and work of the people of Turkey, I found out why he was so amazed at the quality of artwork in this exciting land. To begin to understand the work of the potter, the weaver, the calligrapher, and the woodworker in Turkey, Glassie takes the reader on a pilgrimmage into the Islamic nation. The words, narrative, and rich photographs are the physical manifestations that bring the reader into a shared sense of presence with the artists. By the time I finished reading this fine book, I came to feel as if I was actually experiencing the sense of peace and presence that inspires master artists in Turkey. As I closed the book, I found that I not only was more intrigued by Turkey and Islam, I had gained a glimmer of a shared experience of working as an artist in this nation. Glassie inspires the author by showing that printed words and reproduced photographs in a book can provide a sense of the presence that is evoked when one admires woven rugs, woodwork, and ceramic plates. Through ink he provides a glimmer of the light that shines out from the ceramic glaze covering the pot of a master artist -- or usta -- in a Turkish ceramic studio.

I loved this book. It is truly a classic. Keats is long before my time, however his work that he left behind is still here and leaves a big mark on the world of poets. Wanting to be a journalist myself, and having a hunger for literature, Keats' book was quite inspiring. I recommend it for any poet. One of my favorites is, of course, "When I have fears that I may Cease To Be."

There are many good collections of the poetry of John Keats. This selection by John Barnard is quite good and has long served as a text for college classes.

Barnard writes that the poetry of John Keats is uniformly serious and always poetic. Keats' prime concern was art and beauty. The casual reader may not even notice certain passages that resulted in severe political criticism by the Tory press and other supporters of Charles II.

The real popularity of this particular collection is the poetry of Keats himself. Barnard has assembled an excellent collection, one that is fully representative of Keats' remarkable genius. He largely avoided the longer poems of John Keats with the exception of Endymion in which he offers Book 1 in its entirety, but only extracts from Books 2, 3, and 4. Nonetheless, this abridged version of Endymion still exceeds 2000 lines.

Looking for alternative collections? John Barnard has also compiled John Keats, The Complete Poems. It was also published by Penguin Classics. It is about 750 pages, more than three times as long as Selected Poems. For example, the full Endymion is some 50 pages longer than the abridged version in Selected Poems. Barnard's explanatory notes in this collection are quite extensive, totaling nearly 200 pages in reduced print size. There is also a wide ranging appendix exceeding 50 pages, including selected letters of John Keats.

Another good choice is published by Modern Library. Complete Poems and Selected Letters of John Keats is actually a very good choice and is indeed my favorite. The introduction by John Hirsch is more than 25 pages and is quite helpful. I particularly like the explanatory notes by Jim Pollock. They are less extensive than those in Barnard's The Complete Poems, but I found them most useful.

Brings me right back to my snowy days...

And shares them perfectly with my two preschoolers! While the Library Journal called the verse and illustration in this book somewhat flat, I found both to be vibrantly simple and extremely appealing to my little boy and girl since their first winters as very small infants. The simple rhymes enticed my children to have the book read to them over and over again, and then to repeat the verses to me as we played in the snow ourselves. The beautiful collages really capture the fuzziness of a day seen through snowy eyelashes and cold breaths, and emphasize the warmth that I felt as a child radiating from my dad, my scarf, mittens and big jacket, and especially from the cozy house, fire and hot chocolate afterwards. The dad pulling the sled home was absolutely the perfect juxtaposition to the children energetically running ahead at the beginning. We loved this book!

P.S. For the child reaching age 3, check out The Snowy Day. This Caldecott award winner is sort of the big brother to Snow!, with its older boy subject and modernistic abstract collage illustrations.

This book is soft and cozy and full of snowy adventure for the very young child and their parents. The poetry is gentle, the words full of fun sounds. A great book for the holidays, whether you live in Texas where snow is a wonder, or you are surrounded by it and sitting by a warm fire wanting a good book to share.

This book is not only great reading, but it puts a real human face and voice on police officers. It's about time. The total absence of any tired old police cookie cutter images was wonderful to behold. I get the feeling I could sit down with the writer and listen to stories for hours. This is the next best thing.

I have read many police books, but this is by far the most fun to read. I truly could not put it down. The funny stuff was hilarious and the heavy stuff was gripping. As a retired officer, it took me back to my time on the street with absolute accuracy. If you are a cop you will love it, and if not you will still get a bang out of it.

On Earth as it is in Heaven

Review Date: 2006-12-21
A theme in my studying this year has been, "How do we bring the Kingdom of Heaven to Earth?" Speaking of Faith is a testimony to how our lives do make a difference, here, now, expressing all that God has intented. Reading each person's journey motivates and strengthens my conviction to Bee-Courageous, Bee-Hold Your Purpose (from Barbara Dwyer's chapter). Reading Rev. Desiree Carter's story affirmed that Love, Faith, Believing, culminate into a wonderfully purposeful life right here on Earth. The stories continue and you can pick one a day, or sit down and take it in all at once. I'm using it as part of my devotional time and each day is a new insight as to how "on Earth as it is in Heaven" is being accomplished. I'm grateful to all who contributed to this wonderful book. Bless you.

Many people struggle to find a way to integrate their faith in their daily lives. Many of those same people even question if it is possible to live their faith in today's world. They also question the purpose of their life, why they're here and what, if anything, can one person do to affect mankind for the better.

To help people find the answers to these questions, David E. Wright, president of the International Speakers Network, conducted interviews with fourteen outstanding leaders of different faiths. From Jana Alcorn, a humanitarian and founder of Dream Builders Network and Hayley's House, an organization that cares for orphaned and abandoned children in Tanzania to Lonna Vopat, the founder of In His Grace Ministries and host of television talk show, Between Friends, each person answers probing questions about their faith, the trials and triumphs in their lives and how their deeply held faith helped them endure both the failures and the triumphs.

The following are short summaries of some of the interviews.

Nita Scoggan, who held weekly prayer sessions in the White House from 1984 through 1998, relates tales of redemption after cutting up and burning a kitchen witch at a friend's house and exorcising demons from a young woman who was both a witch and a vampire.

Victoria McArthur talks about growing up in a strict Baptist family with a mother who, unknown to anyone, was bipolar and suffered from schizophrenia. Victoria was not allowed to show any emotion in front of her parents, nor did she experience any of the small wonderful everyday things such as being tucked up in bed at night with a kiss. Pushed into a marriage at seventeen, Victoria soon divorced her first husband and continued on with her life.

Dave Dravecky, former major-league pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, talks about the cancer that ended his career when his arm had to be amputated to save his life and how his faith got him through this tough time. His faith was so inspiring to people facing similar and even worse changes in their lives that he founded the organization Outreach of Hope in 1991 that offers faith and encouragement to people battling cancer and other illnesses and even people who just need someone to talk to and, with God's help, give them the strength and courage to continue on their life's path.

"Speaking of Faith" is a wonderful book; you can feel each person's commitment to God on every page.

Blindness came upon me so quickly there wasn't time for gradual adjusment or to come to grip with my feeliings. I felt like I was crippled and helpless. The importance of physical perfection emphasized by the world now made me feel insecure. Blindness was more than a loss of vision, it was an attack upon my self image. Some things were too painful to talk about; the inability to see my child's face, my husband's good looks, my mother's smile, or even myself, made acceptance very difficult. I could no longer watch television, catch the writings on the billboards and signs, or read a book - it was a grievious adjustment. I could no longer stay in touch with the changing times, new hair styles, fachion and make-up trends. Changes in land scaping and building's went unnoticed. I could not see to catch peoples gestures, the nodding of their heads, the shrug of their shoulders, their posture, facial expressions or the look in the eye. Because of not being able to see these things, I felt like I was missing half of every conversation. I was standing still while around me the whole world was moving ahead.Devastated I sat and grieved for three weeks with tear's running down my face. I was no longer the same Marolyn. I thought different, I talked and walked differently. I had become a blinded personality listening to all the sounds around me, noticing smells and other things that gave me dirction. Before me was college, a career and marriage - life had crumbled at my feet. The time of grief and sorrow over the life I had lost was neccessary and healthy because tears cleanse the soul, ones mind and emotion's. As I sat in tears I realized that my life was God's gift to me and what I did with my life would be my gift back to God. At that moment, it wasn't a matter of whether I was blind or sighted. It was my life, and I wanted to be able to lay a life down at the feet of Jesus that would be worthy of his death for me on Calvary's Cross. Sitting in my dad's easy chair for the rest of my life wouldn't accomplish that. It was up to me to pick up the broken pieces. I knew I needed to get along with God so I could take my heavy burden to the Lord and leave it with Him.Soon after that I left for college, married a minister and became actively involved in the church ministries. Not knowing what my husband Acie and daughter Sharon looked like, we continued to ask God for deliverance from my blindnss. After thirteen difficult years, God miraculously gave sight to my blind eyes, Aug. 26th, l972.Dale Evans Rogers wrote: "THESE BLIND EYES IS A MUST... Marolyn Ford is a tremendous inspiration to all she meet, and she is LIVING PROOF of the power of Jesus Christ to restore that which is lost - and use that restoration to His glory".

This is the best book available regarding the little-known and mysterious transient orcas. In addition to having a detail catolgue of each transient whale in B.C waters, the book analysis and discuss the distinct behaviour and hunting styles of the transients, which are completely different from the salmon-eating resident killer whales.

Futhermore, there are numerous rare and spectacualr photos showing transients launching into the air and attacking their preys. This shows why Killer Whales are called "killers". For while these whales do not attack or eat man, they are highly efficient predators, no marine mammal is safe from transient whales. Read this book and you will understand why.

This is the definitive source for information on the transient or mammal hunting race of killer whales of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. If you are serious about learning what there is to know about these fascinating superpredators-this is THE book to buy. I am a naturalist on a whale watch boat in the San Juan Islands and we use this book constantly to inform our guests about the "alter egos" of our salmon eating Resident Orcas. Fabulous pictures and incredible stories.

How would you like your children to have a _memorable_ birthday party, one where giant mechanized rodents weren't screaming at the tops of their lungs? A party where you're not being nickel and dimed to death for more money to play the games? And do I _need_ to mention the food?

Help is here if you live the the Baltimore Maryland area. For instance, there is the Cloisters Children's Museum, a beautiful stone castle in Brooklandville, Maryland. If you have a winter child's birthday party scheduled there, you can even have a roaring fire inthe fireplace. Try _that_at MacDonalds.

Or maybe your child is a baseball fan - you can check out the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Baseball Center. Of course, it has all sorts of info on the Babe as well as other aspects of baseball history. This could be a good place to take your softball team for the end of season party.

Perhaps you are looking for a special place to get married in the Maryland area, You could check out Brice House, in Annapolis Maryland. It's a beautiful mansion for that special day. Or maybe you'd like something that has a view - you could tie the knot at the Glass Pavillion at Johns Hopkins University.

These places and many more are covered in this detailed book that offers addresses and phone numbers as well as prices and photos of the locations. If you want to plan an even in the Baltimore Maryland area or perhaps check out what this wonderful area has to offer, this is the book for you.
