As a new mom, I was overwhelmed by all the "must haves" parents are bombarded with. This book helped me cut through all that and focus on the key elements of designing my hursery. It has great tips about how to avoid chaos (at least in the nursery design!) and streamline, without ever being preachy or intimidating. A Peaceful Nursery is a wonderful guide for anyone getting ready to welcome home a baby and has become one of my favorite shower gifts.

I bought this item for my granddaughter who is expecting her first child in about three months. She is way into Feng Shui. Her entire home follows the foundation of Feng Shui.
While I did not read the book myself, my granddaughter was very excited and pleased about receiving it. She had looked in the city where she lives and was unable to find such a book.
Based on her enthusiasm, I rate this book highly.

I wish I had this book when I set up my childs nursery! It is so easy to read and understand. I have given this book as a gift to many of my pregnant friends and they are really enjoying it. It is a great introduction to Feng Shui as well as a great introduction to parenthood. Getting ready for your baby is often overwhelming and this book is a wonderful resource for how to set up the room, what you will need, and how to keep it clean and healthy. This book is truly a find!

"The nursery is the most important room in any expectant parents' home, and every parent wants to ensure that it will be as warm, inviting and healthy as possible for their new baby. Designing this special space is also an opportunity for expectant parents to prepare mentally and physically, for the changes to come. Through stylish photographs and practical, easy-to-understand design tips, home and lifestyle experts Laura Forbes Carlin and Alison Forbes show expectant parents how - by applying principles gleaned from interior design, Feng Shui, healthy living and their own parenting experience - they can:
*Create a balanced and peaceful nursery
*Make health conscious choices when selecting paint, fabric, toys and furniture
*Enjoy the practical and emotional benefits of a streamlined and clutter-free home
*Set up a nursery that encourages good sleep for their baby
*Prepare and organize nursing, changing, bathing, sleeping and play areas
*And many more helpful step-by-step guidelines for creating a nursery that will nurture their baby's mind, body and spirit - as well as their own - during their transition into parenthood." (from the author's website)
I think some people resist feng shui, thinking it too "new-age" or something. Actually so much of it seems based on common-sense, once you try it. I like that this book addresses clutter problems too, since many American homes have issues with that. V. Allain

My son (5 years old) loves this book. He likes for me to show him where on the maps we are and where we have been. He also likes to know where his extended family is located. (You have to love anything you can "sneak" some education in on.) It has excellent illustrations and interesting facts that will make this an enjoyable book for many years to come as my kids develope and expand their understanding capabilities.

This book is excellent for teaching your children geography and world culture. It is very reader friendly and extremely interesting. It touches on all parts of the world with the most relevant information. We bought it for our 6 year old son for Christmas and now find it to be a fabulous birthday gift for other children. Unlike a toy that gets played with for a month and then thrown into the toy box graveyard, this book will be a favorite for many years both as general interest reading and as a reference for school projects. Don't miss this one...at a great price too!

Don't be fooled by the word "atlas" - this lovely children's book contains much more than just maps! Facts, figures, "fun" information connected to the part of the world you are perusing. Beautifully illustrated, extremely readable. Interesting even for the adults in this family. Its oversized (coffee-table) dimensions make you want to plop down on the floor with the book spread out before you, and just look for an hour or so. Or you can simply turn to the area of the world that you're interested in (or doing a school report on) and get a few quick facts.

My son first saw an older edition of the Atlas at a relative's house....

As soon as we got home, I ordered the newest version for my son. He is 11 and very much into maps and geography. I don't understand the review from the School Journal that called this book "superficial." My son pours over the facts, pictures, and maps. Yes, it is a "pretty" book but it is also filled with much information for children. The Maps and Mapmaking sections were of particular interest to my son. We are planning to try a few of the projects as part of our homeschool this coming school year. All in all, this a good addition to a child's own library!

This is not a "how-to" book, but shows the bead work of many artists. These works were featured at the Beadworks '98 exhibit at the Dairy Barn, the Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center.

Chris Allen-Wickler covers rocks with peyote stitch, leaving holes here and there. Kenneth A Arthur uses brass shells and plumbing parts to make a sculpture he calls "My Dad's Drawer." Joann Baumann found a use for her old Nymo beading thread bobbins, using the bobbins as beads. Several artists give credit to Joyce Scott for encouraging their fearless use of beads.

Our San Antonio Bead and Ornament Society member Alison F Whittemore found a use for all of her extra beads and tiny treasures. She covered a beanpot with them. I hope she buys raffle tickets for our bead jar. She would have a blast coming up with a use for that eclectic mix.

This is a truly spectacular book. The artwork ranges from the elegantly beautiful to the bizarre & quite humorous. All the photographs are in vibrant full-color & are printed on glossy stock. The book starts out with a brief history of beads. Each item is described with details on how it was made. Background information on the artists is also included.

One of my favorite pieces is a sampler of 9 tiny toys made of seed beads. I feel in the love with the many gorgeous decorated dress forms, jewelry & masks. The beaded beads & eggs are adorable.

There is nude woman sitting on a cow & eating a banana. In another a green woman lifts weights. I had to laugh when I saw a doll standing doll on her head and an old lady with a funky perm.

If you want to be wealthy you must think like wealthy people, pay yourself and look continually for ways to let money work for you. I believe it is a book that could help both churched and unchurched people of all ages. Why not make it a text or reference book for church study groups?

Highly recommend for everyone!!!

Wow! 5 stars all the way, this book is easy to follow and is extremely practical. It's loaded with great content and hands on tools that I already started to apply. The information I learned about building wealth has left a deep and lasting impact on my life. I especially enjoyed and learned from the stategies on tax savings, getting out of debt, staying out of debt, and quickly starting to creating extra cash flow every month. It was also entertaining with the authors personal stories which really hit home. Some of my other favorite parts where the ones that challenged my current belief systems. I was a bit skeptical when he introduced the idea that anyone could get started within 45 days but it's true! I've already started and while I won't be a millionaire next week-I'm certainly making real progress by adding over $2500 a month in monthly income. In short it lives up to it's subtitle "How to earn your first million and creat a life time of wealth". And on a closing note, I was taken back by the author's 30 day money back gaurantee. I wish some of the other wealth books I've purchased had the same guarantee. It's tough to find a really good one, ENJOY!

This book is awesome...It is written in such a way that it totally keeps your focus (with a smile) and allows you to interact with the words on the page. I have learned so much and am excited to be changing my financial future at this very moment...This is not a book that you will read and lay down and think I need to do that but it is a book that won't allow you to lay it down without doing what it says....It is a very powerful book with real stratigies and how to's that anybody can do and become a somebody right now.....

This book can easily be read in one evening, but will stay with you for years. Attorney Chantilis has collected an amazing number of sayings on morality and ethics. He also puts in some meaningful personal experiences that make the book special. The chapter on Man's Best Friend is a tear-jerker for dog lovers.

Who says great thoughts have to be complex? Not Peter.

On March 6, 1999, Peter Chantilis passed away unexpectedly. I knew Peter Chantilis. He was a friend and a fellow professional speaker. This is not an objective review.

Rather it is a passionate review of a great book by a great man.

Peter had developed his original rules and sent them in to "Dear Abby". When published they generated mail, phone calls and faxes. They evolved into this book.

The Do Right Rules aren't anything you couldn't figure out for yourself. The difference is that most of us haven't taken the time to figure them out. Peter did. And he took the time to write them down to share them with us.

The book is an easy read. The messages are simple messages. But, the rules, and the inspirational stories that accompany them will stick with you, and help you to change your life.

This is a book you will want to give your friends, your co-workers and your children.

While in Moscow, we were able to see the traveling exhibition of Faberge eggs and pick up this book. The exhibition itself was stunning - the individual settings were chosen especially for the particular egg, the accompanying commentary intriguing, the lighting spectacular.

The only thing that compared to the eggs themselves was this book which is one of the best of its type. It is large and the photographs and descriptions lush. One is transported back in time to the days of Tsars and Orthodoxy and the now disappeared Russian craftsmanship. This is a must for your coffee table.

Outstanding work...

Review Date: 2007-03-26
Undoubtedly, Robert Forbes has written with "For Europe : ..." the most precise, objective, accurate (to that date) and exciting account about the french serving in the Waffen SS between 1943 and 1945 and notably in the 33rd Grenadier Division of the SS "Charlemagne".

Forbes details the different backgrounds of the frenchmen (from working class to aristocracy!) who opted for a military collaboration with the germans, their motives ('greater europe', anti-communism), their training (tough but too short), their military achievements (as good as it could have been) on the eastern front and finaly their end in the third's reich capital, Berlin...

The author separates the two main formations of the frenchmen serving in the Waffen SS. The french SS "Assault Brigade" and the "Charlemagne" division. If the first was made solely of volunteers for the ss and was well equiped and correctly trained, the second was a mix of different collaborating french formations (from the Heer L.V.F infantry regiment to the Organisation Todt labor units...).

While the "Assault Brigade" performed very well but suffered high losses during the red army great offensive of july 1944, the "Charlemagne", poorly equiped, without tank and aerial support, undertrained and without most of its specialists, had a variable combat record : If all units did their best to halt the red army formations, inflicting to the soviets heavy losses, some managed to maintain some cohesion while other rapidly disintagrated... For the frenchmen, it was a bloodbath...

Virtually distroyed in february-march 1945 in pomerania, the "Charlemagne" and its survivors were reorganised. Whose from the "Assault Brigade" and the LVF choosed to continue the fight. Most of them would be sent to their death by defending fanatically Hitler's Bunker... The others, mainly from the 'milice française' ranks opted to serve in contruction battalions. It has to be said that men from the milice didn't have frontline experience for most of them and consequently, they sustained the highest losses... That is why their morale was very low...

Forbes has done a good job with 'For Europe...'. It is well written and includes numerous veteran sources. It is not a propagandist book about whose who joined the waffen ss. It is just an honest try to EXPLAIN why so many frenchmen joined... Many mistakes from orther authors are corrected. The military accomplishments of the SS frenchmen are accurately described but not exagerated.

Finaly that book is probably the best testimony about these men who believed fighting for their country, "for europe" and against "the communist threat" by joining nazi germany.

Rare Insight into Foreign Volunteers

Review Date: 2007-01-31
This is one of those rare books that gives an insight into the Foreign Volunteers of the Waffen SS, in this case French members of the Charlemange Division.
Formed originally as a Sturmbrigade the unit grew into a formidable fighting force which fought its way through Galicia, Pomerania, Danzig and finally its destruction in the inferno of Berlin.
I was amazed at how Frenchmen for a variety of reasons would join such an organisation as the Waffen SS, but the various reasons why these men joined are varied and complex.
Many of these men were extremely proud to belong to the Waffen SS and had volunteered gladly, others as the fortunes of Germany wavered opted to join to escape the vengance of the French people who many had helped to suppress in such units as the Milice.
Its fighting spirit never wavered and even in the final battle for Berlin its soldiers fought to the bitter end in tank hunting units armed with panzerfaust where they were extremely effective.
The book is very long over 500 pages with a few maps of the battlegrounds and pictures of some of the volunteers. I found it to be a very easy read and appears to be very well researched with lots of footnotes to explain parts of the story.
The book has many many personal accounts of the men who fought in the unit and where possible lists the fate of the survivors, where some fought in Indo China (on both sides !) and others were not so lucky who were executed.
It also deals with a war crime which I did not know about, where 12 French SS Volunteers who had been captured by the free French Army forces were executed.
This is an impressive book well written and researched and I highly recommend this book to others

French Soldiers in German Service
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-29
I picked up this book because I had long wondered about the people who joined the Nazi Army. I couldn't imagine why anyone from outside Germany would do that. This book answered those questions.

They joined for various reasons, but mostly because they were still kids - 17 years old was common. They looked at their life in France and were attracted to the colors. Some were admirers of Germany. Some were going with the winners. Some were anti-communist and wanted to fight them in Russia. In short all of the reasons that people of all types join the military. It becomes easier to understand as you hear the stories of the individuals.

After that, when the units had been formed, this is a story of what the French units did for the remainder of the war. In this area the book is extremely complete. It seems that every action, no matter how small is covered in great detail. Especially fascinating is the chapter on the post war years where it seems that the treatment of the returning soldiers was almost arbitrary in nature with some going to jail, some being set free, some joining the French army to fight in Indo-China.

All in all, a fascinating book, extremely detailed in its research and presentation.

A Truly Monumental Work

This subject must have been a fixation of the author's for decades. Otherwise he never would have been able to produce this book. Every contact with th enemy is documented as well as keeping track of the division's ever changing order of battle and equipment. Every officer in the division must have been mentioned by the time the book ends. Details of recruitment and training are also included. If a squad knocked out a tank on 24 Feb 1945 then it's in the book. The author also gives alternate views of an action if first hand accounts differ. Of course any book that is this detailed does not flow like a novel, it can be heavy going at times. But the payoff it acquiring detailed knowledge of the French volunteers in the Waffen SS and even other French paramilitaries fighting on the Eastern Front. One minor quibble is the lack of maps. As with most military histories maps are key to understanding the combat narratives. This book as few maps and the ones it does have are poor. But if the topic of the foreigners who were willing to fight for Hitler interests you this book is a must.

If you thought the TNT "Pirates of Silicon Valley" was good, this expounds so much the TV show left out. This story held me spellbound as it encompassed the whole history of the modern computer. It starts with a young college professor who dwells on the binary numbers taught to him by his mother. He makes a drum with paper capacitors that when spun, the drum would charge the paper and he could perform calculations.

You will understand why Bill Gates is a billionaire - he is probably one the most ruthless & resourceful people ever. Learn how his unkempt appearance is part of his strategy to destroy his competitors.

The whole book read like a mystery novel. Anyone in the IT world will realize that they only had a few pieces of the story - this book fills in the blanks. The insights of the author are amazing. I've read hundreds of books - this is the best secular book I've ever read.

Tales Well-Told

These really are "stories" rather than commentaries. A born storyteller, Young presents what he calls "inspiring tales of the entrepreneurs and inventors who revolutionized modern business." They include the "pioneers and pirates" who developed the prototype for the first commercial computers as well as Thomas J. Watson, Jr., William Shockley, Jack Kilby, Jay Forrester, Edwin De Castro, Douglas Engelbart, Bob Noyce, Andy Grove, & Gordon Moore, Edward Roberts, Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak, Don Estridge, Lew Eggbrecht, Bill Gates & Paul Allen, Tom Carter, Bill McGowan, Craig McCaw, Bob Taylor, Steve Case, and Marc Andreesen.

Perhaps at least a few of these names are unfamiliar to you. That is one of the great benefits of this book: It introduces a "cast" of literally hundreds of different "characters", most of them probably unfamiliar to most readers. I was fascinated to learn how important their "roles" were...how significant the impact of their work has proven to be.

For whom will this book be of greatest interest? Probably for those such as I who enjoy a story well-told, who have a keen interest in knowing more about various "entrepreneurs and inventors who revolutionized modern business", and who appreciate having what amounts to a frame-of-reference within which to understand current and future developments. Also, Young's book will suggest additional readings such as full-length biographies of the major "characters" in the "tales" he has told so well.

"A Handful of Summers" is the most informative and entertaining book on tennis I've read.

But the 1997 HarperCollins edition is dreadful: the paper quality is poor, and -- most importantly -- all the photographs are missing. I was so disgusted with it I returned it to Amazon and bought a second-hand copy instead.

The five-star rating is for the writing, not the edition.

I think this book was named the best book on tennis by some or other panel. Though I have not read all that many books on the sport, I cannot imagine a better book on tennis, or any other sport for that matter. Forbes is a delightful author, writing with gentle wit and charm about his childhood on a farm in the Eastern Cape, his tennis career and his life after tennis. Reading the book it is impossible not to mourn the passing of an era when sport was played for the enjoyment thereof, and sports star were friends.

A book that should be read by everybody, not only people interested in tennis or sport.

A writen account of tennis when the game was pure.

Gordon Forbes has captured the essence of what sport used to and should still be. From South African farmlands to the lawns of Wimbledon "Forbsie" paints a humorous picture of tennis in the fifties and sixtys. The cast of characters become personal friends and the author like a big brother. A Handful of Summers is among the classics on my bookshelf.

You don't need to be a tennis buff to find this hilarious!

This is a journey through one man's life in an era so different from today. An insight into the world of 'amateur' tennis and its twists of professionalism. An era when tennis was played for the joy of the game, travelling, a varied existence, and a lack of anything better to do!

This traces the realities of life on the tennis tour in the 50s and 60s and the ups and downs which went with it, especially given that Gordon Forbes was from a culture as complex as that of South Africa.

This books gets you really involved in the lives of some of the greatest tennis legends of all time, and others who strove to reach their heady heights, but never quite made it to the top! This book contains so much passion and honesty that it draws you in. You can almost believe that you are right beside these tennis greats, treading in their every footstep, hearing their every breath. You feel as if you grew up with them, laughed their every laugh, and suffered their every defeat.

This is a must for every lover of tennis, and should not be written off by those who have no interest in the game. This is no ordinary tennis chronicle.

There is no question that this is a book to be read out loud. And a clever one at that- thank God, because if the last week is any indication I'm going to be reading this one to my son nightly until my daughter is old enough to take his place. The art is nothing short of wonderful, and finding the hidden mouse on every page seems to be a constant source of delight.

Clever and Fun

Adults and kids alike will get a kick out of the rhymes and pictures. Each of the animals in this book have their own quippy little story-like poems. At bedtime you don't have to read the whole book, just pick out some of your favorite animal poems. Also enjoy looking for the hidden mouse on each page.

Fun to read and look at

If you were a fan of the clever rhymes of Ogden Nash and you loved the drawings of Dr. Zeuss, then Feast on this Beastly Book. The text will entertain the adults, while the pictures twirl the kids. See if they can find the mouse. There is one in every drawing. And there is a picture for every story. Those pictures are a little more cutting in their social satire as is the versatile verse, than Ogden Nash or Dr. Zeuss. But hey, this is the 21st century.
