I thought this book was written by someone who owned a restaurant in Mexico, but was pleasantly surprised to find out the location was in Austin Texas. This book consists of recipes that are on their menu inspired by authentic Mexican connoisseurs like Diana Kennedy and former head chef Roberto Santibanez who now owns the New York based Mexican chain Rosa Mexicanos. Having lived for years in Mexico this has taken me back to the culinary culture that I love and miss dearly. The artwork that hangs in the restaurant is beautifully displayed as is the history. This is definitely a go to book since the recipes are right on to what I remember in Mexico. Definitely worth getting, but remember this is an authentic Mexican cookbook and not a Tex Mex cookbook.

Beautiful book, fabulous food!

I do not cook- until now. We visited this restaurant in Austin and were so impressed by the beauty of the location that when I went home, I went online and purchased the cookbook. My only intention was to be an "armchair cook" until I read how easy most of the recipes are! I'm shocked to say it, but everything has been easy and delicious. Try it, you'll love it.

This book is a must for every Mexian food lover and art. I have attended a cooking glass by them and have eaten brunch at their restaurant. Absolutely fantastic. The almond flan is superb and very easy to prepare in a blender. The chicken in banana leaves is also a standout. Recipes are fairly easy to understand and prepare, it just takes a bit of time.

The cookbook Fonda San Miguel: Thirty years of Food and Art seems to be one of those titles you see from time to time, when an established restaurant puts together a collection of recipes and a publisher hopes that name recognition will move copies. But open the cover, try some of the recipes, and you find a culinary gem.

Fonda San Miguel is a well-regarded restaurant in Austin offering Mexican cuisine. Author credits are co-founders Tom Gilliland (runs the front of the house) and Miguel Ravago (the chef) as well as "text by" Virginia B. Wood, whom is an Austin writer. The foreword is by noted Mexican cuisine expert Diana Kennedy, who apparently is a friend of the founders and whose work has inspired some of the dishes.

From first glance, the book is visually sumptuous: all color photography of the recipes and art in the restaurant with attractive design, hardbound. And here comes the first of my few quibbles: even though the publisher, Shearer Publishing, may have bought the rights to the photography, or even done it in-house, it should have given full credit to the people responsible for the actual photographic and food styling work. There also should have been better photo editing; I noticed a few out-of-focus images, one of which seemed planned and appropriate although the others looked like mistakes.

The recipes, though - marvelous. I tried four for a family dinner: guacamole, Sopa de Elote (a smooth corn soup served with roasted chiles and cheese), Adoba Sauce (pork marinade made with ancho chiles, garlic, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, and black peppercorns), and Comote Y PiƱa (baked sweet potato puree with pineapple). The results were uniformly excellent. Unlike many cookbook recipes, I found that I could use each of these without modification or even adjusting amounts, which is pretty rare. I do wish that when a recipe referred to a preparation or technique elsewhere in the book that there was a page number associated, but, again, I did say quibbles.

The book originally came out in 2005, which does have me wondering why the PR firm that sent the copy is promoting it now, but it's nice to see that someone is taking an active interest in promotion this excellent volume.

This little guide entertained me, and helped us find some otherwise lesser known Mexico City dining spots. I like its personal, quirky character.

It does need a good going over by a more demanding editor to clean up a few flaws, such as missing items on the maps. There are key listings, in some cases, but no corresponding locator number on the map. The maps are very small scale and of low quality.

But, overall, it's a good buy for the Mexico City food aficionado.

I was so excited to see that someone who loves to eat had finally written a guide to street food in Mexico City! This book is everything for which I had hoped. Nick Gilman shares personalized, specific information how to find the places, what to expect once there and explains food terms to clarify their culinary differences. Nick made me feel like I was one of his friends visiting him in Mexico City and he was telling me about some of his favorite places for food, giving all the insider details. I have already circled and underlined all the places where I want to eat so it will be like one treasure hunt after another.

I carried Good Food in Mexico City with me every day of my first visit to DF, and I'm very pleased (and fortunate) to have had it with me. It is a concise - and in my experience, accurate - overview of the vernacular cuisines, restaurants, food stands, and markets of popular areas of an immense city with immense (and often exotic) food options. The type is legible, the order is logical, and the size is portable. It includes a glossary that is especially useful (though not exhaustive), helpful maps, good indices, and there is sound, candid advice on matters such as eating street food. I only scratched the surface but I hope to return and this book will certainly be with me.

We've just returned from our first visit to Oaxaca. The xeroxed copy of the Oaxaca section from Cooks Tour was the second most used reference (the street map was first). Since we bought this book nearly a decade ago, it's been the basic resource for information on fondas, markets, local specialties etc. Some of the recipes are such staples that I've forgotten their source until I run across them when using the book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This is a great cookbook. I've traveled a lot in Mexico and cooked a lot of Mexican food, using the classic cookbooks like Diana Kennedy's. The recipes that I've tried in this one are uniformly terrific. Just as important, the accompanying narratives and photos draw you back into the whole sensual experience of Mexico, so both the cooking and the eating take on an added dimension of rich experience.

This book rocks! I don't know if Mr. Sando is used to Taco Bell or what? The food I have made form this book has all been superb. The flavor is authentic. Some of the recipies are simple and some quite involved! Not every recipe needs a list of 20+ ingredients and 3 pages of instructions to be wonderfully flavorful. The many types of moles are some of the best I have ever had. Anyone who looks in cookbooks for travel tips is delusional. Great cookbook!

Unlike other health books which deal only with a specific illness or particular health fad, this is a book about how to be involved as a health care consumer. Though the book was written by physicians, the authors encourage readers to stop blindly taking doctor's advice. Sure, your physician has a medical degree and you probably don't, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be involved -- as the title indicates, it is indeed your body and your health, not your doctor's. Though a reference book, the text is in plain accessible (including a straight-forward, detailed glossary of medical terms). It primarily addresses what goes on during a medical visit from your doctor's perspective and explains how to make the most of that time, how to get your questions in, and work with your doctor to solve your medical problems. In includes information on preventative care, common illnesses at each life stage, troublesome symptoms, explanations of common medical tests, and a list of internet medical resources (as well as explanations of how to separate out reliable internet medical resources from phony ones). It is a book for anyone who has ever left a doctor's appointment feeling more like a witness then an active participant.

Anyone interested in how to manage their own health care and that of their family should have this book. It is a great reference, easy to read manual with information on how to prepare for a visit to the physician, what to expect from your physician, and what all those tests mean in helping your health care giver treat you. The section on health related websites is especially helpful in knowing which sites are reliable.

If your physician is one of those that enters the room, asks a couple of questions while grasping the door knob with one hand expecting a quick exit, this book will teach you how to say "sit, stay until I AM ready for you to go".

I didn't think I could have as much fun as to sit within an audience watching as Laurie Mecham turns into Fonda AlaMode [as well as into Fonda's daughter, Crystal]. But this book is that much fun! It would be wonderful if Ms. Mecham could take her so-special Mormon-insider humor into a more widely understood church-woman comedy. I can't help envisioning Ms. Mecham as a deeply disappointed wife of a Promise-Keeper! But until then, anyone who has experienced Mormonism's women should not miss, "Special Living Lessons." Review Date: 2002-04-07
For anyone who has a daughter, niece, sister. For mothers who were once-upon-a-time daughters. For fathers, uncles and friends. This is required reading and requested sharing. It is a realistic definition of "empowering" -- but more, of "inspiring" -- girls to find/use their voices and goals within a society that still has a "pink and blue" mentality. The base -- an organization, Girls Incorporated, that has inspired millions of girls for more than 80 years to discover, stretch, and own their possibilities. The content is not anti-male but is full of realistic (and research-based) ideas to help young girls (based on Girls Inc. experience with girls nationwide) reach their full potential. Everyday tips and experiences; teachable moments; eye- and mind-opening opportunties. No lectures; no heavy research -- just a solid dose of reality. Valuable for grown-up girls, too! (Mid-life crisis gift??)

Helpful Ideas for Parents of Girls!

Review Date: 2001-07-11
This book reminded me of the thoughts I had when our younger daughter was born. How could my wife and I help her to have an open door to pursue the opportunities that meant the most to her? I wish this book had been available to us then!

Give this book to parents when their daughters are born.

The foreword by Ms. Jane Fonda particularly moved me. She describes how she went from being a person with strong ambitions to a teenager who was timid and concerned about how others would see her. For many years, her "inner voice" was lost, and she finds herself only recapturing it in her sixties.

The model of this book is to have girls know their rights as people and to be advocates of those rights for herself and others. Girls Inc. was founded in 1945 and has done good work in helping establish equal opportunity by gender.

The organization has established a bill of rights for girls that includes the right to:

-- "be themselves and to resist gender stereotypes"

-- "express themselves with originality and enthusiasm"

-- "take roles, to strive freely, and to take pride in success"

-- "accept and appreciate their bodies"

-- "have confidence in their selves and to be safe in the world"

-- "prepare for interesting work and economic independence."

Many people would agree that these are worthy goals. What I liked was that the book reported about research that Girls Inc. has conducted to find out how parents can help.

As you may have guessed, girls look to their Moms to lead the way. In a recent survey, 99 percent replied that Mom was their heroine and guide to planning their own lives. By describing her own life choices at the same age, Mom can help make these transitions more understandable and positive.

Further, Mom and Dad can work together to emphasize filling in experiences and knowledge that girls might not otherwise get. Why shouldn't girls find out how cars work? Sons will often benefit from the same instruction. I know I would have.

Unlike many books and research on gender issues, this book does not try to make males out as the villain of the problem. Instead, the book emphasizes how girls can become more knowledgeable, confident, and able to take care of themselves. I was especially impressed with the section called "My Future."

After you read and discuss this book, I suggest that you think back to where you lacked support (whether you were a girl or a boy) as a youngster. Will your children have the same issues? If so, how can you help them have better choices and capabilities? What other issues will your children have that you did not? How can you help with those?

Give your children the benefit of thinking through their lives carefully and knowledgeably . . . with as few limits as possible!

The ONLY Henry Fonda Biography Worth Reading!!

This book is pure pleasure from beginning to end. It feels like returning home to a wonderful, favourite place after a long time away, to find the hearth fires lighted and the lovely, familiar house redolent with the aroma of the evening meal. The musical sound of loved one's voices can be heard in the next room as the fire crackles...This is a warm, intimate visit with Henry Fonda, beginning long before he was famous. It is written by Howard Teichmann, as the stories were shared with him by Henry Fonda. Henry Fonda had always refused requests in past to authourise a biography, but he came to like and trust Mr. Teichmann and they created a beautiful tableau together.

Their collaboration took place during the last two years of Henry Fonda's life. This time period was before, during and following the filming of "On Golden Pond." It covers the early years in New York City, where he shared quarters with Jimmy Stewart and many more people of the same era. It follows him through his career and his personal life and it is an incredibly authentic treatise. It pulls no punches and if you like Henry Fonda before reading his life story, you will never forget him after you read this book!

This is the quintessential biography for Henry Fonda, although, technically it is an autobiography. Whatever name you give it, it is one of my favourite books. There is not another book regarding him that comes close. This is a Winner!!

Since Henry Fonda resisted almost all his life to share his private life with the public, this book of Howard Teichman is probably the one and only book, that helps you getting to know Henry Fonda. You know him from screen and stage, but who is the man behind the actor ? This book tells you not only how he started acting on stage and in movies. It also shows his private life , family life, his personality and how he saw the world. It is simply not to understand, why this book is out of print.

As an experiment, I decided to use this book for two weeks with the suggested music. To my amazement, it really works! I'm just 20 and so it is a huge novelty not to follow a tv screen.
In the book, Jane doesn't just address aerobics, but where society places people in life, the enviroment and healthy eating.
I now have this workout on DVD so really use the book as reference to healthy living.
You would have thought that it would be hard to follow a book to workout with. But it isn't. For every move there are professionally taken indepth photographs with descriptions.
You really use this book until you remember the moves off by heart. But it's use doesn't stop there as it is jam packed with so much information.
And the funny thing is it feels better working out in the absense of a television screen.

GREAT FITNESS BOOK FOR BODY AND LIFE

I purchased this book based on three things. One I wanted to see an example of Jane Fonda's original 1982 workout(hard to find/expensive). Two I love almost all of JF workouts. Three the one review I read confirmed I needed this for my collection. This is truly a wonderful book I can see why it was a best seller. This book offers information on a wide range of subjects from self-esteem, diet, social and enviromental issues, not to mention the two workouts. This was a great buy.
This book offers a begginer and advanced workout. Each workout begins with warm-up and ends with a cool down. At the begging of each exercise routine there is a list of music that could accompany the exercise. This can be used as a guide to choosing your own music. Both routines have an aerobics, arms, waist, abs, hips and thighs, bottocks. The workouts last about 30-45 for beginner and 40-60 mins for advanced. The cardio portion of both workouts are simple but short, however you can easily extend it.
This workout is great for the flexibility it offers. This is a workout that you can truly make your own. You could even do it while you are watching television. One of the things I really liked was making my own music to this workout. Being abel to chose your own music that you enjoy, really keeps you going. This is great if you like to make compilation tapes or cds.
Now I know what your thinking I don't go for exercise books. And for the most part I would agree, with all the page turning reading descriptions and the pictures that make no sense. But this is written and shown in a very clear manner. Over time this should just be a guide. Because you should start to memorize the workout.
This is a great workout if your short on time or you don't feel like going to the gym of even putting a exercise tape in the vcr. This workout out is total body toning. You could even use light hand weights during some of the arm movements for extra work. However some of the movements can be jarring and hard on the joints. Just modify it to fit your own personal needs. If it feels wrong don't do it. If you like this workout I would recommend Jane Fonda's New Workout Book or VHS and Jane Fonda's Women Coming of Age and Jane Fonda's Easy Going Workout.

Let me start by saying that before I discovered this book, I hated to "eat nutritiously" because it was a hassle to prepare healthy meals and in addition they always tasted so bland; I would end up craving sweets to compensate. In her book, Jeanne convinced me to try a new way of eating: 6 small meals which are high in protein and include a bit of low sugar carbs and a tiny bit of fat. After just one day of eating this way, my energy soared! My sugar cravings went away, and I didn't feel hungry and want to snack all day like I used to do.
Also, I don't know what to rave about first: the fact that her menus are incredibly easy to prepare or the fact that the food is genuinely delicious! Last night I had pasta with pesto covered with broccoli and turkey sausage stirfried in olive oil. Yum! It took about 15 minutes to prepare.
Finally, she has a section in the menus called, "If you're still hungry..." which tells you what you can add to that particular meal if necessary. (Surprisingly, I haven't needed to do this - the meals satisfy me.) You won't starve on this plan and you'll be amazed at how easy it is and how good it feels to eat this way.
