Gravely Disappointing Collection Of Essays About "Montana" Characters The Authors Attempt To Paint As "Jerks"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-20
Review Date: 2008-09-20
It saddens me that this book was not better edited and compiled. I have personally met several of the authors, and know they
are more capable than the essays they have written for this book. The essays have no footnotes, relying instead upon listing
their sources at the end of the essay. Moreover, the stories are not all that interesting, and one "jerk" qualifies only
because her trial took place in Libby, Montana, since she killed her husband on the train while it was in northwestern Montana
("Wine, Women, and Whiz Wagons: The Life and Crimes of Vera Prosser" by Jodie Foley).
I purchased the book because the story about "Liver Eating Johnston" (the person allegedly portrayed in the film "Jeremiah Johnson") was referenced in Wikapedia. However, "In League With the Devil: Boone Helm and "Liver Eatin' Johnston" by Jon Axline was a complete farce for anyone who has read a thing about John Johnston. Indeed, as far as I am concerned, the author completely failed to justify his warrant that Johnston was a "jerk" of any sort.
At least one of the stories, "Haymarket Square: Anatomey of a Lynching" by Angie Gifford and Dave Walter, was partially--if not completely--printed in the Helena Independent Record. And that is where all of fourteen of the stories should have been published. But, I imagine that this book, and its predecessor ("Speaking Ill of the Dead"), were compiled to sell to tourist at the Montana Historical Society. (Dave, if I am stepping too hard on your toes I apologize, because I know that you mean well).
If you are just looking for a quick read about quirky/criminal people and events, you might like the book. As a sociologist who has taught about battered women syndrome as a defense, I did find it interesting that three of the essays were about women who used, or attempted to use, (spousal) physical abuse as a defense for killing. Since many people think of this as a late 1900s phenomenon, the fact that one story takes place in the late 1800s, and two occur around 1910-20, is very intriguing and shows that not everything we think is new, is really new.
If this review was not helpful to you, I would appreciate learning the reason(s) so I can improve my reviews. My goal is to provide help to potential buyers, not get into any arguments. So, if you only disagree with my opinion, could you please say so in the comments and not indicate that the review was not helpful. Thanks.

The "If the Wolf Were an Octopus" books are wonderful tools for involving students in answering questions from Bloom's taxonomy,
including: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. This particular book for Grades
5 to 6 lists questions for book titles for those (give or take) grade levels. However, the majority of my students will
not have read most of these books: The Secret of Poplar Island, Taking Control, Kipton & Gruff, The Dragon Charmer, Harly
Weaver and the Race Across America, For the Love of Gold, They Would Never be Friends, Make Me Disappear, Stray Cat, Ben
and Me, etc. I was looking for the "Wolf/Octopus" book containing questions for nursery rhymes such as "Hansel and Gretel".

Does anyone review these things?

My daugher has to use this book for 10th grade glass. She likes it though because it shows how to do the problems. You can
actually use it to see how to complete an assignment. That seems like a given, but was not the case with previous texts she
had to use.

I spent quite a bit of money on this book($74.00). Of course it was listed under the 7th edition, which is the edition my
son needed for private school. I received this edition instead(6th). He is unable to use this book so I had to buy the 7th
edition from the school which was $143.00. I will never buy another text book from this vendor again. I have spent so much
money on private school to begin with, then get hit with buying two books for one class!?!?!?!
Never received!!!!

This book is poor. Try Michael Sullivan's books instead. This book doesn't show you how to do the majority of the problems.
I'm mostly flipping through the pages, trying to find the techniques, formulas, etc... but they are not there. I need this
book for class (homework), but I'm using Sullivan's books to actually learn the material. If you have to use this book (like
me), don't get discouraged. The material isn't difficult (and it's actually enjoyable) if you learn it step by step. This
book, unfortunately, is another representation of mathematicians trying to explain easy material in a needlessly complicated
way. Get another book before thinking you're not a math person.

This is worse than nothing -- droning reading of the Rules, no highlighting of differences between Cal. & Fed rules, impossible
to take notes from. Monumental waste of time (and who has time to waste when studying for the bar?)
Terrible!

A rambling, incoherent, and confusing lecture on California evidence by someone (from Ronald Reagan University?) who is clearly
reading (in a monotone, boring voice). If you're taking notes, you need to keep pausing because the speaker doesn't repeat
anything, as a real lecturer would. Don't expect a PMBR type lecture here. The 4 discs look like they were burned on someone's
home PC and do not even come with a case. Don't buy it! Total Garbage.

WRONG BOOK- ISBN # in Amazon is for two different books- be careful!!

Amazon's database combines two very different ISBNs for two very different books to come up with the same book. I wanted the
7th edition PreCalculus: graphical, numerical, algebraic ISBN 013227650-X but received Student's Solutions Manual to accompany
Precalculus: Functions & Graphs fourth edition ISBN#020169975-3. Both books are by Franklin Demana et al.
If you put in either ISBN#, the same book appears on Amazon's website.
Be careful about what you order! If you want the text book with the Ferris Wheel on the cover, don't order the paperback! After multiple emails with the seller, I am out 20% for re-stocking, shipping cost of sending it back to him, and the loss of the expedited shipping ($9.95) I paid to get a totally wrong book.

I purchased this product because it was advertised as a comprehensive audio course to become a "certified homeopathy practitioner".
It was not as it was advertised: It was not comprehensive. It contains 4 CDs: one has MS word documents and PDF files; the
other three are audio. The documents, both the Word and the PDF formats had serious typos; in some cases it was nearly impossible
to determine what was supposed to be said. Even the names of some of the homeopathic remedies were spelled wrong.
The audio CDs were short (about 30 minutes each); nearly 1 1/2 CDs discussed the remedies that were on the Word or PDF files. There was a lot of overlap.
What came with the CD set was a small slip of paper saying that to be certified as a "homeopathy practitioner," all you needed to do was send $25 with a 3-page essay about your goals of your future occupation, why you want to practice it, and your approach to ethical consideration. The certification was to come from Ronald Reagan University (at the same address as the publisher and author).
I am a Naturopathic Doctor specializing in Classical Homeopathy--I know what homeopathy is all about. My recommendation is that you save your money and look elsewhere for something more professional that will teach you what you need to learn to be a true certified homeopathic health professional. There are other audio courses from long-standing homeopathic universities. If you are a beginner and want to begin your understanding of homeopathy, consider a book by Ullman, Kent or Hahnemann; these authors are able to impart information in an understandable way without major typos and mispelled remedies.
Best wishes...

It is really hard to read, over technical and just drones on with key words.
The companion website is the singularly worst student/instructor companion website I have ever had the displeasure to use.
