A Maid's Tragedy is one of the most effective of all Jacobean plays. Craik tells us that `it is only in the theatre that its
power can be fully appreciated,' but in fact it reads extremely well, with its limited cast and uncluttered dramatic action.
What puts it above most other revenge tragedies of its period is not profundity (as in Hamlet or The Broken Heart) but extraordinary
dramatic invention and a technique able to draw the maximum effect out of each dramatic idea. The most amazing scene of all
is that of the wedding night in which the bride rejects consummation, revealing that she is the king's mistress and that the
purpose of the marriage (arranged by the king) was simply to provide a cloak under which their liaison could continue unsuspected:
the bride's brazenness and the poor groom's horror and humiliation could not be more powerfully conveyed. Later scenes are
equally effective and equally sure in their presentation.
The huge merit of this edition lies not in its introduction (which is comparatively brief and leaves a lot unexplored) but in the detailed annotation, where Craik answers almost all the reader's questions about what difficult lines actually mean, and suggests many convincing emendations, many of them modestly relegated to the footnotes.
This new `digital, on demand' edition has ugly, very thick print, that is not up to this publisher's usual standards.

Harold is a psychologist who dreams of adventure, but when his boss develops a theory which lets a person transport himself
into any world he can imagine, he finds himself on the adventure of a lifetime - one in which he travels through mythology's
finest gods and adventurers. DeCamp and Pratt's 'Enchanter' stories follow his fantasy encounters and makes for engrossing,
fun reading especially recommended for fantasy libraries also holding DeCamp's works.

A rich theology of "Holy Spirit baptism"

There's a good chance you've never heard of John Fletcher, and Larry Wood is trying to rectify that lack. John Fletcher
was the saint of the early Methodist movement--a deeply pious Christian mystic who had a rich theology of the baptism of the
Holy Spirit. John Wesley designated Fletcher as his successor, but Fletcher died six years before Wesley did. Still, for
over a century after his death, Fletcher's writings were Methodist theological and devotional standards.
The title says it all: This book probes the meaning of the motif of Pentecost in early Methodism. Wood explores the role of John Fletcher as the systematizer of John Wesley's theological vision, and in the process challenges the reigning orthodoxy in Wesley studies. Twentieth century Wesley scholars have generally distanced Wesley from Fletcher, claiming that Fletcher's views of entire sanctification as the "baptism of the Spirit" were a later malignant mutation. But, in thorough detail, Wood shows that Wesley entirely endorsed Fletcher's understanding and was himself strongly influenced by it; moreover, the early Methodist movement as a whole was saturated with Fletcher's ideas, out of which eventually grew the Holiness movement in the nineteenth century and the Pentecostal movement in the twentieth.
As erudite as all of this might sound, this book is actually a good read! Wood's prose moves rapidly, and although his scholarship is thorough, it doesn't often get bogged down in minutia. The book's aims are indeed scholarly, but it has a real devotional quality to it. It truly melds "head" and "heart." The book deserves a wider readership than its lengthy title (and price) might suggest, and it should spur ecumenical dialogue between not only the Pentecostal and Methodist families, but also Anglicans, Roman Catholics, and Orthodox.

Abraham is used to illustrate how God is involved in both "time" and "place" in the life of a believer. "A day sooner, or a day later, would not have answered the purpose," Dr. Carson writes. He adds, "...at this moment, at this very spot where it is needed."
Consider his reflection on how providence is planned as God guides individuals to the mate of His choice for them: "How many things, apparently accidental, are necessary to open a way to the acquaintance of those who are afterwards to be married to each other! Husbands and wives may be born for each other, as much as Eve was formed for Adam, while their marriage depends on the most trifling accident." He describes how what appears to be natural to us in the physical arena, is designed by God mysteriously in the spiritual dimension.
This book is particularly inspirational. He teaches directly from the Bible and shows how the principles of God's guidance unfold in our lives today. You'll come away from this realization with a renewed sense of humble thankfulness for God's care.
