Forest Patrol-An Epic Tale

Forest Patrol, written in the early 1900's describes the life of a young man thrust into the job head ranger of an entire district of land. The flowing style use in the book create images that allow you to see and experience the outdoors and to actually feel what it was to be a ranger, the title character John Belden (19y/o) Needs to trap poachers, enforce game laws, Provide raw materials for the townspeople, and most of all not get killed when Poley Harris comes huntin' for the his job. No book of this type that I have yet encountered, has captivated me so much. Through poignant descriptive detail, the author(Kjelgaard) made me feel as a ranger would, hear as a ranger would and think as a ranger would, I recommend this book to anyone who hears the call of the wild and is drawn to the unknown.

Janet Fletcher is one of America's best cooks and cookbook authors. I've been an avid fan of her recipes since her first pasta book and this book not only meets it in offering inventive and absolutely delicious recipes it might even surpass it. There's a recipe for everyone. Although Italians frown on wiping up any remaining pasta sauce with bread, you'll want to lick your plate clean when you finish one of these recipes. While not all of the ingredients are necessarily in your local supermarket, most are and the others are worth finding. And the author offers lots of helpful information about pasta. This book will make everyone a pasta and vegetable lover!

1886 ARIZONA TERRITORY WITH GENERAL CROOK AND CHARLES R. LUMMIS
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Review Date: 2008-02-24
Ever hear of Charles Lummis? No. Well, he was the editor of The Los Angeles Times sent to Arizona Territory in the spring of 1886 to investigate the latest Apache war, sending dispatches back to the Times. This book is comprised of those dispatches from April and May, 1886. His interviews with General Crook provide an up close view of the General and his views.
Lummis felt that Crook was under unfair criticism from some residents of the Territory, especially many in the Tucson-Tombstone area involved with the trader profit ring who wanted General Crook gone so the war would continue. Though miners, farmers, and settlers all wanted the Apache war ended, many traders and corrupt Indian agents most definitely did not. The War Department during the wars brought two million dollars per year into the Territory, at a time when the average wage for most was only a dollar per day. The Territory had little industry to raise money, so most were very happy and dependent on the $2,000,000 federal government monies.
One of the worst traders, rustlers, & all around criminal, was a Swiss-American man named Tribolet, who is on record as saying "it is money in my pockets to have those fellows out". The 'fellows' of course were the raiding Apaches to whom Tribolet sold booze and other items thereby reaping large profits. He once even presented Geronimo with a free magnum of champagne. Tribolet also was the cause of this latest break away from Crook's forces, shortly after they had surrendered, getting the Apaches drunk he told them not to believe in Crook's promises. Frightened, the surrendered Apaches now fled in the reverse direction back to the Sierra Madre in Mexico.
Crook began using Apache scouts in 1872 feeling only the Apache could equal another Apache. He felt too they had always given honorable service, and held the Chiricahua up as the best of the best where scouts were concerned. Although Crook also used the Tonto, Yuma, Mojave, as well as other Apaches such as San Carlos, White Mountain, and Warm Springs as scouts. Many citizens called for getting rid of these scouts, especially men such as "Buckskin" Frank Leslie, later chief of scouts for Crook, not because the Apache scouts weren't good or effective, but more practically the disenchanted whites wanted the Apache's jobs.
There is so much more in this newspaper history of the last Apache war. For anyone interested in the Apache wars of Arizona Territory in 1886, this book would seem mandatory. Several years back another book from this time period also by Charles R. Lummis saw print by Dan L. Trapp: DATELINE FORT BOWIE. Both will afford the reader information on the Apache wars not available anywhere else.

The author Donna Fletcher Crow is a wonderful storyteller. She has a way of bringing you right into the scene with her characters. The characters seem like real people that you know. You find that you identify with their hopes as well as their fears. She tells her stories around historical happenings resulting in your entertainment as well as teaching you something. Her teaching on Christianity seems to be right on...her characters strive for a stonger Faith rather than an outward appearence of good works. I really love this lady's work.

Simon's style takes some getting used to and a great deal of patience and concentration by the reader. Persistence pays off with insights into the waste and uselessness of war, not a book for those interested in a just a good read.

I'm a publcist for a growing group of genre and literary authors who want me to help them publicize their books. GETTING PUBLICITY by Tana Fletcher and Julia Rockler has been of enormous help in my work, allowing me to customize PR campaigns in creative, yet afforable, economic ways. The book is extremely well organized, as well as having well thought out examples and guidelines that can contrribute toward the effective marketing of an individual person's book, or even a for-profit business or non-profit organization. I've also used the book as a recommended teaching tool in a course called "Getting Publicity for Writers and Others." I look forward to buying the 3rd edition as soon as it comes out!

My children love this book. It is very informative, yet simple. I like that God is given the glory for the creation of space and all that is in it. It talks about the different sizes and colors of stars(including the sun), as well as their varying temperatures. It discusses galaxies, constellations, comets, moons, asteroids, and meteors. It explains what a planet is and the solar system. In the end it encourages children to go to the bible to find out more about God's creation. We will look for more of these books as a way to introduce our children to science from a christian perspective.

This is truly a heartfelt and courageous story about one of America's #1 nightmares, namely, drug abuse. It strikes one out of every three families and has been proven fatal in many cases. However, rarily do we hear of people going public with their personal trauma and degradation in order to help others. After having read this book, it will give you a totally different insight about the effects of drugs and addiction. It is an act of God that a person can sustain and live to tell about such a tragedy of events.
