'Rescue' carries on the series' tradition of choice excerpts (19) from well-and lesser-known authors. Therein lies the beauty of this series - I had never heard of Spike Walker (!) but after reading the riveting excerpt in 'Rescue' I ran out and bought both his books. Two of the selections are fiction, not my taste, but the other 17 tales of peril, shipwrecks, avalanches and plane crashes will have you reading all night. The stories range from professionals who take one risk too many to everyday folks who find themselves over their heads without warning. A great gift book for anyone who thrives on adventure and especially if you you know someone in search/rescue or the Coast Guard. Get all the books in this series - I have and I love 'em!

A Great Halloween Story (and scary, too!)

I highly recommend this because I've seen the excerpt. A Retroville ghost story? Nah. It's a farmer in disguise! I mean, come on! So he was the one who started the whole scary story. It's not a real story anyway. The farmer made up that story to scare kids, you know that. Anyway, since I am a Jimmy Neutron fan, I would encourage everyone to read Return of the Pumpkin Head because it's a really cool book!

Rick Is Sick (Green Light Readers Level 1)

Fun and Engaging Easy Read for the Beginner
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-25
This beginning reader's book is enlivened by author/illustrator David McPhail's sense of humor and what look like watercolor pictures. McPhail's soft circular illustrations recall the Beatrix Potter books, as do the two animals at the center of the story. Jack, a jackrabbit, goes to Rick the bear's tree to play, but Rick is sick. Jack wants to help, but when he gives Rick something warm to drink it's too hot, and when he brings him a bag of ice to cool down, Rick is too cold. In a slightly confusing scene, Jack sits on Rick's chest to warm him up after the ice (which went between Rick's body and the covers). The helpful Jack finally gets so tired that he takes a nap with his bear friend, the bear looking fondly (and with a trace of bemusement) at his friend with one eye open.

The story is 14 pages long, with two sentences on every other page. . An additional five pages include an activity (make a "friendship award"), five questions about the story, and a page about David McPhail (which shows a recovered Rick playing jump rope with his pal Jack). Recommended by the publishers for ages 4 to 6, first grade, "Guided Reading Level--D," and "Reading Recover Level-6." First-graders and older kids may also enjoy hearing books from McPhail's very funny pig series, including "Pigs Ahoy," and "Pigs Galore."

A great old book of the faith
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-04
This book, an introduction to the rosary for young children, is a delight. MSGR John D. Fitzgerald created stories to illustrate the mysteries of the Catholic faith. (Since this book is from 1957, the Luminous Mysteries are not included.) The stories are easy to read and understand, and right on point. This is a great book for introducing children to one of the Church's most powerful prayers.

Rip's Secret Spot is a welcome addition to a great series of beginning readers. The words are appropriate and repetitive without being boring, and the story is simple, but well received by young readers. I use many titles from Green Light Readers as extra reading practice for students just past simple phonics readers and have found them to be beautifully illustrated, attractive, and satisfying for this group.

For young, restless people seeking to find a way....

I first read this book about 20-25 years ago. It was a watershed moment for me to read how Robert Kennedy sought consensus for his views, and how he ran up against those who didn't care to be a force for change. One can feel through the pages (as I did) how RFK was continuously haunted by the death of his brother only one year prior to these interviews. This was the text that prompted me to participate in our democracy. As a young man, it also showed me how I could get more of what I wanted by seeking support for my own vision.

I never do really read books, also ones that are long and have small print like this one. But I was really into it. It explained everything I needed to know about one of my favorite baseball players. Of course I bought this book at the Cooperstown hall of fame where the book should be rewarded a plaque and where A-Rod will go. I read it and understood as a reader that preffers non-fiction, in 5 days I finsished it on the way to Six flags great adventure.

As Good As A Ken Burns Biography
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-01
This large-format album approximates the Fitzgerald personal scrapbook, mirroring the dazzling couple as they rush to stardom and fade into memory. Until seeing this closely, I had thought biographers had done their best. Not so. Scott and Zelda left more than a literary legacy here for others to hope and dream upon. It not only tracks their public life but Scott's private musings on his art, life and his literary score in the marketplace. His private and personal demands on his artistry, his private thoughts and hopes, his advice to his surviving daughter in a few letters are on exhibit. Whether in seclusion at the height of his fame or in seclusion, forgotten and underused in Hollywood, his focus on the details, running not from the past but to an uncertain almost unattainable perfection are displayed for posterity in this book. To me, this book and Budd Schulberg's "The Disenchanted," which sketches in the unknown Hollywood Fitzgerald with sympathy and understanding, more completely renders this literary inspiration.
