After the American Revolution, several thousand families came to settle in the western part of Quebec, later called Upper Canada, then Canada West and today Ontario. These settlers were former members of American Loyalist regiments, discharged British and German servicemen, and some civilians and refugees. They were offered grants of 200 acres of land on condition that they take an oath of allegiance and remain loyal to the British regime. The military and Loyalist arrivals who had come earlier received larger grants, generally in relation to their services to the Crown, their rank or status, and family size.

All settlers received certificates showing the location of the lots on which they were to clear land and build houses. First, however, it was necessary to establish who had the right to obtain title deeds, and in 1796 a proclamation was issued that required Loyalists and others to surrender their certificates in exchange for title deeds and to make a statement under oath in the district court as to their right to hold them.

Subsequently, thousands of settlers appeared before the magistrates in district courts throughout Upper Canada. The magistrates provided additional information in the records, which have been preserved in the National Archives of Canada and are usually called the District Loyalist Rolls of 1796. These rolls have been carefully transcribed for the first time by Dr. E. Keith Fitzgerald, who has supplemented the 4,000 entries with further data from his own research. Details supplied by the settlers, the magistrates, and by Dr. Fitzgerald now provide a rich source of information on the early inhabitants of Ontario. Some entries show, for example, relationships, deaths, military service, maiden names of married women, and remarriage of widows.

The author of Loyalist Lists, published in 1984 by the Ontario Genealogical Society, Dr. Fitzgerald points out that these important rolls are undoubtedly the initial source of the Old United Empire Loyalists List, and while both books appear to have a common core, it is not surprising that they complement each other.

An enchanting story

'Over The Wall' is an enchanting story from an Ireland that sadly no longer exists. I found myself pulled into the world of Finnula and Lilly, truly moved by their friendship. Finnula's mother Mary is also an engaging character; a woman who finds herself loving two men, longing to leave her baggage behind and be young and carefree again.

I was going to say that Trisha Fitzgerald-Petri is Maeve Binchy with an edge but that would be unfair, because she has a style all of her own. She is the kind of writer who manages to create characters that are so alive, you feel you know them in person. I was sorry when the novel ended and look forward to more books of this kind

A wonderful book for those who grew up with The Great Brain

After my husband finished reading the Great Brain books to my stepson, I decided to find out more about John D. Fitzgerald, and to my surprise, I found that he had published this memoir that was aimed at adults (actually the Great Brain books weren't really intended for kids specifically). This books includes a lot of details of his growing up that are left out of the Great Brain books - like the fact that he has a sister, and the fact that Mamma is a Mormon, and that they let their kids decide which faith to follow. Sweyn, John, and their sister become Catholics, but Tom, became a Mormon. It includes the courtship between Papa and Mamma, and it takes you through until their old age. I highly recommend reading this book - it's got lots of laughs, joy, and even tears.

"A Parliament of Minds: Philosophy for a New Millenium," provides a wonderfully speculative endeavor into the universality, of the timeless tradition of philosophy. Conducted in the medium of informal interviews, twenty-three of the world's most notorious contemporary thinkers, identify there own interpretations of philosophy and it's role as humankind concludes yet another millenium. For too long, the average conception of philosophy that has passed through the streets, is that of a detached, lofty and abstract discipline that can not breathe outside of the "ivory towers" that it has confined itself to. In other words, philosophy has gone for too long without a human face. Having said that, it is apparent that such a long over-do journey too "demystify" and "humanize" philosophy is an uphill climb, however, how better to facilitate such a transition then by capturing the philosophies of a diverse range of today's leading philosophers and social thinkers? A wide variety of approaches are documented in "A Parliament..," including political philosophy, classical and ancient philosophy, feminist philosophy, Eastern, African and Islamic philosophies, environmental philosophy, aesthetics and much more, all being analyzed in a uniquley applied manner. Aside from the books easy accesibility to the philosophical novice, it likewise can provide a stimulating read for the philosophical or socially aware academic, in that it probes the depths of philosophy's duty in a seemingly collapsing world and inspires us to turn the scope of philosophy away from hair-splitting problems relevant only to itself and back in the direction of humanity, which is after all it's origins. I highly recommend this book to anyone out there in the information age, who still cares about how they should live their life.

There's not another pirate book out there like this! The illustrations are all absolutely gorgeous photographs. My seven year old son will lie on the floor for hours just staring at the pictures and reading the story over and over. His dad doesn't mind having to read it to him every night because he likes it too! I have to say that part of the reason I'm excited about this book is that it is the first book that my son has wanted to read on his own. AND it is part of the Accelerated Reader program that his school participates in so he gets points at school for reading it and all the other books in the series, too. I've reccommended the entire series to his teacher and the school librarian.

Highly recommended even for seasoned IP litigators; although this is a casebook, it has very thoughtful notes reminiscent of Hart & Wechsler's Fed. Courts casebook.

This book is fun to read -- it's more like an interactive experience for your child.

The sparkling decals are fun to put on to the dancers and then fun to peel off again -- remember colorforms?

And you'll learn about dancers and cultures from around the world.. a good way for your child to learn that we're all different, but all still the same.

One Picasso Exhibition Too Many? NOT!!!
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-04
While some art buffs may find it hard to believe that anything new could be said about the unquestionably great and unquestionably over-publicized Pablo Picasso, this Museum of Modern Art catalogue actually manages to re-invigorate the discussion of an artist whom some might say the MOMA (having held four colossal exhibitions on Picasso within 15 years) should stop shoving down the public's throat. While the paintings are, for the most part, quite familiar to Picasso enthusiasts (with some delicious exceptions), the catalogue contains several excellent essays which approach the works of art from a personal, rather than art-historical perspective. Picasso's relationships with his various women, and the effect each wife/mistress had on his vision of reality, are thoughtfully and, for the most part, intelligently explored, despite some occasional descents into blatant "National Enquirer"-type celebrity gossip on the part of these supposedly "scientific" critics. Fortunately, Picasso's art stands above the possibly-too intimate concerns of the authors (a careful perusal of the gossip-filled footnotes will amuse you for hours). Page after page of excellent reproductions stun, startle, amuse and amaze the beholder through their sheer perversity. Nearly 30 years after Picasso's death, his art still shocks and challenges the public. My personal favorites are the paintings of the sad and sensual Dora Maar, which are unmatched anywhere in Picasso's oeuvre for sheer, brutal power. Their distortions haunt the mind, although the joyous and often semi-pornographic pictures of the teenage mistress, Marie-Therese, possess an equal charge. This book is a definite must in any art library.
