Review Date: 2003-09-04
In 1979, after a wide-ranging two-year investigation, the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that President John F. Kennedy's assassination was most likely the result of a conspiracy, and that the Mafia had the motive, means and opportunity to execute JFK. Identified as the probable conspirators were Jimmy Hoffa, Santos Trafficante, Jr., and Carlos Marcello. But until 1993, there could be no corroboration by a living witness of the Committee's supposition.
In early January of 1992, Frank Ragano, attorney for Hoffa and Trafficante and friend to Marcello, decided to break his twenty-nine-year silence. John H. Davis (the author), here reveals the riveting story behind Ragano's allegation. Included is new informatiion from key witnesses and shocking details surrounding the cover-up. This 1993 book blows the lid off the most fascinating murder case in U.S. history!

For my senior project paper I chose to do the pictures and film of the kennedy assassination. This book helped a lot, and best of all it was not a boring to read. Read this book if you want to know more about the assassintion, or doing a project. Very good. The book by the way has much more information that this on the subject.

Very Good, but ULTIMATE SACRIFICE the best book ever

While I thought this book was worthwhile in many respects (I am mentioned on several pages, as well), ULTIMATE SACRIFICE is simply the best book ever on the JFK assassination. Still, very much worth your time. That said, Livingstone's crowning achievements are his "High Treason 2" and "The Radical Right..."

A Dramatic Interp. Peice to Envy

I saw this done as a peice for Forensics (speech and debate) tournaments. The young lady who performed it truly became Zelda Fitzgerald. The second I got home I was researching everything I could find on the peice and Zelda herself. Although I have yet to read it in its entirity, I have seen enough to draw me in and intrigued forever. Someday, I hope to perform this as well. If you enjoy "Last Flapper" you might want to try "Will there ever be a morning" by Francis Farmer. Happy reading!

A play worth reading

I really enjoyed reading this play. After reading "The Last Flapper" I not only felt I knew Zelda but I also had a deeper understanding of what some of F. Scoot Fietzgarlds books where truly about I don't think this play would be the best choice for a highschool production, because of it's advanced level and the lack of characters but it can be cut to be a very good Forensics (competitive speech) Piece

If you've read Rose Kennedy's autobiography you'll definately want to read this too for another look. This is written by a former secretary of Rose's starting around 1974 (just after her autobiography was written). It's both interesting and comical.

For instance I was shocked to read the state of their Palm Beach Florida house had fallen into - it sounds like a disaster as no one seemed to have the responsiblity to maintain it (shredded curtains, everything old and dirty etc) but this is not how one thinks the Kennedy's live particularly Rose. And with only one overworked cook/maid/allaround at each home (Maine & Florida) but all the Kennedy children visiting and making demands just as if there was still the staff that there probably had been when they were growing up.

Also I was surprised at some of the Kennedy children & families behavior. For instance the author mentions when she introduced herself to Sargent Shriver (Eunice Kennedy's husband and father to Maria Shriver) as Rose's new secretary, he replied to her, laadeedaa, rather unpleasantly.

It's quick and easy reading and seems want to present things in a fair manner. It's very entertaining and one sees that even with all that money and power it doesn't mean that your life will be well ordered and just how you like it, like you think it would be if you had it all.

I wish that they still printed this book

Light On The Indian World: The Essential Writings Of Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa) is a collection of the writings of Charles Eastman, who was born in 1858 and raised in the traditional nomadic life of the Sioux Native Americans prior to the era of reservations. Critical selections from "The Soul of the Indian," "The Indian Today," "Indian Boyhood," and "From the Deep Woods to Civilization" bring out key insights in Charles Eastman's work that transcend time and generations. Light On The Indian World is a fascinating, engaging, informative and memorable addition to personal, academic, and community library Native American Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

From traditionally raised prereservation Native to physician

I have read quite a few books on traditional native practices from all over the world (not all of those which claim to teach or describe such practices are accurate, quite a few are misguided or outright frauds). I had come across the name Charles Eastman in bibliographies and indices of those works that featured Native North American practices, and thought he was an anthropologist (white) who had done some of the earlier studies, given that many of the works had a publication date in the early 1900s. "Light on the Indian World" corrected that misperception. Charles Eastman was a member of the Santee Sioux, born and raised to the age of 15 in the traditional tribal manner, in a tribe that had not yet been forced onto a reservation.

At the request of his father, he joined his father on a reservation, attended school and learned English, then was able to attend college and university, eventually becoming a medical doctor, probably the first Native American to become one. He then returned to his people and worked as a reservation physician, and later lobbyist for native issues in Congress.

What a wonderful gift he has given us! A double digit number of books by his own hand, plus others such as "Light on the Indian World" which are excellent compilations or commentaries of his works. He allows us to see inside the world of the pre-reservation Native Americans, and truly appreciate their world view, such as their relationship with what we might call `the unseen world'. A heart-felt appreciation of the Earth and Nature is exactly what contemporary industrialized nations need, to slow-down the rampant abuse of the Earth's natural resources, which are currently being used up at a rate far exceeding the capacity of the Earth to replace them. Such abuse can only lead to the destruction of those societies founded on the consumption of such resources, and requiring their continued consumption in order to survive. All of the works of Charles Eastman help us see the world around us in a new light, and hopefully change our actions enough to prevent the coming environmental devastation.

Make no mistake, this is a tremendous teaching resource. As a busy teacher I have little time to prepare such material. There are numerous exercises to be found in this teaching packet, all of which are relevant to a higher understanding of the novel. Kristen Bowers should be commended for her work at Secondary Sources. I forsee great things for the company.

This guide is really helpful. The Great Gatsby is such a tough book to teach and I have struggled to teach the novel without good materials. I have made up quizzes and tests for the novel that don't come anywhere close to these. Plus, the vocabulary reinforcement with worksheets throughout that give the students extra practice with test-taking skills is great! I cannot wait to start the year anew.

It took a millennium for the Rubaiyat to be unveiled

Omar Khayyam was a multifaceted man who lived at around the time the second millennium of the Christian era was beginning. He was not only a scientist but also a Sufi mystic, and his Rubaiyat (book of verses in quatrains) has evoked much interest and endless debate. The best known English translation is that of Edward FitzGerald. Here is a sample verse:

"Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough / A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse---and Thou / Beside me singing in the Wilderness --- /

And Wilderness is Paradise enow."/

Whose imagination can fail to be stirred? But most people see this as a glorification of wine, women and song -- a handbook of hedonism. Could such an earthy and earthly book be in keeping with Khayyam's reputation as a Sufi mystic and a saint? Now towards the end of the millennium, the Indian saint, mystic and spiritual leader Paramahansa Yogananda has commented on the Rubaiyat in his book "Wine of the Mystic." Omar was indeed a mystic. The divine intoxication of the love and joy of God could only be conveyed to the people of his age through metaphors and allegory that described the pleasures they could understand. One must read the Rubaiyat in conjunction with "Wine of the Mystic" to really get to the heart and soul of one of the world's classic books.

The Long Way to a New Land and The Long Way Westward are companion books that chronicle a family's journey from their Swedish farm, which is suffering from an extended drought, to a new home in Minnesota. The books describe the difficulty and dangers of the journey in a way that is non-complaining and full of optimism for a new life in America. Teachers, these books are wonderful for integrating with other subjects and topics, such as immigration, westward expansion, steamships, trains, geography, and American life in the 1860s.
