Thirty years after reading Erico Verissimo for the first time, his writing still awakens a consciousness in me that only good, universal writing can do.

Consider this as a book for life!

E. Verissimo talks in "Consider the lilies of the field" about a man that wants to get rid of the poverty of his infancy by leaving everything and everyone behind as he scales the ladder of power and fame as an important doctor. However, the past hits him back when the woman he loved in the past dies, leaving him with their child and many doubts about her, and what they once felt for one another. And this is just the beginning of his misadventures in the South of Brazil before WWII. Consider this a book for life - it talks straight to your heart from page one till the end. You really must be made of stone to dislike it!

I recommend this book for its full coverage on all the aspects of construction management, approaching the real field problems, solutions, tips and the very well explained example that is built chapter by chapter.

Theory and practice merge in a very palatable way. Any one who read it carefully, may become a consultant on Construction Management.

Finally, a comprehensive guidebook to the corals of Hawai'i. This book provides a fantastic resource for everyone from coral taxonomists to marine biology students to tourists. It provides excellent background material in the first few sections, a user-friendly Coral Directory, species photos and descriptions, and 15 pages of taxonomic notes. Together these features provide a great educational tool and clear, informative reading for everyone regardless of expertise level. No longer does the student of Hawaiian corals need to pick through obscure scientific reports and invertebrate tomes to cobble together information. Plus the research reflected in the taxonomic notes appears to contribute important advances in classification of corals in Hawai'i. Of equal importance, the text and photos are entertaining. Very nicely done.

This is a great book !

What a pleasure it is to see this book. This must be THE definitive guide to the corals of Hawai'i. Clearly laid out, with lucid descriptions of the corals that are as valuable scientifically to the expert coral taxonomist as they are accessible to the novice enthusiast, this book is set to become the handbook that all divers and snorkellers in Hawai'ian waters will want to carry with them. Hawai'i is special : it is "far enough north and east to only have about sixty-six species of hard corals, compared to over five hundred in the Philippines, Indonesia and New Guinea", so the book is laid out to help divers learn the most commonly seen corals first. Learn the five corals you are most likely to meet and the rest becomes easier. The Coral Directory sets out the dominant and common species so that divers can get to grips with those first, progressing to the uncommon and rare. The photographs are clear and page references in the Coral Directory lead you straight to the detailed information about that coral in the body of the book. It just couldn't be easier!

This book is a reflection of the enthusiasm that Dr Fenner has for his subject and his talent as a teacher to convey that enthusiasm to his students.

I read all six books in the series in six nights! I couldn't put them down! Months later, I read them again. There are so many insightful messages in them, I didn't want to forget anything! I love this book and have purchased it as a gift for many of my friends! This book and all the books in Gates' series are a fabulous collection of loving messages from spirit. They contain timeless reminders of why we're here on this earth and how we can fill our lives with genuine love, courage, hope and wisdom. With clarity and honesty, Gates discusses everything from how to love and be loved to the life of the soul. Quick to read but deep in meaning.

Gates' books provide the reader with the basic blueprint on how to approach and react to what life hands them on a daily basis. The books are the contemporary Tao, covering a wide range of thought-provoking topics. This constellation of books does not provide easy or final answers. Rather, in reading them you will bring down the spiritual light-and find your own answers within.

We purchased this book after move to North Carolina, and it has come in so handy. We have been able to go to a couple of the places we found in the book, but have not had as much time as we have hoped to really use it. My husband has gone through it cover to cover and marked so many places we plan on visiting. Whether you live in the area, or just plan a short visit, I think this book is a great source.

incredible art locator for western NC

This is such a great find. It is an extensive listing of artists/studios/gallery's in western NC. We are avid art seekers and always use this guide whenever we head to this area and constantly recommend it to friends. I owned the first editions as well.

On one trip we followed the detailed instructions, taking us deep into the mountains way off the main road, and located a small shack full of beautiful pottery. The door was open, no one around (the artist's home was up the hill a little ways) and there was a note indicating if we wanted to purchase something to please fill out a sales ticket, add the appropiate tax, and stick it and your money in the cookie jar! It was art on the Honor system, it was so wonderful.

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in all kinds of art - from large gallery/gift stores to small shacks deep in the woods.

Overall I am impressed with the content in the field guide. It has alot of info that others don't have. My only complaint about it is the layout. Sometimes it can be difficult to find things, unless you know right where they are. Tabs on the pages would help this. Otherwise it is a great reference.

As a documentary filmmaker this text was really helpful to me when working with my sources and talents. It was suggested to me by a friend when critiquing my new work. After reading it I was able to place myself in an increasingly thoughtful and thorough position when working with my interviewees. I would suggest every visual artist interested in exploring ethnicity or identity through appropriations should check out the ethics section!

An excellent resource for the budding ethnographer

D. Soyini Madison's "Critical Ethnography: Method, Ethics, and Performance" is a rich and accessible resource for scholars and students engaged in ethnographic fieldwork. It provides a concise primer in the theoretical, methodological, ethical, and performative dimensions of field research, and maintains a very pragmatic, "how-to" approach that might be especially valuable to younger scholars or those doing ethnographic work for the first time. The goals of the book are explicitly pedagogical, and to this end Madison organizes it around three fictional case studies which she relates to the tripartite divisions of method/theory, ethics, and performance that structure the work. Madison's recapitulations of important theories in anthropology, gender studies, performance studies, postcolonial studies and related fields are particularly deft and approachable for those of us who sometimes need a little help keeping our "dasein" straight from our interpellation, our Merleau-Ponty from our Heidegger. Throughout the book, Madison seems particularly indebted to the work of the late Dwight Conquergood, whose ideas on the intersections of performance, ethnography, and ethics are quite prominent and inform many of her positions. All in all, the book is a treasure trove of sound, practical advice from a seasoned ethnographer on topics ranging from how to deal with writer's block, to how to conduct an interview, to how to think about ethical obligations to your informants, as well as many other concerns that often arise in the context of doing and writing about fieldwork.

Classic George!

Review Date: 2008-01-22
I think we'll have to buy some more copies of this story, my son makes us read it at least 4 - 5 times a week to him. He loves firefighters (and George of course) so this is a perfect fit.

I've noticed some of the newer stories "inspired" by Margaret and H.A. Rey -- this is one of their originals / classics. Timeless and precious are words that come to mind when thinking about the actual story.

So many opportunities to learn / teach within the classic George stories -- I think because some of the pictures, things, stuff in the story are vintage and unfamiliar it encourages the child to inquire more.

We're huge fans -- and if you watch the specials, sometimes they have 4 for price of 3 on [...]

Of course, you should try to support your local bookstore whenever you can!

DARKNESS CALLS

Review Date: 2003-12-09
This debut novel by T. M. MacGregor is a stunning and compelling thriller. Her interweaving of the third person and first person (the killer's) narrative works extremely well and although the identity of the murderer plays on your mind at times, the final resolution is nonetheless shocking.
Quin St. James and Mike McCleary are good heroes, and their intense and complex backgrounds are very appealing. MacGregor also peoples her book with other interesting characters, including the victim Grant, Mike's squeeze Robin, and the sleezy Paul. The plot moves along well, and the suspense never lets up. A great book; am eager to locate others in this series, as I am not particularly fond of her latest "Dean Koontz" ripoffs.

This book was the very first ever murder mystery I read. After 20 years of romances I happened on this one by accident. Not being a "blood and guts" or "looking over my shoulder" type of gal, I was amazed at the fact that I couldn't put it down. The way the characters were sketched out grabbed you from the beginning. When you finished the last page, you wanted to find the next book in the series immediately. You didn't want to let Quin and Mike go. This is a definite recommendation for those who love a good murder mystery. Haven't picked up a romance since - T.J. definitely got me hooked!
