One of the greatest Waterfowling Books

I really enjoyed this book. It is spoken as if Worth was relating his stories to a friend. I will be getting a sneakboat this fall and was made even more anxious by reading the accounts of brant and wigeon landing right on top of these crafts! David Hagerbaumer's artwork is a great addition to this book. His sketches are amazing! If you liked this book, try to find a copy of Hagerbaumer's Waterfowling These Past Fifty Years, Especially Brant. It is a great book based in the same area.

A nice blend of interesting stories and hunting information.

When I ordered this book I was looking for some reading about Canvasback ducks. If that is your interest in this book you will be fooled as I was. There is relatively little specific material about the species. However, Mr Mathewson has done a nice job of informing the reader about hunting waterfowl on the northwest coast. He talks of the various birds as well as the tools used to pursue them in that region. His ability to inform the reader at the same he reports a story from his past is enjoyable to say the least. The pencil sketches of Mr. Hagerbaumer add to these stories. For me, I was sad when I finished the book, which is an indication of my appreciation of it.

Dave told me four years ago he was going to write a book. He was kind enough to share thirty years of acquired knowledge and history with me. I figured it was going to be just another book about some off the walk theories on how to train a bird dog like the other books that I had read on the same subject. Little did I know. Dave's book is a nuts and bolts yet simple approach system on training your bird dog from a pup to a finished dog. It is money well spent.

This book is a MUST READ for those new to the sport or those like myself that have been involved for almost thirty years. This is a No Nonsense "How To" guide that leaves no Stone Unturned. Dave gives the new and experienced trainer all the tools and places to acquire everything from training aids to veterinarian tips. I finally found a source to get my dogs "Snake-Bite Proofed"! Keep the book Close By, Dave has done all the Research Work and it's all right at the back of the book for fast reference!
I thought I knew just about everything there was to know about training and field trialing until I read Dave's book... What an eye opener! Lucky for me, I got the book in time to apply Dave's methods to my now six month old Brittany. And Don't fret, Dave addresses the training of all Bird Dogs, not just Brittany's. And most important, he teaches the Trainer how to be a Trainer in clear simple language. If you don't have this book, Get It! Best Investment for any Dog owner!!! Thanks Dave!!

Very good followup to Rick Bragg's amazing life stories. I, too, am from the South and felt as if we knew each other because of the similarities.
I would recommend that all three of his books be purchased, read, and then re-read over & over. You will never forget this Southern boy's story!

The book is fabulous! We live in Asheville and love watching the birds in our yard. Until we started looking them up in this little guide (which my sweet husband gave me!), we had no idea that there were SO many distinguishable bird varieties right here, it's amazing what you find out when you really start paying attention to beauty in color, form and behavior. The book is easy to navigate in, i.e. fidn what you're looking for, it's beautiful and straight to the poing. Wonder-full!

I would recommend this book to anyone living in the Carolinas with an interest in learning the various types of birds we have in and around our backyards. I am a beginning birdwatcher and have been trying to use 3 different bird guides prior to buying this book. Stan Tekiela has pulled together a great, comprehensive guide with most of the birds you will find visiting your bird feeder. He provides plenty of detail in the descriptions and the real life pictures of the birds are dead on. There are also pictures of both bird sexes to help identify the species in greater detail. Since purchasing the book, I have been able to accurately identify 20 different species and will add more to that list in the future! If you are getting into birds, then this book is for you. It is nice and small enought to toss in your pocket with some field binoculars for an afternoon of free entertainment. Amazon also has a great price for this book! I am buying additional copies for other family members. Can't go wrong with this selection!!!

Invaluable reference

For the beginning or backyard birdwatcher, this is the best book I have found. First, it limits the birds to your area, thereby ruling out a lot of birds you wouldn't be seeing anyway. Second, it shows both male and female photos if the bird is dimorphic. This makes identifying much easier. Large photos, "Stan's Notes" and organization by bird color make this book easy to use and informative.

Great book for beginner

This is a great book for the beginning PA bird watcher. Ideal for someone with a bird feeder who wants to know who's visiting.

The book is organized by bird colors which makes identification much easier. Other books require you to know what the bird is in order to find it.

Each description includes useful behavior and habitat info that more advanced birders might find interesting too. All images are good quality photographs. It's small enough to carry in a pocket. Don't hesitate, it's well worth the money.

I can finally pick out which birds are singing which songs. We listen to it on the road and my son reads along in the field guide. For years I have wanted to be able to identify which song belongs to which bird, but I had a lot of difficulty with this as I am not a auditory learner. Stan clearly introduces the bird and gives a solid description of the type of song and when/where you are likely to hear it. I feel almost like I've been blessed with learning a foreign language. Absolutely wonderful!

No need to give great detail: this is simply a marvelous book. It will enlighten you to human behavior, and you will see the world with new eyes after you digest Desmond Morris's observations. Fabulous photographic illus trations. One of the best things about the book is that you can pick it up on any page and dabble in it. It might be called "a bible" of human behavior.

You'll never look at yourself the same way again

Morris's trick here (as he states in the book) is to get us to look at the human body differently by having us see not the whole, but the parts. And Morris then proceeds to break down each and every part of the human body in depth. Ranging from the obvious (like hands) to the not so obvious (the beard), Morris uses profuse diagrams and photographs to illustrate how special and unique the details of each and every human being really is. Bodywatching is a wealth of knowledge about ourselves. If you are familiar with Morris's other writings, especially Manwatching, you might think that this book is just regurgitating old information, but that is far from the case. While Morris was concentrated on the masses of humans in books like Manwatching and The Naked Ape, in Bodywatching Morris is concerned with the individual alone. It is the difference between watching traffic at rush hour and watching the mechanic work on your car. This book will not fail to astonish even the most introspective person. This is truly a guide of self discovery which Morris has presented us with in Bodywatching.

A must read for all cooks and health care workers!!! I couldn't put it down. (It had something sticky on the cover.) I can't wait for the movie. Definitely Affine read.

Most Boundaries Are Self-Imposed
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-24
The title is a misnomer: Although the authors do indeed suggest how to "break through the chains of organizational structure", they provide an enlightening explanation of four different types of boundaries (vertical, horizontal, external, and geographic) which give definition to any organization. They do not advocate the total elimination of these boundaries (which is impossible, anyway); rather, they suggest how to rearrange them so that an organization can thrive. For the authors, there is what they call "A New World Order":

"In living organisms, membranes exist to give the organization shape and definition. They have sufficient structural strength to prevent the organism from dissolving into an amorphous mess....Like a living organism, the boundaryless organization also evolves and grows, and the placement of boundaries may shift....Because the boundaryless organization is a living continuum, not a fixed state, the ongoing management challenge is to find the right balance of boundaryless behavior, to determine how permeable to make boundaries, and where to place them."

This brief excerpt from the first chapter correctly suggests the purpose of this remarkable book: To explain HOW to meet that challenge. The material is presented within four parts plus a conclusion. The first explains how to achieve "free movement up and down" by crossing vertical boundaries; the second explains how to achieve "free movement side to side" by crossing horizontal boundaries; the third explains how to achieve "free movement along the value chain" by crossing external boundaries; and in the fourth part, they explain how to achieve "free global movement" by crossing geographic boundaries." Then in the Conclusion, the authors discuss "Making It Happen: Leading Toward the Boundaryless Organization." The authors also include a series of six questionnaires. By completing each in sequence, the reader is able to determine (a) where her or his organization is now located relative to "the boundaryless paradigm", and (b), what is needed to eliminate the "gap" between where it is now and where it should be.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read The Boundaryless Organization Field Guide. It contains a wealth of hands-on set of diagnostic instruments, exercises, and tools as well as a disk with presentation slides in Powerpoint format.
