This is an invaluable tool for the serious grower. Any experienced gardner will be able to use the information in this book to fabulous advantage. Although highly technical, (the authors go to great lengths to substantiate all the material presented in a scientific manner)the book is formatted in such a way that it can be used by anyone to diagnose and treat pest/disease problems event by event, rather like an encyclopdia. It is thorough and formatted logically and concisely. This is an excellant troubleshooting tool which works exceptionally well with pest and disease encyclopedias in the gardener's library.

This is a monumental effort, 220 page plus book well laid out and researched with heaps of references and an easy to follow index of pests and diseases plus biological solutions as the title indicates. Members may recall that John McPartland in fact all the authors were very helpful to NZHIAI some time back regarding MAF's (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries) request for information regarding industrial hemp pests and diseases. By NZ standards this book is quite pricey (NZD 150-00 plus landed) That said I would suggest if you are re serious regarding growing industrial hemp this book will become as it is rapidly for me "Your bible." There is so much information my head is spinning. It is attractively bound and could well become a collectors item. No problems with NZ customs. In a word it is BRILLIANT. A credit to the authors. It can be obtained from the website below. Only took a week to get here.

Having only been able to get an overview of this imposing tome, I came away thorougly impressed. for by far the most comprehensive book on the subject, this book should become indispensable. in a field dominated by the likes of ed rosenthal and jorge cervantes, it's nice to see a work that's more academic than either e.r. or j.c. are inclined to churn out (not that they don't provide a great service to the public as well!) if you've got the time, and are serious about cultivation, this work will resolve a lot of nagging questions and issues you might have in a professional, well-organized fashion.

Although HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is not intended as a "grow book" that focuses on lighting, security, and clandestine techniques, its scope, accuracy and detail make it an incomparable textbook that every marijuana grower should have. It is interesting and entertaining, immaculately presented and organized, and features the most innovative and reliable techniques for keeping your plants healthy and happy.

HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a large, 251 page, professional book with a professional price. It's well worth it. When I grew my own marijuana, I was often puzzled by plant problems. If I'd had this book, I could have easily eliminated those problems. HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS will likely increase the yield of your garden by at least 50%- if that's not worth, I don't know what is!

I read this and I'll buy it for my collection. It is certainly worth it.

Tales should be this way. Too much in the mass media that is sugary and has all the rough edges filed off. This is the toy electronics set with a real soldering iron. This is the "Concrete Teddy Bear". It has the hard, dark edge needed especially for a drama that for all the trappings involves 'growing up'. I really like some parts of it, the comment on 'regular' schools as things that destroy by boredom thought and innovation, something that has become far more prevalent in recent years with a combination of a quest for grade based funding and an overbearing abuse of authority that is just as destructive to many more students in RL than this fictional school is to the weekly unlucky one.

The artwork is wonderful, the story great. I like the 'rag doll' theme to the school admin characters, especially the maids.


There's only one drawback, I'm a bit skeptical of the theme, the kid with lowest grades getting literally eliminated. Most rich elite, smart innovators or simply pigs that devoured usury, spoil their kids to death and then are surprised when they really turn awful when they finally mete out the mildest 'discipline' involving not buying a Porsche after they casually wrecked their last one. A world with a strong underground network of "Mad Scientists" would certainly have parents willing to send their kids to a harsh school (keeps them from touching the 'doomsday bomb') to learn stuff the public schools ruin (such as how to actually think) but not a deadly school, or again they'd just let the free public schools take care of things. But, it's a wild enough fantasy, it's a small thing and despite being a fantasy has a real low "Suspension of Disbelief" since the story is Oz like and about personal growth.

Little Lucy Snow inadvertently ends up at a boarding school for the children of evil geniuses and mad scientists... awesome! A perfect mashup of Harry Potter-esque magical boarding school life, with A Series of Unfortunate Events-style dark humored gothik fantasy, told in captivating manga style. Lucy is everything you'd want in an spunky manga heroine, but the dark humor offsets the expected tropes nicely, creating a hybrid work that perfectly captures some of my favorite aspects of East and West comic and fantasy traditions. The story and images are refreshingly appropriate for younger teens, despite some dark themes. The art is consistently lovely throughout, and shows comfort and mastery of the manga style. Some concept art at the end of the first volume shows a Hollow Fields that could have been, demonstrating that the author also has equal facility with western styles, and is certainly a creative force to keep an eye on! My only complaint is that there's not more yet, however the imminent release of volume two promises to correct that deficiency. Highly recommended.

Upon reading that Madeleine Rosca came 3rd in the International Manga Awards, I felt great pride as an Aussie and bought the book to show her my support. The book is really cute with all the ongoings, and it turns out its now my mother's favorite. She's not a native english speaker, but since this book aims for a younger audience she managed to get into it more. (except for the scientific jargon that was just way way way out of her league, but hey give and take)

I really liked this book and am glad to see some Aussies seeing the light of day in the Manga World. Looking forward to Maddy's new volume, and if you ever do read this Maddy, we're proud of you. =)

I think that Hollow Fields has a good story. As soon as I saw this book at my school book fair, I knew this was going to mean something to me. I read the back. It sounded interesting. I read the first few pages, I bought the book! I read it with TOTAL interest. It turned out to be better than I had expected with the way I could see the characters moving and hear the rain fall. I was so involved in that book, that if someone disturbed me, I wasn't happy. When I first saw it, I also knew it was a whole new adventure, just waiting to be discovered. You may think I'm just saying that, just because I'm a middle school girl, but the book really grabbed my attention! When I finished reading Hollow Fields, I wanted my mom to read it too and was disappointed that the second volume wasn't ready for me to read. I hope the next volume comes out soon!!!

I can add little to the other reviews except for my enthusiastic recommendation of this book! Mank, one of the best film historians on the beat, liberally mixes careful scholarship with the zest of good storytelling. This makes for part one of a great double-feature if you follow it with Shawn Levy's dynamite RAT PACK CONFIDENTIAL. Ah, for the good old days... when bad behavior had panache! Great read! As another has noted, it's hard not to tear through in a single sitting.

Greg Mank has left the haunted mansion of golden age horror film critiques and heads into Hollywood Babylon territory with his newest book; and what he finds would have Kenneth Anger gasping for breath. Mank, with his coauthors Charles Heard and Bill Nelson, tells the tale of the Bundy Drive Boys, a collective of fast living and hard drinking Hollywood actors, writers and artists--- all committed to their friendship and the right to destroy their careers, their families and themselves by any means necessary. Among the hell-raisers are John Barrymore, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, John Decker, William Fowler, John Carradine, Ben Hecht and Sadakichi Hartmann; and their stories of childhood tragedy, incest, rape, cannibalism (in a POW camp), drunken brawls, sexual conquests, and even an art forgery scam, will have your jaw hitting the floor.

I read HOLLYWOOD HELLFIRE CLUB in one sitting. My morbid curiosity (wondering just how much worse can things get for the Bundy Drive boys) simply would not let me put this book down. If you are a fan of Hollywood's Golden Age... or the last person to leave the scene of a train wreck, this book will surely entertain and/or horrify you!

There are only two ways you can look at the lives of these legendary "bad boy" actors and comedians. First is head-on, which this book offers in abundance. And second, philosophically, as suggested by one of the most poignant passages in the book, "They all saw the joke of life, and they teach us not to be scared. There is no bogeyman. Get the essence of love and happiness and joy, and share it with people. All that matters is to leave a legacy of happiness, and to give someone else an inspiration--like they gave us." (Rita Saiz, clairvoyant?)

John Barrymore, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, and John Decker were among the most talented individuals of their day, and seemingly, among the most tragic, each drowning his pain in alcohol and prematurely snuffing-out their abilities and lives. But they did so in good company: John Carradine, Alan Mowbray, Ben Hecht, and Thomas Mitchell, to name a few. And best of all, there was Gene Fowler, the writer whom they trusted to keep the record straight. And worst of all, there was Sadakichi Hartmann, a pre-counter-culture beatnik/hippie who seemed to be consumed by his worst impulses, and was kept afloat by Barrymore.

But to concentrate on the tragic is to lose sight of the legacy that includes Barrymore's "Svengali" and "Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde," Fields's trenchant satires of American family life, and the transcendent magic of Flynn's swashbuckling heroes. Authors Mank, Heard, and Nelson offer no apologies for these artists, nor do they cast judgement. This is a book that is both repulsive and yet mesmerizing. In the end, we are left not so much mourning the shortened careers of these men, but marveling that their genius allowed them to perform a weird alchemy that transformed so much personal squalor into artistic brilliance.

This is High-Gothic Hollywood storytelling, and maybe it's about time.

I was a bit nervous when I ordered "Hollywood's Hellfire Club" by Gregory Mank, Charles Heard and Bill Nelson.

I love old Hollywood and the stars of its golden age and although I was not looking for a whitewash of their lives, I was worried it might be a book that just trashed them. And yes, the book shows their lives warts and all, but it was clearly written by people who love these guys and the period of Hollywood they lived in.

The interwoven stories of these friends has the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, but all told in an engrossing way that really wraps you up in the tale. I was familiar with W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, John Carradine, John Barrymore, Ben Hecht and Gene Fowler but I did not know much about John Decker and Sadakichi Hartmann but reading about their exploits and insanity was funny and fascinating (W.C. Fields as Queen Victoria? And who in their right mind would ever think of a perfume concert?!?)

The book is a very enjoyable read, it grabs you with each persons story and pulls the group together as it tells the tale. Organized by decades, the book is lavishly illustrated and although most of the cast of characters had a lot of sadness in their lives, the book does not get morbid, it more looks at the absurdity and fun these people brought each other, and through their work they brought each of us.

These guys personified perfection in their chosen fields, were perfectly decadent in their private lives and the way "Hollywood's Hellfire Club" is presented makes for a perfectly fascinating story.

It's information is insightful, Biblical, practical and Ken puts into the hands of his readers a do-able, day to day playbook for Dad's to win with their kids. Ken's insights, stories and truths empower and equip men to leave lasting Godly imprints in the daily lives of their children and all those whom they touch....he helps us Packer fans to realize that though it may be hard to fathom...there are indeed higher priorities in life than football and dare I say it...the Green Bay Packers

I was delighted to read this book of poetry. It strikes a cord that most poetry doesn't quite reach. Most likely, this "cord" comes from 'way back, when I was growing up on a small farm in southeastern Minnesota. I love that Leo Dangel can leave me with a lump in my throat by painting a scene or an experience with true understatment, in the style of a rural, reserved, very masculine man.

This volume of poetry brings the smells, tastes and heart of farmlife and the people we know who live it back into our lives. As a farm kid growing up in rural Michigan and now living in Minneapolis as an Art Director, I actually felt the pangs of longing grow stronger with each page I turned. The essence of farmlife and farm people is told with the subtleness of a "Farmer's nod", but has the satisfaction of ending the day by pulling home a wagonload of hay, knowing there will be a pot roast supper waiting on the table when you walk in the door.

Dangel does an excellant job of catching the nostalgia of childhood and growing up on a farm in the midwest. Even though many of his poems are from childhood experiences in the 1950's, these ideas are also extended to current day with his poem about the Wal-Mart door greeter. Fabulous book!! I would give it six stars if I could!!

This is one of the best books for kids I've seen. As a former librairian for children I've seen quite a few. bummers that don't do a good job of teaching or even interest children.

An excellent yoga book for every child-oriented family has finally been published. Children can understand it by themselves or with friends and adults.

This well illustrated book is clearly written on spacious pages. The real value of knowing yoga in today's fast-paced world is presented in specific ways. For example, positions for warming up or cooling down in sports such as gymnastics, soccer, snow/skate boarding, surfing, wrestling, etc. are presented.

Other chapters of interest are on double yoga (mirror-imaging with another), yoga games, and relaxation technics for stress-reduction in test taking, social situations, and competition and/or performance situations.

Iwould highly recommend this book for families with children.

I' am a former librarian who sees the very wonderful uses for this book with children. Very good for parents, teachers and children themselves.

Yoga for kids is a new age exercise experience that beats gym class any day. I recommend this book for parents who have young children that wish to adopt a practical and safe means of exercise.

A valuable book for those who wish to remind their children - and themselves - of the utter horrors of a brutal war. While not for very young children, it would be a great way to get one's family to think about war and its violence and, sometimes, its absolute necessity.

I read this book while resting my feet at Book Expo 2000. At least three people stopped to ask me about it because they were so taken by the illustrations. This picture book for young people intersperses breathtaking illustrations for the poem "In Flanders Field" with background on World War I and the story of the writing of this poem. A deeply affecting and touching book, it will give young people a personal view of war, particularly this war. Unfortunately, many children as well as adults know nothing about World War I. This book is a fine introduction and a good war to broach a painful topic. By any standard, it is well-well written and thoughtful.

This lovely book is a perfect introduction to Veteran's Day or Remembrance Day or World War I. The story of John McCrea and WWI flows through the book, interspersed with lines from the poem, "In Flanders fields." It discusses the significance of the date, November 11 and supplies interesting details from the period. Over two page spreads Wilson also interprets lines from the poem with lovely paintings that fill in more information about soldier life.

This book is very popular with kids who like nonfiction "war" books.

Cultural references to this poem abound. The poem is a classic that should be shared with young people today.

Growing up in Canada, I and every other child knew this poem inside and out. Every Rememberence Day[Nov.11th], we recited it, wore our poppies and then walked down to the cemetery to commemorate all the soldiers who died during the different wars. We talked about it in class for a few weeks.I gave it to my children after I found the book at a Canadian bookstore the week of it's release. They in turn took it school and their teachers read it to their classes. As a education major, I will use it in my studies and then as a teacher for my class to learn about the World Wars. The art work is beautiful and the story enclosed is lovely too, if ever can be of a book about war. It's too bad this isn't used over here in the States.

Carol Field is one of my all time favorite Italian food writers. She knows what she's talking about, always finds authentic and interesting recipes and has such respect for Italian culture and tradition. The recipes are wonderful, often simple and everything I've prepared has been absolutely delicious! I can't recommend it enough. The nonna's stories are wonderful to read as well and I'm so happy that she's captured their recipes and stories and recorded them. Her book is a treasure, just like they are. Buon appetito!

This is the second of Carol Field's books that I've read (the first one I picked up was "Celebrating Italy") and her hallmarks seem to be meticulous, yet loving, research and a writing style that manages to evoke the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and flavors of Italian cooking to a mouth-watering degree.

"In Nonna's Kitchen" is a cookbook that Field researched by going to Italy and culling time-honored, taste-tested recipes from several authentic Italian grandmothers. I have not yet tried any of the recipes, but reading them feels like good eatin'. I usually dislike cookbooks that don't feature a picture of every recipe. "In Nonna's Kitchen" contains no pictures of food, but the recipes and Field's writing on Italian cuisine and culture make pictures unnecessary.

Ah, yes, culture. It's easy to see Field not so much as a food writer, but as an eager and loving student of Italian culture. She does much honor to the Italian grandmothers who contributed to this book by providing a lengthy, colorful profile of each of them. In these profiles, the "nonne" discuss how they learned to cook, what their lives have been like, how cooking has changed over the courses of their lifetimes, etc. In addition to these formal profiles, Field includes little anecdotes about several of the grandmothers within the recipes they provided.

These are not your stereotypical black-shawled, muttering Italian grandmothers, either. They range in age from 40s-90s, and a good many of them are classically beautiful, stylish women. All of them, however, are quintessentially Italian in that they place great importance on good, simple food made from the freshest local ingredients.

I plan to buy copies of "In Nonna's Kitchen" and "Celebrating Italy" for myself; they're too good not to own. Carol Field now has the distinction of being my favorite food writer!

For lovers of Italian food in particular, but for any lover of cooking and Italy, this is a must have for your collection. Every recipe is preceded by an introduction to the Nonna (Grandmother) whose speciality it is. These Nonnas run the gamut, from sophisticated Roman and Florentine women to women from small villages, still cooking as their own Nonnas did. I've tried several of the recipes and each has been spectacular. I'm buying another copy to take as a gift for a week-long 60th birthday celebration at a villa near Sienna. Ciao!

When my mother gave me this cook book, and I saw the word 'Nonna' in the title, I got a little choked up. I also whispered to myself, "this better be good." Well...'Bravo! Ti hai fatto bene!' You have done well. Yes, the recipes are wonderful, but the mood, the stories, the history of each of these Nonnas made me smile, and made me proud. Just as in my Nonna's cooking, these ladies are the best at turning leftovers into elegance. Wonderful subtle flavors - Crostini, Polpette, the Chocolate Ameretti Pudding...all we need is a deck of cards for Scopa! I made my Nonna write down her sauce recipe for me, because if I didn't, it would have died with her, recipes are verbal traditions handed down for generations...this is cooking history. Thank you. My wife thanks you too...books like this motivate husbands to cook more often.
