I gave this book to my 3 yr old neice and 6 yr old nephew, and they were as fascinated by it as their mother and father were. The pictures are wonderful and the text really gives you the feel of what the lives of one of the last groups of hunter gatherers in the world are like. And it paints a detailed and fascinating picture of what it is like to be an anthropologist studying and loving a people whose lives are so different from our own. A really enjoyable book.

This biography of the young Venezuelan anthropologist Magdalena Hurtado provides a very clear description of her fieldwork among one of the world's last foraging peoples, the Ache indians of Paraguay. This beautifully illustated book provides the best available introduction for young readers of what it is an anthropologist does. Although the publishers recommend the book for ages 9-12, my guess is that students in junior high and high school --perhaps especially young women -- will find the book both informative and inspirational.

color correction is an art.

color correction is creative.

color correction is technical.

Perhaps THE best thing about this book is that it combines all of the above. As a working colorist this book has provided validation to techniques that I use and has taught me new techniques.

"The art of field sketching is the art of learning to observe and draw nature quickly without worrying about the result." - Clare Walker Leslie (from the preface of the book.)

I bought this book years ago, and it has never ceased to inspire and instruct. Clare's easy, accessible language and great illustrations cover all aspects of drawing from nature: equipment & tools, techniques, clear examples, simple tips and high-resolution results.

What's wonderful about this book is that the author makes sketching so accessible! There's no pretense about being "creative" or "an artist"...she gets that the process is more important than the product. Field sketching is about understanding the outdoors and observing things closely...not about creating beautiful drawings.

If you have *ever* thought to yourself "I wish I could draw" or "I would sketch if I only had the time," or if you're a professional or practiced artist that wants a good reminder of the benefits of field sketching, this book is for you.

This book will inspire you to get you out of the house, sketchbook & pencil in hand, to observe and capture the moments of nature, and in the process, you'll "learn about a world that often goes otherwise unnoticed." (from the preface.)

I checked out this title from a library when I was in my teens. It was the introduction to journaling for me. I took down the name, returned the book when it was due, and I was glad that I did: it took me this long to find a in-print copy of it...and soft cover to boot!

The Art of Scientific Writing
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-28
The newest edition of The Art of Scientific Writing is a terrific resource for scientific and other writers alike. It offers information on preparing scientific works, ie books, dissertations, journal articles and reports, in addition to providing writing techniques, offering layout and design suggestions. The authors thoroughly cover several topics to help readers develop a sense of scientific writing, including figures and tables to clarify text selections. The chapters are divided by subcategory, which makes it easy to navigate through the book to find a topic. Because there are significant new scientific developments almost daily, a chapter on collecting and citing literature is included. The authors make suggestions throughout the book, such as how to build one's own literature collection, why abstracts are pertinent to articles and dissertations, and how to correctly space formulas within a document. Chapters included are Reports, Dissertations, Journal Articles, Books, Writing Techniques, Formulas, Figures, Tables and Collecting and Citing the Literature. Appendices offer further information on Reference Formats, Selected Quantities, Units and Constants, The 20 Commandments of Electronic Manuscripts, and Conversion Tips. The Art of Scientific Writing has a complete index listing every topic in the book, which assists in finding a topic quickly. By HF Ebel, C Bliefert, WE Russey.

I got this book as a recommendation for my cell bio class in undergraduate. It has really helped me in writing successful lab reports and scientific papers on journal articles. I would highly suggest this for any science major - especially if you are interested in doing research or attending graduate school.

Spinning with Pleasure!

I first began thinking about purchasing a spinning wheel 5 years ago but was'nt sure about what I wanted and I certainly knew nothing about spinning wheels in general but this book changed all of that.

"The Ashford Book of Spinning" provides excellent, easy to understand, basic information from sheep to yarn. With all of this at your finger tips in one good reference book you can't go wrong. Another nice thing about the book is that it won't make you feel like the only spinning wheel to buy would be an Ashford model.

This has been an invaluable reference for me and I keep the book close by when I start to spin, now two wheels later.

I read all six books in the series in six nights! I couldn't put them down! Months later, I read them again. There are so many insightful messages in them, I didn't want to forget anything! I love this book and have purchased it as a gift for many of my friends! This book and all the books in Gates' series are a fabulous collection of loving messages from spirit. They contain timeless reminders of why we're here on this earth and how we can fill our lives with genuine love, courage, hope and wisdom. With clarity and honesty, Gates discusses everything from how to love and be loved to the life of the soul. Quick to read but deep in meaning.

Gates' books provide the reader with the basic blueprint on how to approach and react to what life hands them on a daily basis. The books are the contemporary Tao, covering a wide range of thought-provoking topics. This constellation of books does not provide easy or final answers. Rather, in reading them you will bring down the spiritual light-and find your own answers within.

I have enjoyed all of Pamela Camille's previous books, and this is no exception. An excellent read.

This was my teenaged daughter's book, and she loved it, so I read it. Pepper, the heroine, kicks butt from a wheelchair after becoming a Wisdom Retriever. Great mythology and fantasy read! Enlightened Beings have slept the Sleep of Bliss in the Sun Quartz Fields, but for thousands of years, it has been foretold that the Clans of Light would awaken them. Six young men and women from the ancient Clans of Light unite to learn the ancient wisdom necessary to awaken the Sun Quartz Fields and usher in an era of perfect peace and harmony on Earth. They have to battle the Greed Kings, who are evil and nasty. They buried an Egyptian priestess alive, six thousand years ago, and tortured the primary Wisdom Retriever. Koba, the underwater world, and enlightened beings from a distant galaxy help the Clans of Light. A great, feel-good fantasy!

This is worth reading even if just for "Customs of the Country," a work of tremendous sadness, sensitivity, and restraint, one of the great American stories of the last 25 years.

Great stories...interesting, well-defined characters.

This is a collection of short stories by a great writer. My favorites were "Petit Cachou" about hustlers and marginal types on the French Riviera and "Move on Up" about relationships among street people in New York. Absolutely first class
