A recent resident of Venice, California, I looked out to the Santa Monica mountains from my second story window and wondered where the running trails were. I've bounced around LA over the past few years, running in Griffith Park, Fryman Canyon, Porter Ranch, among other routes, but these new mountains drew me to them.

How to find my way? I ran one morning at Will Rogers Park and asked someone about the trails that lured me away from the traffic and the people. The runner said: "Get Stan Swartz' book!" Thus armed, I searched a book store and found it quickly. It was exactly what I was searching for, similar in style to the wonderful book I had purchased years earlier which depicted all the trail running possibilities within New York City.

Now, eight weeks after placing third in my ritualistic 10K at Descanso Gardens, I leaf through the book almost every morning, wondering which route I will take on the weekend, building up my confidence with each page turn. What I find fascinating is that the descriptions of the routes, the distances, and benchmarks, the terrain, ALL MATCH THE REALITY. I know I am on the right trail; I know when I am half way through; I know when to turn left or right; the topographical maps give me an idea of the ups and downs. Now that I have completed several of the runs alone among this spectacular landscape, I inhale the spiritual aspect of running imbued by George Sheehan and combine it with the practical information provided by this book.

I look forward to trying out as many of the runs as I can, venturing out even to the longest ones at 13 miles. When I can, I will join the other runners on Sunday mornings. The three authors have given me a great gift: the ability to explore historical terrain with the eyes of a contemporary "critter"...a trail runner who feels at one with the wondrous varieties of Nature described so completely by those who have gone before me. Thank you.

Get off of that asphalt!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-02
This is a great guide to trail running in general and to the trails of Washington. It will appeal to the hardened veteran, the novice, or even the armchair runner. Walkers and hikers will also find it a good resource. General trail running information, equipment, cautions and rewards are discussed in the front section of the book. The trails are regionalized for quick access. Through use of maps, elevation charts, photos, and difficulty ratings it is easy to tell at a glance which trail fits your time frame and energy level on any given day. Rather than a bland description, a bit of history, geology and humor is included to make each trail more personal and enticing. The photos give a great preview of the beauty of each trail. If this book doesn't help you get off of the asphalt and enjoy the beauty and spirituality of the wilderness I don't know what will.

A "Must Have" for Trail Runners

As someone who has run a number of the trails described in this book I would say it's a "must have" for anyone who wants to explore some great trail runs in Washington state. The author does a wonderful job of describing the trails, rating their difficulty, highlighting points of interest and even suggesting alternative activities at the same location (e.g. shorter nature trails) for our non-running family and friends!

All the trails I run are covered in this book, and there are dozens described that I can't wait to explore. As an additional bonus there are numerous tips from the author on what type of gear and supplies are useful to a trail runner and tips and tricks to get you "there and back again."

This book, as all books by Serre, is very good. He writes with precision, always giving the reader the central ideas. I can only think of Milnor as an author to compare to him. Buy the book if you are interested at all in the material. I am buying all books I can get by Serre.

great reference if you are doing work in algebraic representations of geometric structures at the graduate level. There aren't very many exercises, but as a graduate reference text, exercises don't do a whole lot of good. great explanations, and clear proofs.

This is the best book on the three famous math problems from antiquity
(squaring a circle, doubling a cube, and trisecting an angle) I have ever seen.
The authors do this job excellently in a lucid and live style.
I recommend highly this very nice and fabulous book to all math-lovers.

The easiest introduction to field extensions I've read
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-18
This is the easiest-to-read introduction to abstract algebra and, in particular, field extensions, that I have ever seen. It is easier to follow than Artin's famous little book, and has easy but useful problems to allow you to check your understanding.

This material is developed in order to explain the questions of how to prove that certain famously unsolved problems of geometry (a general Euclidean method for trisecting an arbitrary angle, constructing a square with the area of a given circle) are actually unsolvable. It also addresses the question of the transcendence of Euler's number (e).

The first problem is handled by understanding the abstract algebra of geometrical constructions; the second goes further into analysis as well; and I haven't finished reading the discussion on the third problem. Admittedly, the learning curve rises rather rapidly on the last two problems!

However, the book is worth reading even for the first problem alone, and as an introduction to abstract algebra.

This collection of readings was so helpful to me, even as a graduate student. I used selections from this book when I constructed a class for teaching assistants. Topics covered include academic freedom and free speech, getting a job, the art of publishing, and discussion vs. lecture courses. Absolutely indispensable reading for the academic. Will be an invaluable reference throughout an academic career.

This is excellent!

This is a book I wish someone had told me about when still a doctoral student -- it certainly would have helped a great deal over the years. Things obviously would have worked much better and my transition from Graduate School to the professoriate would have been much smoother. Every graduate student and every new assistant professor needs one on their shelves. Not only that: Graduate Faculty, please buy one for your teaching assistant, your doctoral student and every graduate student you advise. It will do them a world of good and they'll be ever grateful to you!

Marc Mancini, Phd, is the travel industry's most well-known industry educator and speaker.

As a travel school student (and later as an Instructor at the same school) I watched his many travel education videos and read many of his textbooks. He clearly presents topics vital to the travel industry and explains in depth subjects which should be required reading for all professionals in the industry.

Now, even with over 13 years working in various segments of the highly diverse travel and tourism field, I find reading Dr. Mancini's books and viewing his entertaining and informative videos enhances my everyday performance.

I highly recommend Dr. Mancini's materials to all currently employed in the travel industry and those considering a career change!!!

I recently enrolled in a series of travel courses through a community college. The first/introductory class required this textbook. It's not a book I would have just picked up, but I found the entire text thoroughly enjoyable. The chapters are quite informative even for veteran travelers. For new, or potential, travel students they provide an excellent overview of various segments of the travel industry. It's easy reading and Mr. Mancini throws in the odd, funny comment here and there. I looked forward to picking it up every day.

Insightful observations for Perceiving the English landscape
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-15
Laurie Olin immerses the novice and intellectual landscape observer in the experience of the British countryside. He reveals perceptions through drawings and writings, engaging the reader in historic as well as contemporary investigations. As an architect as well as a renowned landscape architect, Olin adds his unique slant in a beautifully told story. I particularly thought the pensive recanting of the English landscape experience important enough to require it as reading for my college design class who will travel to England next year.

After reading this book, I went out and bought a sketch book. Now, I'm daydreaming about spending the summer in the English countryside, or perhaps in Italy somewhere. Olin inspires the reader to draw. More importantly, he explains how drawing can help us understand places and the forces that shape landscapes. One learns a greater appreciation of ordinary places and the people who create them.

WHERE was this book when i graduated college 4 years ago!

This book is an excellent over-view of the television & film world. If you've got your production goals set higher than local broadcast news, than I HIGHLY recommend this book. There's a great section on putting together your production resume, great real-world advice from Sandra & her production colleagues, detailed descriptions of what every position on a Film & TV set does, valuable info on how to work in various markets (Chicago, New York, LA, etc). I bought the book a few months ago and had the fortunate chance of meeting the author, and she is genuinely a wonderful woman who truly wants to help those interested in getting into & succeeding in "the business".

This book is also an easy & quick read, I read most of the book on a flight out to LA from Chicago. "Action! Establishing your Career..." is an ESSENTIAL read if you plan on moving out to LA and you don't have many production contacts there...I'm looking at you recent college grads! I've even recommended this book to friends who are actors on their way out to the coasts so they are educated about sets, crews, etiquette, etc.

"Action!" is a much easier & faster read than "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide" (which is itself a great book, but more of a legal resource, basically saves you from asking your entertainment lawyer dumb questions).

I'm not a newbie to production and this isn't a fake review, I'm a freelance Commercial Producer who is also very active in Chicago independent film; having served as producer on 4 features in the past two years, negotiated distribution deals for features, and I remain active in the scene via a Chicago based non-profit indie-sponsorship company. I find that I continue to pull "Action! Establishing your Career" off my bookshelf to use as a reference on projects.

A handy and practical guide

Inspired me and changed me!

Review Date: 1997-11-25
When I read this book three years ago I never heard of a Decathlon and I never thought I'd be one. When my mom got me this book for me for the first time I was interested, and wanted to find out what this book was about. I was in track but I only ran the mid-distants runs. I do like to play around with different events and when I did I would do better then the best on the track team. So I began to compete in some events durning track meets just to find out that I was doing well in them. But my track coach would disapprove of trying too many events and not concentrating on my mid-distant runs. Well, I read this book and was introduced to the decathlon and I wanted to do it, and I did. I have competed in the decathlon for two years and have increase my score by 1000 points over that time and plan on doing even better next time. I am now training very hard for it and this time I'm going to be more ready then ever. This has done great things for me and Dave Johnson's life is so similar to mine. I was also a rebal in my early years and then I got a sign from God and was instantly changed. I would appreciate it if Dave Johnson's would read this. I want to think him for changing my life. -Aaron M. Mills
