Field Books

Previous reviewers have said it all - "savour every word"... "hats off to Kim Field" etc - but my enthusiam makes me want to throw my hat into the ring. I've been writing about music for newspapers and magazines for 25 years, as a sidelight to my job as a journalist, and I'm in awe of the job Field has done with this book. It's exquisitely written and packed with entertaining information. The 20th century harmonica world was populated by all manner of rascals, hobos, eccentrics and maestros (often all wrapped up in the same person), and Field tells their stories in a clean, organised fashion that captures the magic while never resorting to sentiment or hyperbole. While it's very much a book for harmonica nuts, I've been reading plenty of laugh-out-loud sections to my partner, whose passion is more in the classical piano mold. Over the years I've collected a number of compilations of obscure harp players, but they're not obscure anymore. Having them expertly set in the context of their colourful lives has made the listening immensely more rewarding. Bless you, Kim, for putting in the research in the nick of time, before many of these people were dead and unable to speak for themselves. And bless you for your highly professional yet heartfelt approach.

I found this to be a very enjoyable read and was disappointed when it was over. This should be recommended reading for anyone who plays or is a fan of the harmonica.

If you want to know something of the history of the instrument you are playing, you should have a copy of this book. Well written, entertaining, and loads of material. I especially like the interviews.

Hats off to Kim Field! This is a great book and a much needed one. His excellent research is augmented with great writing. Every harp player in the land should own one.

Very inspirational to me and others who keep trying to swipe my copy. This is so well written and organized that I keep reading much of it over and over again. It is one of those books that you savior every word. It is very inexpensive for such a valuable, meaty, entertaining resource. Mr. Field, thank you for this tremendous read. This material would make a great PBS Ken Burns type documentary.

Lynette has become a pirate to avenge her younger sister, brutally raped and left to die when she was just 14. Her pirating activities, while not limited to, focused on her enemy with the intent to destroy him financially. Our hero, Daniel, is caught in the crosshairs when Lynette & her crew come across his loaded ship and take his cargo, his ship, and him for ransom.

I enjoyed the book, while not a "keeper", it did help while away some time. If you enjoy a strong heroine and a pirate theme, then I recommend this book...

Amazing! Just the other day, I was discussing with my friends the fact that there are so few good pirate novels. Then I discovered Ms. Fields delightful first novel. It was beautifully written and deliciously naughty. It made me feel like a Girl Scout all over again. It reminds me of the time I traveled cross country with my friend Mr. Bubbles, listening to our tape of Tibetan yak love songs...but I digress. Kudos to Ms. Fields!

Not only was this book well written, it didn't insult my intelligence. While including everything I want from a historical romance, it was funny, smart and included delightful twists on the usual pirate fantasy.

What a breath of fresh air; the damsel rescues the knight. Ok, so I'm a little biased because I went to high school with this lovely author. But I'll admit I was skeptical about her writing romance novels since I'd never read any of her writing then. What a fabulous surprise! Her first book reads like some of the best historical fiction. Better still, she keeps Lynnette and Daniel's relationship progressing just fast enough to keep you interested and just slow enough to drive you crazy -- and not want to put the book down. This reviewer ended up staying up till 3am on a worknight just to finish the darned thing. I'm not sure whether to thank her or kill her. In summary, keep 'em coming, Hillary!

THE MAIDEN'S REVENGE is a superb swashbuckling romance. The dialogue is smooth and the plot in this adventure is very creative. The colorful descriptions make you feel as though you are sailing the high seas with Captain Thorne. Readers will enjoy watching the chemistry grow between Daniel and Lynnette. The scheme to hold Daniel for ransom becomes more complicated than Captain Thorne thought it would be.

Ms. Fields' first romance novel is full of passion, action, and sexy encounters. THE MAIDEN'S REVENGE is a lively and entertaining story. Captain Thorne is a character who shows the reader she can be a strong leader, but she can also be very sensual when the moment is right. This story is a page-turner and a definite keeper.

This book is a great companion to take on your day hikes. Very good photo's and descriptions to help identify various flora and fauna.

This book is amazing!! It is very educational. I like how it has only the plants and animals that are specific to New England. The pictures are clear and the blurbs about the animals and plants have just the right amount of information in them for learning. I also like how it has other aspects like the night sky, geology, climate, ect. and it is well divided into those categories. I use this book to teach kids about what they find out in nature. It is easy for them to use and quickly find what they are looking at. It is also easy for them to read and understand. Some of them just like perusing through it to see what is around them. Once again, an amazing book for yourself, family, or for educational purposes. I wouldn't travel in New England without it.

After using the Northwest version of this Audubon series, the New England version was attractive as a companion field guide to my bird books. Like the Northwest version, the New England version hasn't disappointed me.

has what I needed, but isn't very good with the oaks, maple trees, and some fish.

After flipping through and enjoying the sharp photography of this book, you will realize that it is also abounding in interesting facts concerning all of New England. Ever wonder what kind of fish you caught last summer or what that caterpillar will change into? Whether you need to know what kind of Oak tree is in your backyard or want to check out the constellations at various seasons - it's in this book! Great (and small enough) to take on hikes to identify animal tracks, flowers and even mushrooms! Although I have a few birding books, I find this one is easiest to use for identification. If you live in NE and want to know what is happening outdoors this book will pique your interest.

It's nice to have the combination of someone so well researched who is simultaneously an excellent practitioner. Lots of great ideas about transplanting (I hadn't heard of soil blocks before). Many great tool recommendations as well. This is worth the time and money!

This is absolutely the best, straightforward, down to earth, organic gardening book I have ever read. No hype, no buzzwords, no new age crap, no agenda. Simply down to earth - literally.

This book is awesome. Eliot presents an abundance of information. The information is organized and clear. Eliot does not assume what we already know, and what we have at our disposal. For example, many books will tell you how to create a mulch pile. You need this much brown matter, this much green matter, ... . That is all fine and dandy, but where do I magically get all of this material! Eliot understands this and explains many ways we can obtain the mulch material. He also does not assume your knowledge basis. For example, he will explain what and how a lugume works. This book is a constant resource for the organic gardener.

A great book!

Got me hiped up for my next several years here in Missouri. Practical, simplified systems for both the new and novice organic gardener. Definitely a fun read. Bring your highlighter. Thank you to the author, and all of the great shoulders that he stood on to get to this point...

Mr. Coleman has packed so much information into this wonderful book! I have started to use many of his suggestions. Keeping the costs of growing food down was one of the first subjects that caught my attention.

The book is very comprehensive. Unfortunately, even though it claims to be a field guide, it is too heavy to carry around. It is not a book to take with you on a bird walk.

An outstanding and essential book to help you identify the many magnificent birds inhabiting the savannah when on safari in Kenya. In fact, this is the book our certified guide and driver, a Masai, used daily and kept next to him at all times! LLC

I used it many times in Tanzania and it is also fantastic book for Israel and the Middle East!

This book is one of the best field guides I have ever had on African birds. It is extremely detailed and has pictures of so many birds, it is just AMAZING.

I simply had to acquire this one when I saw it in a bookshop in Nairobi. I had another field guide, but wasn't happy with it. Great illustrations. It is now my faviourite souvenir from Kenya. Its only fault is its weight, but I carry it in a shoulder bag. The book also has usefulness outside the target zone: Several birds seen in Cameron are illustrated in it. I always like to compare illustrations and was glad to have it with me when in Yaounde. A book to make others jealous by. You can set it on the coffe table as a conversation piece or to get the children interested without coaxing them.

I discovered this book in high school back in the '70's and have reread it many times over the years. It is funny, moving, beautifully written, I believe the best American novel I've ever read. I was so enamored, I wrote the author, asking him tips on how to be a writer. He wrote me back a few fierce letters, passionate about his work and writing and writers. I actually had the guts to send him a piece of my own work, which he agreed to read. He savaged it, and that was devastating, but, over time, I found his advice to be 100% correct: be brave; dig deep into yourself and learn to listen to the writer who you are. What I've found baffling over these many years since the book was published (in 1974), was that this fine writer, a protege of the the wonderful writer Betty Smith ("A Tree Grows In Brooklyn) has never written a second book. What a terrible loss for us all.

Like another reviewer, I've had this book for years but never got around to actually reading it. But when I did, I couldn't believe I had let this sit on my shelf untouched! Excellent. And yes, it's right up there with the other classics like Tom Sawyer, To Kill A Mockingbird etc. Perfect for a rainy afternoon when you can curl up in bed and enjoy it.

"A Cry of Angels", which I have reread a few times, is probably one of the best books I have ever read. I rate it up there with "To Kill a Mockingbird", "The Secret of Santa Vittoria", and "The Milagro Beanfield War", all of which I consider classics.

This story of a Southern boy, his friends and relations, is immaculately drawn and very endearing. With each read the book retains its magic and charm and I can finally replace my old beat up paperback with this newly reissued edition.

Until this new edition, the book had been out of print for years. Fortunately readers will now be able to rediscover this wonderful secret classic. Unfortunately Jeff Fields has never written another novel, which is a great loss for anyone who loves great literature and a great story.

I knew Jeff Fields when he worked as a producer at a local television station in Jacksonville, Florida, and read the book reluctantly and only out of courtesy, not imagining that I was about to discover one of the great books of my life. Like most of the earlier reviewers I cannot understand why this book has not become a mega hit best seller. Jeff went to Hollywood as a script writer for the production of a movie about his book. Things did not go well with the producers when Jeff refused to change the story to suit them; he resigned and the movie was never completed as far as I know. Too bad, all someone has to do is follow the book EXACTLY and they will have an academy award contender. I have not seen Jeff since about 1985? and don't know if he continues to write. In an case, don't fail to buy this book!

A freind who is an avid reader repeatedly spoke about this book. She would not lend out her copy because the book was out of print. Finally and thankfully, it has been reprinted. I agree that it should be required reading for high school. There is so much substance; history, beautiful writing,and of course humor that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. In my opinion, there are too many coming-of-age books but it all depends on how one grows up.

I would definitely recommend this booklet for any one who practices or intends to practice ems. Its very detailed and great illustrations and not to big to carry in your pocket.

This is a great reference book for anyone in the ALS field, Easy to read and understand. Lots of helpful info. Would recommend to anyone!!!

This product is excellent for providing a quick reference to different medications. I love that I can turn to the medicine page and find out why the patient is taking that medicine. There are to many available medications to easily remember.

The pediatric reference section - for typical HR, kg and such for a certain age, is also wonderful.

Great reference book to have at 3 a.m. when you're brain may not be functioning at optimum capacity.

I've been using the EMS field guide since I graduated as a Paramedic in 1990...

Important and useful data is presented in a clear and concise format.

The guide is constantly updated to reflect the latest AHA guidelines.

Well designed, rugged and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket - who could ask for more ?

I haven't finished it yet, but so far it's been amazing how much info you can get from there. It gives you fantastic tips and leads you through your training based on simple and easy steps. Worth buying!

I bought this book over five months ago. I was looking for a plan that fit into my busy schedule but would allow me to complete my first half ironman. Yesterday, I crossed the finish line at Ironman Florida 70.3. In a nutshell, the plans in this book work. I hit every training session AND followed the strength training religiously. I am a stronger athlete because of it. The rest of the book is filled with great information on how to prepare, execute, complete, and recover from triathlons. If you are looking for information on how to complete your next tri, and you don't have twenty hours a week to train, then this book is for you. Simple enough.

If you haven't competed for a while and need guidance to get you to the finish line then this is the book for you! I had no idea how to properly train for a triathlon until reading "The 12-Week Triathlete". The book is easy to read and offers a step by step approach for competing at all levels, from the beginner to the advanced triathlete. After not competing for almost ten years I was able to successfully complete my first Half Ironman following his program! I look forward to improving on my personnal best at the next race and Tom's book will be my guide/coach again.

I cannot recommend this book more highly. Not only did it help me accomplish my triathlon goal, but I also actually enjoyed the experience and can't wait to do another. As an out-of-shape, 42 year old, mother of 2 I needed not only a training plan, but the confidence to actually believe that I could make this happen. Tom's book was the perfect blend of honest, funny, realism that I needed to separate what was truly important for me to focus on and what I could just not worry about. I carried this book around with me and reread the last 3 chapters about 12 times the weekend of my race just to help me calm down. If you've never done a tri and think you couldn't possibly....then this is the book for you. Because you can!

Tom Holland's "The 12-Week Triathlete" is a truly amazing guide for anyone who wants to get into the sport of triathlon or improve their level of performance. I finished my first tri last month after following Tom's program and essentially using the book as my training bible and "coach". It is very comprehensive across all the necessary physical, mental and nutritional preparation, such that I was truly able to go from ground zero to feeling well prepared and confident on race day. Detailed workout plans are matched with great anecdotes that help you understand the sport better. I found that it is written in a great voice for those of us who almost certainly never plan on becoming elite triathletes but who really want to get into great shape and get involved in a very exciting (but otherwise daunting) sport. Thanks Tom!

I have been a shell collector for more than 25 years and along this years, this is the first time that I get such an interesting, well-documented, beautyfully illustrated and skillfully designed book on this subject. I am very happy with this purchase. The book has 411 pages with information and has about 12 photographs in each page giving a perfect appreciation of thousands of shells from everywhere. Each photo includes the common name (obviously valid in English speaking countries only), the scientific name, average length of adults (in centimeters and inches), brief information of geographical distribution and synonym names. Oh!, I almost forget to say that the authors,R. Tucker Abbott and S. Peter Dance are two famous conchologists leading this field of science for many, many years. So, this book informs, teaches and makes it very funny to learn and investigate in the universe of shells. "Bon apetit", collectors!!!

I had an earlier printing of this book (1983) and was disappointed to find that the 2000 edition I just purchased was virtually identical apart from a page of corrections at the end which would be much more useful if incorporated into the text. I feel that this excellent book needs updating to keep it as the No 1 general book on seashell identification.

This book is very informative and descriptive if you're looking to collect exotic shells from different parts of the world.

I have been a shell collector for a very long time now. This is now my second copy of this book, as I have worn the first copy out. It is the most comprehensive identifier book around. The color photos are excellent, and the amount of species depicted is impressive! This book, along with Jerome M. Eisenberg's A Collectors Guide to the Sea Shells of the World, are probably the only two books on Sea Shells, a novice collector will ever need. The serious collector will also benefit from these books as well.

This is a great book which hv given me alot of info, but still can upgrate by increase more pictures & decription for seashells of the world.

I'm 27 and very pleased with this wonderful crochet book from KLUTZ. The instructions are very easy and the projects are cute and perfect for any beginner. I especially love the hat. Everyone in my family wants one and I'm busy working on it!:) I was so pleased with this book that I ordered the knitting book from KLUTZ as well. I enjoyed the projects in this book a little more and the yarn that comes with this book is very beautiful. After you have done all the projects in this book you will feel ready for more challenging projects! Get ready to get HOOKED!

As far as crochet is concerned, I consider myself an intermediate beginner. Badly written patterns still frustrate me, and there are a few crochet books that I wouldn't mind burning with great glee. This Klutz book is actually the fourth "beginner" crochet book I got... but I really wish it had been the first. It would have saved me a lot of frustration!

I got this kit for Christmas, and started working on the projects right away. To my great delight, the instructions were so simple and very easy to follow. I love the diagrams with the highlighted stitches, so you know exactly where to put your hook for the next stitch. Each step of each project is written out and/or illustrated clearly. When I've followed other patterns, I usually have to rip out a whole round or row of stitches because the unclear instructions made me guess at where to put my hook. While doing these projects, I didn't have to rip anything out!

By the evening, I'd already learned how to do a granny square, crochet a cute little flower... and I'd even completed the whole hat! Granted, I have some experience with crochet so I'm probably a little faster than a true beginner. But I was thrilled with how the patterns turned out and that I didn't have to undo a whole bunch of stitches because the pattern wasn't clear enough.

The kit itself is pretty cute, and makes a great gift. There is quite a bit of yarn (three skeins of the teal stuff and one skein of the lighter-weight periwinkle). I wouldn't mind finding out where to get more of it, because it looks quite nice when it's all crocheted into a project.

Now, if only I could find a book with similar clear instructions to take my skills to the next level...

My Mom was using this with my girls, and she has crocheted for decades. She was very impressed and said she learned a few things herself. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. We use it for birthday gifts now for girls 8 and older. Everyone has loved it.

I have own a couple of crochet books for beginners and this one is the best one I've had. It was real clear and simple. I think if I can do it, everybody can do it too. This book is highly recommended. Enjoy.

i had been wanting to learn crochet for a long time. on a whim, i bought this kit (instruction book, hook, yarn, stitch markers and tapestry needle). i am SO glad i did.

i've only been crocheting now for about six months, but with the basics taught in the book, i'm able to crochet at about an advanced beginner/intermediate level. and i find myself referring back to the book for reference or a simple refresher. i've crocheted scarves, hats, small bags, and a large afghan. i now have three afghans in the works using different sized hooks for each one, as well as different types of yarn.

beware: it's addicting!
