Excellent look at World War II USAAF training bases
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-21
This book tells the story of the build up of the USAAF training program in the U.S. prior to and during WW II. Each chapter focuses on an airbase to tell part of that story. For example, the first chapter (Atterbury Army Air Field)tells how they built these "temporary" bases in about six months time. Other chpaters tell about basic flight training,(Coffeyville Army Air Field), B-17 pilot training,(Lockbourne Army Air Field), etc. Bases include, Freeman Field, Chanute Field, Smyrna Army Air Field, Ephrata Army Air Field, and Hendricks Field. In total 12 former training fields are detailed. To write the book, the author visited the fields, researched their history, and interviewed those who were there. The book has about 220 photos that show the fields activities, and the field as it was then and is now. The appendix lists the names and locations of about 700 Army Air Force installations in use in the U. S. during late 1943,early 1944. Not all installations are listed because the list would change each month.

A comprehensive account of an important part of WWII history

Forgotten Fields is an excellent comprehensive study of an often overlooked portion of American history. Few people realize how many now vacant airfields in the U.S. were once home to hundreds of thousands of men and women as they trained to serve our country. The book is written in a very accessable style - not filled with data, but rather it is intended to serve as a reference guide and ultimately as a tribute to the men and women who sacrificed so much for our country. The book is filled with pictures, both from the 1940's and today, giving the reader a sense of what a vast undertaking it was to build our air forces in WWII. The appendix of the book lists USAAF airfields and approximate locations. The number of airfields is astounding! This is a simply wonderful book for anyone interested in US history, particularly aviation history. It's amazing to realize that our victory in WWII was started in our very own backyards!

WOW! Best look at WWII training programs I've ever seen!

I've read it cover to cover many times, and see something new each time. A must-read for all aviation buffs - and a bargain to boot! Buy this book!

I was so delighted to find a cookbook with wonderful tasting foods that are made with healthful ingredients and simplicity in mind. Even novice cooks will be amazed at the gourmet meals they can make without alot of difficulty. You can literally use this one cookbook for appetizer, salad, main dish and dessert. And might I add, there are some of the most delicious desserts in this cookbook. It is definitely a must have for everyone's kitchen!

I started catfishing again this past year after about 20 years and realized I had forgotten a lot of stuff about catfishing. My wife bought this book for me for Christmas, and it is great. It reminded me of everything I had forgotten over the years, and it taught me a LOT of new things I never even knew about. This is as complete as the average (and above average) catfish angler could ask for. Highly recommended for all ages and skill levels.

Fishing for Catfish is a winner.

From Fairbanks to Boston is a great read for someone who has never run a marathon (like me). I loved the different personal story of each marathon, and it was motivating to read the experiences of so many first time
marathoners. If you are a runner, then the book can also be your preview guide to the layout and the organization of each marathon.

There are so many ways this and other Gaspard and Lisa books are a wonderful treat. What an original fresh way of telling a story, conveying the characters personality and sense of humor and adventure. You and your children will delight in finding the funny little details. You cannot go wrong with this or any of the other stories in this series.

I read to my son every day and go to the library once a week. Too many children's books today are crass and sarcastic. That's why I love the Gaspard and Lisa series. They are truly charming, with cute illustrations and delightful stories not necessarily designed to teach any lessons other than friends are great and adventures are fun.

Little Gaspard and Lisa, two adorable and endearing pups, are on their way to the Museum of Natural History, and they couldn't be more excited. They're going to see everything, butterflies, monkeys, tigers, elephants, skeletons, and best of all, extinct animals" ...Please try to stay out of trouble," their teacher reminds them, but trouble is their middle name, and though they don't mean to, Gaspard and Lisa turn this field trip into an unexpected, though amusing, misadventure..... Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben are back with another delightful and humorous Gaspard and Lisa adventure. Ms Gutman's simple and straightforward text will be easily devoured and enjoyed by emerging readers, and is complemented by Mr Hallensleben's gorgeous, lush, and expressive artwork. This narrative by George Sheehan transcends running. Although it is 'sport-specific', Dr. Sheehan has shown us the 'Way', and he does it simplistically. This book should be read by all atheletes, regardless of their particular sport. He is telling us something here...

I'm relatively new to running and haven't read anything else written by Dr. Sheehan...but I certainly plan to.

The man can write. The book is broken into little one or two page essays (maybe former RW columns?) which are, if nothing else, good bathroom reading fodder.

If you're looking for a book which will help you set a new PR, you should probably look elsewhere, but if you're a true running afficianado(sp?), pick up a copy of this book and you won't be disappointed.

Made Me Look Cool & Thouthtful

This book saved my life. Our 5th anniversary was last week and I didn't have a clue about what to give my wife. We said small, thoughtful gifts. Nothing extravagent. That's harder than buying expensive jewlery! Talk about pressure. A friend recommended the ideas in Giving with Meaning and I can't tell you how it saved my anniversary. I used the lettuce idea (you've got to read the book -- it's an idea for lovers). I bought a great salad bowl and then made a salad and served it to her with her favorite wine. I even went the extra mile and wrote a note using the ideas in the book. I also gave her a scarf with fringe -- the fringe is a symbol of good luck and she's going for a new job. This book gives the folklore behind all kinds of ordinary items, like a cat or an evergreen tree, or a pineapple and then tells you how to use the ideas for cool, interesting gifts. Absolutely great book. I showed it to my wife afterward and she's going to buy several for gifts. It's beautifully designed and in color. We both recommend it.

For Those Who Are Scared of Facing Their Destiny

Review Date: 2000-12-16
I read this book in one sitting. It felt like a deep conversation that I'd have with two old friends at two in the morning. Calvin and Alvin's voices intertwine throughout the book to give this incredible view of their life which in many ways feels like one life. They say, "This is who we are and this is what we have experienced and this is what we have learned." What I heard is, "Be who you are and experience what you experience and learn from it." Their story is told simply, with love and reverence. Their story is one that hands you, the reader, courage as if it is their gift to you. Their story encourages you to look within yourself and say, "Oh yeah, this is who I am supposed to be. How did I get so lost? How do I return to where I need to be?" Go to YOUR destiny. I will meet you there.

This book touches your spirit and is simply beautiful. The photographs are beautiful and hearing the twins in each of their own voices discussing their lives as twins; family life; their struggles and their triumphs is a work to behold.

They make you know that anything is possible and share the steps they've taken to attain their successes. Could not put it down.

The Christian game plan
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-13
Chuck D. Pierce, gifted author and minster, details the war that the church is and will be facing as the return of Jesus comes closer. He explains nine different wars that the church is fighting on different fronts: the mind, blood, time, presence-and-glory, power, wealth, war of the nations, and harvest wars.

Each chapter in the book provides a deeper look at various aspects of the war and strategies for becoming a winner in that war. For instance, the mind war deals with gaining peace in our daily lives, the blood war explains how to break the patterns of bad behavior handed down from our forefathers, the time war deals with how little time we have and how to spend it wisely for God. He goes on to emphasize that unless the church gains victory in all these areas, it cannot go forward. The only way to defeat the enemy in each instance is to follow God's strategies for winning these wars.

After reading this book, I felt more prepared to deal with many situations in my own life. After all, who does not struggle with lack of peace or time in certain situations?

Pierce writes with insight and fervency as he tries to communicate to the readers how important it is to follow God's plan. His anecdotes and short stories are excellent analogies, making the book an interesting read.

This is a book every Christian should read; otherwise they are in battle without knowing the game plan, which is a recipe for disaster!

I am so grateful for this book. It has answered so many questions I have had. It explains the forces at work. A greater understanding of atonement, "The Blood" was also explained. Intercession, the four watches: why it is necessary; and what is ahead for us all. It gave me a much greater understanding of God's will for me, personally.
I hope to meet Mr. Pierce someday and thank him personally.
I have purchased this book for friends as a gift and told others about it, as well.

"A Booklover's Companion"--and, oh, how very true that is! I love to just veg out in a comfortable chair and page slowly through this wonderful compendium (I wish Mr. Gilbar would bring out a "Son of Good Books" that would update us on what he's been reading in the 20 years since he compiled it) of thematically arranged lists of books both famous and lesser-known. Everything from Homer's epics to Time-Life's Old West series and the Rivers of America books is in here, each of them personally read by the compiler. His squibs are necessarily brief--after all, he's trying to explain the attraction of some 9000 different works!--but should at least give you a hint of whether the book might be worth a look; and, as he points out, all "exist and can be found"--through InterLibrary Loan if you're low on funds. But no matter how low on funds you may be, if you love to read, you should own "Good Books," and that's not a general recommendation.

A Fantastic Guide By a Writer Who Trusts his Own Curiosity

With all the controversy that swirls around "best of" lists today, it's a pleasure to encounter a "list" of great books in which the compiler doesn't claim any unique insight other than his own love for literature. Gilbar seems to be a reader who hasn't forgotten what it means to value a book for its adventurousness, its quirkiness, and its visceral appeal. He doesn't try to use academic or professional standards to judge a work -- rather, he uses his own wide-ranging and boisterous curiosity to compile a reading list which any book lover can enjoy.
