The poetry of George Petty is beautiful. The language sings. The images grip. The juxtaposition of words opens up experiences you know you have had, but have forgotten. And in addition to being beautiful, his work is heart-felt. You come away knowing the characters, like Alex, from the inside out. His characters are people you have known, or they are pieces of yourself you can identify with and learn from. George also has written some of the most down-to-earth natural images you will ever read. A great way to spend an afternoon!

George Petty's sensitive poems allow us to share his perceptions of his parents, friends, children and the natural world in which he revels. This is a book that I will return to often.

I have found this book to be an extremely good reference over the years for a non-meteorologist; this coming from a biogeochemist - I have used it for years and am now buying it. Another very good reference is Stahl (of course)

Why don't we make this good book even better? I happened to notice that the 2nd equation of A1.2 on page 339 was wrong. Cosine value should always be between -1 and +1. In table A3.1 on page 393, SI unit for the last three columns is also problematic. I think it should be sqaure meter per second multiplied by 10 to -6. Check those out.

I got some strange looks while reading this book on the subway, because I was laughing out loud. The writing is so smart and funny. It really rings true. I can think of examples of every bird/boy in the book. I am going to buy a copy of this book for all of my single friends! I love it.

Girls: If you're like me, "normal" dating guides leave you feeling nauseous. This tongue-in-cheek guide finally treats dating (or "mating") with the levity it deserves. Wonder which bird you're nesting with? Want to seek out your dream bird in his natural habitat? Whether you're dating or in a serious relationship, finding out which bird you're naturally attracted to--or identifying the one you're with--will help you avoid ruffled feathers. After reading "Boys of a Feather," I discovered that I'm continually pursuing a swan but what I really should be after is an eagle. Now when I meet a guy I can't help but try and determine which species of bird he is, which if you think about it, makes the whole process that much more fun. It's kind of like picturing your date in his Calvins. Whether or not you subscribe to Amy and Meg's theory, this book is a hoot.

This book is a sensational read. Very indepth, very interesting and easy to understand. Amy did a fabulous job on this and I want my copy signed. This is a nationally known writer and reporter for a very distinguished publication and I can see she used all of her learned skills to make this book well worth buying.

Robert Frost said "All the fun's in how you say a thing." While most poets may not describe the extremely difficult process of crafting powerful, often painful images and ideas out of our rather plain vanilla language 'fun', one feels Ms. Beeder has made the sacrifice and we are the better for her efforts. She reminds us that there can be power in words during an age when all it seems society reacts to is 'some war set fire on a massacre hill' as the poet so beautifully puts it. I believe the highest compliment I can pay to a poet is that their words travel with me. Several passages from Ms. Beeder's have already bored into my overcrowded consciousness and now I look forward to 'traveling the damp side of high roads at dusk."

The title of this review, from the poem "Fever" serves as an example of some of the precise and beautiful lyric moments in Beeder's book, Burn the Field. without a doubt, this is one of the better books of poetry I've encountered in the past several years. The poems are intricate works of rich image and delicate language and they cover an amazing range of subject matter and tonal qualities. Most striking is Amy Beeder's ability to create complicated symbiotic forms for her work. The variety of structural elements that frame the poem's lush language are invariably useful and appropriate. Enjoy!

If you love the sound and texture of language, you'll adore this book

I have been following Amy Beeder's marvelous work in magazines for years, so what a joy it is to finally have a collection of her poems in hand. She is a poet's poet, one of a very few contemporary writers who is truly a master at her craft, with a skilled ear for meter, an eye for vibrant (and sometimes, disturbing) images and an unusually rich word palate. Her poems are a resonant tapestry of sound. It's a delicious experience to read them aloud. What's more, Beeder's subjects are always striking -- from the arrogant Pasteur to a runaway train "flashing/ like a long black casket" to a dead Haitian girl in a yellow dress "on a heap of street sweepings high/as a pyre, laid on snarled wire and dented rim." This book is wonderful.

Butterflies through Binoculars: A Field, Finding, and Gardening Guide to Butterflies in Florida (Butterflies and Others Through Binoculars Field Guide Series,) This is an excellent reference book for butterfly lovers in the State of Florida. I take it with me on my butterfly field trips and when I sit in my yard to observe them. The book has excellent photos, detailed information for each species, and the habitat locations. It's an easy book to carry and pack.

Simply Superb

This is one of the best presented field guides I have ever seen. Each and every species of Florida butterfly is pictured and described. Most butterfly guides I've seen use pictures of preserved specimens in a collection. This can be confusing because parts of the wings normally hidden are exposed when the collected specimen is mounted. This book avoids this problem by using only pictures taken in the wild (except for a few rare species). No more unnatural poses!

The text is easily readable without extensive knowledge of obscure scientific words and has enough humor to keep it from getting dry and technical, but not so much that it overpowers the book.

This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in Florida butterflies.

Best field guide for butterflies of the northeast

If you are looking for a filed guide to the butterflies of the northeastern United States, this is THE book to get. Written for a relatively small geographical area, the book contains only those butterflies likely to be seen in the regioon...unlike other guidebooks which offer many photos of butterflies not native to the regioon you are in. Excellent photos and the reduced subject area result in quick identifications. Although written for the northeast, the book is useful over a wider range...I have even used it in Texas to great effect. Don't put too much stock in the information about flight period and abundance, though. And don't expect much info on larval hostplants, etc

Are angels living among us?
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-27
Angel stories have certainly been popular for the last two decades. Some people claimed to have seen angels in dreams and apparitions, communicated with angels, and maintain a connection to their own guardian angel. However, this book, more aptly referred to as a workbook, is not about angelic encounters or angel apparitions; The Call is a book about being an angel. The question that this book raises is, are you an angelic human? Dr. Petrinovich provides explanations for the feelings and connections that some people have with the angels. Providing explanations for DNA structures, Dr. Petrinovich describes the particulars about DNA strands and their meanings to angels in human form. This book offers everyone an easy to read reference to complex biochemistry and quantum physics. I was impressed with Dr. Petrinovich's ability to write for the lay person. Due to the findings of my research studying people who claim to have experienced Divine encounters and religious apparitions, and a subsequent sense of mission for some, I know there are many people who will find this book very helpful, comforting, affirming, and even synchronistic. It is due to the potential helpfulness of this book that I give it five stars. As Dr. Petrinovich aptly stated regarding angelic humans, "this does not mean you are special--it means you are different." Each reader will have an opportunity, while reading this book, to determine if she or he is one to answer "The Call".

This book explains the connection between the biological and spiritual dimensions of humans. It is the first book that helped me connect the knowledge of DNA with human spiritual growth. The author's premise that the energy of God is universal and is within each of us is powerful and empowering. I found this book fascinating, promising, and compelling -- especially during the current world's need for unity and harmony.

The Call - Awakening the Angelic Human, is a fabulous book by Toni Sar'h Petrinovich, a Master Teacher and writer. Chapter titles include, Vibration of the Angelic Human, Illusion of Negativity, The One Heart, Dimensions and Manifestation and Twelve Dimensions and DNA. Her Heart and Soul Knowing pours forth from the pages of this book. It is a primer for those who think they are, know they are or desire to be an Angelic Human. This book asked me to go deep within myself to see who I Truly AM. I AM an Angelic Human, (AH). Toni Sar'h explains; "AHs are humans who have slumbering DNA awaiting the wakening to the remembrance of their mission to hold the Christos in the heart--- the heart of the One... The AHs have made an agreement, a contract, to bring this vibration to earth at this time when there is a swing in the balance of the polarity. That is why the awakening is happening at this time."
Toni Sar'h delves into science, DNA and quantum physics in a way that is fascinating and easily understood. The book includes a Conscious DNA Awakening ritual and many different exercises to accelerate the Knowing and Remembering of Who We Are at this crucial time of earth's magnificent unfolding. This book touched me on many different levels of my Being and opened me to great awareness' within my Heart and Soul. I Whole-Heartedly urge you to read this book and discover your true identity.

A Good Starting Point
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-03
Careers in Criminal Justice is a good starting point for those who are either considering or actively pursuing a career in law enforcement. Stephens profiles a variety of careers such as Chief of Police, State Attorney, small town and city police officers, FBI, forensics, and more. Each profile centers on one officer, who explains how he or she became interested in their chosen field, the kinds of education they had to acquire both in school and on the job, and what traits an officer needs to possess in order to succeed. The most prevalent tip throughout the book was to gain a wide variety of education due to the growing cultural and technological trends in today's society.
This book is a short 91 pages, and it doesn't list websites or professional organizations like several other books about law enforcement. But it is written in a conversational style, giving the reader a first-hand idea of what it is like to work out in the field or in a lab. Recommended.

As a former bartender at a private country club, I can fully appreciate Mr. Field's work and position at the Ritz Paris. His book is a vey informative and enjoyable read. I had the pleasure to live at the Ritz for two weeks in 1981 after graduation from college, and look forward to visiting again soon to see the completed renovations that were in progress when I was there. The book sure makes me yearn to return to the Ritz as soon as I can. When I do, I will be sure to drop by the bar to say "hello" to a very accomplished barman!

I have had the enjoyable opportunity to share many cocktails with Colin, and am extremely thrilled that he has published a book of some of the great cocktails that he serves to his guests at the Ritz in Paris.

While this book does have a "small" collection of recipes for standard cocktials (Mojito, Whiskey Sour, Pina Colada, Daiquiri...), it is a very small list, and simply represents some of the standard cocktails the way that Colin makes them in his bar. This book instead shines in the collection of cocktails that appear in Chapter 5 : "Cocktails and the stories that belong to them". Here Colin shares his recipes for the "Ritz Pimm's", "Miss Bonde", "The Georges", "Serendipiti", and many others which Mr. Field shares not only the recipe, but some of the story surrounding its birth.

The "Bar Hemingway" is indeed a unique bar in the heart of Paris, just as Colin Field is a unique bartender. It should then come as no great surprise that his first cocktail book reflects this uniqueness in ways that will make it a favorite of many.

I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to spend New Year at the Ritz in Paris. The absolute highlight was the time spent in the Hemingway Bar. I never understood the meaning of serendipity until I found it, and to find there was a cocktail named after it when I did was more than the icing on the cake. Colin and his colleagues are not only masters of their trade, but also charming, witty, knowledgeable, humurous in the extreme. The perfect barmen. I bought the book as a souvenir and have been unable to put it down since opening at the first page. This is a must for any pretender to Colin's throne. Unfortunately, I suspect his abdication from the position of best bartender in the world will be a long time coming. The Hemingway Bar is the best kept secret in Paris and long may it remain so. Ssssshhh, don't tell anyone.
