This is an excellent book if you want to understand Electrodynamics for what it really is-a relativistic field theory!

Very nice and concise book

Starts from the foundations of Special-Relativity, including Lorentz transformation, groups and spinors, then dynamics.
Formulation of Lagrangian fields and the conserved quantities is also very good, though I think Rohrlich's book is better.
Covers self-interaction and radiation reaction in a very clear way.
In short, for this price, it is truly a gem.

On the subject of Classical fields, I have not read a better book than Barut's. It is clear and comprehensive. I discovered more about things like the Lorentz group and the Lagrangian formalism of fields than I thought existed. It is an excellent book by all standards. If you need to learn Quantum Field theory, start here first. Learn all about classical fields. The equations in this book are ready for quantization.

This is a concise, clear, friendly but unfussy little book on classical electrodynamics (CED), and relativistic fields. Simultaneously, it provides an easy introduction to the mathematical machinery of relativistic dynamics and fields. There is an agreeable emphasis on the Lagrangian formulations, a good-sized chapter devoted to radiation and radiation-reaction, and a (regrettably) short piece on action-at-a-distance CED. This book is about the structure of CED in general, and does not deal with particular arrangements of charges, currents, coils, etc. etc. in the manner of an undergraduate text on EM.

Excellent Book for Introduction to Environmental Science
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-17
I was asked to evaluate ths for the textbook selection committee at a local high school for possible use as the text book for an environmental science class next year. Since my degree is in Environmental Science, and I have done a lot of work with environmental education, I have read a large number of environmental science books and have seen the good, bad and worst of books on the market.

At first I just planned to skim the book, but after reading a few pages I decided to look at the book more closely, and I was impressed with what I saw. The book is well written in clear, easy to understand language, using a good amount of well done graphs, charts and photos. The layout, in addition, was good, making the book flow in an orderly manner.

The information in the book was excellent, and covered the entire range, as much as is possible in one book, of environmental science. The biology and chemistry were integrated nicely and flowed smoothly.

I have rated this book as four stars only because I feel the authors didn't cover the section on renewable energy as well as I would have liked. The book tended to move through the subject rather quickly, offering only a limited view of what can be done to eliminate the use of fossil fuels. In all other ways this book was superior to many I have read.

I would highly recommend this for an introduction course in college, and also think it would bean excellent choice for a text at the AP or regular high school level, provided the students had enough science background to be able to understand the science. I even believe that a motivated home schooled student could study from this book and do quite well in the subject. Overall, one of the best introductory text books I've had the pleasure of reading.

The thing that I like the most about this book is the way chemistry is incorporated into the sciences that relate to environment. It has all the basic chemistry skills required for one to be able to relate to environment at the introductory level.

The Appendix on Environmental Chemistry is very well presented. It has most of the concepts that one require in this course. It is written in short and to the point to avoid confusion, but with high clarity. That is what students appreciate. Students do not need to refer to other textbooks. The material includes all that a student need to understand the basic concepts of chemsitry as applied to environmental science.

The format is outstanding. It is best suited for students taking Environmental Science. It just delivers materials of basic interest with excellent problems and things to ponder sections. The illustrations are superb.

Students are often frustrated with voluminous information. They usually buy a book and are turned off and do not read it. They need concise and just the right stuff in it. This book has that quality. Students would love it and I am glad it is on the market.

It was a delight reading this study guide. Excellent job! It just does a good service to students.

Well written, well organized, and a helpful contribution to the field

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) was developed by Roger Callahan in the 1970's. This involves touching or tapping on prescribed series (algorithms) of acupuncture points that are specific for particular problems.

Prior to starting a series of these interventions, a person assesses her level of distress on a scale of "0" (not at all" to "10" (the worst I could feel at this moment as I focus on this issue). While tapping, a person will focus mentally on an affirmation. This process is repeated until the distress level is zero.

In a brief period, many people can eliminate their symptoms and transform their lives. Being trained in psychology, medicine, psychiatry and research, I was highly skeptical when I first heard of this therapy. I expected that if symptoms were rapidly eliminated, people would have them recur or would develop other symptoms - in the service of unconscious conflicts and needs. Having been an observer and active participant in these Meridian Based Therapies (MBTs) for five years, my opinions have drastically changed. I've seen hundreds of people cured of problems - major and minor - with these brief interventions.

These authors bring us an excellent summary of their variation on this system of treatment, which they call Evolving Thought Field Therapy (EvTFT). They summarize succinctly the history of TFT and explain the ways in which they have taken this further. Diepold, in particular, has pioneered new approaches that involve breathing to augment the therapeutic effects of treatment. In addition, muscle testing derived from Kinesiology is used to identify issues and attitudes that may impede or facilitate therapy.

This book is a helpful contribution to the field. It is clearly written and well organized, with illustrations to identify acupressure points and muscle testing methods, ample case examples, an excellent index, and generous references for further perusal.

The textbook that sets the gold standard for TFT

The authors bring nearly 100 years's worth of clinical experience to their collaboration in this unification of many aspects of thought field therapy and body/mind/energy work. It's the first book that provides a cohesive explanation of *how* energy psychotherapy seems to work. By drawing in examples from many different ways of thinking about energy fields in human experience, the authors show how EvTFT just seems to "make sense" on many levels--intuitive, historical, spiritual and yes, even clincal.

I have had the privilege of working with the author in the entire decade-plus that he's been actively learning and integrating TFT into his practice. It has been a life-transforming experience from day one.

It is my hope that the skills taught in this book will find a wide audience among therapists in many disciplines and encourage the use of EvTFT in daily practice. EvTFT can be like magic in its effectiveness in lifting away painful, lifelong blocks in clients' lives.

I have been trained in and have used Thought Field Therapy for many years. Before this ETFT book, I barely understood the background and theory. This book is clearly THE book on the subject. It is dense with information as well as practical methodology. It is to TFT what Francine Shapiro's book is to EMDR. I have read ETFT and continually refer to it to sharpen my practice. THIS IS A "MUST OWN" Text for anyone who wants to deepen the effectiveness of their psychotherapy practice.

Diepold, Britt, and Bender have produced a remarkable addition to the emerging literature of energy psychology. In the first part of the book they introduce the reader to the importance of understanding paradigms as they apply to psychology, and how they must inevitably shift as knowledge accumulates. They then give a solid review of the basics of the meridian system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the procedures of manual muscle testing to assess what is happening energetically in the body. They go on to describe the Touch and Breathe method of balancing meridians (which I have used with great success for several years)--an approach with which every practitioner of energy psychology will want to be familiar. They then present the most detailed explication of system disruption and treatment blocks that is available in the literature. They challenge the reader to understand and experiment with two additional forms of therapy localization (diagnosis)--contact-directed diagnosis using the therapist's own body, and thought-directed diagnosis. New ground is broken with the treatment approach for positive emotions which lead clients to be trapped in destructive compulsions, including addictive behaviors. This is really a break-through for a number of clinical conditions. Their section on supplemental and and modified protocols is well-presented, especially the section on the tratment of dissociative disorders. By no means a cookbook, the authors stress and explain how Evolving Thought Field Therapy is integrated into the overall practice of psychotherapy, and 25 terrific case examples are presented which effectively elucidate their position. The final chapter, Epilogue, and Afterward (by William Tiller, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Stanford University) present challenging and thought-provoking theories as it becomes apparent that the authors are thinking deeply and profoundly about the underpinnings of this most powerful and effective therapy tool.

This is a book that will be appreciated the most by those practitioners who already have some experience with energy psychology and are hungry for refinements in technique, applicability to a greater range of clinical conditions, and deeper understandings of what is going on with this amazing technique.

Where else can you learn why dead fish glow in the dark! Wonderful. Good attention given to my favorite bacteria and the great-grand parent of us all, cyanobacteria. I've seen some of those huge Canadian stromatolites. I also enjoyed the discussion on how bacteria played an important role in the formation of the great iron ore deposits in Michigan and Canada, and why, now that they are largely gone, they will not be easily replaced. And there is so much more...

Excellent even for professional microbiologists

While this book is intended for the general public, and is certainly accessible to those without microbiological training, don't pass it up even if you have microbiological training -- in many ways it is a condensed version of Balows' _The Prokaryotes_, and likewise quite useful for reminding oneself what obscure groups of bacteria do "for a living".

Of course, Dyer's book is a lighter, more amusing read than Balows', and chock full of the sort of anecdote that is fun to slip into a lecture -- such as the explanation of Charles Dickens' cryptic reference to a "bad lobster in a dark cellar" in _The Christmas Carol_, and the fact that the oddly named cyanobacterium _Nostoc_ was named by the alchemist Paracelsus!

In addition, I was pleasantly surprised that despite identifying herself on the very first page as a former student of Lynn Margulis, Dyer doesn't try to defend her mentor's continued rejection of the discoveries of molecular phylogeny, but even goes so far as to praise Woese and Sogin by name! It is refreshing to finally see a work of popular science that acknowledges how the pioneers of molecular phylogeny have changed microbiology over the last couple decades.

At Last: A Guide to Charismatic Microflora!

Betsey Dexter Dyer has written a book in "A Field Guide to Bacteria" that, once it is opened, you wonder why no one has written before. The premise is so obvious that it seems to have been totally overlooked! Location, visual appearance, activity, smell and other characteristics that do not always require a high-powered microscope can be used to identify bacterial colonies! Fortunately the "wait" for such a book (which, until now, we probably did not even know we needed) has been worth it because Dyer has done an excellent job of writing it! In this book she introduces the reader to the teaming microflora of bacteria of earth in a way that cannot help but increase the number of people who appreciate these invisible true owners of the planet.

The huge bacterial flora is well covered and the author's grasp of the multitudinous habitats where bacteria live and thrive, sometimes under the most extreme conditions, is impressive. Everything from sulfur bacteria, halophytes and causes of desert varnish to internal symbionts and more are covered in fascinating detail. Dyer has opened up a whole new way of looking at the world that give us a more accurate view of the pervasiveness of the tiny. Not all bacteria are out to get us by any means and this book provides a much needed balance to the "killer bacteria" usually featured in popular literature.

A necessary book for amateur and even professional microbiologists, it will also, I think, provide a good read for anyone interested in the natural world as it really is.

Brilliant concept, great execution, fun book

Review Date: 2003-06-13
This fun and informative book starts with the brilliant idea of identifying bacteria by their MACROscopic field marks (colors, smells, effects) rather than by microscope. You would never believe how many bacteria one can identify by "field marks" alone, and readers will be surprised at how much fun the identification and discussion of bacteria can be. The author's execution of the guide -- her excellent and enthusiastic writing style and her choices of which bacteria to discuss -- makes this the rare field guide that one can read from cover to cover. The book discusses everything from bacteria in hot springs to those that make cheese or pickles, to those in animal intestines. There are beautiful (yes, beautiful) color plates, great suggested experiments, and guides to finding different kinds of bacteria. The author makes the subject interesting, funny and captivating -- and she uses exclamation points without irony! All in all an excellent book -- don't be scared off by the title; any nature- or science-lover you know will thoroughly enjoy it.

They say that everything in Texas either pricks, bites, or stings, and that isn't COMPLETELY true, but it's close. With this book in hand, you can identify your multi-legged assailant rapidly and accurately and decide whether you need hospitalization and an exterminator or just a Benadryl and a fly swatter. Besides, not all the bugs of Texas are bad bugs--they might still bite and sting, but YOU might not be the target species and the target species might be your enemy: look them up BEFORE you swat.

I was impressed by the overall quality of this book. I wanted an easy-to-use resource book to identify the hundreds of insects I routinely see at my central Texas home, and that's what I got and more! The book was clearly organized with well written description of insects, and in center of book were 63 pages of beautiful, high-quality color photos of the 381 most common insects found in Texas. My only constructive suggestion would be that the "Life Cycle" commentary did not always provide the life expectancy of specific insects.

Every Color User's Essential Book!

Review Date: 2007-03-01
In the age of digital cameras, printouts and projectors, almost everyone needs some introduction to color and color reproduction.

If you are a professional working in color reproduction, there are plenty of books on color engineering and computational color science - those by Phil Green et al, Stephen Westland, William Hunt are all good examples. But Maureen Stone's book has filled a long felt gap at a different level, where you need to understand the fundamentals thoroughly to get the best out of your everyday color reproduction equiptment - your computer monitor, color printer, your digital camera - what have you.

Three features of the book make it stand out: first, the selection of topics within its twelve chapters, second, the accuracy of the technical inforamation, and third the writing style. In fact, I am not sure if there is another book in the market on digital color at this level!

Ms Stone has selected just the right topics for providing a grounding in the issues of color reproduction. Her treatment of the Color Management Systems is probably one of the best at this level that I am familiar with. Color theory is complex. It is a hard-core science from one angle, an art from another angle, and an engineering discipline from yet another. The book has done a good job of summarizing the results precisely and explaining them accurately in a manner that almost anyone with interest in colors can understand.

The free-flowing writing style makes it easy to read - I finished reading through the book in about a week! And, now I keep going back to it off and on, just to confrim (or re-learn) my fundamentals.

The references and annotations to references are very useful.

This is the first book on colors for every computer user, digital camera user, color printer user and for graphics engineers.

"A Field Guide to Digital Color" is an excellent introduction and reference for those who need to know more about color that "it exists" but who do not live and breathe GretagMacbeth color charts.

This book is wonderful for photographers of all levels who own Photoshop or a similar image editing program and are serious about editing their photos and getting things "just right". For amateurs, it serves as an excellent guide for gaining understanding of the key concepts related to how the eye sees color, color mixing systems (additive and subtractive), color matching, perceptive effects that humans eyes have when colors are placed near each other, scanning images, color spaces, printing images, matching color spaces.

Although the book is by no means the answer to specific questions you might have about your situation, it provides references for all of the materials used and you can research a particular subject you need to gain further knowledge of quite easily. It will also help you to develop the terminology necessary to ask the right questions of an expert.

I am an advanced photographer and work with computer graphics (OpenGL) and found this book to be very useful for providing an overview of the entire chain of color from seeing it with our eyes, capturing images, manipulating them on a computer, and then outputting them for our eyes again with a printer, monitor, or other output device.

You are in conversation with an individual you do not know well. All of a sudden she makes a fist, extends the pinkie on one side and the thumb on the other, and wiggles the fist with its extended digits. You are mystified. What do you do? The answer is simple: You pull out the _Field Guide to Gestures: How to Identify and Interpret Virtually Every Gesture Known to Man_ (Quirk Books) by Nancy Armstrong and Melissa Wagner. After all, it is pocket sized and full of pictures, and you always have it with you. You find the photo of the gesture, but you ignore the similar one with the fist elevated and the thumb pointed to the open mouth ("Let's Drink") or the one where the thumb is near the ear and the pinkie is near the mouth ("Call me"). No, the gesture is the "Hang Loose"; your partner in conversation is using a sign associated with Hawaiian surfers, but actually traced to Spanish explorers. The gesture derives from "Let's Drink", but as given without the "bottle" gesture, it has no implications of recreational drug use, just "take it easy". If you are in Japan, however, the gesture might mean "six." There is more information available on this gesture, and on over a hundred others in this funny and interesting book. It doesn't matter that you know most of them already; included here are pointing, nodding, hugging, rolling the eyes, and so on. You can find out the history of the gesture, where it might be misunderstood, and exactly how to make it. You will be surprised at how many gestures you already use and take for granted.

For a sample, look at just a few of the gestures that can be made with the hand in a simple pointing configuration. The index finger extended from the fist is universally understood to mean "look over there". Pointing upwards, it means "one". Elevated and wagged it means "No, no, no..." Slashed across the throat it is an utmost gesture of disapproval. Inserted in and out of the fingers of the other hand, it means, well, you know. Tapping the finger on the side of the nose means "We are sharing a secret." Put to pursed lips, it is "Shhhhh!" even without the sound. Put to the side of the head and rotated it means "crazy". There is a special subtlety to this particular gesture in Japan. It means "crazy" when rotated counterclockwise, but "vain" when clockwise. This distinction, however, the authors note, is fading. Amusingly, as with other field guides, there is a disclaimer at the front of the book to say that it can't list the millions of gestures and meanings, and stressing that it therefore cannot guarantee full reliability. Of particular interest to the naughty will be the large section dealing with gestures of disrespect. If you follow the explicit "1-2-3" directions here, you can perform "The Moon" at someone, for instance. Hand signals saying about the same thing are definitely not omitted from this guide.

For a reference book, I found _Field Guide to Gestures_ to be great fun. Thumbs up.

I'm a sign language interpreter.
I work in Cook County as a Court Interpreter, only one among spoken Language interpreters, Spanish and Polish and all the rest. They think I'm making stuff up when I work.
I say the same thing about them.
When I need to make the point that they already know a bazillion signs, then I haul out this book and show them what I mean. It works every time.
Keeps the focus on the work, not on interpersonal relationships in the workplace.

If you often find yourself scratching your head, shrugging, or furrowing your eyebrows in confusion because of the non-verbal gestures of others, then this book was written expressly for you! 108 gestures are described, illustrated via drawings, and explained in this handy book. The book is well-organized and gestures are divided into common-sense categories: arrival (handshake), departure (waving), approval (high five), disapproval (finger wag), mating (hair flip), offensive and profane (chin flick), just for emphasis (finger snap), and "no words needed" (crossing fingers).

Although most of the gestures are likely to be familiar to most people, some obscure gestures are included as well (e.g., the fig). In addition to this basic information, the authors provide interesting facts about the origins and variations of gestures. For example, making a "W" with your finger to mean "whatever" was popularized by the 1995 movie, "Clueless." Likewise, they note that the thumbing of the nose has more names than any other gesture, including "pull a snook," "japenese fan," and "pull bacon."

The authors also discuss the meanings of the gestures in various cultures. For example, in parts of Greece, nodding means "no" and shaking the head means "yes." Likewise, making horns with you hand can mean that your a rock fan in the U.S., or signify a cuckold in Mediterranean countries!

Fortunately, the authors approach the subject firmly tongue-in-cheek, and I found myself laughing frequently. Each gesture is also illustrated with a color plate, some of which are hilarious, especially the profane ones that are illustrated by an older woman! A terrific, well-researched little book that is most highly recommended.

Sadly, gone are the days of sitting on the front porch and hanging out with your neighbors. This little book is packed with simple yet effective ways to get to know those you wave to as you back out of your driveway every morning, those you chat with at the bus stop and those who live closest to you yet you don't know them and they don't know you! It is set up in short, easy to read one page ideas for creating a caring community, eating together with your neighbors, neighborhood sports and outdoor fun, indoor games and holiday celebrations. My favorite section was the "How to reach out to your neighborhood" section. It is 9 pages jam packed with ideas, encouragement and success stories! And following the inspiration I received reading that section the author didn't leave me hanging but gave me tons of practical ideas on how to make friendship happen with my neighbors!

My family and I live in an area where it is not easy to get to know your neighbors. People tend to stick to themselves and only "socialize" with family (perhaps this sounds familiar to you, too?). This book is packed full of ideas of how to get to know the people who live around you and literally "change your community!" Sometimes it just takes a little book like this to give you the ideas and the courage to break out of your shell and make a difference.

For a small book, this Field Guide is entirely packed from cover to cover with user-friendly, creative ideas! I love the organization of it...divisions of Creating a Caring Environment, Food-Related Outreach, Sports and Outdoor Fun, Indoor Fun and Friendship (including movie nights, complete with discussion questions and more!), and Holidays and Seasonal Celebration! One of my favorites is the "Dinner by Design." Simply pick a theme (a time era, location, or even color!) and have a potluck based on that theme! What a simple, non-threatening way to include more people into your small group, invite neighbors, or include "non-committal" persons! The only struggle I have now is...which idea to try first!
