Gilbert Morris takes you inside the minds of those who have nothing, then gain it all. Or do they? Mr. Morris takes you inside the life of a couple who had only each other and their newspaper and of course her children, but when they strike it rich at a gold mine they begin to lose sight of what's really important. God and Themselves. Do they have to lose all their riches to remember themselves or will it destroy them first?

Besides the blazing guns, there was other life in the West--the Gold and Silver barons. This book shows how the early day miners' lives were changed overnight when they struck a rich vein--and how they reacted to sudden riches. Although the story is fiction, the truth is that it actually happened, over and over again. But how the victims reacted was never the same.

This book takes the reader into the world of a bright, yet mentally ill criminal defendant. It thouroughly explores the problems encountered with questionable criminal competency legal standards as well as the practical courtroom dilemmas that develop when paranoid schizophrenics are found competent to stand trial.

Very Informative

This book is extremely informative regarding both competency to stand trial, as well as the insanity defense. It describes in easy to understand language how the court system handles individuals with mental illness. The two case examples, especially the case of Colin Ferguson, demonstrate how sometimes the courts may not make the right decisions regarding competency questions, and, as such, why mental health practioners are key people in such cases.

A very interesting book. Modern Pirates do exist. Nancy Ferguson tells an interesting story. She knows Scuba Diving and she knows the South Pacific. She has been there and done that. The characters make an interesting group. I went from page to page and chapter to chapter almost without a stop to find out how things would turn out.

This 63-page pamphlet contains five realistic dialogs between subject and coach. I found it quite helpful in understanding how to construct questions that are both challenging and effective in getting to the heart of the matter, in helping people open up. The situations facing the subjects were realistic and typical. Instructive!

A Good Preview of Coaching

I read this book several weeks before I started working with an executive coach. Since coaching was new to me, this book provided a nice preview of what it would be like. It also spurred me on to identify a couple of key issues that I wanted to get some coaching help on. It was easy to read and gave me a good "feel" for coaching.

I had two reasons for buying this book. First I'm a Will Ferguson fan; I've read and loved most of his books and his being listed as co-author was good enough for me. Second, despite being Canadian, I am completely ignorant of ice hockey, which comes mostly from a lack of interest. As a Canadian living abroad, I realize that I have ambassadorial duties regarding the promotion of Canadiana, and ice hockey tops the list of Canadiana must-know items. So since girlfriends are seldom interested in sports (he he he) a book written by a woman for women would logically need to drum up interest in the topic, and this it did for me.

Teene Spencer wrote most of it and presents the history of the game, a basic overview of the rules, a survey of the organization, and lists of the greatest players and teams. Husband and boyfriend Bruce Spencer and family friend Will Ferguson pepper the pages with comments and disputes, most prominent of which is the fight-to-the-death over the Montreal Canadiens.

Good read, and informative if you want to get into hockey.

Like the author, I found myself engaged to a die-hard hockey fan. This book is a great place to start for the newly-initiated hockey girlfriend. It's a quick read, the author's racy innuendos give it a Girls' Night Out tone that's a lot more inviting and easier to relate to than other intro books. The stats and trivia are great, but will need to be updated eventually. Nice to see coverage of women's hockey, too.
PS - the bit about defensemen on page 19 is totally true ;).

Normally Regency type romances are one's I dodge because of the
weak nature ascribed to lead heroines. But this story was remarkably different. Angela is a working gal who is apt could
dance with the best of them in any period...and her joust with
the Duke and Justin truly makes this a wonderful romance. Easy paced story, nothing too dramatic, great for summer beach enjoyment or just curling up for a cozy step away...

quite a fun read

"A Guardian's Angel" is a rather enjoyable read and boasts of a plot involving a rather beautiful, sensible and intelligent companion (Angela Needham), a trio a charming youngsters, and two noblemen who are enemies and neighbours.

Angela Needham has been hired by the Duke of Oslington to help prepare his ward, Leonia Sutton for her London debut. And while the duke proves to be distant and austere, his wards (Leonia and her brother, Thomas, and younger sister, Esther) prove to be warm, friendly and quite charming. In no time at all, Angela finds herself becoming deeply involved in the lives of the Sutton siblings, especially so when it turns out that Thomas has been sneaking off to spend time with the duke's neighbour and enemy, Lord Harrington, who to Angela's surprise turns out to be completely charming and attractive. She discovers that there is some kind of disagreement between the two men who were once close friends, but neither will talk about their falling out. And the more time she spends with Lord Harrington, the more deeply Angela finds herself falling for him. But the duke has demanded that she have nothing to do with him. What can a poor companion do when her employer decrees that she ignore the promptings of her heart?

On the whole this was a rather well written novel that also has the advantage of possessing a rather intelligent and sensible heroine as well. I had only two problems with this novel: 1) Angela and Lord Harrington begin to address each other by their first names soon after their initial meeting. This is really not in concordance with the manners of the period. And 2) the manner in which the duke's character was developed. The duke's character sort of swung between being a domestic tyrant and being quite heroic and intelligent. I rather liked the duke (in fact I liked him quite a bit better than I did Lord Harington) and sympathised with the problems he faced, but even I was dismayed at quite a few of the duke's decisions and actions.

"A Guardian's Angel" is quite an engrossing read that, I think, should generate quite a bit of fun -- the plot and characters are engaging (even if the ending and Lord Harrington's conversion to good sense was extremely convenient), and except for the two niggling points I raised, was quite an enjoyable read.

Description from the book back cover:

During Jesus' earthly ministry He often led His disciples to a quiet place in order to teach them the foundational issues of faith, key lessons in life, and so that they could simply "be together." Now there's a way for you to share those same lessons with your children while leading them on a journey toward an intimate relationship with the Savior - and with one another. It's called 'Intimate Family Moments: Lessons From Galilee'. Using Scripture, Bible dramas, discussion starters, and activities, you can experience biblical principles together as a family. Make it a part of your family night, home devotions, family Bible study -or any other time your family gets together for fun and sharing. The lessons are fun, easy to do, and there is something for kids of all ages. If you want a book filled with calm, low-key activities that teach kids how to behave more properly, you may want to keep looking. But if what you really want are creative ways to engage your children and teens in discussions about scriptural principles, then you've picked up the right book!

This book is chocked full of great teaching and activity ideas based on the great commandment. It's life changing! It's profound!

I've had this book for several years and it's been a wellspring of life to our family. It combines great teaching about loving God and neighbor with the practical interactions of family resulting in greater intimacy and joy. Our family has not been the same and neither has my marriage.

This is the only serious sociological study in Urban Latin America. Unfortunately is outdated. Too many things have happened in Latin America since 1998. A newer edition would be nice.

Alan Gilbert's "The Latin American City" is a wonderful introduction to urbanization in Latin America. The chapter set-up and structure makes it easy to find information. The information and statistics included are relevant and helpful in understanding the problems of urbanization in these third world countries. The main fault I find with this text, is that it lacks a personal connection to the issues. Perhaps more sidebar stories, or vinyettes, would achieve a personal connection to the issues.
