A wonderful pocket guide to philately. Includes a list of tools, descriptions of separations and watermarks, a glossary of terms, information about stamp identification including examples of written words/letters/ideographs relevant to stamp collecting from different countries, and illustrations of stamps from different countries.

From the back cover:

???DO YOU KNOW???
what "A.M.G." means? Or "Charity Stamp"? Or "Lozenge Roulette"? Do you know the use of stamp hinges or a perforation gauge? Can you identify stamps that bear the words "Boyaca," or "Cabo Jubi," or "Milliemes," or any of hundreds of others? ...

Obviously not the latest word in the field, having been published in 1967, but pretty extensive for its size.

As mentioned in an earlier review, "Basil Lubbock (1876-1944) was a man of the sea who wrote many fine books about ships of the 19th Century" and this is just another example of his excellent work. If you are interested in that period when sailing ships worked for a living, then Lubbock's work is the key which unlocks a veritable treasure chest of knowledge and information.

The word "Colonial" in the title may be a reference to the British Empire and her colonies, but the ships described travelled to almost all corners of the globe in order to deliver and collect whatever cargoes they were assigned.

There are two ingredients I like best about Lubbock's work; Firstly, he dedicates all his books to those seafarers which made his work possible. In this case the dedication reads; "Dedicated to all those who learnt the art of the sea so thoroughly and practised it so skilfully aboard the Colonial Clippers." Before I mention that second element I favour so strongly, I would like to remind the reader of the fact that Basil Lubbock was born to wealthy parents, was educated at Eton and later won the Military Cross during the First World War (1914-1918). He could, therefore, have chosen any of the accepted "gentlemen's" occupations such as, for example, medicine, armed forces or business. Instead, he signed on as an ordinary seaman on a four-masted barque and rounded the horn before the mast. For me, that says a great deal about the man. That second quality, however, is his own personal research which is the mainstay of all his books. This author travelled far and wide and spoke with a great many fellow seamen in order to write this book. Then he did it all over again with his next book - and so the process continued.

It is only through the work of Basil Lubbock - and he has few equals on this subject, that the true stories of the famous sailing ships of the 19th Century are told. This book deals with the Colonial Clipper ships, other titles deal with Opium Clippers, Nitrate Clippers, China Clippers and so forth.

They are excellent books and I only wish I had the full set. The historic pictures of once great ships add an extra dimension which, when combined to Lubbock's narrative, bring the whole subject to life.

This book was first published 60 or more years ago, but the information contained is still just as useful today. I've had this book for several years now, & I refer to it many times. The information covers not just the vegetable garden, but everything in the yard & all things related to the care & feeding of it. If one can only have one gardening book, this one would be the one to choose.

Although this book is older, it is the most comprehensive book I have found on gardening. It covers many topics that normally you would have to purchase multiple books to find. If you are new to gardening this is a great book to start with.

This wonderfully illustrated book will stimulate your imagination and make you want to roll up your sleeves and get gardening. For anyone who wants to expand the living space in your house to the outside, it will help you understand the potential that is there, just waiting to be transformed. You will be able to design and plan any work to make your property beautiful and enjoyable, therefore more livable. It has the best lists of flowers, broken down into easy to understand catagories including: annuals, perennials and biennials, colors, height, time of bloom, soil requirements, etc. I have read this book every year for over 20 years and consider it the best book for gardening. Just ignore the outdated information on dangerous chemicals and you are on your way to having a wonderful, organic flower and vegetable garden. One that you can be proud of and enjoy in all seasons. If I had one book to pick on gardening, this one is it

Ferguson Publishing's new Discovering Careers For Your Future: Computers is the latest entry in a truly excellent, "reader friendly" children's series: "Discovering Careers for Your Future". Three other volumes in this fine collection deal with careers in Art (0894343882), Constructions (0894343904), and History (0894343912). This particular volume focuses on careers involving computers - and in today's age, nearly every well-paying task requires at least a passing familiarity with a word processing program! Featuring 20 computer-intensive careers, with complete job descriptions, including salary ranges, job outlook, and educational requirements, Discovering Careers For Your Future: Computers shows all and tells all for inquiring young minds. The entire series is very highly recommended for students grades 3 through 6.

First, I have to state that I like the majority of what Jo Ann Ferguson writes. This book was a great escape. The characters were lively and interesting. I especially liked the character of "Count" Natalya Dmitrieff. Even though she was dressed like a male Russian officer she still battled with just wanting to be a woman, but she never let that get in the way of fulfilling her duty as an officer. The chemistry between her and Lord Ashcroft was great to follow. This is the kind of book that you wouln't mind reading again.
