I really like this book. It has a lot of basic ingredients so you don't have to go buy a ton of new things. It is all whole nuts and seeds which I LOVE. It is so much healthier then refined flours. It is very straight forward and easy to follow. You do need a food processor and possibly a food dehydrator. But the recipes are yummy and super easy to make. It is a great resource for me because my son is allergic to EVERYTHING! I will be buying her other one!

This is the perfect cook book for anyone who has suffered from food allergies. The recipes are very tasty and easy enough to make at home. I would strongly recommend this book to those who don't want to give up flavor and good tasting food just because they need to accomodate an allergen-free diet. Kudos to Ms. Fergus for a wonderful and much needed alternative cook book!

The quieter, wilder alternatives to busy state parks
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-26
The landscape of Pennsylvania has endured such intensive logging, mining, and urbanization over the years that it's a wonder any wild places still exist within its borders. But they do, and Charles Fergus has hiked in all 61 of them. The natural areas he's talking about here are located in state forests and have few recreational amenities, so they're open only to foot traffic. Habitats range from the tidal waters around Little Tinicum Island in the Delaware River to the forested crest and tower at the top of Mount Davis in Somerset County, the highest point in the Commonwealth. Many of these areas gained governmental protection within our lifetime, and I'm sure other natives will learn about sites they never heard of before. Basic road atlases don't usually acknowledge these places. Fergus provides detailed directions for access, writes about the uniqueness of each site, and recommends the best seasons for visits. His commentary is accompanied by black and white photos and may include smatterings of geology, history, anthropology, botany, and zoology. Wildlife ranges from bears and bobcats to salamanders and the tiny critters they feast on. There are bird migration routes, sites for butterfly aficionados, many tall trees and rare plants. A path falls onto land where chips of indigenous tools can still be found, and another turns onto a trail made more recently by an illegal all-terrain vehicle. A map, list of resources, and list of forestry addresses contribute to the usefulness of this guide. Scanning just a few pages will have you reaching for your boots and daypack in no time.

Well Off the Beaten Path in PA

This is a very enjoyable and informative guide to the 61 natural areas in Pennsylvania, which are usually far from the beaten path of the cities, major highways, and even well-known hiking trails. Fergus spent a whole year personally exploring every one of these areas, and proves it with his first-hand descriptions. Therefore this book is based on real experience, and was not written by someone who has never been to the places they're writing about (such as the error-prone Longstreet Highroad Guide to the Pennsylvania Mountains, which I can't totally recommend). As an extensive hiker in PA myself, I've been to some of these natural areas and can attest to Fergus' accuracy. He focuses on the flora, fauna, and topography of these natural areas, and tips on how to get to the more remote ones that may not even be accessible by trail, all in lively prose that walks the fine line between poetic and overly sentimental. Fergus tends to avoid the bad news on some of these areas, especially pollution, which would make the chapters on Little Tinicum Island (near Philly) and Sheets Island Archipelago (almost within sight of Three Mile Island) more informative; plus the complete absence of maps is a problem for the larger natural areas. But still, this book greatly succeeds in making the outdoorsy Pennsylvania fan yearn to visit these hidden secrets.

This is mandatory reading for any student in fields related to memory. Probably due for an update soon though, and not really suitable for the simply curious (for that see Dan Schacter's and Alan Baddeley's books).

Fantastic resource!

This is one of the most complete resources I've ever seen in an area that has rapidly grown in many directions. Tulving and Craik have done a marvelous job of pulling together this diverse field in a clear, concise, yet thorough manner! I would highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in the field of memory research.

Outstanding book filled with lessons about hunting..and life

In A Rough Shooting Dog, Charles Fergus made me think: about nature, about hunting, about dogs, about birth and death and the cycles of life. Most importantly, he reminded me of the simple joy I had as a child when I experienced the sights, sounds and smells of nature. Thanks, Charles, I'm about to hit 40......and I had almost forgotten.

A book for the THINKING bird dog person.

Those of us who hunt over dogs love our dogs. Few of us can articulate that love as well as Mr. Fergus has done in this book. Gracefully written, sensitive, honest, and plainly passionate, this is a book you'll want to read slowly. To read it quickly would only mean coming to its end too soon. A keeper.

Very wry, very funny, and very educational, this tabloid newspaper-style book follows the story of early man from the missing link to about 3,000 B.C. Great fun for adults as well as children. Highly recommended.

An educational and very funny read. The facts are all true, but have been presented in a consistely funny and readable tabloid style. Maps, pictures, and fact boxes (and some very funny ads) support the text. Highly recommended.

Great Perspective

Fergus Kerr gives us a very much needed overview of twentieth century Catholic theology both before and after Vatican II. It is especially needed because too many, on both the theological "left" and "right," tend to distort the state of the Church at the time of Vatican II. On the one hand, theological liberals often tend to view the state of the Church as dire just before Vatican II. On the other hand, some theological traditionalists tend to view the Church just before Vatican II as being a utopia. Neither caricature is accurate. Kerr gives us the balance that comes from seeking out history, instead of making it up for ideological reasons. Especially good is Kerr's treatment of the great French theologians who were intent on the reform of the Church before Vatican II.

A Very Important Book

FYI, great description, but not as useful for field identification
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-20
Just so buyers know beforehand, this is a great, descriptive book. However, it is best used as a supplement to field identification guides, as this one contains only drawings that, although well-drawn, are black and white and are not included for every species. Still a great resource though!

Pleasantly surprised.

Turning my photographic endeavors more toi nature, I decided to start doing my homework, so that I better understand the wildlife in my area.

I must say that I thought there would be photos, but I found illustrations instead. But hey are excellent, although not every animal variation is shown. The author goes into amzing descriptive detail - much more than I expected.

Whether you are a nature photographer in the Maryland area, nature enthusiast, or student, this book is a steal at less than $15!

These books center around the special friendship of Fergus the Dog and Lady the Cat, who find that friendship is more than skin deep. We hope that with the use of visual aids and application questions at the end of each book, which tackle issues such as compassion, friendship, sharing, telling the truth, respect, and integrity will help parents teach their children priceless values!

I wrote the book Baglien's Partisans in 1981. It chronicles the 1957 Fergus Falls, Minn., high school boys basketball team that went 27-1 and took third place in the state boys basketball tournament at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. The team was coached by Duane Baglien who later coached at Edina in the Twins Cities and led his teams to three consecutive state titles in 1966, 1967 and 1968. This is one of the best architectural dictionaries that I have found. It has a number of layman terms and quite a few diagrams. It is concise, but contained all of the terms that we have come up with so far.
