If you want something that is a GOOD READ, but full of really useful information and advice about how to really get things done in the pressured work environment of today, Crisis in Santa's Workshop is a book you'll want to own.

All the way through I was following a manager, a lot like me: conscientious but overwhelmed, knowing he had a huge job to do (what could be more pressure and time sensitive than toys going out in time for Christmas?), and now being able to just do it all himself. I had to keep reading to find out what he was going to do. I'd like my whole work team to read this book.

This book is a follow- up to Managers as Facilitators, a book I very much enjoyed, but done in a fun business fable format. Good book!

I have been looking for a book that will convince my organization to include more people in making important decisions and put an end to unproductive power struggles. This is it! My thanks to the authors. I am looking forward to applying their facilitation process in my work. I intend to give this book to every member of my team.

Hardboiled New Orleans
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-20
This is New Orleans, nicely hardboiled, a very noir story. Bob Skinner is such a fine mystorical writer (historical mystery for those unfamiliar) reading his books is like taking a time machine back to the 1930s when men were men and to be avoided. Wesley Farrell is a finely tuned Chandleresque hero . . . "Some knew him by sight; others saw the way he moved and the way his eyes roved over them, like the sights on a gun, and looked away quickly."

And the women in the book are not to be taken lightly. What more can you say about a woman who, " . . . was enough to make a Baptist minister drink swamp water, crawl inside a hollow log, and bay at the moon."?

DADDY'S GONE A-HUNTING is a well crafted crime novel. Do yourself a favor and take a ride along the dark, forbidding streets of the city that care forgot. It's worth the ride.

Another great Wes Farrell historical mystery

Review Date: 1998-12-06

In 1938 New Orleans, Creole Wesley Farrell continues to pass himself off as a white. However, his attitude comes into question when he meets black nightclub owner Carol Donovan. Finding himself very attracted to Carol, Wesley empathically listens to her plea that hired muscle Archie Badeaux is putting pressure on her.

At about the same time, just released from prison after spending the last decade behind bars, Ernie LeDoux plans to locate and spend his share of the money he stole from a Brinks truck. As Wesley looks into Carol's complaint, black businessmen are suddenly being killed. All of the deceased are linked to a worthless piece of property. Wes is unaware that the three distinct scenarios tie together with him being caught in the middle.

DADDY'S GONE A-HUNTING, the third Wes Farrell historical mystery, is a wonderful period piece that will exhilarate fans of the sub-genre. Wes remains a fabulous character and the support cast provides needed authenticity and propellant to keep the story line moving forward. Wesley seems a bit out of characters, especially for readers of the first two novels. However, late thirties New Orleans comes across as if a time machine whisked the reader to the right time and place. Robert Skinner continues to be a leading light, casting a mega-luminesce on the sleuthing fictional world.

Rose's uneven journey from darkest night to brightest day, and a community's inability to readily forgive an injured or repentant soul, whether Rose or the rich and irresponsible Bill Bayno; struck me as true to life -- and, as I see it, part of that necessary test we all must endure in mortality.

I found myself often weeping and later cheering right along side Rose. I hurt with those she caused to suffer; and prayed for those who ought to have helped her. I felt love in my heart as she disovered she could love once again.

From a literary standpoint, the author's language tends to sing throughout; and from a moral or religious standpoint, the book strengthened my faith in God and envoked moments of frequent reflection.

A wonderful novel!

Mission to Mars, testing water quality in the lakes of Ireland, and bringing the internet to remote sub-Saharan villages all have something in common. They are all examples of networking in extreme environments that overwhelm traditional technology and require new communications solutions. Delay and disruption networking (DTN) is an up-and-coming technology that enables networking in extreme environments. This complete reference on DTN covers applications requirements, DTN protocols, and network implementation. Thoroughly examining the causes of delay and disruption, the book shows how to engineer a robust network that can survive the harshest conditions. DTN is a popular solution for extreme sensor applications, and this cutting-edge resource explores all the issues, including power management, related to DTN and sensor networking. In addition to providing practical insights and case studies, the book also looks at routing, custody in practice, and security in DTN. Stephen Farrell is a research fellow in the Dept of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering and member of the Distributed Systems Group of the Dept of Computer Science at Trinity College Dublin.

Communications in Harsh Environments

TCP/IP has become so prevalent a transmission protocol, that the assumption that this is all that is needed becomes almost accepted as fact. Yet, there are problems. To mention just one,TCP has a built in time out factor of two minutes so that if no data is sent in two minutes the circuit is shut down. If you are trying to communicate with a space craft that's more than two minutes away communications will never be estblished.

As a result of this and several other problems, JPL began to devise a new communications protocol to specially handled these kinds of problem areas. The result is the InterPlanetory Networn, or IPN.

With more experience in using IPN, several other applications have emerged, i.e. military battlefield sensors, arctic lake pollution monitoring where the sensor is visited once a year, and many others.

This book describes the structure and design of delay and disruption tolerant networks to a depth that the organization needing such capabilities could build one.

I would first of all like to thank Robbie in Scotland and Maje from America for sending in their thoughts on the story. It is appreciated very, very much. Thank you. I'm so glad you like the story and that you feel involved when reading it. I wanted the story to draw children into the feeling of what it is like to fly and for the story itself to be a story of encouragement for children (and grown-ups!)to hold on to that magic, throughout
life.
Yours sincerely,

This is a very, very interesting and good book, because there are so many details in it. There are lots of words that make you feel you are in the story. They are words like magnificent and ice blue.
The story is also good because first everyone is happy and then you kind of think the story is done but then it goes on. I think it took very much effort to write that story.

I recently received this book and read it quite thoroughly. I was very much impressed. Most books on the subject are extremely expensive or unobtainable. And when I saw the book I was surprised by its slimness. But Farrell manages to cover the topic with surprising completeness, describing all the most important systems, giving illustrations of ballots, explanations of the counting procedure in complex systems, and generally doing a complete job.

While I have also recently read Douglas Amy's "Real Choices, New Voices," and was favorably impressed by the explanations in Amy's book, Amy's goal was to sell one particular class of voting system: proportional representation. Therefore Amy minimizes the disadvantages of PR and emphasizes its advantages. While Farrell has his favorite system (and it is one of Amy's preferred systems, as well as one I like), he only mentions it near the very end; Farrell's book is much more impartial and leaves it to the reader to evaluate the various electoral systems, an approach that I prefer.

I very much recommend this book.

It's a good "first stop" for anyone needing an analytical overview of the election systems of the democratic world.

"The Home Creamery" could've been featured and recommended for library acquisition in our 'Food and Wine' section, but is also of immense interest and value for its broader interest to any rural homeowner seeking to create a 'home creamery' environment by making butter, yogurt, source cream ricotta and more. A commercial kitchen isn't necessary to produce these or fresh buttermilk or cram cheese: instructions tell how to turn fresh milk and cream into cultured dairy products and offer accompanying instruction on using them in other recipes. Both cookbook and rural homeowner's libraries will find it a popular lend.

In his book 'I Have To Hurt You' Victor Farrell shows very good reason why people should not delve into areas of the paranormal that they are not completely familiar with!
There really are "more things in heaven and earth" and some of them are dangerous as hell! Mr. Farrell proves that by allowing a familiar, out-of-body, female entity to enter his life, only to become a victim at the mercy of a demonic fiend, which made his life a living nightmare!
There are succubus type entities, as depicted by the one in his book, just waiting for the foolhardy to open the door a crack. The story is well written. Read it and be warned!
Personally, I couldn't put the book down.

The best terrifying true story I've read in a long time!

Reading this horrifying tale lived by the writer was a whole new experience for me. He was attacked by an astral entity over and over in many lude and disgusting ways, and almost lost his life to it in the years of struggle to be free of it. The scary thing is, this could happen to anyone at all, if they invite such a thing into their lives, even though it may seem friendly and benign in the beginning. Reading this book, I never will

Review by Kinetoplastid Biology and Disease
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-06
This book is a useful reference for researchers, especially for updated information presented in table form for Leishmania spp. (pp. 3 and 14-6), sand fly vectors (pp. 34-5) and regimens of chemotherapy (pp. 135-6). Authors were well-chosen to introduce the topics of their own research presented in 11 chapters (~15 pages each). Most chapters are, by necessity, focused largely on the authors' own work or views due apparently to page limitation. This is adequate and even desirable for frequently reviewed subjects, such as sand fly biology by Killick-Kendrick; or a relatively specific or new topic, which is naturally so or made so by the authors' skills, such as membrane transport by Landfear and Leishmania infection on macrophage function by Matlashewski. These chapters are thus probably most friendly to the general reader. The same can be said to a greater or lesser extent for chapters on macrophage receptors for Leishmania by Mosser and Brittingham, chemotherapy of leishmanasis by Zilberstein and Ephros, and Leishmania-sand fly interactions by Kamhawi. The space allocated is clearly insufficient to account for all necessary details, diversities and unknowns in the epidemiology of human and canine leishmaniasis, as presented by Dedet, Shaw and Campino as well as for the complexities and uncertainties in the immunobiology of leishmaniasis by Kaye, Farrell and Campos-Neto. These chapters will undoubtedly be appreciated by the specialists, but may not be by general readers who have little or no prior exposure to the caveat or nuance of Leishmania epidemiology and immunology. An exception to this may be the chapter by Campos-Neto on vaccines, since this is an area of great interest, and since some data from work in progress were presented. The book would be improved with the addition of another chapter or two on cell and molecular biology of Leishmania to discuss, for example, some exciting discoveries and development, e. g. unique cell organelles (e. g. tubular lysosomes, acidocalcisomes), glycobiology, gene expression, genome project, molecular genetics, kinetoplast RNA editing. Some of these topics are trypanosomatid-, but not necessarily Leishmania-specific. Still, our knowledge of how parasites and hosts work at cellular and molecular levels is crucial in our attempt to understand their interactions that makes leishmaniasis so unique in all aspects from epidemiology to immunobiology. There is high hope to render these biological phenotypes less descriptive and more clearly defined by genomic, proteomic, glyconomic, metabolomic and other bioinformatic approaches.

There are several non-scientific distractions. There appears to be no copy-editing work, resulting in too many incomplete literature citations (four in pp. 147-50), and many typographic errors in the text, including two in the Preface. The Index is too brief and chapters are illustrated with very few diagrams and no photographs. These deficiencies are possibly due to a desire for rapid publication to keep chapters current and/or to cost-cutting measures established by the publisher.

Nevertheless, many readers will find interesting thoughts and insights from their own perspectives in many chapters of this book, including this reviewer with decades of exposure to Leishmania and leishmaniasis. I find Shaw's historical view on this disease in the Amazon region interesting, as described in his chapter on South American leishmaniasis. His writing on the separation of subgenous Leihsmania and Viannia clarifies some confusion of our own experimental data. It is also interesting that PKDL is thought to result from the targeting of effector function against parasites in the skin of patients recovering from VL after chemotherapy, as stated by Kaye citing the work of Theander's group. These are just several examples of my own deficiencies rectified by reading this book. Other readers will find specific points of interest according to their own backgrounds and knowledge.

The editor and serial editors deserve our appreciation and congratulations for their successful endeavour by putting this volume together for publication. There has been no hard cover book devoted to Leishmania since the late 1980's. This book may well be the last one of this kind, since in this era of information highway, the next book on Leishmania and leishmaniasis is likely to be electronically digitized for sale in the website. I will make sure to keep my copy around and urge you all to rush order a copy before it is sold.

This volume provides an overdue, well-needed and succinct update on the clinical, epidemiological, ecological and basic science aspects (immunology, pathophysiology, drug resistance and metabolism) of leishmaniasis by experts in the field. Leishmaniasis is widely distributed throughout the world; the disease threatens 350 million people in 88 countries world-wide. However, not since the Chang and Bray and/or Killick-Kendrick and Peters volumes published approximately 25 years ago has there been a monograph published providing a current and complete overview of the field. This has been to the detriment of those who teach parasitology or to anyone entering this field. Comprehensive reviews suitable as readings for advanced undergraduate or graduate students are rare. Further, most reviews are highly focused and specialized to the exclusion of providing a general biological overview. In a quickly evolving field, such as leishmaniasis, this is understandable; however, it is to the credit of Dr. Farrell (who edited this volume) that this deficiency has been filled. Each chapter is succinct, yet covers an important aspect of the biology, ecology. epidemiology or clinical disease; references provided are particularly useful.

Leishmaniasis is a spectrum of diseases ranging from the cutaneous, to visceral; the diverse clinical forms of disease are caused by multiple species, with different reservoir hosts and insect vectors. Hence, there is considerable complexity in the biology to be understood, as indicated by the first four chapters by Drs. Dedet, Shaw, Killick-Kendrick and Campino. The first four chapters provide an overview of the epidemiology of this spectrum of diseases and include reviews of the ecology of New World leishmaniasis, biology of phlebotomine sand flies (insect vector), and epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis. The next chapters focus on topics devoted to understanding the biology of the host-parasite and vector-parasite interactions. The chapter by Dr. Kamhawi on the Leishmania parasites within the digestive tract of phlebotomine sand flies summarizes important aspects relevant to parasite transmission, namely, the relationship of LPG to parasite vector-midgut association as well as the effect of salivary components on the transmission of disease. The interactions of the parasite with the macrophage are covered in the next two chapters. The immunological consequences of receptor-ligand interactions (CR3, FcR, CR1) utilized in parasite uptake in terms of the establishment and maintenance of infection are presented (Drs. Mosser and Brittingham). This section discusses the differences between the promastigotes (seen only in the initiation of infection) and amastigote (found during chronic infection in the mammalian host) developmental stages in these processes. The effect of infection on the function of macrophages is relevant to immunology (as macrophages are important antigen-presenting cells). The parasite clearly causes impairment in the signal transduction pathways utilized for macrophage activation by various cytokines and chemokines; hence, these signal transduction pathways may represent potential chemotherapeutic targets. This topic is discussed in the chapter by Dr. Matlashewski. The chapter by Drs. Zilberstein and Ephros covers chemotherapy, and reviews existing therapies, and discusses what is currently known about the mode of drug action and mechanisms of drug resistance. The last three chapters (Drs. Kaye, Farrell, and Campos-Neto) are focused on what is known concerning the immune response to leishmanial infection - our understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis as well as recent progress towards the development of vaccine against cutaneous leishmaniasis. Concise, these provide a thoughtful overview of what has been determined about immune mechanisms that control infection. The chapter on cutaneous leishmaniasis is appropriately focused on Leishmania major, which has been the mainstay of immunological studies. However, given the distinctions found for New World Leishmania (L. mexicana complex) from L. major, additional information concerning this aspect would have provided a more complete picture of the diversity of pathogenesis. The fact that we need to know more about the human immune response to infection is underscored in these chapters and the important advances made in the past decade concerning the immunological features of visceral and cutaneous diseases are clearly presented. In short, "World Class Parasites: LEISHMANIA" provides a long overdue concise, yet comprehensive current overview of the leishmaniases - what has been learnt over the past 25 years - and what remains to be understood about this interesting genus of parasitic protozoans!

Following publication of this book, Farrell was lauded as "The Gloria Steinem of Male Liberation" by media and popculture outlets.

This was not overly enthusiastic labeling because Farrell followed through on his words and was an active participant in the revitalizing feminist movement. He was an active member of NOW (becoming one of the first men elected to the National board) and did regular media appearances with other famous male feminists of the day such as Alan Alda and Phill Donahue to encourage equality.

This book is rightfully described as the male eqivalent of the "Feminine Mystique" because it both crtiiques gender roles using a mix of interviews and social statistics..and contains resources for action. This book maintains male chauvinism and anti-feminism also hurt men by constricting them into gender roles that are one-dimensional and narrow instead of allowing them to be multifaceted sensitive individuals.

Although Farrell has since sadly abandoned his own work, this tome remains an important text for feminist theory. Even if much of the social stats are now outdated, the concept of openly encouraging male feminism enmasse remains radical and inspiring to this day.
