Great writing, good ideas - best quick read in public health

There have been a number of recent books about health habits and the environment, but this is by far the most enjoyable read. The writing is outstanding and not the clunky prose you often encounter in books written by academics - I wish I could write like them. Although written for a general audience, with (good) human interest anecdotes, the book nevertheless covers some deeper ideas, such as "curve shifting". The idea is that how often we encounter extreme outcomes, whether severe obesity, alcoholism, HIV, depends on "normal" or average behavior in the population. The early chapters that elaborate on those ideas alone are worth reading the book. I don't care too much about "passionate advocacy" and while the authors do fall into the advocacy camp, there is very little of the whining or scolding that has turned me off in other related books. Instead, arguments are generally well balanced even if you know on which side the authors are going to come down. It made a great read for a long flight.

The Prison Epistles by Archpriest Lawrence R. Farley (currently pastor of St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Mission OCA in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) is a informative reading and extensive commentary on the letters that the Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon while he was shackled in a Roman prison. Especially recommended for the non-specialist general reader seeking a better understanding of this New Testament material, The Prison Epistles offers a literal translation from the original Greek, as well as section-by-section analysis. Presented with both devotional and exegetical emphasis, The Prison Epistles is a superb and thought-expanding resource for studying Paul's profound and moving words.

I really liked this book and I am very interested on what happens next. I just wish Satan could maybe learn to love Alec like the black has done. I know Satan can learn to love... I never would think he would actually be a Killer. I knew he would learn and maybe if there is a next book... he will learn to love Alec.

I enjoy reading about Edgar Cayce and have tried to make sense out of his numerous readings, however, the King James English often takes from the readings making them hard to understand. Mr. Farley's book has been a gift from above for me. I now really enjoy reading the Cayce readings. I was actually hoping it came in hard back so I could have a good copy to keep and the paper one to mark up and underline. But alast it is out of print.

SHOCK is back with a bang!!!!!

These three authors have put together another book filled with obscure horror movie reviews with films they watch in a non-stop movie marathon. In their past books they based their work on a single movie marathon. This time, they treat their readers to TWO of their own viewing festivals which results in a thick work loaded with reviews of movies you most likely never heard of! If you like horror movies but not the "popcorn" ones (like Scream, for example), you will have an interest in this book and their others.

All of authors grace the movie reviews with their own touch of humor which makes this book a fun read. It's funniest moments are also included in the multiple essays they write to accompany the movie reviews. The horror flicks in their books aren't films you can go to the local Blockbuster to rent. You have to really hunt for these titles and their stories reflect that. These guys apparently have to scout out little mom and pop stores to find these titles and the lengths they through to get them are hysterical. They have a passion for horror movies and their writings reflect that.

This book is for you if you are a horror movie fan and you want to find things out about some movies you not only haven't seen, but probably haven't heard of.

Multicultural Introduction to Sociology

I have used Ferrante's text now in my introductory sociology classes for over five years. In its 4th ed., the text has been greatly recieved in all my classes. What is so different about the text is that it has an international and multicultural perspective. While examining the same concepts found in most introductory texts, Ferrante's work explores them within a wider, international context, all the while providing a comparative look at American society. Each chapter takes the reader to a different part of the globe, providing both excellent historical and contemporary examples. Most importantly (especially for my students), the text allows the instructor to introduce sociology and diversity at the same time. Not only timely, but imperative in this emerging global, postmodern era. You'll get a lot of miles out of this one!

A Heritage Lost (book's subtitle)

It was serendipity that connected me to this book, found in a library used-books sale. It is an unusual book, especially in today's world, being in black & white (photographs, by John de Visser) and devoid of pagination(!?). It's about 200 pp, glossy, alternating sections of text and associated photographs which are without the explanation (or intrusion) of captions--both are quite good. One entry in the Amazon information listing puzzles me: an apparent indication of Reading ages "9 - 12" ?! This is NOT a child's book, by any means (I'm not sure how well readers in that age would do with it). For the nature of the book, I can do no better than to briefly quote the author and one of his Newfoundland subjects, respectively:

"When John de Visser and I resolved on the making of this book, we had in mind a mutual endeavour in which one art would complement the other [verbal/visual] in tenderly portraying the lineamnets of a world we loved. This book was to have been our celebration of the closed universe of sea and rock, plants and beasts, wind and fog that occcupies the primordial coasts of southern Newfoundland. But we particularly wished to celebrate the qualities of the people of that coast. They are the Antaean people, adamantine, indomitable, and profoundly certain of themselves. They are a natural people who have not lost, as we have lost, consciousness of unity with the natural world around them. ... But this was an illusion. ... We had not long been about our task when we began to recognize the change, and began to understand that our account was being transmuted, without our volition, into a requiem. We who had come to chronical human life in its most admirable guise remained to witness and record the passing of a people. ..." [Farley Mowat, from the Foreward]

[one "outport" man] "It's been fine you came to visit us. I hopes your 'snaps' turns out just what you was after, and that you'll make a good voyage out of them -- a prosperous voyage, you know. But still and all, I'm wondering could you, maybe, do one thing for we? Could you, do you think, say how it was with us? We wouldn't want it thought, you understand, that we never tried the hardest as was in us to make a go of things. We'd like for everyone to know we never would have left the places we was reared, but ... we ... was ... drove!" [sic]

And so one has a beautiful testament to the strength and genuiness of a people slowly forced from their once demanding but vital existence, by government policies, into "civilized society", such as it was circa 1960s.

Human folly and courage portrayed in a brillant collection !

I had never read anything about the Arctic before but Mowat's fascinating collection of stories is one of the most interesting series I have read. Pulling up the quilt on a cold Vermont night I was transported to the distant Arctic and the life and death struggles of fools and heroes. Ultimately though the hero of the tale is the Arctic itself and the obvious love Mowat has for it. It left me scrambling for more on the subject and deluging local libraries for requests of obscure commentaries and stories from the turn of the century and before. What a treat !
