The ultimate guide for identification?

I was a little disappointed when I finally got my copy, since I expected more based on the ads and the book's price. I can recommend this book for those collectors who want to have ALL the nice bird books, but a non-European would find it way too heavy to carry in the field, and citizens of almost every European country would find outdated (i.e 10 years old) information on the distribution of several species. Even the country boundaries are representing pre-1990 status in the Eastern part of Europe (Czechoslovakia does not exist as one country any more etc.). While two thumbs down for the distribution maps, the text is OK (although not free of mistakes, either) and the pictures range from mediocre to very good. If you are on a tight budget buy only Svensson et al's Collins Bird Guide (under a different title in the US though) for less than half of this book's price but has excellent pictures and a perfect size for your pocket.

The previous reviewer criticised this for being too heavy to take to the field. That's hardly what it's for! To get 900 birds and this much information into a field guide you had to have had a free magnifying glass to read it. As to complaints that some of its political geography is outdated, Pshaw! A book as good as this takes years to prepare, it's never going to be able to follow the fast changing countries of Eastern Europe. It's irrelvant if Czechoslovakia doesn't exist as a single political entity anymore, everyone knows what area it refers to.
This is a superb achievement but it needs to be judged for what it is not what it doesn't try to be!
If you want a good European bird field guide, the recent Collins book is probably the best field guide for any region ever.

An excellently detailed one volume book

This book has a well thought out format with beautiful, detailed illustrations of the species in their different plumages. It is the only current one volume presentation of the birds of the western palearctic. It is thoughtfully written and the distribution maps are nicely detailed and easily understood.

'Wildflowers' and 'Natives' are not synonymous

I have not read this entire book, but perused enough to have concerns - beginning with the cover. The flower pictured is Nigella damascena and it is NOT a North American native. Many people are confused about Wildflowers/Natives. They are not interchangeable words. Although the author does not use the term "native" in his title I see that other people reviewing this book are - adding to the confusion. Just my thoughts :)

Best Book About Native Plants for the Mid-Atlantic States
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-30
By far the best advice about growing wild trees, shrubs and flowers native to the eastern United States. For anyone who wants to naturalize woodland borders or ponds, streamsides and meadows, or who simply wants to grow beautiful native plants that are available from specialty nurseries but not often found in neighborhood garden centers. The description of wild, fragrant native azaleas is unsurpassed. Because Hal Bruce's personal experience was in gardens of the Mid-Atlantic states, his understanding of plants and habitats is particularly useful for gardeners in the Atlantic coastal plain.

Less "how to..." than "how to appreciate and use..."

First point: This is a reprint of an excellent, early book (originally published in 1976) that should be read by all lovers of wild plants (in the field and in the garden). Second point: The title is somewhat misleading. This is NOT a primer on how to collect, propogate, cultivate and design with native plants in the garden. While it is filled with interesting and useful information on the plants it describes, those looking for pictorial, step-by-step, truly "how-to" information should consult other reference books. It also focuses on plants found in the mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S., so readers in other areas may find even less useful information for their own gardens.

All hint of misleading titles aside, however, this is a great book to read for one man's perspective on environmental destruction and salvation. Written by Mr. Bruce during a transition period in our environmentalist evolution - between the ecology/flower child movements of the 1960s and early 70s (remember the closed, green "E"?) and the rise of the prairie restoration, Nature Conservancy, rainforest protection, and other highly-organized, politically-correct movements of the 1980s and 90s - it is a plea for people to open their eyes to the beauty and potential loss of the environments that surround them. Using the changing seasons as his backdrop, Mr. Bruce takes us with him on a year-long, three-times-per-week, 90-mile commute through the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia countryside that he refers to as "Delmarva". He tells us about the flora and fauna he sees on these drives, and then goes into great description of their attributes, their relationship to the environment, and the history of their development and distribution. He then shares idea for how these plant materials can not only be preserved from destruction, but how they can be best used in our own gardens, large and small.

Throughout, the author writes with a passionate, personal, engaging perspective on these plants and the people that protect them, never hesitating to criticize plant features he dislikes, but glowing in praise of their attributes and value. It is an enjoyable read, a four-season visit to a beautiful place, with an excellent traveling companion.

It was worth the money when it's $99.99, now that I have known Amazon.com is selling at $79.99, it's even more for your money, it's a combination of Volume I, II, III and two more electronic chapters from Digital Character Animation! Individually that cost more than $100. I tell you I regret I didn't shopp at amazom.com at the first place, :-(

This resource kit is a great 3D bible. It contains everything you want to know about the program, and it covers everything. It has all three volumes for a good price, but the fact that 2 of them are in Adobe Acrobat form just doesn't appeal to me. I would buy this kit only if you need reference material, or if you want in-depth knowledge of 3D theories and information.

Great Resource - too bad the PDF's don't print.

I bought this resource kit, thinking I'd have a valuable library of information. I was right - almost everything I needed to know is right here, plus more. My only problem is that Vol.'s II & III are in PDF form. I knew this when I ordered but thought it would be nice to print out a chapter at a time and work on it. This would be great because I could have a single chapter to put in the copy holder beside the screen instead of a big clunky book in my lap. Not the case - the PDF's are "print protected". This makes it more cumbersome now that I have to switch between my Max screen and the Acrobat screen making it very hard to keep my place within the tutorial. If I could print, the kit would get 5+ stars.

A great novel written by a great author easily can be compared to any of John Grisham's works. storline is about down on their luck lawyers at a Vancover Law firm who are second guessing their profession when it seems that after one of the firm's lawyers are bruttally beaten to death because he defended a low life client and this mysterious "excutioner's list". Unforgettable Characters the author takes aim at the world's most hated profession and makes the reader understand the dangers and the high handed trechery that goes along with the "business as usual" attitude. One great story will keep the reader turing pages right to the very end.

A Brilliant Drama

This is one of the best books I've read in ages. I highly recommend it. William Deverall's characters are real and his characterization is insightful. This book grabs you from the beginning and keeps you hooked - Deverall's storytelling is exceptional.

The law office of Pomeroy, Macarthur, Brovak and Sage is a dysfunctional one at best. These young laywers are learning their lessons the hard way - by trying not to get killed! Someone is killing lawyers that are taking on "morally questionable" clients - and Deverall keeps you on the edge, guessing whodunit and who's the next victim.

Deverall's collection of characters is diverse. They range from Brian Pomeroy - a hardworking, intense lawyer, who's working hard to keep his extra marital affair a secret. Max Macarthur is the lawyer that's holding the firm together by sheer willpower, while John Brovak is a crass man whose life is on the fast track - fast cars, loose women and copious amounts of drugs and alcohol. Augustina Sage is a strong, determined woman of Metis descent whose need for a strong stable man leads her to the not-so-straight edged Judge Russell. The final addition to this interesting group of laywers is Wentworth Chance - a bright naive articling student.

Read it - you won't be disappointed!

I thought that Deverell did an excellent job of maintaining the reader's interest throughout the book, although his choice of method to reveal the killer was cliche and really quite unsupported. Deverell's style of letters from Pomeroy mixed with sections of story was quite well used. Generally good, a few weak points, including miscellaneous love interests, but a pleasant read.

A modern couple are stranded in a strange world somewhat like Regency London with magic. In this world, the couple becomes involved with a magician who is trying to gain power through a trip to the Labyrinth. An obsessed father weds his daughter to the magician, and all the characters take off to find the labyrinth. I find this story charming; the modern couple trying to survive in a strange world add an element of reality.

For any practitioner in the health-care field, particularly in the area of mental health, this is a top-notch reference book. The book is well-organized and presented in a comprehensive manner. From diagnosis and treatment to crisis intervention and practice management, the reference book will provide a welcome addition to the professional library in your office or clinic. The book does not serve as a classic text book, we probably have enough of those around, but for the price, it does make a great addition to a reference library.

In 1933, Judge Horace Blackwell, friend and personal advisor to the president, is found murdered in the White House. Police make a quick arrest since the evidence points towards a black housekeeper Sara Carter, who swears she is innocent. The First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, believes that Sara is telling the truth and decides to investigate. ...... Eleanor quickly learns that Horace was not the squeaky clean judge that his image portrayed. Instead, he was a vicious womanizer. Several people surface who had legitimate gripes and grudges with the Judge. However, things turns nasty when a second murder occurs, making everyone wonder how safe is Franklin in the White House? Eleanor plans to insure her spouse's safety by uncovering the identity of the killer even if it places her won life at risk. ...... The entire Eleanor Roosevelt mystery novels (sixteen in all) are a lot of fun to read. Though the who-done-its are well designed, it is the presence of famous historical figures including such notables as Gertrude Stein, James Thurber, and Babe Ruth, etc. that brings the Depression Era DC into a lively perspective. Elliott Roosevelt, who died several years ago, has written a fabulous mystery that posthumously should garner him new fans. ......Harriet Klausner

In 1933, Franklin Roosevelt, new President of the United States, brought a "Brain Trust" of eminent people to Washington to find ways to end the Great Depression that was destroying the nation. Judge Horace Carter, a member of the Brain Trust, is murdered in the White House. Police arrest a maid, but Eleanor Roosevelt doubts her guilt. Investigation reveals that Judge Blackwell was a sexual sadist, with many people wishing him dead. But using the discarded Bertillon method of identification, Eleanor Roosevelt finds the murderer. It is a racier and faster-moving tale than many in this series, but it still gives us a window to view that long-ago time and its people. If you would like a fascinating mystery that gives you a thoroughly enjoyable insight into the early 1930's, this is the book for you.

It doesn't matter if the private eye's name is John Dalmas, it's still Phillip Marlowe and Phillip Marlowe fans won't be disappointed. Dalmas' life is saved by a beautiful woman who he initially tried to save. I won't say anymore than that because the intrigue, the classic Chandler characters and the atmosphere is all there intact. Elliott Gould is the perfect reader for this type of literature, his reading is cool and crisp and just understated enough for the listeners to lose themselves in the escapist world that is Chandler's.

Audio CD edition: Great story, bad design

This is another great Raymond Chandler story, well performed by Elliott Gould. However, I can't believe that on each CD there is one 50-minute track. In other words, there are no bookmarks (other books on CDs usually have bookmarks about every 5 minutes). This means that if you stop in the middle of a CD, you will have to fast-forward 25 minutes worth of reading when you want to continue the story, which is inconvenient, and almost impossible on many CD players (they skip around after a while). I have many of these Chandler stories on tapes (Dove Audio edition). Those start with a little "jazzy" tune, which puts you right in the mood of the story. This is a detail and a personal preference, but I regret that the Millennium Audio edition doesn't have that tune.

This is a good book - but it's more for students than general readers. Every song is covered, but the information provided is not all that well written. The stories that people want to read are skipped over, and he concentrates on all the boring stuff. One of the most famous Stones stories, for example, is when John Lennon gave them 'I Wanna Be Your Man' for their second single, but the meeting between them doesn't even get half a page. I had to read a Beatles book to find out the full story.
But, having said that, if you're just looking for the facts and figures - a discography of everything they've ever released - then this book will serve you well.

Firstly, I wish there was a way to give a 4.5 stars than just making integer assignments. Anyways, I like this book a lot. I am quite familiar with the work of the authors (at least from a few of the papers that they have in sound and vibration journals). One thing that impresses me a lot of this book is that, it is very nicely written and is easy to understand. They have tons of references to excite any reader. There are a few minor glitches sometimes in the equations (e.g., a minus instead of a plus sign in the exponents, etc.), but nothing the reader can't figure out easily. The coverage of each of their chapters is substantial and you never feel that you are left hanging midway. They give a good amount of basics of DSP/filtering early on to understand the subsequent chapters well. It would be nice if they had a background chapter discussing passive techniques (and their shortcomings). I would strongly recommend this book to people who are interested in sound field/noise control.
