A Taste of HoneyReview Date: 2000-08-23
While neither as thick or as overpowering as his "from an unexpected quarter", DeVault's volume (his first, and only because a lover formed her own publishing house to lure him into doing a book...) serves as a strong introduction to this central figure in the digital renaissance.
I only hope he one day commits the entirety of those cycles to a single volume, so I can pick my own favorites! From the explicit eroticism of "the penetrating rose" to the childlike wonder of "Cassiopeia's well" to the immortality of "pride of authorship", these works will be remembered, cherished, and serve as a fitting backdrop for lovers to join, part and remember.
A Bright Light Shines in Romantic PoetryReview Date: 1999-10-05
While it is not unusual for these characterizations to describe such a book, how often can it be said they're attributed to Yahoo's 1996 "Romantic Poet of the Internet." (tm)
Delving into Pantheon's deeply romantic labors, I approached each poem as an individual, to be probed, dissected and understood. As I read, I realized my poetic naivete and sat confused.
I regrouped and fell back on an age old extraordinarily useful writing tip. Read the work aloud. Hallelujah! The energy of images and emotion created its own light from the darkness of my poetic ignorance.
A bonus bit of WFDV trivia . . . he does not edit his work. What is written is precisely what flowed in that moment. No additions or rearranging. Finis. Does this technique hurt or help a potential reader understand his work? The jury is still out.
I found if read silently, several poems felt repetitious, convoluted or too wordy. For example the words "burnt honey," in describing the subject's eyes, is repeated throughout a number of pieces. This could be a repercussion of the author's lack of editing. Not unlike the dress looking better on the wearer than on the hanger, if read aloud a great majority become more powerful and sweet for the reader.
Knowing these poems were composed for one woman will make many wish they were she. To our benefit, various pieces permit not one singular vision of romantic passion for a woman, but the lucky reader is allowed to visualize a male subject as well. Which in turn creates an alluring work where both genders obtain a tantalizing read.

warm relationship tale that contains a serious undertoneReview Date: 2001-08-18
When Daniel and Jessica meet at his home to fill out the grant request, she meets the seven month old baby girl living with him. He refuses to explain who the child is, but asks for her help in finding him a nanny. Both are attracted to one another, but she rejects his efforts until Sonny returns seeking to carry out his original threat.
Joan Elliot Pickard starts a new generation of her popular "Baby Bet" series with a warm tale that has a serious undertone. PARTY OF THREE focuses on the relationship between the lead couple as well as with the infant, but also provides insight into the importance of shelters. Fans of the original miniseries will want to read this novel and newcomers will want to obtain the original stories, as all are entertaining and well written.

Ah, what a good book! A gritty period piece!Review Date: 2004-08-12
The action shifts to the California ranch that this movie is being filmed on -- the actress is the lead in this movie, and that's why Scott's security firm was hired to bring her back. Scott gets the feeling that he and the filming crew are in real danger now because the gangster is going to be very angry at him and he's going to want to get the actress back again. TO make matters worse, Scott's wife is one of the writers on the movie and he's concerned about her safety.
Faherty is such a great writer that I felt like I was there as it was happening -- riding in the 1960 Tbird convertible with Scott down a remote California road, wondering when the gangster is going to show up again.
I have read other books by Faherty but not in this series. I'm going to have to read more Scott Elliott mysteries -- this book kind of made me sorry that the early 60s are over.

Enjoyable MysteryReview Date: 2000-10-20
However, the rescue does not last long when a plane carrying Bebe and Piolene crashes into a hill with the latter at the helm. Unable to sit back and let the law enforcement types handle the case, Scott begins his own inquiries. Though the suspect list starting with Remlinger seems endless, no one has a clear-cut motive for killing the two movie personalities. Still, feeling deep pangs of guilt for bringing Bebe back to die, Scott continues to investigate what seems like a hopeless case to solve.
RAISE THE DEVIL, the third Scott Elliot case is an enjoyable historical mystery that brings to life Hollywood during the Kennedy Administration. The vast ensemble slows down the story line with unnecessary detours that fail as red herrings because motives never surface. Scott is an interesting individual, but his deep remorse does not feel genuine even if it propels him to obstinately pursue a helpless case. Although the early sixties at the movies is fun for the nostalgic baby boomers and Scott is overall a top rate character, most fans will be better off with Terence Faherty's other series.

Unlock God's GraceReview Date: 2007-09-01
Any one who writes a commentary on the book of Romans should discuss this topic and Rene' A. Lopez does not avoid the nature of man's sin, his position to God, and his need for a redeemer. This book is a commentary on the book of Romans in the Bible. It comments verse by verse - chapter by chapter. The author explains the meaning of Greek words, but it is done sparingly. The author comments on the English translation in easy to understand terms. It is plain the author believes Romans is God's inspired word through the pen of Paul. He does not speculate or give space to those who question the wisdom of God.
Yes the book cover says the keys to Romans are:
What does salvation mean in Romans?
How can one have eternal life?
How should a Christian live?
Can a Christian live?
Does God predestine people?
\
But all matter contained in the book of Romans is expressed and explained in a thoughtful easy to understand manner. Man's sin, God's wrath, God's hatred of sin, the Mosaic Law, Jews-Gentiles, Grace-works,
Seek to do God's Will without trying to earn Salvation is all discussed in this book. My list is not exhaustive, no topic brought up by Paul is avoided or made to fit popular or academic theology. I found the book thoughtful and a joy to read.

A definite career builder for meReview Date: 2008-04-16
This goal was satisfied, in a short time, I was able to cover digital circuits in the discrete class and a short time later, was able to teach a class in digital logic for computer science majors.
Good book on boolean algebra and logic for more advanced studentsReview Date: 2006-05-29
Chapter 1 goes over the basics of boolean logic and the notation used in this outline. Chapter 2 discusses sets and their operations and extends boolean logic to sets of objects. Chapter 3 discusses Boolean algebra, which is a set B together with two binary operations, a singular operation, the two specific elements 0 and 1, and a set of axioms. Thus, in this chapter we are led more into the realm of mathematics than circuits with a good number of proofs as exercises. Chapter 4 abruptly changes course and discusses switching and logic circuits. Here, previous discussions of Boolean logic lead to the practical tasks of minimization and the finding of all prime implicants of a set. The final chapter changes course once again and discusses some advanced topics in Boolean algebra such as lattices, rings, and m-completeness.
Although no specific previous knowledge is really explicitly required to understand this material, I would say that working through the material I found that experience with mathematical proofs, set theory, and oddly enough, abstract algebra were all very advantageous in understanding this outline. It is one of the better written Schaum's outline in that the theory is very well explained. I would recommend it for the more mathematically inclined who are interested in digital logic.
digital designers can find useful problemsReview Date: 2004-12-31
What is more challenging is the second half, dealing with switching circuits. You can see techniques that map from a logic circuit to its Boolean representation. And then the vital idea of a Karnaugh map, in order to simplify that representation. Digital circuit designers live for this stuff! Many problems to chew on. See how well you really understand the material.
You might look with askance on the publication date of 1970. 1970?! Moore had barely formulated his law a few years earlier. And Medium Scale Integration was the order of the day, perhaps, with the first microprocessor still under design. But the maths in this book still holds true now. In fact, it is even more relevant today. Because the circuits are orders of magnitude larger, so finding efficient means of circuit minimisation are more urgent. For that, you need a solid theoretical basis. And this book can test that understanding.

Not much of a "guide" but not a bad library additionReview Date: 2007-08-12
Overall, I feel like I am just reading a bunch of quotes out of different resources slapped together. But that at least means that it points you to multiple other sources well worth utilizing for deeper research.
Pagination of the book is terrrrrible! Musical examples seem to never be on the same pages as the paragraphs that talk about them, which makes the reading experience all the more stressful.
