This book is a must have for anyone researching the calcium phosphates. Nowhere else will you find such an extensive source of information on their preparation, structure, properties, transformations, spectroscopy, diffraction and other analyses. The section on biological and non stoichiometric apatites is extremely informative and the standard XRD patterns are a particularly useful reference. The section on apatite cements could do with updating.

The theory, loudly proclaimed by E.P. Sanders, never sat well with me. He argued that all Judaisms in the first century shared a common core and that all Israel would have a place in the world to come. Well, this is the rabbinic view from much later. But, as Mark Adam Elliott demonstrates with incredible thoroughness in this book, the evidence from texts that actually existed in the first century shows that universalism in Israel was not common. The Essenes and the communities behind the Pseudepigrapha held to the idea of a remnant, that only certain ones would be saved. Different communities had different criteria for getting into the remnant. Elliott's book is more than a defense of a theory about 1st century Judaism, it is an excellent commentary on selected portion from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Pseudepigrapha.

This true story of Sylvia is an example of determination, will and strength, ultimately wrapped up in faith in God. Sylvia is an amazing woman who made it also through the love and support of some of her children.
It's a story that will be instrumental in encouraging other families as they encounter different struggles and life experiences.
Sylvia would continue to be extremely proud of Elliott, who authored this book, and his wife, Carol.
We highly recommend this book.

Authors Debbie Nunley and Karen Jane Elliot have been on a quest to find those who are passionate about both fine dining and historic preservation, and Maryland provided them with the best opportunities to visit restaurants steeped in both fine food and rich history. A Taste Of Maryland History: A Guide To Historic Eateries And Their Recipes thus serves two distinct purposes: as a survey of Maryland historic establishments it provides would-be travelers with a guide to fine historic eating houses across the state, providing an entire page of history to compliment the authors' descriptions of the atmosphere and offerings they experienced today. And as a cookbook, it provides a fine collection of these signature dishes, selecting several from each establishment which have been adapted to home cook proportions. Enjoy Pan-Roasted Scallops with Ginger and Lemon Grass or Buffalo-Style Pizza in a fine gathering. Highly recommended both for Maryland history buffs, cooks, and armchair travelers alike.

This is an incredible resource for anyone interested in alternative (herbal) remedies. Schar's writing is well researched, informative, and very funny. With supporting evidence from diverse sources including "old wives tales," anecdotes, and solid scientific research, he pinpoints the thirty plants (including honey, though not a plant)that are most important in your tonic pot. These herbs were chosen by several strict criteria, including that they all have a long history of success, backed with recent scientific evidence of their efficacy. Most importantly, each of these plants can not only help prevent serious illnesses, but have been proven to help bring people back from the depths of life-threatening ailments. Think of this book when researching alternative remedies for everything from depression or herpes, to liver trouble or a pandemic viral outbreak. My only complaint with this book (my copy is copyrighted 1993) is the lack of an index to make it easier to find the right herb for a particular disorder.

Good Debate Between the "Old" and "New" Dispensationalists
Helpful Votes: 37 out of 39 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-19
Review Date: 2005-04-19
This book is a good introduction of the differences between the old (traditional) and new (progressive) dispensationalism. The first essay of the book (by Bateman) deals with the origins and historical developments of dispensationalism. Bateman goes through the revisions that started after the Darby-Scofield-Chafer era, and through the middle of the Century (McClain-Pentecost-Ryrie-Walvoord days). Those wanting a good historical background on the developments of dispensational thought should consult Bateman's essay.
The first section deals with the hermeneutical differences between traditional and progressive dispensationalism. The difference being that progressives use a complementary hermeneutic which takes into account extra-biblical literature during the post-exilic era. Progressives have changed the structure of dispensationalism due to the realization that a wooden literal hermeneutic cannot be taken for granted, and that the practice of exegesis must be understood in the historical and cultural context of the period when the OT prophetic books were written.
The second section deals with the Abrahamic, Davidic, and New Covenants promised in the OT and how they relate to the Church. Both traditional and progressive dispensationalists agree that the Abrahamic and New Covenants have been partially realized in the Church today; the question is how much of these covenants have been realized in the Church. However, both camps agree that the OT covenants cannot be totally relegated to Israel during the Millennial Kingdom.
The third section deals with the differences between Israel and the Church. Both groups share the belief that Israelites were saved by grace through faith alone. That salvation has always been by God's grace and sovereignty. That there is no distinction between the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven. The only differences between both camps is that progressives believe that there is more continuity between Israel and the Church spiritually, and that the Church is not an interruption in God's soteric purposes. However, both groups tend to have more similarities than differences since both agree that Israel still has a place in God's redemptive plan.
Overall, a good debate between traditional and progressive dispensationalists on key theological issues.
