Elliott Books

This book is a very interesting comparative study of two relevant statesmen of the XVII century, Richelieu and Olivares, the former very [bad-]known through the eyes of The Three Musketeers by Hollywood with the cooperation of Alexandre Dumas, the latter ignored by most of the people, as it usually happens with those that lose a war. Apart from being very readable (I bought it on Sun-day and I have finished by Tuesday) and not very long, the contrast between Richelieu and Oli-vares is useful to avoid topics and myths based on the supposedly a-religious and modern per-formance of the French Cardinal versus the obsolete behaviour and ideas of the Count-Duke, or on the national character of France and/or Spain. In the case of Olivares, I have found that this book dedicates more pages to deal with the psychological and/or personal aspects than Elliot's "The Count-Duke of Olivares. The Statesman in an age of decline", who focuses more on poli-tics.

(Other books I would recommend to read on Spain: As a general overview, "A History of Spain" by Joseph Perez; and more focused on the XVI and/or XVII centuries: "The Spain of Philip II" by Joseph Perez; "Imperial Spain 1469-1716" and "The Count-Duke of Olivares. The Statesman in an age of decline" both of them also written by John Elliot; "Spain 1469-1714, A Society of Conflict", by Henry Kamen; and " Spain 1516-1598 : From Nation State to World Empire" and "The His-panic World in Crisis and Change, 1598-1700" both of them written by John Lynch).

This is a wonderful story. A great book to share with children and grandchildren.

But, given the fact that the subject matter is a downer, it's a remarkably entertaining read. Mr. Elliott's knowledge of his subject matter is both deep and wide, and correctly lays much of the blame for the problem of youthful suicides where it clearly belongs: At the feet of those who romanticize this most dreadful, dismal and damaging of all human acts; the so-called Romantic Poets, and, compellingly, the funeral industry, which since the Civil War has presented a G-rated version of the results of young people buying into these cockamamie fantasies of "noble misunderstood suffering poetic-types."
Mr. Elliott forcefully argues that the best cure is a dose of reality, while providing examples of the real impact on surviving friends and family members.

Dr. Piper has done prodigious research on the Presbyterian church's most outstanding leader of the 20th century. The depth and range of Speer's contributions are truly awesome and Piper is more than up to the task of capturing the stature of the man. Speer himself, unfortunately, believed a biography of him was an unneeded diversion and saw to that much vital material did not survive, making Piper's task all the more difficult. The book also presents a helpful overview of the issues before the major protestant denominations in the first half of the century moving toward ecumenical union in the face of diversity in theology and polity. An important contribution to the history of the American church. Piper shows that Speer's wife, the first president of the YWCA, was an equally exceptional person, calling for another treatment of her influence in the changing role of women in first half of the 20th century.

These works have a special place in Rauschenberg's oeuvre, taking his marriage of art and life to the extreme. They are profoundly literal, and to my mind, the most audacious things he's ever done. Here it is. If you want art in the modern world, if you want to see beauty in the world around you, take a cardboard box and put it on the wall. That's it. Funny how his imagination then drove him to elaborate on this theme, from simple compositions to complex phrasings in cardboard boxes, to the extremes of trompe l'oeil, flourescent back-lighting, and other technically refined means, all to explore the basic premise: beauty is all around us, even in our cast-offs. And what we think of as disposable says a lot about our priorities. The superb essays in this book do their job of illuminating the art without smothering it in analysis. The works speak for themselves. I wish I could have seen the exhibition at Menil, though I did get to see many of these pieces at Sonnabend Gallery in NYC in the early 90s. This is a great book for the lover of modern art, but also anyone who's ever spent quality time staring in rapt adoration at an oily mud puddle or a pile of raked leaves. Essential!!!

This is Professor Elliott's classic on runes. It was written in 1959 & has been a valuable source for basic factual information ever since. Although it acknowledges the surviving Heathen & magical symbolism of the rune names & poems, it sticks to the basic academic facts. This is an essential introduction for anyone serious about learning the runes. Even more so for those who have been duped by the rubbish written in many of the New-Age manuals out there.

PREFACE
This Dictionary contains more than 15,000 words and phrases drawn from Russian legislative acts, international treaties of the Russian Federation, and doctrinal writings. The intention is to produce a Russian/English legal dictionary, that is, one in which the Russian terminological base is founded on Russian legal practice and usage rather than on foreign terminology, as the great majority of available legal dictionaries are.
The English-language equivalents are drawn from the author's more than thirty years of experience in producing scholarly translations of Russian legal materials in the English language, including as Editor of the quarterly journal Soviet Statutes and Decisions and of several looseleaf services of Russian, Ukrainian, Kazakh, Estonian, Uzbek, and other legislation, as well as major legal_ treatises by Russian legal scholars. Insofar as possible, those equivalents are intended to convey the literal meaning of the Russian term into English and to minimise confusion by ascribing, also insofar as possible, a sole or principal English term to each Russian one.
At the moment Russian legal terminology is in the process of transition, accommodating the terminology of a market-based legal system, sometimes inventing new Russian terms and sometimes borrowing them from foreign tongues. At the same time, it is essential to be able to consult the legislation of times past, legislation which in some CIS countries continues to be in force. Consequently, the dictionary contains legal terms of both the Soviet and the post-Soviet eras, and indeed of prerevolutionary Russian Law.

Gail Pursell Elliott's "School Mobbing and Emotional Abuse" is so effective because it addresses the real cause of bullying. Once the heart of the problem is understood, Elliott then gives proven strategies that teach children not to engage in bullying behaviors. They gain a richer understanding of themselves and this leads to an acceptance and new-found tolerance of others. This book is important for anyone working with children and youth.

After reading so many fiction acounts of "The Last Days" it is very satisfying to read an authoritative account of what the book of Revelations really says. The book is easy to read for such a profound subject.
