I found this book in a discount store, and now am ordering copies to give to friends. I have not found a more practical, usable, encouraging book of this type. The material is presented very clearly and leaves you feeling that you CAN help. Easy to read, well-written, easy to use as a reference. The product review of content is accurate--it is as good as it sounds.

This book is an exercise in entering into the mind of Jesus of Nazareth, seeing life through his eyes, making decisions by His scale of values, and finding God in the light of His experience. To be the Lord's Prayer is to live it.
"Norman Elliott has made a distinct contribution to the Christian faith with his distinctly unique interpretation of the world's best known prayer. How to Be the Lord's Prayer puts the Lord's words into the daily experience of living. It shows prayer to be life itself rather than mere words. This magnificent little book has opened for me new windows into the mind of Christ."

An absorbing fantasy, winner of the last Fidler Award (2001)

A year after his father perished at sea, Edward returns to where it happened, staying with his Uncle Hodder. He still hopes to find his father because, although the boat was salvaged, no body was recovered. Straight away strange things happen. Edward meets a mysterious old man who gives him a one-word message for his son. Edward can't read it; it's in a foreign language. "My son will know you," he tells Edward. Then Edward helps an exhausted swimmer to shore and takes him to the home of the three elderly Newnes sisters, who run a B&B but are still waiting for their first guest. Over the sea Edward sees a vision of a land of ice and snow that nobody else can see and sometimes even he can't. He becomes increasingly sure he will find his father there. The swimmer gives him the opportunity to visit the land. But time is fast running out ...
This absorbing fantasy won the last Fidler Award (2001). Woven in with Edward's story is the Norse myth of the Death of Baldur. Each of the characters in the story has a counterpart in the Baldur legend.
I very much doubt this is Patricia Elliott's first book, though it's obviously her first for children or it wouldn't have been eligible for the Fidler. She has the gift of highly detailed characterisation that isn't likely to make a middle-grade reader impatient with all the description. The book is also extremely well written. I don't think there was one point in which I was jerked out of the story by bad grammar or clumsy punctuation--something that happens all too frequently these days.
Finally, as a writer for children myself, I must express my concern that the Fidler Award has been discontinued. There are already few enough awards for children's writers.

Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Improving Test Performance Of Students With Disabilities... On District And State Assessments by Judy L. Elliott (Assistant Superintendent of Special Education, Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach, California) and Martha L. Thurlow (Director of the National Center on Education Outcomes and a special education researcher for the past fifteen years) offers classroom instructors and school staff members a wealth of strategies for improving instructions, optimizing student accommodations, and test preparation guidelines to aid students with unique learning challenges. Self-tests to double-check the depth of one's knowledge and understanding pepper this straightforward guide grounded heavily in practicality, and sample tables and worksheets designed to engage instructors and learners help with a "hands-on" approach above and beyond dry theory. An excellent resource particularly for public school educators.

IN A TEAPOT is a small gem, a story of revenge carefully planned over a period of time. The writing is flawless, the story is short enough to read in an evening and long enough to satisfy. Faherty writes with humor and a light touch, murder notwithstanding.
The year is 1948. An independent producer wants to cast members of Hollywood's aging "British colony" in a movie version of Shakespeare's final play, "The Tempest." Names like Ronald Colman, Charles Laughton and Basil Rathbone are bandied about.
So far, the only actor to sign a contract is Forrest Combs, who's dating a burlesque queen. The producer knows that the Brits won't sign if there's a hint of scandal. Unless Combs gives up the girl the movie won't happen.
Enter Scott Elliott, a former actor now working for Paddy McGuire, president of the Hollywood Security Agency. Their specialty, as Scott observes, is pulling clients out of a jam. "Also hushing up, paying off, and leaning on."
An example of Faherty's smooth and judicious use of language is this brief exchange when Paddy and Scott meet with Jeffries, the producer:
QUOTE:
"It may mean some money changing hands," Paddy observed.
Jeffries took a pen from his pocket and wrote a figure on a damp cocktail napkin. I counted three zeros when he pushed it across to Paddy.
"Promise her that much to forget she ever met Combs. And a second payment the day we finish shooting."
Paddy tucked the napkin into his watch pocket. "Consider it done," he said.
END QUOTE
As Scott and Paddy drive away, Paddy says, "I smell a fish," and the story takes off.

It's worth every penny and more. This book is based on the recently popularized theory of PNI (psycho-neuro-immunology). The basic theory is based on the premise that people are a whole being (body/mind/soul). The text is very effective in communicating the reasons for disease, and offers MANY wonderful exercises to achieve health - at all levels (physical, emotional, etc.). I have found this book so helpful that I use the exercises in teaching a meditation class. Each of the students in the class has their own book. They have been recommending it to their friends.

Innovative and practical method for getting into chord tone soloing and achieving jazzy sounds

This book is based on Joe's Jazz Workshop 1 and 2 electives as taught at GIT for 20 years and was one of the best classes I took at MI.
It begins by the 'connecting game' of connecting basic seventh arpeggios of II VI progression by nearest tone and then progresses through melodic minor harmony of Altered and Locrian #2 scales to use min(maj7) and maj7(#5) arpeggio 'combo plates' to give a Jazz sound.
However, even basic connecting game takes a lot of practice to visualize one arpeggio as finishing another, or swap between different scales smoothly. This might seem a bit like painting by numbers at first, but point is to get to know sound and fingerings.
Eleven common chord 'situations' are covered; II V I in major and minor, long and short, turnarounds, bebop bridge, non-resolving II V and principle is to be able to take any Jazz standard or other tune, break it down into common situations and create lines for each.
Also covered are chromatics in maj7, min7, m7b5 and dom7 chords and targeting chord tones with surround notes.
This book contains a lot of useful information you will probably not have seen so clearly presented elsewhere, in its 104 pages.
If you get really adventurous, you can extend to all five major and minor patterns and use other arpeggios from melodic minor such as IV7 and VIm7b5, but material in book will probably keep you occupied for at least six months and probably a lot longer.

The title of the book is a clue to Mr. Elliott's intentions, since all his fiction is an effort to come to terms with "last things": love, dignity, death, looked at without pretense and without sentimentality. The title story examines a woman of thirtry-eight who finds herself suddenly widowed and must therefore discover her own nature in order to continue alone. "Into the Cone of Cold" reflects his continued interest in the more speculative and serious aspects of science fiction. What would happen, he asks, if at a Catholic university a machine was invented capable of bringing human beings to absolute zero temperature and back without harming them? "Sandra" investigates the connection between love and power in terms of a master and his female slave.
Mr. Elliott, who is acknowledged to be one of the leading literary figures of his generation, writes with wit, precision, and compassion. He is a natural storyteller interested both in the tale he tells and in the presures at work below the surface as his characters confront their situations.
