Finally, some truth about Trudeau.

Since the death of former Prime Minister Trudeau, the media has waxed poetic on the man's charm, charisma and zest for life. While not one to speak ill of the dead, I found myself sickened by the accolades accorded to the late Trudeau.

In the 70s, the Canadian dollar was worth $1.07 U.S. Today, it is worth 66 cents. This devaluation of our dollar and the corresponding devaluation Canada, are thanks largely to Trudeau's socialist rule. From multiculturalism to official bilingualism to the National Energy Policy, his policies demonstrated an arrogance and lack of fiscal responsibility that truly crippled Canada.

<> is a keenly insightful work. Its author was not blinded by his subject's charm or sex appeal; McDonald clearly describes Trudeau's legacy and, in so doing, paints a damning picture of an egotistical and self-satisfied leader. It serves as an effective cautionary tale for Canadian and international readers alike.

A love story in hard times

This is a lovely story of a big, strong and apparently simple (but in reality, an intelligent and honest) navvy in England around the time of the First World War. Moleskin Joe saves the life of a young girl by pulling her to safety after a dam on a construction site bursts, after which she kissed him and told him he's 'the best'. This encounter leaves an indelible imprint on Moleskin's mind but the girl soon leaves the area with her father and disappears from Moleskin's life. But he never forgets her. The book traces his life through the war in France and back to navvydom in England and Scotland after his return. We meet the other navvies and we see the lawlessness, the illegal distilling, the heavy drinking and fighting that was the life of so many men (and some women) at the time. All through it, Moleskin Joe hopes he will see the girl again.

MacGill is a gifted writer and a beautiful wordsmith. The book sees through the rough and bohemian life of the navvy to the pure and gentle morality of Moleskin Joe. It is a simple story of real love.

What a great resource and reference for theater in this time. Subtitle is: From the Beginning to 1914. Lots of photos, detailed complete appendixes for plays, entertainments. Chapters include Multum in Parvo, the Box-Houses, Morals and Manners, the Circuits, and There Isn't Any More. Names of the troupes and companies are precious. Great deal, recommended, and very rare.

Wert has uncovered the complex , intriguing life of Herbert Hoover. Hoover's energy, verve, and even joie de vivre is revealed in anecdote after anecdote. While the book is a great fishing adventure, following Hoover from youth to old age on nearly every fishing outing he undertook, in the background is subtle political history and commentary that tells an enormous amount about Hoover's character and political savvy . Most interesting is the way we are shown the behind-the-scenes shenanigans of powerful political figures.

The book is superbly researched and well annotated and illustrated. A great read.

Hospitalization From a Child's Point of View

This book is a great contribution to the field of literature on hospitalized children. It provides all the necessary information to prepare a child for hospitalization. The illustrations are excellent. I was particularly pleased by the way the book handled emotional concerns of the child. Mastery of the hospital experience is encouraged through play with the 'Hospital Road Map'.

This book addresses the major fears of children in a clear, supportive, non-threatening manner. The family-centered approach to the book is most effective in mitigating the stress of hospitalization for families and their children.

I would highly recommend this book for parents, teachers, pediatricians, health care professionals and anyone working with young children.

An Hour of Last Things

Review Date: 2007-09-27
An Hour of Last Things is Geoge Elliott's new collection of short stories [circe 1968]. Following Among the Dangs;: Ten short stories - a leading contender for the 1960 National Book Award - which Herbert Gold called "a masterly group of stories." Reviewing that book, the New York Times Book Review described Mr. Elliott as "a writer of impeccable artistry and admirable discipline." The judgement is as apt for these stories as for his first collection.

The title of the book is a clue to Mr. Elliott's intentions, since all his fiction is an effort to come to terms with "last things": love, dignity, death, looked at without pretense and without sentimentality. The title story examines a woman of thirtry-eight who finds herself suddenly widowed and must therefore discover her own nature in order to continue alone. "Into the Cone of Cold" reflects his continued interest in the more speculative and serious aspects of science fiction. What would happen, he asks, if at a Catholic university a machine was invented capable of bringing human beings to absolute zero temperature and back without harming them? "Sandra" investigates the connection between love and power in terms of a master and his female slave.

Mr. Elliott, who is acknowledged to be one of the leading literary figures of his generation, writes with wit, precision, and compassion. He is a natural storyteller interested both in the tale he tells and in the presures at work below the surface as his characters confront their situations.
