A great book for medical and non-medical readers

This book describes the transformation of diabetes from a rapidly-fatal illness to a chronic one with a host of new associated problems. Though written by a physician, the book focuses on this transformation from patients' perspectives. In addition, it emphasizes the impact of diabetes on not just the health of individuals but also on their day-to-day lives.

The highlight of this book is the collection of stories of individual patients and families. Drawing from letters and other patient records at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Feudtner vividly details the lives of diabetic patients in the 20th century. Of particular interest is a patient who corresponds with his physicians using self-drawn cartoons, a number of which are included in the book.

While this book will be of special interest to diabetic patients and physicians, I recommend it to any reader intersted in the interplay between modern medicine and the people it aims to serve.

This book is interesting in that it is about the lives of the disciples after the death of the Christ. The author has researched the book & has put an interesting account across about the differences between Saint Paul & Saint James & how they viewed their masters teaching. The author states that James was Jesus's actual sibling brother which I believe has become a belief amongst many after the books that have been recently published on this. The author also seems to be suggesting that Jesus had a secret teaching that he was passing onto Thomas & Mary. Mary Magdeline has a significant role in this book & is not depicted as being the whore that the Bible regards her as.

FASCINATING!

If you have ever been wished to know more about the many secret and violent organizations that have run amok on this planet than this is the book for you. Elliott gives you the chance to sneak inside the world of mobsters, cultists, and terrorists, their history and tactics, all from the safety of your home. Some of the stories related are truly incredible. In a chapter on tribal magic, we hear of an English traveller in Africa who witnessed a ceremony practiced by a group known as the Jackals. Here it is claimed a dancer actually transformed into a jackal! Another story tells of a group that required initiates to kill and canabalize to join.

Elliott begins with a history of violent and secret organizations, discussing Nazism, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Ludites. He goes on to cover modern European terrorist organizations such as the Red Brigades and the Bader Meinhoff gang. He then takes us into the world of for profit criminal organizations such as the Gambino Family and the Columbian drug lords. The final chapters explore cults and magical practices like Vodoo. All in all makes for great reading. I am surprised this book has not been more popular.

... London UK , 30 May, 2001 Excellent Book This is an excellent book and my BICSI RCDD students find it a very useful study aid and reference book.

The book explains complex terms in easy to follow ways and it is packed full of usefull information.

It is clear that Barry Elliot has significant real world experience and it is relevent to all those that have an interest in Structured Cabling.

The book is up to date and has a refreshing "European/International slant" which is unusual since most books on Structured Cabling are writen by North American authors.

Great Insight Into a Life and Policies

This book is a great insight into one of the leading politicians in Britain today. From his years at Eton and Oxford to leading the opposition attacks on Labour in the House of Commons gallery, this piece of literature provides an accurate yet objective look into the intriguing life of the Honorable Mr. David Cameron. As well as a look at his policies and positions for the future of Great Britain and the world. I bought my copy while on a trip to London and as an American supporter of the MP am enthused to see that it will finally be available to all Americans. Overall I was very impressed by Francis Elliot and James Hannings portrayal of Mr. Cameron and would recommend to all who take a strong interest in UK politics and figures.

A superbly researched and presented biography
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-04
David Elliot has written a superbly researched and presented biography of Charles Fairfax Murray, perhaps the least known of all the Pre-Raphaelite painters who was the friend of William Morris, the Rossettis, Edward Burne-Jones, and a protégé of John Ruskin. A man who prized his privacy, Murray deliberately sought anonymity, left no memoir, and his diaries revealed very little about himself as he served his friends as a supporter, confidante, and adjutant ranging from adding miniatures to Morris' illuminated manuscripts to serving as a copyist for Ruskin. Murray's spheres of activity also came to include collecting, dealing, museology, and art-historical scholarship. A grandson of Murray, biographer David Elliot is able to offer a wealth of insights into Murray's personal and professional life as revealed by papers on both sides of the family, as well as diligently and painstaking research through the archives of Britain, Europe, and America. Charles Fairfax Murray is a magnificent and much appreciated contribution to students of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and those associated with it.

best book on this subject
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-06
In my opinion this is the best book ever written on chemically reacting flow. Unlike many other books on this subject, it focuses on formulating models exactly and solving them using state-of-the-art computational methods. By "exactly" I mean models that attempt to simulate chemical kinetics and transport phenomena at the molecular level. The book is aimed at chemical engineering applications, and consequently it is limited to thermally compressible flows ( low Mach numbers). The problems at the end of the chapters are generally very good and frequently involve issues that arise in real research applications. My only quibble is that the chapter on reaction-rate theory focuses too much on QRRK methods, which were really superseded by RRKM theory about 50 years ago.
