About Face: A Daughter Looks Back At A Soldier And The Great War is the biographical account of Vernon Darius Elliott, Eleanor Brownell's father who joined the American army in 1918 and went off to fight in France. Vernon rose to the rank of Battalion Major Sergeant of the 16th Field Artillery of the Fourth Division. During the Battle of the Meuse-Argone, he and his unit fought continuously for twenty four days. For his bravery in delivering a message to the French army during heavy fighting, Vernon received the French "croix de guerre". He was gassed on the front line and spent several months in a hospital. Following the Armistice, Vernon rejoined his division as part of the American Army of Occupation. A highly welcome and engaging contribution to World War I studies, About Face is based upon thirty letters Vernon wrote to his family, a history published by the Fourth Division, and family memories.

I read it some time ago in Arrowsmith's translation - do not use Arrowsmith's translations - this time I read Jack Flavin's - Aristophanes translations seem to vary more than say the tragedies translations - in this translation the zany wackiness comes out and also the conception - a guy in Athens declares a separate peace from all his fellow citizens and his life starts working in contrast - it's wonderful!

Seward Whitfield tells a delightful story filled with some of the most unique and interesting characters I've read about in years. Imagine you're a dog who thinks he's human and who gets caught up in the affairs of a small town on the Oregon coast. The story is an entertaining look at human nature in spite of, or perhaps because of, the canine protagonist.

The Adventures of Elliott Parks 1st book, Elliott Wants A Puppy, was adorable and heartwarming. Elliott Parks is a very lovable little boy. The Adventures of Elliott Parks 2nd book, Welcome Kim Lee, is also a heartwarming story. It's a story about adoption. I love how this book teaches children that the most important aspect of a family is love. As a mother, this story melted my heart. I think families who adopt children are special and I think adopted children are special because they were chosen. My daughter loved this book!

THOUGHT PROVOKING AND EXTREMELY WELL WRITTEN

This is an inteligent, well written and extremely thought provoking book which takes a critical look at the current state of world free market capitalism. The main thrust of the books argument is that governments of the left have given up the fight in the reform of capitalism and in doing so have focussed their intervention onto the citizen, ie from market control to social control. I think this argument is very true looking at the policies of the British 'New Labour' government over the last 2 years. The book gives a very interesting cultural tour over the last 50 years which compliments the politcal sea changes over this period.

This is the one book of poems that has mattered to me the most. It changed the way I looked at the world as well as the way I looked at language. If you can find this book and read it two or three times--live with it, in other words--you will rediscover the magic in poetry, far, far away from the Iowa City crowd, the Pulitzer people and all the academic poets in all the university MFA writing programs fighting for literary immortality. These poems will live forever in my heart and, I would hope, in the hearts of anyone who reads them.

I loved this book! As a musician, the entertaining characterizations were very accurate to real-life attitudes! The book is educational, but above all, it is exciting and very "alive". Each instrument-playing alligator has a different tone. The illustrations are very detailed and accurate. Among many children's books that distinguish musical instruments, this one is the most unique and really stands out. How often do YOU see elegantly dressed musical alligators?
