Chatty, easy to read book about hiliarous escapades with members of The American Winds Concert Band through the heart of Europe. Recipes, gathered from family kitchens in small pensions, assure inovative ways to provide adequate amounts of lycopines - one of the most important anitcarcinogens. The book is endorsed by one of Florida's leading gastroentrologists, Dr. Joseph S. Spano, of Naples, Florida, where the author also lives. After photographing the author at a book signing, and hearing comments from fans, I felt compelled to revise my review.
Very chatty and homespun.

This book was very good.
Charlotte really went through some very hard times with her husband
John. I am glad to hear she was able to break away and control her own life. I was shocked to read just how mean this man could be.
I first saw this movie on TV some years back and it was good but the book is so much better. It goes into a lot more detail about
her marriage to John. I hope that John has gotten help for his need to control everyone. Who did he think he was?

This is an excellent account of spouse abuse written by the woman who lived it. It is a good example of how "white-collar" families are not immune to such horrors. While I found it very interesting, I also found much of it to be difficult to read because of what Charlotte Fedders went through at the hands of her cruel husband. It is almost unbelievable that any human could treat someone so horribly. She relates, in detail, many examples of the abuse she suffered. I highly recommend this book. It is one not only of the horrors of abuse but it's also one of hope.

I personally find the decorating styles and colors in these photos very appealing. If you "search inside" and look at the table of contents, you'll see that the book covers the design process as well as depictions of various styles.

I found this book to be a very useful resource for creating distinctive window treatments. It is extremely comprehensive and covers just about every topic imaginable. It's also well organized and easy to read. There are beautiful photographs on almost every page and plenty of sidebars with useful tips and information. It gave me great ideas not only for windows, but for home decorating in general.

I sometimes ask my oldest son just what did he learn at Wharton School studying for his MBA? Not much as far as he can tell me.
This book should be required reading for anyone who aspires or already is a CEO. Jaques wisdom in this book is worth two years of graduate business study. It should also inspire the reader to read his other works.
Perhaps you have wondered where GE found its storied organization and leadership development system. Well, wonder no more. It is all based on Jaques work over the past 60 years.
So, why is Jaques such a secret? Because companies using his theories in practice consider it a competitive advantage.

This collection of short stories is nothing short of amazing. Please treat yourself to these underrated and terrifically "performed" pieces. Of particular note is the title piece "Star Quality." Mr. Coward, using his keen wit and history in the theatre, writes a humorous, touching, and biting story of a play from it's beginning to opening night introducing many memorable characters on the way, from the aging diva, to the gay writer and director (interesting since I believe the works were written pre-Gay Lib). Bitchiness reigns supreme. If you like "All About Eve" you will certainly enjoy this story as well as the others on the tapes.
"After all, I was only thinking of the play."

"Star Quality," Noel Coward's satirical novella (written in 1951) about the production of a new play, with all its attendant problems, is so full of dramatic life that it is easy to see why Coward himself attempted to convert it to a play in 1956, and why other playwrights, using Coward's own script as a base, have added to it and ultimately produced it as a play in London and New York.
Describing the producing of a play by an unknown author, "Star Quality" comes to life when the respected Ray Malcolm is hired to be director, and the egomaniacal star Lorraine Barrie is chosen to be leading lady. The clash of egos and wills between Malcolm and Barrie is a foregone conclusion, though each insists that "the play comes first." The "star" insists that they hire Marion Blake as a supporting character because she will not compete with Barrie for the limelight, then decides that the entire ending has to be rewritten. When Malcolm decides to fire Marian Blake for incompetence, Barrie plays games and pretends to be ill, unable to go on. A hissy fit results in fisticuffs.
The characters, though stereotypes, enhance the wicked satire of play production. Of particular note is the character of Tony, a friend of the director. Written long before gay liberation, Coward is completely open here about the role of gays in the theatre and their influence on productions, though he skirted around this subject in his play Present Laughter.
"Traveler's Joy" is a much shorter and more poignant story about an aging actor from a traveling acting troupe who spends the night with a lonely boardinghouse proprietor who reacts to him with "an agony of desire." Not of the same caliber as "Star Quality," it appears to have been selected for its length and its ability to fill the time left on the tape.
Denholm Elliott's ability to bring all the various characters to life is remarkable. He reads with assurance, switching voices and characters with ease, bringing each one to such vibrant life that the reader forgets that it is only one reader and not a complete cast of characters playing roles. His wit and control parallel those of Coward himself, and make this tape a classic recording of one of Coward's best stories. Mary Whipple

An allegorical fable about bowing to peer pressure

Review Date: 2005-06-13
Engagingly write by Kathleen Killion and superbly enhanced with the watercolor artwork of Gary Lang, The Glass Heart is the story of a young girl who asked a glassblower to make her a new, beautiful, jeweled glass hart. She trades her glass heart for another in order to please others. After experiencing several adventures of the heart, she ultimately returns to the safe and trusted home of the glassblower, where she ultimately discovers the beauty of her own heart. The Glass Heart is an allegorical fable about bowing to peer pressure, fitting in with the "right" crowd, and trying to change yourself in order to be like other people's expectations of you. A celebration of personal individuality, The Glass heart is especially recommended for young (and not-so-young) readers having to deal with the stresses and temptations of peer pressure and group conformity.

"And so, the story begins, about a girl who had a heart made of glass. It was fragile, delicate and transparent with beautiful, shining swirls of color."
Kathleen A. Killion has a new take on the classic Cinderella story and it involves a glass heart instead of a glass slipper. The girl in the story wants to share her heart with her true love and takes a journey to find her prince charming. Instead of sitting at home by the fireplace reading or dancing with mice (a scene I've always adored in the movie), she goes out in search of love and meets a prince at his castle.
When she attempts to give her heart to the prince, he wants one that is "adorned with diamonds and gems."
She then attempts to find a glassblower who can make her a heart that will please the prince. In the process she gains a superficial substitute for her heart and has her second heart broken.
Will she be able to find her true self again or will she be doomed to wandering the forests looking for a man who can treat her like a princess?
The ending is beautiful and inspirational and will give girls hope and ideas for the type of man they should be looking for. The Glass Heart is a treasure written by a woman who has overcome many obstacles, including cancer and a challenging relationship. Instead of dispelling the entire romance myth, she explores the reality of finding the love you deserve.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Glass Heart Foundation. An art exhibition of heart drawings will debut in 2006 at the St. Louis Science Center. This book is a beautiful magical gift and the idea of drawing a picture of your own heart is healing and illuminating.

Having loved "A Taste of Pennslyvania History", I was so excited to get this book. Taste of Ohio History is just as wonderful as the authors' first book. Plan on getting every book in the series--I look forward to all 50 books (just ordered Virginia and anxiously await Maryland). The writing is wonderful and the descriptions of the restaurants and the recipes are such a great addition to my kitchen bookshelf.

If you're a fan of British comedy, you probably remember the television series "The Goodies" starring Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie, in which the trio had their wacky adventures and travelled around on a three-seater 'trandem' bicycle. The actual trandem was bought at a BBC props auction and ridden for charity through Africa...a hilarious travelogue of the collision between British eccentricity and adventure and African tradition and exploration. If you enjoy humorous travel books like those of Bill Bryson, Michael Palin, or 'Round Ireland with a Fridge' by Tony Hawks, this is the book to look for...IF it was in print! It's currently out of print in the US and even Amazon UK (www.amazon.co.uk) doesn't list it as available. Come on, US travel publishers...this should be a constantly in-print classic: get on yer bike and get it available again!

This book is excellent for all beginners and experienced carpenters alike. It gives all the information needed to complete a timber frame project, and gives the info in easy to understand terminalogy. It has good examples of all the types of joinery needed for a timber frame. I have just finished doing a 16 x 24 foot pottery building that has turned out very nice. I made all my plans and cut the timbers by using the information in this book. It has been a valuable tool in the process.
An excellent primer to timberframing, a must read.

Originally copyrighted in 1977, The Timber Framing Book was one of the first books published about the timber framing revival. Stewart Elliott and Eugenie Wallas have carefully crafted a simple book on the basics, including planning, mathematics and simple engineering, layout, joint cutting and raising. There are a large number of very nice drawings by Linda Foss that illustrate all aspects of timber frames. In the center of the book are 22 pages of black and white photographs by Jeremy Foss and Randy Hillner that clearly document the raising of a frame, beginning to end. The last chapter of the book describes the building of a 12' x 16' timber frame shed. There are drawings, a timber schedule and complete raising plan to test you new found skills. This was done in the March 1980 issue of Rodale's New Shelter magazine, including a clapboards and a slate roof. Also included are a seven page Glossary, a two page Bibliography, a five page Appendix of drawings of basic timber framing joints and their uses. The Timber Framing Book is a great way to get a clear understanding of timber frames before graduating to books by other authors like Tedd Benson. This book is a must have for any timber framer's toolbox.
