This book has it all--military combat, intrigue, mystery, love, power and suspense. It is sure to capture a variety of audiences with diverse interests. The plot is set twenty years in the future, but the political possibilities will haunt you today. The sophistication of the novel belies the authors' young ages. The characters are painted with such careful attention that you will find yourself identifying with the heros--only to find your instincts misplaced. This is the type of book you will keep on your bedstand to read your favorite scenes over and over. Though with this book, that just may end up being cover to cover.

A book to enjoy

With this unique collection of flip books, one of the artists with the best senses of humor in photography has excelled himself ! If you are a collector of fine photographic works in prints or in books, you've got to get this set. How the heck they got a master to do a set of flip books is a mystery, but it's a prized set in this house. Too much fun.

Not as good as the first - but my review stays the same ... Finally a book where the girl is not self-absorbed, shallow, or boy obsessed. The heroine loves her parents, is brave, and smart. A fun book to read to your child. Great political(ish) adult humor to keep us entertained.

A fun, silly, action-packed story

Evangeline Mudd is a sprightly 10-year-old who loves adventure. (Didn't she just return from saving her parents who were trapped in the Ikkinasti Jungle?) But now that she's back home in New England and passing the time swinging in the trees, she's bored. (Poor girl!) Just in the nick of time a letter arrives marked URGENT!!! It's from a friend of hers who's active in a "save-the-animals" group. She reminds Evangeline of a promise Evangeline made to her --- and now Evangeline needs to keep that promise.

As it turns out, Evangeline's father has a second cousin twice removed named Melvin Mudd. Being a not-so-nice man, he has a mink ranch called Mudd's Marvelous Minks. And he is about to turn all of his marvelous minks into marvelous ballet costumes! (I told you he wasn't nice.) And all because his weird wife, India Terpsichore, wants to put on a ballet starring herself! Evangeline must rescue the minks and turn them loose. But how? Melvin and India surely will recognize her when she appears at their door, having visited them before.

While on their very doorstep, Evangeline decides to disguise herself as a reporter. When the door to Melvin's house opens, the evil Ratsputin and Alexy Alexy, a boy about her age, appear. Ratsputin eyes her suspiciously and Alexy Alexy looks very sad (as you will see from the wonderful illustrations). Luckily, when India and Melvin meet Evangeline, now disguised as a reporter, they do not recognize her. But Ratsputin knows her real name and watches her like a beady-eyed hawk.

One night, Alexy Alexy suddenly appears outside Evangeline's window. He got there by simply jumping up from the ground floor! Alexy can jump higher then any other ballet dancer; Ratsputin has held Alexy practically in bondage, and makes him jump and dance all over the world. All the money, of course, goes to Ratsputin.

Evangeline and Alexy team up and hatch a wild plan to save the minks. Alexy leads Evangeline to the mink farm, but they find the cages open and empty! Where are the minks? They soon discover that mean Melvin Mudd has played a trick on them and the animal rights group. The minks are somewhere else. But where? Evangeline suddenly figures it out, and with Alexy, they find the mink ranch and free the minks. How they do all this makes for a funny, silly, action-packed story.

Requisite Organization

Review Date: 2008-02-08
Elliott Jaques is Canada's Peter Drucker but as a psychologist gets stuck in creating nomenclature that is difficult to follow. This work has the benefit of wordsmithing by a coauthor (S. Clement)which releases the valuable content to us in clear discussion. And what insight there is when viewing organization and management from this different point of view. Whatever your beliefs are of management and leadership this book will sharpen and deepen your understanding. At the heart of Jaques discovery is that just as we say some people "run deep" he believes they also have differing time horizons in their operating mode. It follows that higher management positions must be able to "see" further ahead if they are to contribute value to their direct reports. Read this book for its uniqueness and intriguing insight.

Elliott Jaques devised a system for analyzing executive ability based upon an individual's time horizon--the maximum period of time in the future toward which his/her work activities were aimed in their performance. He reached this conclusion during extensive, longitudinal, empirical studies in England. His series of books reflect his elaboration and extension of this finding. He worked, for a time, with Dr. Owen Jacobs of the U.S. Army (and then the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, ICAF). Jaques prior, groundbreaking book, "Requisite Organization" is more pictorial than this volume. The present work is oriented more towards practicing executives. After reading it, I bought a copy and loaned it to my boss! I wish more bosses would read it--and carefully at that. The charts provided are engaging and thought-provoking. A less extensive volume, "Human Capability" follows in sequence. Jaques wrote it with is wife and publisher: Kathryn Cason. It is a fine sequel, adding some additional perspectives and completing the charts that Jaques developed over time. These books are most strongly recommended for serious students and practitioners of management. They go far in attempting to move management into management science.

This book is part of a series that Mary Engelbreit issued a few years ago. This book series is comprised of these nifty little books filled with great ideas, depending on the topic. The photos in the book are absolutely amazing, just as all of M.E.'s books have wondeful photos. Ideas are easy to follow. Very inspirational.

As a person who has worked with cancer patients for years I think this book is the very best guide availble for understanding what goes on in families who are trying to survive the difficulties in caring for a loved one who is dying. Everyone who works with these families--and the families themselves can benefit from the wisdom here. I have heard the author speak and he is as good in person as in print.

Families' stories are touchingly and sensitively presented

This book took me by surprise. I thought it would be a textbook--and it was. But it was even more--the author's ability to bring you into the lives of families is uncanny. Not only are their struggles with terminal illness poignant and inspirational, but he also gives the reader some solid directions for how to be of help. I confess that I was looking for a book to help me through my own personal situation, but I found much more and I am grateful. The last chapter, in which he presents the dilemmas of modern medical technology, is worth the whole book.

Finding true love again
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-09
This book is Book #2 in Joan's series, THE BABY BET. It centers around the MacAllister family and their friends. Every time a woman is pregnant, The Baby Bet goes into action. Everyone puts twenty dollars into a pot, and Forrest MacAllister, who is the current champion of The Baby Bet, determines not only the sex of the baby but how many babies the woman is going to have. This is usually done prior to a doctor's appointment, and when Forrest announces the news, he does so by producing stuffed toy rabbits (each rabbit representing a baby) in either blue or pink (representing the sex of the baby).

Deedee Hamilton and Ryan MacAllister meet at his sister's twins' birthday party. Now Deedee and Ryan have known each other for several years, but neither have really gotten to know each other due to Ryan's cold, aloof manner (as a result of his wife being killed in an emergency room two years before). Both have deceased spouses, and both believe that they're happy with the way they've been living their lives so far. Yet it troubles Deedee seeing Ryan being so alone, so distant, so she resolves to get him to live again. They start to spend time together, and both become instantly extremely attracted to each other. (Yet they deny it and claim it's only lust.) After having a *wonderful* date together, they make love at Deedee's and the next morning agree to be friends and lovers. Nothing more, nothing else. No strings attached. They also agree to reevaluate their lives since both are secretively miserable with the current state of their lives. (Ryan had resigned from the police force after his wife's death. Deedee wants to start a family, but is a widow.)

FRIENDS, LOVERS...AND BABIES! was a truly enjoyable book about two people finding each other and deciding to live again. Funny, lighthearted, and a quick read. I got through it in two days. The fastest I've ever read a category romance. I was a little annoyed at how Deedee and Ryan "muse" a lot over things, and how Ryan was constantly "running his hands down his face." I *almost* put down the book when Ryan confronted Deedee after finding out she was pregnant. I was almost too uncomfortable with the accusations he was throwing at her. Especially the comment how she just used him for "stud service." But, overall, a wonderful read.

Deedee Hamilton is introduced to us in the first of the Baby Bet series books-Angels and Elves. Deedee runs the bookstore and is best friends with Andrea and Jillian. Andrea's brother Ryan is a cop and at the beginning of the book we discover that his wife is tragically killed and two years later he is still secluding himself from life. He has retired from the police force, never dates, and hardly participates in family functions. Deedee is a life long friend of the MacAllister clan and wants to help Ryan. Deedee, herself, is a widow and feels she can help Ryan. This is a beautiful love story of two people waking up and deciding to live again with the help of each other and family. The great thing is if you are reading the Baby Bet series than you will be happy to know that the rest of the MacAllister clan is involved in this book as well. It is just a fun series.
