Hacksaw is a book written by Edward Jones, escape artist extraordinare. He sucessfully escaped from prison fourteen different times, making him somewhat of a criminal legend. Unfortunately for him, escaping fourteen times means that he got caught that many times as well, which does not say much for his ability to evade the police and FBI. While excessively good at escaping from prison, he was absolutely stupid when he was out. He made all kinds of major mistakes which landed him right back in prison again.

This book, besides being a fun read, illustrates the contemporary prison problem in the United States. Mr. Jones was nothing more than a misbehaving child when he was first given a stint in prison. It was in prison that he became a real criminal. It was in the place that he was supossed to reform that he learned to purposely break the law. This same thing happens to many in prisons today. A teenager is jailed for reckless driving or the such, and while he spends his few months in jail, he picks up a new lifestyle from the experienced criminals he is living with. Hacksaw is an excellent picture of why the criminal punishment system in the U.S. is suceeding only in producing more criminals. Mr. Jones realizes partway through his life that he is in a Catch 22: he is running from the police because he has been sentenced to life imprisonment for multiple escapes, and either he turns himself in and spends his life in prison, or he keeps running but can never live a normal life because he must always be moving from place to place to stay ahead of the law enforcement. In either case, he loses. In the end, he decides to give up trying to keep escaping, and decides to write books from prison instead. I believe he finally made it out of prison on a legal technicality, and was freed to live a normal life.

I've read many books about escape but most are POW's or convict stories from early in the century. This is one of the few that takes place in more modern times & in North America. Even though I have read of lots of daring escapes this guys really impressed me with how good he was at escaping. Memorable book.

How a Village Raised a Child

A heartwarming window into how a village raised a child, as James Edward Alexander shares his growing up years in Valdosta, Georgia. You gain insight into the living conditions, economic and social constraints, and cultural interactions of the 1930s and 1940s in the Deep South. Besides pure pleasure reading, this is a great item for schools to illuminate the times and the development of an unique individual.

This is a wonderful book, lovingly written about his growing up years for the author's grandchildren. It is also a book that should be required reading for school children today, as it describes a time and an era of which many children are oblivious to. I challenge anyone to read this book, so full of warm and poignant memories, to keep a dry eye. It is the kind of book you want to read in one sitting with a nice cup of tea and cookies nearby.

I grew up a 'white boy' in Washington, DC. during the same years James Edward grew up in southern Georgia. The difference is now, 60 + years later, as plain as "black and white". James' description of family and school life in the black, segreated south tells me that he enjoyed relationships within his family and community that never existed in mine.
I thoroughly enjoyed this man's writings and only hope he follows through with more of his memories in later editions. And, I also hope he finally wound up with a copy of Black Beauty that he could call his own!

"Hamptons Bohemia" is a lovely coffee table book, but it is much more than that. It is a well-researched, thorough history of the artistic life of the Hamptons from the 18th Century to the present day.

The illustrations were an important part of my enjoyment of this book. Almost every page contains a painting by a Hamptons artist, or an offbeat photograph of a group of Hamptons writers or painters. And the illustrations are beautifully done.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

It's no surprise that artists and writers were among the first to be inspired by the natural beauty of the Hamptons. It's also no surprise that celebrities, hangers-on, and wannabees followed soon after. What some may not know is that the Hamptons exerted their draw on the creative community long before Jackson Pollock and his pals put it on the map. This book eloquently conveys the allure of this magical place and the entertaining goings-on that occur when the world's finest artists and writers intermingle.

This book is must for all flower essence practitioners and essence lovers. This collection covers all of the foundational information about flower essences in a easy and enjoyable manner. Martine and Julian Barnard, along with their own line of Flower Essences, Healing Herbs (the same 38 individual essences that Bach created), have brought the richness and power of Bach's quality work further out into the world.

Great in-sight and understanding to the magical healing world of Edward Bach's Flower Remedies.

Flowers that heal

The introduction contains a brief history of Dr Bach and his discovery of the flower remedies, followed by sections on the preparation of the essences and information on the flowering periods.

The main body of the book is a detailed treatment of each of the 38 remedies, from Agrimony to Willow. Each entry has an affirmation and indication (what problems it is effective for) in Bach's own words. There are also full color photographs of the whole plant and the flower, plus black and white illustrations of these.

These entries also contain detailed discussions on why a specific flower heals a specific condition, and provide the locality, identification and information on the preparation of the essence. This excellent guide on Dr Bach's flower essences concludes with a bibliography.

I have personally found Dr Bach's and other flower essences to be helpful for a variety of conditions. This book is an asset to the literature on this gentle and non-intrusive healing modality. I highly recommend it.

I have been using flower essences (and reading books on flower essences) for over a decade, and this book is my all time favorite. It helps me focus in on exactly the right essence for the occasion, even when I am a bit unsure on which one to chose. I think the reason for that is that the authors know the English flower essences so intimately and that it is as though they are lending you their years of focus and knowledge on a spiritual as well as an intellectual level. If you get the book, try holding it in your hands and asking for guidance on a particular problem, then open the book. Notice if reading about the essence that you open to provides you with deeper insight into the problem beyond what you might have had on your own. It has for me.

A classic standard

Review Date: 2008-05-12
This dictionary is an old standard, and still very helpful. It is organized by roots. This means that all words are listed under the consonantal root (usually three consonants), regardless of what additional consonants or vowels have been added at the beginning or elsewhere. When I was a beginner in Hebrew, I found this system difficult to follow. However, with practice I started to get used to which roots lost their first consonant in derived or conjugated forms, and which ones had unstable second and third consonants. Now I can use this dictionary without much difficulty.

If you are a beginner in Hebrew, this dictionary is definitely a good one to plan to get, but you would be better served initially by A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament: Based upon the Lexical Work of Ludwig Koehler and Walter Baumgartner. This dictionary organizes words alphabetically rather than by roots, a feature which saves beginners a lot of frustration. As you progress, you should also consider getting a much more recent comprehensive lexicon of Biblical Hebrew, The Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament, 2 volume set. This dictionary is based on much more recent scholarship that Brown-Driver-Briggs, but it is considerably more expensive, so BDB is an economical choice for good, if not cutting edge, scholarship. In case it matters to you, the edition I am reviewing here is the one without Strong's numbers. I have no interest in Strong's numbers, but if you find them helpful, take a look at this edition of BDB: Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon.

Why a lexicon? "In the beginning was the WORD." Word usage is enormously helpful to Biblical understanding. H.W.F. Gesenius (mid 1800's) is acclaimed as the Noah Webster of Old Testament Hebrew lexicons (dictionary). He brings to the Old Testament a wonderful blend of Christian/Jewish background and insight. Be sure to note not only the word you are looking up, but also the words that surround it, for they too often lend very interesting and even uncanny insight (divine providence).

This is a great Hebrew lexicon with detailed entries with references to the other semitic languages such as Aramaic, Arabic, Syriac, and Ethiopic. In fact, it even has a biblical Aramaic lexicon as an appendix.

Should be required reading for all parents going through a divorce. This book really puts the kids first, and discusses how children of varying ages will react differently to divorce. It gives the absolute best advice for keeping your children healthy both during and after of a divorce. I send this book to all my friends who are contemplating or experiencing a divorce.

this book is the best.

I have many problems with the divorce I started 6 years ago. The statistical information, research, details, and background information of what divorce does to families is very helpful. The way these are helpful to me is that they show what the results have been with many of the particular choices that divorces have raised in the past, and what current trends in these are showing.
The descriptions that are given about what feelings children endure are gripping. I came to truly understand what our three have had to bury in their beings. Now, before its too late, however, I have unique insight that will enable me to help them --hopefully with their father.
I cannot write too much about the value of knowing what divorce does to children, how to help them heal, how to take charge of the situation that seems hopeless, and what to NOT do.

Henry and his best friend Thelma Fung live in Chinatown, New York and help a kind old man make kites. However, Tony Guglioni and his gang of friends of Little Italy, who don't like Chinese people, keep destroying their kites with rocks. Finally, Henry has had enough. He gathers his friends and meets Tony's gang head-on. But there may be more than one reason they are throwing rocks...

With a realistic, non-violent ending and gorgeous paintings, this book is a amazing, unique read. Review by Sarah

I knew J.A. growing up and she always had a very big imagination. I am glad to see her put that imagination to good use. She knows how to keep it going so you cannot put the book down. Right when one thing is solved another hangs in the balance. you never know what is around the corner. It is a suspense holder. I encourage J.A. to write another very soon. It has been a while since I curled up with a good book. Someday when she is a well known author she will have to write a biography. That WILL be some very interesting reading.

The hidden seeker kept me in total suspense. It dealt with so many different situations that it was like reading a soap opera and getting a literature lesson all at once. It also had a little bit of everything in it. JA has the potential to become a great author. I want to see more books by her in the future. JA keep the books coming. On the next one it would be nice to see an about the author caption on the cover. JA seems to have quite an imagination , which served her well as she wrote this book. A+ for Jennifer.

Next to the Word of God, no other book ever written has shown me more of our potential in Christ. The radical message presented cuts right through "Todays" Christianity to what is essential in your walk: HIM. This will be one book that you will find yourself buying numerous copies of to give out to those seeking for the truth. Read it and you'll never be the same!!!!

After so many years of trying to live the Christian life, and after so many years of suffering the guilt and inability to do so, in steps Gene Edwards and revolutionizes everything! This book gets into the bedrock eternal nature and life of God. I never saw my life as being a "species from two realms"! Gene will walk you through the heavenlies such as no other author to date can. How many times were we told that in order to be a good Christian we must pray, read the bible, tithe, speak in tongues etc..? You wont find these cliche formulas here. Gene will take you to eternity past and get a glimpse of just how the Father lived the Christian life. It's simplicity and beauty will impact your life for as long as we dwell in our mortal tents! Be prepared to be confronted with what you thought was true! You may have to re-evaluate everything you've learned regarding the Christian life!

If you're a fan of Hilary Knight's artwork (and if you're not, you ought to be), you will definitely want this book. Those who are only familiar with Knight's wonderful pen and ink drawings for Eloise and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle will be amazed at the beauty of his full color illustrations. This book is good enough for either your child's/nephew's/niece's bookshelf, or (in my case) your own. The illustrations of a young boy and girl slowly becoming part of the tale are beautifully rendered. I am glad to see so many Knight books on the market again, and hope that i will get to see some more.

I am not a huge fan of old "nursery rhyme" type poetry, but this book caught my eye and my 3 yr old boys and I love it! The illustrations are simply amazing as each page unfolds from 2 children visiting an eccentric, storytelling neighbor to the children becoming the owl and pussycat. My boys immediately noticed the firepole in the man's house among other curiosities. As the children enjoy a snack and the man reads the poem, the floor turns to water and the window seat to a pea green boat. The bespeckled little boy becomes an owl and girl becomes a cat. The poem is read a second time with them as the main characters and the illustrations cleary 'telling' the story. Just as fluidly, the children return to human form and their mothers call them for dinner as the poem winds down. This book would certainly be a wonderful addition to a classic nursery rhymes collection.
