A Great Beginning into Catholic Theology

Review Date: 2006-11-29
I am pursuing a Masters Degree in Catholic Theology, and have read quite a bit of theology from a variety of sources, yet I find myself continuing to return to this book because it truly is a great introduction to fundamental ideas essential to our faith. It is a "first step" in "faith seeking understanding" that I think will leave you wanting to learn more. Even if you don't read any further on these five ideas, it gives you a concise, intelligent introduction to these vital topics and will help you in your journey of faith. I have given several copies away to friends and those interested in "learning more about the Catholic faith." That should tell you something good about this book.

These ideas are great not because they are good, but also they serve as general tools for working on other ideas in the Catholic Community. What is the Immaculate Conception? A structural and solid explanation is given here. That which is foundational is also novel. The author offers a "net" that readers can use to gather many Catholic topics together.

Despite the Synopsis...

Don't let the inaccuracies in the on-line synopsis (scathingly detailed by Christenson below) prevent you from acquiring this book. The author has researched and accurately described life in the Klondike/Yukon, and selected great images to accompany his text. The portions dealing with Larss' life outside the Yukon are similarly well done.

Excellent reading. Highly recommended to all interested in the gold rush. Although some facts may be incorrect, the majority of the book is very well written.

Review Date: 1999-02-05
The synopsis is incorrect about some things. Gold was DISCOVERED in the Klondike river area in 1896 -- not 1898. Although prospectors who had been in the Yukon for years learned about the strike very quickly (and staked the best claims pronto), it took nearly a year for word of the discovery to reach the "outside world" (e.g., the contiguous United States) in a way that captured the public's imagination -- especially when the SS PORTLAND landed in Seattle in July 1897 with the now-famous "Ton of Gold" from the Klondike area. The first stampeders arrived in Alaska in the fall of 1897, followed by thousands soon after. Most stampeders went over the mountains into British Columbia and then the Yukon Territory via Dyea (over Chilkoot Pass) or via Skagway (over White Pass) during the winter of 1897-1898. The synopsis is blatantly incorrect that thousands of stampeders "arrived in blinding snowstorms"; this is absolute nonsense. Arrived WHERE? The bulk of stampeders arrived in Dyea or Skagway. While it does snow there, it does not snow all the time. It rains a lot. To imply that all stampeders arrived ANY where along the Klondike gold rush route in "blinding snowstorms" is unnecessary hype -- and simply not true.

This book provides a well-rounded look into the life of P.E. Larss, especially about his life before and after the Klondike gold rush. Photographs have been well-selected to illustrate his craft and the events he was involved in.

This book started out as required reading for me, but I ended up reading it from cover to cover in three days! I was impressed with it because it thoroughly covered all issues ever raised in women's issues, and offered many references for those of us interested in researching further. I especially liked the fact that it is a compilation of writings put together in a logical, dynamic way, each section feeding off the other. This book is a must-read for women, but also instrumental for men in their understanding of womens' experiences.

Excellent Book!! MUST READ

This book is a must have for students of womyn's studies or anyone interested in gender violence. This compilation of articles is an excellent balanced look at gender violence through an interdisciplinary perspective. Violence against womyn is a extensive topic studied, but as the title indicates, gender violence is the theme of the book, therefore, violence targeted at men and womyn is discussed. Also the list of sources is quite extensive for further research. This is definitely one of the best books on gender violence out there!!

We were first introduced to the Geronimo Stilton series with an audio book from a Wendy's kid's meal and fell in love with the series. My children (4 and 2 years) love listening to the audio books in the car and there is enough adult humor to the books so parents will enjoy listening to them too. Edward Herrmann does a wonderful job narrating these books.

My son who is in the first grade, received his first set of Geronimo Stilton books on c.d. from a friend. We listened to them in the car, and the entire family enjoyed the stories so much that no one was allowed to listen unless we were all present because not even the adults wanted to miss a thing! We purchased the next set of books, which delighted my son with their colorful words and illustrations, mysterious plots and exotic locations. Since then, I think we have bought a total of 28 books in the series, and my only complaint is that I have caught my son reading under his covers at 11:00 o'clock at night! Any material that encourages my children to read in their every waking moment is a winner in my book!

The initial section of this book has nothing to do with the plot and is very portentious and incomprehensible. Both I and my wife found it off-puting. However, starting on page 13, this is a superb, beautiful, and thought-provoking novel that I recommend unhesitatingly.

Wistful, poignant and beautifully written, this is a touching and elegaic novel. Blending fact with imaginary events, Hamilton Paterson takes an extraordinary, but true, event from Elgar's life and constructs around it a simple but fabulous narrative about a man at a creative crisis. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Music lovers as well as those who enjoy fine writing will find Hamilton-Paterson's imaginary account of a voyage up the Amazon by Edward Elgar not only entertaining and thought-provoking, but also ultimately very revealing of the contradictions and conflicts in Elgar's character. Hamilton-Paterson's research has been as thorough as his sympathy for his protagonist is obviously deep. This novel won the Whitbread prize for best first fiction

Great book. I think that anybody looking for a team leadership position in any industry will absolutely benefit from reading this book. The book really made me think on how I would answer those questions myself and I incorporated on my answers some key points that I got from the book. The general advice on job interviewing is very good too. Even though I have read several books in job searching, I found advice not strictly related to project management that I have not seen elsewhere and I found very useful. One think I liked about the book was that it goes straight to the point and covers in a few pages what other books might cover in chapters.

I have a job thanks to this book.

I have a job thanks to this book.
As a recently divorced woman with two kids I had to go back to the job force and was really rusty in the whole job finding process and was getting no where fast. After coming back from my third job interview with no prospects of a call back I started looking for some help and decided to give this book a try. I was skeptical that they could actually have the answers for me but the book quickly tells you how you can apply the answers to your own situation. In my first interview after I read the book, I tried one of the answers and seeing that I was getting smiles and nodding at the other side of the table I used their suggestions for two more questions and lo and behold I was offered the job the next day!.

What starts out seemingly as another familiar fiction novel soon becomes a mystery thriller with environmental implications.
The author intertwines several interesting characters around a plot about an investigator called to fly to a Caribbean island to look into the mysterious death of the local dolphin population. Even though there is nothing unique about the first few chapters, the story starts taking twists and turns involving romance, guns and drugs. You don't even want to put this book down until you find out what happens next, and then you keep reading and reading and reading all the way to the end. This is not your typical adventure book. This is the stuff that entertaining movies are made of. I highly recommend it.

New author, Thomas Cole Edwards, has hit a home run with his Gin Clear Water publication. If you liked Clancy and Grisham you are sure to be wowed by the Edwards version of suspense, mystery and Latin America politics as he weaves a page turner of all of these traditional topics that are combined with romance on a tropical Carribean island. It is a good read and worth every penny of the cost.

I've never done any commentary reading before this and found this to be very well written and informative. I like how he picks out choice words in the Greek and re-defines them in their original context. He is very faithful to the original meaning and that is why I appreciate this commentary so much. Easy to read, well written, smooth...what else could you ask for?

One might think that in such a small package there would be no new insights. That would be a faulty assumption, as Towns' book is a real gem. He doesn't obsess over every unorthodox scholar's opinions, but focuses on the message of John as inspired by the Holy Spirit. Towns has a deserved reputation as a great communicator, and this well-written book is no exception. Unlike many Johannine commentators, Towns clearly holds to verbal inerrancy. Buy it!

Not too hard, not too soft, just right!

Addressed from a dispensational, pre-trib, pre-millenial perspective, this book (one of the first three in the new "21st Century Biblical Commentary Series" - the other two being "Romans" and "Revelation") is a superb commentary even if you don't fall into the camps above. It does not treat the reader as a total beginner, nor does it expect the reader to be a learned theologian (though both groups will benefit from this commentary). Covering essential doctrines, terms, and concepts, "The Gospel of John - Believe and Live" is an excellent start to the series and an excellent addition to one's personal library.
