I have read this book and i think its just one of the greatest stories of all times. It describes the life of a girl, Andrea, who moves to Barcelona to study in a post-war society. She lives in her grandmother's house with her aunt Angustias, her uncles Juan and Roman, Juan's wife, Gloria, their son, and the maid, Antonia. Carmen Laforet perfectly describes every situation, like the impression she got when she first walked into her new home, or her fragile relationship with Ena, the beautiful girl in college, who becomes her best friend, an who also is strangely attracted to Roman. This is the circle of situations in qhich the story develops. I highly recommend it.

I had to read this book first for a class but loved it so much I wanted a copy of my own. Carmen Laforet is an extremely talented author and a great read if you enjoy works from the posguerra period in Spain. I found it easier to read than some works by other posguerra authors (Spanish is my second language so I sometimes struggle with some vocabulary).

"Nada" es el encanto original de Barcelona, la tenebrosa antigüedad de algunas calles, la noche como un compendio de aventuras confusas. Su virtud reside más en la rebuscada sicología de Andrea y sus congéneres que en la eficiente escritura de Carmen Laforet. Más que cualquier otra cosa, la casa de la calle Aribau es el logro mayor del libro, quedando para siempre su decadente y asfixiante impronta en el imaginario colectivo, un espacio habitualmente esquivo a las construcciones literarias.

A very good read.

This is an excellent novel. From the very beginning Carmen Laforet manages to create a very interesting and convincing atmosphere, the characters are full and the plot does not stagnate. I have read it several times and always enjoyed it.

I am very new in horses. Living in a small city my whole life, I never had the opportunity to own a horse, or even be around them much. But I have always loved them, and know that someday I will have one when I live in an appropriate area. So I want to take my time from now until then to do as much research as I can on horses so I am prepared.
Going to book stores, I do not have much luck finding books that are informative. Most of them focus on one small category of horse ownership or history, os just focus on photos.
So I came online and looked through all the horse books on Amazon and read reviews. This book got great reviews and multiple times refered to as the best horse book that exists. So I figured I'd take a chance and order it!
I was not disappointed! This book covers EVERYTHING! It has a 2 page spread dedicated to each breed and includes their history, size comparison to humans, temperament, etc. with beautiful photos of each breed.
It also has so much general information on horses including evolution, veterinary care, grooming, showing, etc.
If you are looking for one big horse book that covers all topics and breeds, I very highly recommend you go with this one!

I love this book! It has so much info! It tells about lots of breeds, and they're all mixed through the book. I'm glad that it tells about my favorite breeds as well as others that I've never heard of, or I don't know a lot about. This book has over 400 pages, but it dosen't cover horse care. My local librery bought it for $40, but I don't know how much it costs here (Amazon). Get this awesome book, it covers so much, including the Spanish riding school and a horse called Coogenhogan. This book is high on my wishlist, and it's a wonderful book. I would like to know about the revisesd edition, if there is one. Buy this book, no matter how much it costs!!!!

The New Horse Encyclopedia
The New Horse Encyclopedia is your average encyclopedia. With facts diagrams, photos and all that jazz. You can find anything in there that you need to know. I'm not saying it's fun to read but it is easy to understand and it is quick and decisive in telling you stuff you need or want to know about horses. If you don't mind reading facts and if you don't know much about horses than this is the book for you. If you don't like reading facts than don't pick up this book.

This is a fabulous work. The book is large every page is like 2 pages of a regular size book. Great photos on all of the major breeds. The history section in the front is very informative. I read it cover to cover over time and this is the book I refer to when I want to show a breed to a friend.

What if you have already read another editing book? Read this and then go back and read your other book. The author has a lifetime of experience in Hollywood and explains how Hollywood movies are edited, at least until the 1970's (most still use these methods). The methods described are the standards that form the basic language of the craft. Another plus is that the work is very concise and a good read into the history of film.

this is an excellent book on this very delicate craft. I also liked "the eye is quicker" but this was very informative and a better read. there is no substitute for actually editing and what works is hard to descibe in words but this book demonstrates some very subtles points and Mr. Dmytyk is a film maker. If your just starting read the eye is quicker but if you have some experience and want to go to the next level, this is a good one.

Clear and authoritative guide to the principles and practices of film editing
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-30
This is one of the classic texts on the principles and practices of modern film editing. While it was written nearly thirty years ago and refers occasionally to the techniques of linear editing on actual film, its summary of the rules of good editing remains as relevant today as ever, even for filmmakers who will only ever edit video on their computers. Editing is where the film is brought to life and Dmytryk outlines in a very clear and engaging way the basic considerations that allow that to take place. The author was not only a major filmmaker but a master teacher, and it shows in both the precision and clarity of his explanations.

What makes the guide as fresh today as when it appeared is that it is primarily not about technical considerations but about how an editor has to think in order to construct seamless and engaging scenes that are true to the overall story of a film. At the same time this thinking is given a practical application. The focus is on why rather than how, but it goes much further in explaining the basics of what to do when editing and how to put together a scene than many other books out there.

Dmytryk makes a distinction between a cutter and an editor, and cutting is merely competence with the equipment of film editing, whether it is a moviola or Final Cut Pro. Editing is always thinking, and is as creative in its approach to the film as shot as directing is creative in its approach to the film as written. Subtle variations in editing can change completely the tone or mood of a film. Dmytryk illustrates his points with several examples from major films he directed or edited (e.g. The Caine Mutiny, Murder, My Sweet and many more). Dmytryk is a master of his craft and is generous in his description of what it takes to pursue this mastery. This little book is an indispensible part of any filmmaker or film lover's library.

An excellent book showing a wide variety of full body painting images. The entire body has been used as a canvas. The painting itself tends to display a course nature, in that there is a lack of crisp and sharp lines, the painted segments tend to merge. The images cover the entire body of the models and are shot in a variety of poses. There are about five pages of arranged photographs displaying the model for each artist. A must for the coffee table and one to definitely weigh it done.

This collection of body paintings reveal incredible skill, and also lots of luscious ideas and provacative thoughts whether or not you have any special interest in Body Painting. Each model has been painted in unique ways which reflect the depth and richness of talent of each artist who painted them. Some take a whimsical approach, and others move in the world of political statements, and then there are those who really move off of this plain of existence into imaginary worlds of the spirit and the soul. This is book not only for body painters and make-up artists, the work here is for all of those interest in contemporary visual art, dance, costume, image, and more. In time, this art form will stand alone as a truly "new" form of cultural sculpture.

Painted Bodies is not a book to read in, but to look at. It includes a wonderful collection of 45 different artists, showing their own interpretation on the subject. The manner Roberto Edwards photographed them is the best compliment a body painter can expect. Above all, the marvellous layout makes the fantastic finishing touch to this great book. Absolutely recommended!

Caution: This book primarily contains images of female and male models, including one pregnant woman, who are mostly adorned only with paint. If such exposure offends you, avoid this book.

If you buy only one photography book this year, you would probably be very pleased with this one!

Painted Bodies is a unique art book in my experience. The vision began with the photographer, Roberto Edwards, who persuaded 45 Chilean artists to paint human models in honor of Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492, where he found Native Americans wearing body paint. But the heritage of painting bodies goes back much earlier than that.

Skin, hair, and human protuberances accept paint in ways much different from canvas. Some of the artists sought to create a canvas-like experience, while others built on the uniqueness of the human base. The designs were everything from literal internal body parts to faces, to literal objects (including simulated clothing), to calligraphy, to various abstractions. In some cases, props were added to transform the model into a magical being only remotely related to a human. Some designs sought to obliterate and obscure the body, while others used parts of the body as a visual pun (turning a nipple into a nose). In some cases, the body became a sculpture. In other cases, the body was a dancing performer, caught in poses like what a strobe light potrays of motion.

Some of the models have unusual bodies which become part of the artistic appearance. In other cases, the models are remarkably beautiful and are transformed into idealist creations and concepts. Some models have personalities that burst forth from beneath the paint, and add an important note of acting ability in other instances. For example, many of the models are portrayed as mimes . . . and are shown in the characteristic poses of mimes.

To all of this variety, the photographer added another important layer of art. He has arranged the images starkly against large white and black negative spaces to help focus your attention on the creation. The models are usually followed through for at least 5 pages, and sometimes as much as 8 pages to show a flow of the artistic expression. The order, angle, and superimposition of images are quite interesting of themselves. So there's also the design of the book's layout to enjoy and consider.

What is most impressive is that all of these layers of art are well done, culminating in very fine paper and reproduction quality for the images.

This show originally appeared in 1991, and was remounted as a series of large murals. Traveling in the latter form, over one and a half million people had seen the show by 1996 when this third edition was created.

The essays could have been stronger, but the images speak so eloquently that not much introduction is needed. So just glide onto enjoying the images!

I thought that all but four of the artists did a remarkable job. Many really impressed me including the work by Roberto Geisse, Francisco de la Puente, Jose Basso, Lucia Wiser, Benito Rojo, Ricardo Maffei, Cristian Abelli, Paulina Humeres, Eduardo Garcia de la Sierra, Gracia Barrios, Gonzalo Mezza, and Carmen Aldunate. If you are like me, you will be interested in learning more about their work. The book contains brief biographies of each artist.

I also came away very impressed with the quality and variety of art that was represented by these artists from Chile. I felt encouraged to visit Chile so that I might see more of that country's art, which is seldom included in shows that I visit in the United States, Canada, or Europe.

How else can the arts interact with one another to create additional levels of refinement? I came away wondering what could be done with a video version of this concept, to include original music as well.

See the full potential of creativity around and within you!

I had looked at this book for a long time, but delayed buying it. I finally bought it as a supplement to other, more technical books I have. It gives me the information I need without numbing my mind in geek-speak. During the first 24 hours after buying it, this book got me out of several difficult problems quickly and effortlessly. Surprisingly, it is not the diagnostic flow charts I have found most helpful, but the book's running text located by way of index entries has been the most helpful to me in solving the problems I had, one of which was the Blue Screen of Death related to the recognition of a hard drive on an OS installation.

This book will help you diagnose the problem, fix the problem( or find out how to get more info)and most importantly, how to keep your PC running at it`s best. I had the Blue screen of Death,( but not anymore)and I was on the verge of buying a new PC. Think what I saved. My PC has never worked better. Thanks Mark!

I have been involved with computers for more than 20 years, and this book is the best troubleshooting book that I have seen for computers. The information is very well organized and easy to use. There are many flow charts in the book to quickly resolve problems, and there is a very helpful table listing different problem symptoms and solutions. The book also has in-depth chapters on certain problems. It is a book that can easily be used for quick reference for a problem, or it can be studied in detail. Blank screens, software and hardware problems, faulty power supplies, and input/output devices are all discussed in the book. Solving just one problem would pay for the book, and you'll be glad you bought it after using it several times.

If you are tired of wasting your time using "tech support" this is the book you should have.

Practical Networking is a valuable book for anyone looking for a job, and is equally useful for those new to the job search as well as those who may have been job hunting for a while. In fact, the book is unique because of the many creative networking ideas it offers the job seeker: there are more contacts out there than perhaps we may realize. The author encourages job seekers to think `outside of the help wanted ads' for a more inspired and effective job hunting approach. The author points out that networking is not a new idea, but the book's suggestions and tips for using business and social contacts goes beyond basic networking and practically illustrates how you can reach out to those you know. In so doing, the book also details how anyone can be helpful to another's job search. A highly recommended tool for creative job searching.

A fascinating first-person account by someone who's obviously made a life-long avocation of observing what really works when looking for a job. The author speaks from experience--of knowing how scary it is to be without a job, or stuck in a job that is not right for you. The solution to your problem may well be with the people you are closest to: your family, friends, coworkers, or other people you interact with frequently. (Your barber may also cut the hair of the very person you need to contact at your "dream" company.)

What you have to do is develop these priceless assets, and the author shows you how it's done, indeed, how he's actually done it many times. The book has an easily readable style and lots of nuggets of great information told through anecdotes. A secondary, but crucial, message that the book sends is that you can be someone else's job salvation, too. What goes around, comes around. I highly recommend this book.

Prayer is an act that can be selfish or charitable. "Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim: A Personal Manual for Prayer and Ritual" is an anthology of prayers and other spiritual rituals not specific to any one religion, focusing solely on the spiritual aspects of all religions and how their followers connect with them. Suggesting that readers pray for all people instead of solely for themselves and their family, "Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim" is an ideal gift for anyone cultivating their spiritual side. Highly recommended for community library spirituality collections.

This book has always made it back to the top of my book pile on my night stand -- for the past 15 years. It presents a deeply spiritual approach to prayer with pauses for silent prayer and meditation. I especially like the prayers by time of day, day of the week and season of the year. There are prayers for different life transitions and for different moods. I like the focus on nature and on the vastness of the universe as witnessed by contemplating outer space. I am a spirit having a human experience. In this way, I can relate to the concept of a planetary pilgrim. I feel as though my life is a pilgrimage. And my life itself is continuous prayer of gratitude. This book supports me in this perspective. I am grateful for having found this book. It has enriched my prayer life beyond measure.

Sorry but why can't he just be a private eye who happens to be Gay. This generation of gays has an unfortunate obsesion with "gay-ness" being the core of their identity. How sad. He also seemed to have no sense of self in terms of why he was doing anything he was doing. That being said the confrontation in the bar was handled well and the character almost came to life for me. Too bad the govenor couldn't just have been regular philandering, enough of the gay angle if it's not a gay focused mystery. I like horses and horse racing so I'd probably keep reading for a while to see if he softened up on the gay pride and focused on the mystery.

The author takes you on a titliating journey through a myriad of interesting landscapes, places that most of us have never, nor will ever find ourselves. I sat on the edge of my seat, on more than one occasion, as this page turner left me wanting more. I truly felt acquainted with Kentucky's politics, horse-racing, and underground world, after this read. I give this book my best review! Read it or miss out!

This excerpt for "The Pride of Lyons" is absolutely wonderful. The first line draws you in provoking your curiosity. The plot line itself keeps you captivated by throwing unexpected turns the readers way. With slight hints of humor that keep it even more stimulating. This excerpt kept me on my toes and entertained, and I would love to read the rest of it.

I'm impressed. This story jumped right out of the starting gate and into the plot. Definitely an interesting approach to the detective novel. I wasn't expecting a gay male protagonist in place of the usual gristled drunken womanizer. Mr. Peters maintained the feel of the genre with colorful descriptions of people and places that make for an excellent read. I'm intrigued and interested in where the story will take me, best of luck in the contest because I'd love to read the rest.

I enjoyed it as a teenager who had never heard about Rickenbacker, and I've enjoyed it as an adult.

To me, reading this book is like sitting at the foot of one's grandfather. He doesn't care about political correctness, he is somewhat out of touch with what's in and what's out, he's both old fashioned and thinking about the future, he speaks openly and directly without caring what people think, and he tells the most interesting and incredible stories. He isn't modest, and often comes across as arrogant -- but like a grandfather who tells great stories, you accept the fact that here is a man who has a lot to be immodest about!

This book is absolutely incredible. It is a must read for any American citizen. It should be required reading for all school children. Although I knew who Rickenbacker was, I had no idea he was THIS influential to the development of America as we know it today. What is amazing are his predictions for the future in the last chapter. Published in 1967, many of them are bulls-eye accurate for today. Simply awesome.

Mr. Rickenbacker was always ahead of his time. The pity is that those who can see and plan for the future are never listened to by those who are supposed to be the leaders of this country.

If only Eddie and Billy Mitchell had been listened to right after WWI the Second World War might never have taken place.

The intense supidity of Franklin Roosevelt comes through, throughout this book. Just think, this country sent plutonium to Russia so that they could develop their own Atomic Bomb to wipe out the U.S. and no one even tried to stop the shipments.

Those in the leadership roles of this country very rarily look to the future. Visionaries seem to be continuously scoffed at, but still heroes like Eddie Rickenbacker come forward.

Eddie Rickenbocker has been, is and always will be one of the greatest heroes this country has ever produced.

Eddie Rickenbacker is what "The American Dream" is all about! His book should make anyone proud to be an American and should be required reading by all High School Seniors.

I wish that we could have had Mr Rickenbacker in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era. I know he would have brought a lot more of our men and women home alive!

This is a great book written by a great person!

I may have hated Ben Franklin's autobiography, but by loving this book so much it proves I have nothing against autobiograhies. I guess because you hear of Franklin so much and he lived so long ago you'd expect him to tell you something worth hearing. EVR, on the other hand, I had never heard of before reading the book so I had no expectations whatsoever. Ed lived an incredible life and even if only half of the book was true the same could be said(some of the stuff he tells about is so fantastic that it sounds like it can;t possibly be true - like survivin in a raft in the middle of the ocean in the midst of WWII with no food or water for a month and living to tell about it.) The best part was early on when he flew in WWI. Some of his finncial whellings and dealings seem irrelevant, but they can be skimmed with no loss to the story. His rise to success while remaining basically a normal person is pretty inspirational. A must read.

Not only does this book have all the inspirational and motivational aspects mentioned in the other reviews, it is also exciting and amazing! The close calls that Rickenbacker had often during his life make for an exceptional story of a wonderful role model--plus a fast-moving plot. This book, although dealing with many serious subjects maintains a positive tone full of compassion and a love of life. I first read this book when I was 10 or 11 and have been reading it regularly ever since. Many of my friends, as teenagers, have also found this an incredible and enjoyable book. Definitely a must read!

I'm seventh cousin to U.S. Grant but have always had tremendous respect for, and interest in, the family of General Robert E. Lee. Altho we know that General Lee was a man of impecable morals and a champion of valor and honor, less has been known of his immediate family. Anne Carter Zimmer's book gives us a window in time into the life of the family of her great grandparents and a look at 19th century housekeeping. I grew up in Ohio before moving South and some of Mary Lee's household hints were utilized by my grandmother and mother. This is a fantastic book, warm, humorous, informative and with photos and shetches enough to make one sense that they might have felt at home in the Lee household.

Please, Anne, let us hear from you in the future. I'd very much like to know more about your singular family!

Anyone who is interested in knowing more about the personal side of Gen. Robert E. Lee and the people who stood behind him and allowed him to become great (his family) will enjoy this insight into their everyday lives and the heritage the author (Lee's great-granddaughter) has had to live up to throughout her life.

I would strongly recommend this.

This book is a great one for providing us a glimpse into life over 100 years ago. It is hard to imagine what a woman had to do back then to create the genteel life. Every household had to be self-sufficient, as this remarkable volume shows, making its own foodstuff, soap and cleansers. I loved this book and have shared it with good friends.

Marvelous weaving together of food and family history.

Mix together some spicy ingredients of Southern history, add "receipts" (aka recipes) for food, plus personal memoir, and a fascinating book is ready for you to devour or to send to friends as a gift.
What a marvelous, brilliant weaving together of the family history of the Robert E. Lee family, along with insider Civil War history, social history, food history, family characters and so on, have been put together by Anne Carter Zimmer, who gives us recipes one longs to try. I definitely want to attempt the Charlotte Russe and certainly the Sally Lunn. (Wish I had the courage for the oyster dish where, halfway throughout, you throw out one batch of oysters and add a fresh batch.) When I read the book's first line, "We didn't make much of ancestors when I was growing up," (this from the great-grandaughter of Robert E. Lee), I knew I was in touch with an authentic voice and that I would love this book. And love it I did.
