Unquestionably the best book I have ever read, or will read, in my entire life!

An Overdue Biography of a Political Reformer and an Irish Patriot
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-21
Historian Richard Allen Morton has accomplished a rare feat: while many thesis papers written by graduate students have been adapted for publication as books, few have been written with such brevity, conciseness and precision as to educate, entertain and inform readers who are not faculty members sitting on the dissertation committee. Too many dissertations seem to be compiled by writers who think that history is better if served by the pound and the heavier a book is, the better it is! Not so!

Edward F. Dunne has the distinction of being the only man to serve as the Mayor of Chicago and, later in his career, as the Governor of Illinois. To date, Dunne is the only Roman Catholic to have served as Illinois Governor. He was also an active leader in Chicago's Irish community. Dunne served as the first President of the influential Irish Fellowship Club. In his retirement, Dunne compiled a multivolume history of Illinois and its prominent citizens.

Dunne has been identified as a progressive politician and a supporter of Bryan Democracy. Morton documents how the Progressive political movement faltered in Illinois as political spoilsmen and party regulars such as Roger Sullivan (Democratic) and William Lorimer and his protege William Hale Thompson (Republican) ultimately prevailed over the reform minded progressives in their respective parties. This unfortunate trend has continued to the present day.

The Dunne family remained somewhat prominent in Cook County. Dunne's son and grandson followed in Edward F. Dunne's footsteps and served in the local judiciary. I actually met the late Arthur Dunne when he served in Chancery.

Dynamic history at its best!

I bought this book as part of my research for my master's thesis on Midwestern progressivism. I expected the usual rather dull factual account. Instead I was pleasantly surprised by the comprehensive research, highly readable prose, and the profundity of the interpretation. Moreover, I learned far more about the realities of politics and society during the progressive period than I have from far more celebrated works. This is good history, and like all good history it focuses upon the past and not the personal saws of the writer. A bit pricey, I have never regretted the purchase. If you are looking for dynamic history at its best, check this out!

This is the story of the final days of the Holocaust when the Final Solution was inflicted upon the Jews of Hungary with devestating fury by the nazis and their local collaborators The Arrow Cross.

This is not a happy book but an insightful one that covers this portion of the bloody social engineering of Hitler's Final Solution, his attrocity against Jews.

Witnessing the murder of Hungarian Jewry

Six eye-witness accounts of the destruction of Hungarian Jewry by the Nazis are at the heart of this work. This and the witnesses return fifty years later to the place of the destruction and their reflection upon this.
Their testimony is part of the sacred act of remembrance of the destruction, and of those destroyed. It is of course a very partial act and can never compensate for the destruction.
With the murder of over four- hundred and fifty thousand Jews were murdered thousands of families, whole worlds.
The mind and heart cannot encompass or understand this.

An intelligent and well written novel with fully fleshed out characters submerged in a time and culture where the stakes are high. A must read for those who enjoy a story of both excitement and richness. The writing is poetic and stays with you long after you finish the page.

John Dunne is one of the most moving and profound spiritual theologians of our day. No one -- believer or unbeliever -- could fail to be moved by this deep meditation on human loneliness and longing. Dunne's use of literary material is striking and always illuminating. I belive I have read every work by Dunne and this is one of his very best.

Drawing from the precepts of many religions and approaches to God, faith, and life, Fr. Dunne crafts an academic but practical guide for achieving closeness to God, then maintaining that closeness while completing our earthly journey in a most humanly-fulfilling manner.

A reader starts a journey with Dunne's hypothetical searcher to experience solitude and

connection: and to discover in both intimacy with God and man. Rather than avoid the struggle inherent in the separation of man from God and man from man, Dunne encourages the spiritual voyager to travel to and fro finding God in both and soul in the gap between mind and body. The author uses Christianity to transcend theology and human psychology and to open a door to experience God in oneself and in mankind.

The British counterpart to Scarpetta
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-05-31
Northwick, England is stunned when the corpses of Mark James and Frances Purves, containing upside down crosses carved onto the bodies, are found. The police fear that this is only the beginning. East Anglia forensic pathologist Samantha Ryan is added to the investigative team in order to assist the police into what appears to have been ritual killings.

The preliminary evidence points towards nightclub owner, Bird, a dabbler in witchcraft. Bird's fingerprints are found inside the car of one of the victims. Worse yet is the fact that the cord from the doorbell to his club is the murder weapon. The police feel that the case is closed and that they have captured the killer. Samantha is the remaining holdout, who thinks that this was too easy for a clever killer like the one they are trying to apprehend.

SILENT WITNESS is a well-written British police procedural that will please fans of Patricia Cornwell since Samantha seems to be the English Scarpetta. The story line is fun and refreshing even though it is derived from the A & E Mystery Movie series. Nigel McCrery has scribed an engrossing tale that will be devoured by those sub-genre readers who enjoy a novel starring a fabulous forensic pathologist.

My sincere hope is that this will be the first of a series of Dr. Sam books. It was intelligent, well paced and was exciting to the very end. I haven't enjoyed a new author so much as when I 'discovered' Patricia Cornwell. This book is absolutely excellent. I recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys good writing as well as murder mysteries.

When Dr. Sam Ryan is introduced, the strong female pathologist, one is stuck by her coldness. But as the story unwinds so does the inadvertent chill surrounding Dr. Ryan. Her character is the driving force for this mystery, becoming the heroine because she thrives on getting things done the right way.

This novel is well written and hauntingly addicting. The ending clenches the true meaning of the word: surprise.

I loved this book! I thoroughly enjoyed Marsha's style of writing and found the book engrossing. It's certainly not necessary to have experienced life with a Bull Terrier to enjoy Wally's story, but Bully owners especially will find themselves laughing out loud in so many places! Reading of Wally's antics and his sweet nature reminded me so much of my two dear departed Bullies.

But it's not just Wally's story that grabs the reader. There are the dogs that came before him, as well as Marsha's and Stephen's personal experiences. I just can't imagine anyone not enjoying "Wally's World"!

I read this book after my mother recommended it. From the very first page that I read, I had a difficult time putting the book down. Ms. Boulton is a very gifted writer who knows how to reel the reader. Every tale that she tells in the book keeps you on your toes. Wally the Wonder Dog is so charming. I have read other dog books, but this one is the best one. While I was reading the book, I felt that Wally was one of my own four-legged babies. I am happy to learn that I am not the only person out there who is obsessed with her dog!
This book is an amazing and heartwarming tribute to an incredible dog who brought so much joy to so many people.

No, this is not a dog story book. It is about principals and principles. The principals are Marsha Boulton, the engaging author/narrator; Stephen Williams, her partner and award winning author; and the titular Wally, a wonderful bull terrier. The principles include courage in meeting the challenges of life, devotion twixt man and dog and values worth fighting for. It is filled with love, wonderful commentaries on life, suspense, outrage and, in the end, a confirmation of those, both man and dog, who employ a zest for living.

1. Edmund Burke said, "No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear"
2. The terrorist had beliefs that gave their lives meaning though what those beliefs were remain contested, theoretically, psychologically, and politically.
3. Some security measures should be taken, for many terrorist are beyond both appeasement and deterrence, but if terrorism is simply matched by escalating violence, then fear will be sovereign in world affairs, and the terrorist will have won some sort of victory.
4. In traditional war, victory is assured by the occupying of ground; in a global war against terrorism not only has territory to be occupied in some sense globally, but also hearts and minds have to be won over.
5. Terror networks need more than weapons: they also need bases, and this is why the US used force against the Taliban government that maintained a close alliance with al-Qaeda.
6. The Caspian sea has become a new vision of a new Saudi Arabia.
7. 9/11 and the global war on terror has not fundamentally altered the dynamic interplay and territoriality and transnationalism.
8. The worlds of force and law collide in ways that are comparable to terror and dialogue. One difference is that the terrorist are always unlawful and there are times when force may be used to disarm and defeat the terrorist. The great danger is that fighting terrorism might provoke ruthless behaviors that represent some sort of victory for the terrorist. The prevent a slide into unlawful violence, a number of condition must be met: 1. all pacific forms must be address to find resolution 2. there must be no doubt about the justice of the cause 3. those responsible for the conduct of the war must act within the restraints established by the laws of war.
9. Terrorism is a method of political action that uses violence against civilians and civilian infrastructure in order to influence behaviour, to inflict punishment or to exact revenge. The goal is to make the target group afraid of tomorrow and each other. Terrorism is an act, not an ideology.
10. One of the tragic paradoxes of the twentieth century is that those states which have most closely self-identified with the path of enlightenment have committed acts of barbarism that no modern terrorist group has yet been able to match.
11. Poverty is the state that causes terrorist to act. In and ideal polity, political action is based on dialogue, one which participants rationally seek to persuade other of the universal validity of their moral beliefs.
12. Terrorism is an abberation without long term disruption.

A Very Distinguished Collection.

The horrors of September 11th 2001 have resulted in terrorism and political violence as an area of study becoming increasingly topical. In terms of publishing output this has been a mixed blessing. The area has become "fashionable" but quantity has not always been matched by quality. The past year has, quite frankly, seen a lot of rubbish published - from both ends of the political spectrum.

This book goes some way towards redressing the balance. It is essentially a series of essays by various academics on various aspects of the "War on Terrorism". There is something for everyone here. You will almost certainly find something you agree with, but equally you will doubtless find something that will infuriate you! The book purposely draws on academics with unashamedly differing world views (many of whom are EXTREMELY distinguished - a real A list bunch). A chapter by the Marxists' favourite Noam Chomsky shares space with a chapter by the British uber-realist Colin Gray and another by that master of fair and balanced analysis, Lawrence Freedman (why has John Keegan got a knighthood when Freedman hasn't?). Kenneth Waltz and Robert O'Keohane both feature, as do half the International Politics department of Aberystwith University. You really would be hard pressed to find work by so many quality people in one place elsewhere.

There's somebody for everybody here - corny but true. These are the people who have been setting the standards for the debate - not the left wing editorials of the European press and the right wing columnists in the American print media that both sides seem to get so worked up about these days.

If you're interested in the debate on the "War on Terror" post September 11th, this book deserves to be on your shelves.

Truly beautiful pictures. It's almost a puzzle trying to figure out who they are. He takes people like Drew Barrymore and Jack Lemmon and turns them into glamourous, untouchable stars to be worshipped of the 30s and 40s. He has put stars back in the time when they were STARS. The intro by Dunne is heart warming and sad as he remembers the big movie era.

In 1994 celebrity photographer Len Prince began an ambitious project of photographing contemporary stars in costumes and settings that evoked the "golden" era of Hollywood. Using a Deardorff 8x10 and lighting techniques that pay homage to George Hurrell, he produced a magnificent collection of images which include Drew Barrymore, Jack Lemmon, Patrick Stewart and Martin Sheen. To say Prince's images are breathtaking would be nothing short of an understatement.

Not to be missed is Prince's comments on some of the sittings. My favorite being his sitting with "Miss Piggy," which includes the incident with the "buffet" and how he had to sustain himself through the afternoon shooting on a single grape.

The book introduction is by writer Dominick Dunne and is alone worth the price of the volume. In presenting Prince's work he recounts a time long gone when style was in vogue and Hollywood was the home of STARS.

This is not only a very beautiful coffee table book on Louisiana's wetlands, its wildlife, and people; but it couldn't have come at a more critical time. The chapter entitled "America's Atlantis" on New Orleans predicts exactly what happened to this great American city. If you've ever wanted to know more about not just our vanishing coastline, but also about Louisiana's unique culture, this is THE book!
