Cree Legend blended with Dreams

What a wonderful book to read to a child before bedtime! It reminded me of laying in the grass looking up at the stars and dreaming about things afar. The Cree legend elopes with the pursuit of your dreams, as rabbit and crane take you there.

An Absolute Gold Medal Performance

There has been so much written about the 1968 Olympics and the Olympic Project for Human Rights movement, but oftentimes from a critical perspective or by not placing it within a broader context of social movements that were gripping the world.

Author Douglass Hartmann offers a holistic perspective on the protest through impressive research and interviews, while stripping away the layers of myth which time brings to history.

This is an important volume for any reader who wants a complete understanding of this timless moment where sports and politics merged on the ultimate international stage.

The Best Book on the Topic . . .

This is by far the best book ever written on the topic of the 1968 Olympic protest by the Black athletes from San Jose State . . . Any question I ever had on the events surrounding John Carlos and Tommie Smith's so-called "Black Power" salute on the Olympic dais in Mexico City was found in this book, which speaks from a sociological and historical standpoint. I definitely will be able to use this book not only in my own studies, but in teaching the significant points of the protest to students at SJS.

Thanks, Dr. Hartmann!

My teaching "bible"

I teach English to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in a private school. This book is always close at hand to verify answers and to clarify nagging questions (do you capitalize northern when used with California? ) My edition is getting tattered through constant use. The book is well-organized and easy to understand. It covers everything from the correct use of commas to how to cite the internet in research papers. There are examples of use and examples of papers. The examples are interesting to read, and they teach something. What could be better? I have gotten the reputation of expert in my school because of this handbook! Other teachers send me notes asking for help with questions that come up in their classes. Should I tell them my secret?

For any writer, the best of the lot

Most major publishers produce a writing handbook, typically oriented toward college compostion classes. Most of them are very good or better. But among this tough competition, this is the best of the bunch. I teach advanced writing skills to professionals, mostly lawyers, and tell them to buy this book right after Strunk & White and Garner's Modern American Usage. After using Crews's book they all agree. (If you're wondering about "But" in the third sentence, "Crews's" in the fifth, and the placement of the period in the last sentence, below, look them up; Crews is glad to help.)
I agree completely with the anonymous reviewer in "My teaching "bible."

The story of Douglas Bader's fight to excel in the face of overwhelming odds is a most inspirational and uplifting experience.

It should have also been made into a movie as were two other stories of theis author-"The Dam Busters," and "The Great Escape."

Medical genetics is a difficult discipline in medicine. So many factuals, rules, syndromes and malformations which will make you dizzy. Professor Connor transforms all these difficulties into a concise textbook suitable for both study and reference. Medical graduates can find medical genetics a more approachable science. Strongly recommend for all medical graduates in addition to specialists.

A book for the modern biologist
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-23
This book will surely be thought of as the first structured presentation of principles of modern systems biology. This book introduces the application of Chemical Engineering to biologists and molecular biology and pharmacology of receptors to Chemical Engineers. The top-down picture of coupled processes is not only new to biologists but introduces a whole new way to look at biological problems. Especially the chapter which has cell migration explained introduces one to multi-dimensional thinking: cell mechanics, biochemistry, kinetic modeling and molecular biology all in the same problem. This may seem mystical to many. Would probably be read more by Engineers than biologists, who are yet to take the leap in thought to multi-dimensional science. This book would be remembered after many years to be a pioneer in the new science of systems biology, although it was written much before the Human Genome Project. Systems thinking and Chemical Engineering has been much beneficial in solving some very important biomedical problems like Drug Delivery(Robert Langer), Tumor Biology(Rakesh Jain) and Tissue Engineering(Robert Langer et.al.). Lauffenburger's work would be counted among these shining lights when these methods and tools bear fruit sooner than later.(Lauffenburger has already provided a glimpse of success of this approach when he worked with Amgen to produce a much pharmacokinetically improved biologic using physiologically based pharmacokinetic model coupled with cellular modeling of receptor-ligand trafficking and binding model)Nature,5 August 2002.Lauffenburger and Linderman are geniuses seeking support for "return to science" for biology.

This book conincides with the interview I had with Will Fowler in 1999. It outlines his life as a Reporter and how different the reporter is today as it was then. I really loved the book as it detailed the life of him as a reporter in the days when newspapers were the main source of information. He is a credit to his family and his father before him, Gene Fowler.

This is an excellent book, highly recommended for writers, journalists or media of any kind. Fowler's style pulls you in as he tells his story in an enjoyable, gripping, humorous and often heartbreaking fashion. Is he still with us ??? ... because I want to tell him personally how much I enjoy this book.

Honesty is the best economic and political policy
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-06
To revive the liberal movement in America and achieve future policy success, Princeton Professor Doug Massey argues that liberals need to articulate how their issue positions will speak and can speak to the everyday needs of people and how this has been done in the past.

Massey points out that the conservative movement benefits very few people, but effective marketing (and the subsequent positioning) has made all of the difference. People honestly believing that they are also included in the 'beneficiaries' of a conservative policy are not necessarily going to stop and read the very fine print.

But, it's the fine print which catches the 'everybody else' every single time. Conservative politicians talk about 'common people's lives' because they have learned this is what brings in the votes, but they remain as detached and self-absorbed as ever. They still want a majority of the wealth concentrated in a compact segment.

A key strength of Massey's work is that it recognizes the power of economic systems to bring about political and social transformation. Viewing markets as autonomous entities apart from politics ultimately proves disastrous and we need to be articulating how our world view will ultimately benefit other people in 'concrete ways' inside their own daily lives.

Much needed - especially for the 2006 Elections
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-03
The best part of the book is Dr. Massey's unflinching view of how the liberals essentially led to their own downfall thanks to the excesses of the 1970s identity politics and neglect of the working poor and middle-class.

His Chapter 3 is worth the price of the book as it outlines a great argument to the conservative's rallying cry of free markets. Liberals need to embrace the concept of "fair markets" as the best response to conservative slurs of liberals as being socialists.

Haig-Brown is the master of writing about the sport of fly fishing. Through this work you experience the man, the sport and the land. Though written years ago, it is timeless. His love of the rivers, lakes and their surroundings is shared and felt by anyone who goes afield today with the long rod.

A book that sticks in the mind.

I read this book in 1964. Shortly after, I mislaid it (gave it on loan) and never saw it again. However, it has stuck in my mind with startling clarity because of the mastery of the author both as a writer and as a fly angler. It is a collection of lucid essays about Roderick Haig-Brown as a boy and a young man learning the art of fly fishing from wonderfully drawn tutors . This is a book that a father would give to his son or an uncle to his nephew. One of the really great angling books of all time.
