REMARKABLE STORY

Review Date: 2007-02-05
It was a great surprise to find that there were no customer reviews for a book that was first published in 1987. This remarkable book is an insight into an American legend, Marjory Stoneman Douglas. She began as a young girl to write for the Miami Herald in 1915. The book shows how she was able to achieve a long history of publications and books to her credit. Additionally, this eminent conservationist who died in 1998 at age 108 has been honored with the saving of the Florida Everglades. This book is a must read for all American women because it provides insight into just what can be accomplished when one woman is motivated to take action.

When I moved to Florida in 1973 I almost immediately fell in love with the pine forests, the bayheads, the shallow lakes, the hardwood hammocks and the swamps. By then much damage had been done to the state and more was contemplated. The drainage canals around Miami, the cross Florida Barge Canal and other, often quite unfeasible schemes, had either been done, started and then scrapped, or were in the works. It seems like the temptation to "improve" Florida from the late 1800s on was so strong it was almost impossible to stop. A number of people had warned about the fragility of the Everglades and other Florida ecosystems, but few listened. However one talented writer with a remarkable background was able to help along the effort to protect the Everglades. Almost simultaneously with the establishment of Everglades National Park, Marjory Stoneman Douglas published her "Everglades: River of Grass'" now the standard work on the subject. In it she demonstrated that the Everglades was not a worthless swamp, but a vibrant ecological community with a long history. Her book's first printing was sold out within 2 months! Other fights were raging by the time I reached Florida- the Florida Barge Canal, of course, but also efforts to protect the Big Cypress and Fakahatchee Strand. Among the people involved were Archie Carr and his wife Marjorie Carr (the latter is included in a photo in the current book).

Marjory Stoneman Douglas, in her autobiography based on tape recordings by John Rothchild, subtitled "Voice of the River," was an institution in the Sunshine State and her book informs her many admirers of the struggles and triumphs she had in a life that spanned a whole century. It is a fascinating tale and full of associations with the most prominent names in Florida and in literature, newspaper publishing and politics. I recommend it highly to anyone, but especially those who are interested in the Florida that used to be.

This brings up another point, and a very sad one. I got to see some of what was left of Florida's natural environment, including Everglades National Park and the Ocala Scrub while I was in Florida (some in the company of Archie Carr). It was a ghost of what once was! Even though the citizens of Florida voted in monies to buy up thousands of acres of sensitive areas, there were many tragic losses. The state's wilderness has deteriorated further since I left it in 1978. I have no wish now to return and see the result, but what is left in Big Cypress, the Everglades, the Ocala Scrub, and many others, is there because of people like Marjory Stoneman Douglas!

If you are in a situation like me, then this might be the best book. I read some introductory long ago at university. A few years from now I needed to refresh on the subject and get a little deeper. I have browsed or read some other books, but this is now my number one choice for reference. It starts very gently with e.g. spelled out examples on matrix addition. It ends with (by my standards) advanced topics like eigenstructures, quadratic forms, generalized inverses etc. I admire the writing style which is compact, precise and at the same time a little relaxed.

A great introduction to mathematics of statistical analysis

There are a lot of people out there who do statistical analysis but who do not possess the mathematical knowledge underpinning a lot of what they are doing (i.e., linear algebra and some calculus). Most of the time people can get away with using stastical software as a sort of 'black box' and not worry about the math. But there are situations when having the background knowledge is crucial.

This book does an excellent job of facilitating self-study of the math underpinning multivariate statistical analysis ... namely, linear (matrix) algebra and some calculus. Each chapter has a set of questions and ALL of the answers are provided in the book (handy for self-study). The one slight critique of this book I can give is that I wish the book did more on the calculus aspects. However, that is a minor comment and the knowledge that this book imparts of linear algebra to self-learners is extremely valuable.

Maui has always been my favorite Hawaiian island, so when I came across this book on a recent trip to Hawaii, I bought it immediately. The photographs are as gorgeous as the island itself. The text is interesting, too. A great coffee table book.

My wife and I wnet to Maui for out 10 year anniversary. We bought this in the Maui Costco and it takes me back to the Island everytime I look through it. This is a wonderful book. The images are fantastic and very colorful. Looking through the book, I found several photos that resembled mine. It makes a wonderful coffee table book and spurs several converations about what we enjoyed about Maui. This is a must buy for those who have been to the Island.

I bought this book to give my five year old an over veiw of what to expect when we go to Hawaii. Great photographs. modest price. It is a small book, so don't expect a great big coffee table book. It could have had less volcano pictures

A well-designed book with a lot of value

If you've traveled the island of Maui at all, this picture book has the type of photographs you wish you had taken, plus plenty of aerial shots of places you've probably been. At only 8.25" wide and 6.75" tall, it's a relatively small book that doesn't take up a lot of room - which I like. And, considering that most of the pictures are either 5x7 or panoramic views (4" x 14.75") that take up two pages, I think it's a very well-designed book that provides a lot of value.

The picture selection is very diverse, and contrary to another review here, I don't think it has too many volcano pictures. Only 4 of the 43 images are about Haleakala, and even of those four the subject matter and image framing is diverse.

For anyone who's been to the island, flipping through the pages is like a trip down memory lane. In fact, with just about every picture you'll probably find yourself saying "I remember seeing that."

Considering the very inexpensive price, there's a lot of value here. It's just a great little book with a wide variety of well-selected images. You will first find yourself reliving the feelings and emotions you had when you were there, and then you will probably be looking at your calendar saying, "when can I go there again?"

This is an excellent book on the F-4. Lots of technical info and lots of pictures of the F-4 in Vietnam. This book covers the F-4E and the last chapter covers the F-4G Wild Weasel in Desert Storm. The Phantom is the all time greatest jet fighter the United States military ever had. I also reccomend "Spirit In The Skies" by Jon Lake.

For decades, many experienced teachers have tried to tell us that watching violence increases violence. A few voices in the mental health community have done the same but their voices haven't gotten the publicity they deserve. Details about the book are given in Dr. Walsh's review and the editorial reviews so I won't go into that here. I'll just say I highly recommend this for anyone who cares about children.

A Great Overview of the Science of Media Violence
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-18
It seems like everyone has an opinion about media violence. Some think that violence on the screen has no effect at all on our kids. Others believe that it is behind school violence, bullying and a widespread "culture of disrespect." The debates over media violence are often based on opinion or personal experience. What is needed is a thorough examination of what we know from the research. Dr. Gentile has provided just that resource. Scientists have been studying the impact of screen violence on children since the 1950s. Hundreds of studies have been completed and this book does an excellent job of synthesizing the results. Dr. Gentile enlisted the top researchers in the field, and each provides concise and readable summaries. This book is an excellent resource for parents, policy makers and academics who want to know what the science says about the effects of violence in television, movies, video games, music, and the Internet. Students and researchers will find the fifty five pages of references an invaluable resource.
This book makes an important contribution to the growing dialog about media violence. After reading this collection of chapters by the leading thinkers in the field, it is clear that violence on the screens does have an effect on our kids. We need to use this information to educate parents about the importance of supervising the viewing habits of children and youth. I recommend it highly.

Explorations in modern magick
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-08
Phillip Farber has called on his expertise in NLP, hypnosis, neuroscience and extensive experience in ceremonial magicks to create a textbook detailing an systems type approach to a complete system of magick. The beauty of this is that the system of magick that you develop using Meta-Magick is attuned to you as you are the moment you do the exercises. By deriving a magickal system from your own reflexes, innate responses, patterns of thought and socialization the system becomes immediately potent and effective without having to learn and internalize complex correspondences, godnames, rituals, etcetera. I have attended a number of Mr Farber's workshops over the past ten years or so and am overjoyed to have this material collected and organized into a complete system. I recommend this book to anyone who wants magick without the proprietary trappings that move it into the realm of religion.

Best starting point for spiritual self development with NLP

Review Date: 2008-08-15
Philip H. Farber has done a awesome job of combining memetics, magick and NLP. He has created his own magickal entity ATEM and shows you how to create your own by using the powers of ATEM. He does this with a combination of NLP, rituals, Aikido, body & energy work. The greatness in this book is that Philip Farber is able to make easy to use models out of age old rituals, but also transforms psychological NLP into the same easy to use rituals. By blending magick and NLP he shows his mastery of the subject and has created a guide for anyone aspiring to spiritual development. If I had to chose one book where to start, it will be Meta-Magick. Previously I recommended The Art of True Healing by Israel Regardie, but Meta-Magick is better.

In all of my introducory internet classes I have to introduce a textbook to fill the parts that I do not have the time to explain or need more clarification. Internet Explorer 5 at a Glance is that book. It is the best book available on the market for elementary and intermediate learners of Internet Explorer. With the help of lots of images it covers the main features of the browser. It also has a practical and to the point section on Frontpage Express. Outlook Express and Netmeeting are the other applications for which you can find more information in the book. Clear, visual, and to the point.
