Legal thriller that explores dark places in law and morality

This is an excellent legal thriller that integrates several different plot lines into a exciting climax and dark conclusion. Many suspense/mystery/psychological thriller books tend to have unsatisfying endings. However, Gerber avoids an unambiguous/everything-works-out ending. Instead, much like real life, the reader is left to grapple with ambiguity and conflicting views about pornography, human relationships, the mob, and justice. In addition to offering fast-paced writing, Gerber provides the details of important court decisions that illuminate the legal approach to these problems.

Fast moving book that reminds the reader of Grisham. Gerber is a former lawyer and currently a law professor who writes from experience and with wit. The main character grabs you.

I had played tennis for decades and had read many tennis books. This is one of the shortest, but nevertheless the best, in particular for beginners, who need not words, but tons of colored good photos, to show them, pic by pic, step by step, the correct grip and foot work. It's great. Highly recommended.

I used this book and the K edition in with my homeschooled 4 year old. They aren't a reading program. They are books with several child-friendly fairy tales in them, things like the Three Little Pigs, The Little Red Hen, The Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and one about the fisherman who catches a magic fish but is content with his life, yet his unhappy wife demands a succession of things from the fish, none of which bring her happiness or peace. Then in the back are exercises based on the stories. If you don't do them in ink, you can go back and do them again whenever you like.

Fun and Easy!

We are a homeschooling family, and used both the kindergarten and first grade versions of this book. They are enjoyable supplements to any reading program. For second grade, I purchased a rigorous curriculum, and we really do miss the Learn to Read with Classic Stories. We are buying the second grade book and are looking forward to it!

Terrific ethnographic work on a much ignored region

Do not let the stale title fool you here. Foley employs some wonderful ethnographic, qualitative research methods in this piece of work. Foley disobeys the old, archaic rules of the social sciences, in that he leaves his objectivitiy behind and immerses himself into the city of North Town (a mythical name). Texas is much more than Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The author shows us another side of the state. Foley focuses on the South Texas region and its much too often ignored Mexican American population. Many people do not realize the old, colonized treatment that Mexican Americans are still subjugated to and Foley makes a point of writing about this in his text. In addition to being an ethnographic account of the socially inequities that exist between the dominant Anglo population and the subordinate Mexican American population in North Town, this book is also an analysis and critique of an educational system. Foley demonstrates how the educational system in North Town perpetuates inequality and tracks its young people to take their assigned role in society according to their socioeconomic status and their ethnic background. Learning Capitalist Culture is a book for those not only interested in the social sciences, but those of us interested in research techniques and methodological approaches that are new, exciting, and part of a new kind of social science model.

Doug Foley wrote a very food account of a small town in this book. It is an ethnographic, and fuliflls that part. Mostyl the book discusess the race relation of the poor town, and delves into the politics that make such a racial divide possible. I highly recommend it!

This is a historical account of how inhumane the system of slavery was in the united states. It tells of the brutality and the sheer meanness of europeans who had everyday contact with African people. But the most poignant aspect of this account is that African people were put through this brutal treatment and still came out of the other end with more Humanity than the Oppressor. This is a must read for every person of African descent and for the last four generations of europeans who benefit from the privileges they enjoy as a result of that system.

A powerful book, on many levels.

This book, written in Douglass' later years, not only lifted my spirits but did a great deal to reestablish my faith in humanity. This was a man who had every opportunity, and reason, to be bitter and/or vengeful. He, instead, chose to fight, with his intellect and his golden tongue, for what he, and others chained in slavery and social subservience, rightfully disserved as a member of our human race. He was a man of conviction and inner strength who taught himself to write with an elegance that I have never seen equaled. I strongly recommend this book.

This book is brimming with thought-provoking messages that inspire the reader to build their testimony by going straight to the scriptures. Jack Christianson and Doug Bassett are a winning combination as they join forces to remind readers to be 'believing and behaving' Latter-day Saints, not just those who go through the motions. It's a wake-up call of why we're here, and what this life is all about. A sure-fire read for anyone who has gotten a little too comfortable with their testimony, and needs a fresh charge of their spiritual batteries. Excellent reading! The authors use scripture, counsel from prophets, and motivating stories to bring home the message of the power of the Book of Mormon, and how to use that power in our lives. Two thumbs up!

Light From Old Times

Review Date: 2001-01-18
J. C. Ryle writes from the perspective of a general that is beginning to see the battle slip away. As a bishop of the Church of England in the twilight of the 19th century, Ryle sees forces of influence working within his own church which will eventually bring about its demise. He defends the so-called evangelical wing of his church against attacks by the Tractarians and Latitudinarians and the "high churchmen". These groups and others in the 19th century Church of England were calling for a rapproachment with Rome.

Ryle calls the church back to its heritage by recounting in vivid style the testimony of the Marian martyrs of the church in the 16th century. He is particularly critical of attempts by the "high churchmen" of his day to reestablish an observance of the Lord's Table more in keeping with the Roman Catholic mass. He proves, to this readers satisfaction, that the litmus test issue which condemned Hooper, Latimer, Ridley et al was the "real presence" doctrine of the Lord's Supper. By refusing to confess that the elements of the table were changed by the office of the church into the real flesh-and-blood presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Marian martyrs sealed their doom.

Ryles work is prophetic when one considers the compromised condition of the Church of England today. It serves as a warning to all churches who are committed to an orthodox, historic understanding of the Gospel of Christ.

A "forgotten" part of church history

J. C. Ryle did a real service for the Christian church when he first wrote "Light From Old Times". This hard copy edition from Charles Nolan Publishing makes that Ryle classic available once again to a church that needs so desperatly to remember the lessons of history.

"Light from Old Times" sheds light on a time of church history that is not as well known as it should be. Who were the English reformers? Why did they die, being burned at the stake? What was the course of Anglican church history after the reformation? In "Light from Old Times" we see the foundations laid for the so called "high church" view in contrast to the evangelical reformed view of men like Hooper, Latimer, & Ridley. Ryle could see where the "high church" movement was going to take the Anglican church, and time has proved him correct. Given the current direction of some areas of the evangelical church, the church today would be wise to take heed to Ryle's warnings.

FROM THE AUTHOR

Born in Washington, D.C., to one of the First Families of Virginia, Littleton Q. Washington attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, before securing a clerkship at the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1855, he joined the U.S. Customs House in San Francisco and became embroiled in that city's Vigilante Uprising. Dismissed from office during James Buchanan's administration, Washington made a wild and dangerous journey home across Mexico, which was then entering a bloody reform war.
An ardent secessionist, Washington secured a lieutenant's commission in the Confederate Army and served at First Bull Run. He briefly edited the Richmond Examiner before joining the Confederate State Department where he worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. He knew most of the C.S. government's top people and was a close friend of Mary Chesnut.
This journal is a fascinating character study of one man caught up in the most turbulent period of American history.

Littleton Washington's Journal is the assembled character study of Littleton Q. Washington, an ardent secessionist who served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army at First Bull Run, and later worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. Though aptly edited by Douglas Gibboney for reader accessibility, and with informative historical notes, Littleton Washington's Journal is almost entirely Littleton's story in his own words. Highly recommended for Civil War buffs interested in seeing the Civil War from the perspective of one of its many soldiers.
