I am the leader of a women's small growth group bible study. I have used many books over the years with different groups. I have become real picky about the materials that I chose to teach from. This book has very brief lessons and so I plan to use two at a time. I also think that I may need to augment the book, but then I don't mind that at all. It just makes me know my material better and have it relate better to my particular group. I have not quite finished the book that we are in now, so I have not taught yet from John: The Way to True Life but it looks interesting and we all are looking forward to it.

I bought this book for every member of a Bible class that I am teaching, for women new to the Christian faith. They wanted to study the Scriptures but were intimidated by going through them alone. This study was more than I can ask for. It asks thoughtful questions that cause one to pause and consider the Scripture before moving on. It even has a leader's guide in the back of the book. For the price and the content, this book is great. Don't expect long expositions on the passages, just catalyst questions that make the reader apply the meaning of the Word to everyday life. Great for discussion oriented small groups or personal study. Buy this book for every member of the group, because everyone needs their own personal copies. Great Job, Mr. Connelly!

Earlier this year I purchased this book because off the internet review and read it in one day. Do not know the author and had never heard of her before, but this book made me cry and this book gave me hope. The journey Ms. Jones went through is not unlike the struggle of many other women. It was a blessing to me to read it.

ConSandra Jones has written a book that every woman should read. She has a testimony to tell and she opened up her heart and soul and shared some painful moments and experiencs to let other women know that they are not alone and it's okay to talk about it. She also vividly points out that GOD is the man to whom we should put all of our faith, trust and belief in. HE IS OUR ONLY SAVIOR!!! In this book, ConSandra gives clear instructions on how to start your journey to recover your lost soul, both spiritually and physically. Through faith and God's guidance, we can make it!!!
ConSanda Jones is a living example and a very beautiful person.

The Journey.. Delightful, Thought Provoking and Exciting!

Pros:

I love a good fantasy read! This had it all.. :) Witches, dragons, magic, elves,
pixies, dwarves, faeries, gnomes.. And of course Arch Enemies! OH MY! It is a very good
adult story, even if it were written for children!! After all, adults do need to keep in
touch with their 'inner child' and this book allows that! Also, I found this book to
be a wake-up call, in a most enjoyable way.

Cons:

Being an adult, I found the 'lessons' a little to lengthy. Children would need the
somewhat repetitive lesson with examples used. So, I state this under Cons, since I
am an adult, this was an adults perspective.

What can I say? I want More from Mae Salisbury!! MORE I say! ;) The end of the book
suggested another was to come, to include Abby, the little sister of Emma!

(The Journey: The Great Sword of Truth)

I loved this book!!!

I borrowed the book from a friend and once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. It's a very colorful book with characters and places that jump out at you.The plot is funny and suspenseful and as my children said when I read it to them kickin. Our most favorite character was the witch she gave you a different perspective on what a witch should be like.My children and myself enjoyed this book immensely so much in fact I'm reading it to my children again.

Finally, a different, unique animal for the new animal-giftbook genre à la classic cats, dainty dogs, and pranky polar bears. The funny photos paired with classic movie one-liners are sure to be a source of great enjoyment. The witty Qantas advertisements are a welcome blast-from-the-past and are just the icing on the cake.

The perfect gift...for all ages.

The Learning Leader

Douglas Reeves is no fool. He does not accept convention wisdom and openly challenges many beliefs that are taken for granted in the writings leadership. If you thought that this was another book among the thousands examining leadership, you will be wrong.

This book is for the cognoscente. It is not for readers first entering the field because it analyses the analyses and beliefs.

If you are looking for a different and challenging view of leadership, this book is worth the time and money.

Have you ever blamed a student, a parent, or the school's Social Economic Status (SES) for their lack of student achievement? Have you ever felt like you were in a hopeless school environment? Are you in a school district that students achieve but a few are still left behind? Do you want every student and teacher to achieve at his or her highest potential? The Learning Leader: How to focus school improvement for better results by Douglas B. Reeves is a book that will challenge your present thoughts about what a school is today, what it can be, and empower you to change the answers to the previous questions. This 180 page book presents the reader with current educational problems, both student and organizational. For each problem, The Learning Leader provides research-based solutions to school issue. From Mr. Reeve's research he developed a leadership framework called "The Leadership for Learning" framework. This framework is the backbone of the book. The reader willing, could use the research and framework to impact student learning and organizational practice. Chapters two through four will challenge you to look at school leadership from a different perspective, provide a historical account of leadership, and then present essential leadership skills and practices that will help you meet the challenges. Chapter five through seven suggest how to implement, execute, and monitor school improvement. Chapter eight speaks in depth about the leadership framework and how to use it to assess the effectiveness of your school improvement. I highly recommend this book to school leaders and teachers who truly want to be an impact player in school-age children's lives.

The Learning Leader: How To Focus School Improvement For Better Results by Douglas B. Reeves (Director of the Center for Performance Assessment, an international organization dedicated to improving student achievement and educational equity) is an 121-page compendium of tactics and strategies appropriate for teaching and guiding students to achieve their best efforts in the classroom regardless of the curriculum or subject being studied. Addressing important issues such as the dimensions of leadership, the dilemmas of grading, transformation between learning and leading, improving a school through leadership, and so much more, The Learning Leader acts as a complete mapping of the struggles often faced by educators in new schools, positions of combined administrative and "on the line" teaching. Critically important reading, especially for those new to teaching, The Learning Leader is very strongly recommended for student teachers seeking their teaching certificates, as well as recently repositioned teachers searching for an adaptive reference for effectively guiding of their students to improved scholastic results.

Review Date: 2008-08-30
If you've read "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris, you at least owe it to yourself to read this title by Douglas Wilson. Many people have mistaken Harris's book for a strong argument against Christianity but it is not that at all for Harris can't even give justification for arguing in the way that he does and Wilson shows why.

Wilson responds to Harris's rather weak arguments in "Letter from a Christian Citizen" both with wit and clear logic. If you were swept away by the supposed fortitude of Sam Harris' book, do yourself a favor and purchase Douglas Wilson's response and see how Harris measures up. You'll find, rather easily, that Wilson demolishes the arguments of Sam Harris and leaves him with nothing to stand on.

If you're an atheist, then you need to give an adequate answer to Wilson's arguments. If you're a Christian who was shook by "Letter to a Christian Nation", then you need to read Wilson's response and see just how poor Harris's arguments really are.

A Must-Have for every commited Christian

A wonderfully-articulated rebuttal to Sam Harris's "Letter to a Christian Nation." This book asks many questions of Harris, the most prominent being, "Where do you get your standards of morality if you believe in no absolutes?" It's great that there are courageous Christians willing to take a stand against those who slander the faith. A must-buy! (Also, see my review for "Letter to a Christian Nation" for more of my objections to Harris's arguments.)

"Past Tents: The Way We Camped" by Susan Snyder (director of Access Services in The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley) is a photographic and descriptive history of family outings during the first years of the automobile, and of campgrounds and campfires against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada, of the special gear and `helpful' hints for vacationing in the newly formed state and national parks and forests. "Past Tents" is a work of nostalgia, memory, and a yesteryear that saw the beginnings of ordinary people being able to sample and experience the extraordinary outdoors. An informed and entertaining history of early camping in the American West, "Past Tents" is superbly enhanced with historic photos and makes a welcome and much appreciated addition to academic and community library Popular Culture and American History collections.

Through letters to his dad, neighbors, friends and sons, Mas Masumoto has show us a glimps of organic farm life in California. Farm life is hard, long hours during harvest seasons under the hot Valley sun, in return, it gives little financial rewards. What makes Mas choose such hard way of life: the family tradition, a good harvest after hard labor, memory of good, delicious, mouth watering sun crest peaches, the smell of his father's shirt, or the values that he will pass on to his sons. I am not sure, but I sure taste the sweet, delicious sun crest peach and feel the joy after seeing people savoring his labor of love.
After reading this book and other books from Mas, I feel the urge to shop more organic products and help out local farmers. This is a good read for us city folks who never experience the hard life of farming and wish we also have memories of good delicious fruits picked at the perfect time, not riped from a truck.

A "Must Read" for Retired People/People Thinking About Retirement

[[ASIN:1601451253 LIFE AFTER WORK: Redefining Retirement - A step-by-step guide to balancing your life and achieving bliss in the Wisdom Years] is a "must read" for people thinking about retirement or even those who have been retired for a few years. I have been giving this book to family, friends and former colleagues, encouraging them (and their spouses) to read it. The feedback has been very rewarding. I have been retired for several years myself and thought I had it all figured out. Than I ran onto "Life After Work" and it opened my eyes to issues that I hadn't "figured out" after all. Even if retirement for you is off in the future sometime, this book can also alter your thinking about life "during" work.

My Review of "Life after Work" from my personal perspective.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-17
When I made the decision to retire after 34 years with my employer, I focused primarily on the financial side; "Can I afford to retire without working?"
Once that question was resolved with a resounding "Yes"; I asked myself "What am I going to do everyday in retirement". I didn't have a plan other than knowing that I wouldn't have to make the 3-4 hour round trip commute to Los Angeles everyday. Yes, I made a things-to-do-list, but life is more than task assignments. And, I knew that - that alone would not be fulfilling.
Then, I had the opportunity to read "Life after Work" (about 30 days before my actual retirement date), and it helped to put everything into perspective. I no longer had (in retirement): Purpose, a Structure / routine, Power, Authority or a title, People surrounding me all day long.
Reading this book helped me to gain insight and to develop a focus on "Me, my family and my friends" as my priority. Step by step, every emotion that I was feeling was discussed in such a way - that I thought this book was written specifically for me or anyone else that just thought - that everyday is about work. It's been about two months since I retired. I am now focused, enjoying retirement and am happy. I did set a goal to "Relax" for the first several months to develop my purpose for the next third of my life. Not sure I would have achieved a confident approach to a happy retirement as quickly, if I had not read & implemented the approach in "Life after Work".
I strongly recommend that you invest a little time, a few dollars and educate yourself on how to deal with all the unknowns as you transition to retirement.

Had I read "Life After Work" when I retired 7 years ago, the road to a happy retirement would have been with fewer bumps and bruises along the way. A successful retirement doesn't just happen. It requires thoughtful self examination and adjustment of priorities. Doug Fletcher provides a concise and practical guide in that regard. This book is an excellent resource for the struggling retiree or anyone considering retirement in the near future.
