"In Miserable Slavery" is the copilation of Thomas Thistlewoods 10,000 page diary that he kept while he was an overseer in colonial Jamaica. Douglas Hall has done an excellent job of distilling this document into a readable version of approxamately 300 pages. What we find in Thistlewood is comentary on everyday life in colonial Jamaica without racial bias. Thistlewood is frank about all aspects of his experience, from his sexual relations, to whom he dined with, and the intricate opperations of the plantations where he was employed, and the one which he finally owned. This is primary source material that gives a humanity to slaves and those who enslaved them, which is extremely rare and of high value to historians. All of that and it is excellent reading as well.

Thistlewood's diaries contain a fascinating account of his interaction with his slaves. Thistlewood was not an English Gentry, but an overseer who left his employ with the established Cope family and ventured on his own. He learned that he could hire his slaves to the crown, and gave them more freedom than most slave owners of the time. Because of his "good treatment"sic he developed some very interesting relationships with the slaves he owned. His meticulous documention of his sexual involvement with the slaves shows what a voracious man he was. It also showed how much power his favorite slave Phibba had.

Important book by a significant educator

Douglas Sloan has written an important book challenging educators and all thinking individuals to reconsider their biases. Sloan explains how our modern frame of mind is caught largely in jargon and limitation of a reductionistic-scientistic culture. In others words Sloan says modern man thinks in parts without any feeling for wholes. Sloan quotes countless physicists and scholars who are aware of the present day dilemma of our scientific thinking.
So Sloan asks the question how are we to regain wholeness in our thinking and thusly in our educational system if we continue with current modes of thinking.
Using Owen Barfield as his lap-dummy Sloan seeks to regain mankind's original participation in life, knowledge and relationships to the meaning of words, fantasy, and the seasons. But interestingly enough Sloan does this by first finding those positive discoveries in the science of education (child psychology, curriculum, participatory knowledge)and relates these to the new types of thinking in quantum physics as well as various spiritual ideas of wholeness.

Only through a renewal of the ways of thinking about our humanity, can science and education Education itself be transformed into an education of the Imagination. Sloan is clearly aware of the rhetoric of modern institutions and seeks a higher synthesis between past wisdom, honest science, and the new wholistic thinking found in the work of cutting edge minds and noble hearts.

This book is an exceptional and fair-minded treatment of the essential educational tasks at hand and a realistic solution if not the only solution to a renewal of educaiton.

A good book is one that has interesting useful information, a very good book gives you principles to apply to an analysis of phenomena, but a great book includes the latter but transforms the framework of peceptions so that you never look at things in the same way again. This is a great book.

This book, ostensibly a book about education, is much more than that. Sloan has written a superb critique of the western mind's fascination with the scientific world-view, and the belittling consequences that this fascination has had upon the human soul. It responds brilliantly both to the forces of fundamentalism and the forces of atheism. Written with a rare combination of elegance and clarity, it is a book that can open minds and hearts to a much deeper understanding of our civilization.

This book is for you whether you are a systems administrator, have a personal or a family computer. You will come away feeling comfortable and confident with firewalls and implementing security policy. And through the use of historical background and diagrams, a better understanding of your system overall. This easy read covering everything from children on the internet to industrial espionage details exactly what you are protecting against, how to identify "suspicous" activity and what to do if you've been victimized.

The wealth of easy to understand information in this book makes it a valuable asset to a wide range (i.e., levels of technical expertise) of Internet users.

The author sets the stage for addressing the topic of Internet Security by first covering the Internet basics in easy to read fashion. He explains that it's through the various Internet subsystems that Internet Security breaches can blossom and he addresses these potential risk areas in a methodical fashion.

By leaning towards simplicity and basics, the author is able to cover a wide range of security issues and a wide range of areas of security vulnerabilities. He then addresses means that are currently available to minimize these vulnerabilities.

It's obvious from reading the book that Internet Security will never be risk free and the author describes the things that are currently being pursued to make the Internet a more secure environment.

I feel that this book is a "must read" for anyone who uses the Internet whether they're security conscious or not. If they're currently not security conscious, or aware of their vulnerabilities, this book will serve as a real "eye-opener".

I have it on my desk and use it as a reference constantly when trying to figure out evolutionary genetics and/or quantitative genetics papers.

I've read quite a few series in my short 32 years and i'm looking forward to the rest of this story. I received the book in the mail 3 days ago and finished it last night after work. I just couldn't put it down. I was very excited as it's been a long time since I found something I couldn't put down. I like the story and the characters. One thing I didn't like about the book was that I couldn't keep on reading. I have to wait, patiently, until the next book comes out. I am anxiously waiting for the next book to be released. I may have to ration myself in the future so I can enjoy the book for a longer period of time. I may even have to go back and read the book over again just so i can sustain myself. LOL.
Mr. Croyle is a very talented author and I look forward to reading anything he writes. I'll definitely be recommending this book and anything else he writes to my friends. Good Luck Doug and keep the books coming.

Doug's book is an informal guide, almost like having a friend giving you the inside line on travel. We took his advice and stayed in the city of Frascati when visiting Rome. It is a charming city and only 30 minutes by train from the hustle and bustle of Rome. We stayed in a hotel recommended in the book and it was lovely, and the town has some delightful restaurants as well. The views of the aquaducts, mountains and vineyards on the train ride are memorable.
Check this book out, and get a copy of the "Streetwise Rome" map to help you around the city.

This guide is opinionated and thorough. It's the only guide we used in Italy on our last three trips. Don't want to carry a lot of guide books? Just take this one.

I planned a self guided tour of Italy this past October/November. In addition to the Open Road guide, I purchased Frommer's 2001 Italy guide book. The Open road book is very well organized and written, providing an overview of Italian history, food and culture. A suggested itinerary is provided for each major city and the recomendations contained therein are invaluable. The reviews of hotels and restaurants are accurate and reflect a range of prices and styles, with an emphasis on the off the beaten path local joints. They even have suggested dishs to order and the best rooms to request.

My trip was a smashing success and I used this book for the majority of my planning.

This is not just another "who done it"; Dr. Gerber adds many interesting details of Thomas Jefferson U., Jeffersonville, and surroundings. Much of this should evoke fond memories for former students at a real Virginia school and edifying insight for the rest of us-- Virginian or not. Dr. Gerber's eloquent use of language instills an academic tone to this well paced mystery. Several brief legal thoughts add to its instructive theme without distracting from the plot. The title points to a recurring theme of finance and politics in modern education. An interesting and good read.

True Christians Should Take Note...

Review Date: 2008-07-03
Mr. Douglas J. Del Tondo, Esq. has composed a very logical and good follow-up to his work in "Jesus Words Only." After exposing a major wound of the traditional Christian establishment with his work in "Jesus Words Only," this book, "Jesus Words on Salvation" provides the student (and hopefully all Christians are students) with a large amount of detailed information which offers answers to most questions which may arise after the almost certain reverberations one experiences upon accepting the "non-traditional" truth which is the crux of "Jesus Words Only."
"Jesus Words on Salvation" proves to be a quite scholarly effort by Mr. Del Tondo, and an effort which provides the reader with insight into some of the more thought provoking scriptures from the first century. Mr. Del Tondo's work is detailed, well-researched and worthy of the attention of all followers of the Messiah. I highly recommend that this book is one which has a place in any Christian library.

Everyone who calls himself a Christian should read this book!

Review Date: 2008-06-02
I applaud Douglas Del Tondo for writing this book. While this book is both spiritually challenging and even at times disturbing, it is very, very refreshing. Out of all the books I have read outside the Bible, Del Tondo's books have provoked the most thought. The chapters are logical and quickly read, but the questions and concepts presented will follow you for years.

Del Tondo's main focus is in pointing out the dangers of modern cheap grace theology and how it proponent need to destroy or contort Jesus' words in order to sustain its doctrines. Perhaps what is most interesting is that the concept of cheap grace is not new. Del Tondo, in "Jesus' Words on Salvation" and his previous book "Jesus Words Only" outlines in detail the struggles within the Christian Church's history to keep Jesus' true message of salvation pure. From the beginning of the Church, through its growth over the centuries, through the reformation, and to today, there has been an attempt (successfully) to marginalize Jesus' message. Del Tondo's works, like those in the centuries before him, are an effort to win back Christians to the message of Christ. The history presented by Del Tondo is eye opening. The book's preface documenting the changes of Tyndale and Martin Luther's theology from youth to maturity is fascinating. I recommend that the readers of this book take the time to read all of Del Tondo's footnotes.

Though, Del Tondo, challenges the concepts and doctrines of cheap grace, his call for believers to follow the words of Jesus are for every Christian and denomination. All of us need to be honest with ourselves and put our Lord and Savior, and his teachings, first. As Christians, we need to ask ourselves who we are following, do the writings of men, or our interpretations of those writings - even of Paul - take precedent over the clear words of our Savior? Do we filter Jesus words through Paul or our modern teachers, or should we filter their words through Jesus'? And if the messages differ, whose words should we follow? For me it's a simple answer, I will follow Jesus' words. For many Christians, however, Del Tondo's work is calling them to challenge their security and redirect their worship and devotion to God not man. A hard step for many to make in light of Jesus' message being obscured by today's Christianity, nevertheless honest consideration needs to be given to the arguments presented by Del Tondo. Everyone who calls himself a Christian should read this book.

What did Jesus actually say about salvation?

Review Date: 2008-05-10
'Just believe and you're saved!' Ever heard that? Sounds so neat! So EASY. 'What, so it doesn't matter what we do - we'll still be OK?'

A lot of people do believe that. Shortly before I read Doug Del Tondo's 'Jesus' Words Only' (the precedessor to this volume) I attended an evangelical church for a short time. One Sunday the pastor became very agitated, threw his arms up and yelled how grateful he was to Jesus for saving him - 'Thank you, thank you, Lord, I don't have to be good!' He actually said that. When I told him that I thought that, actually, we did have to be good, his response was 'I don't have to be perfect - I'm human!'.

So is it enough to just believe and we're saved? Or do we have to do more than that? 'The devils also believe, and tremble.' (James 2:19) And, as Doug so eloquently explains, real problems for the 'believe and you're saved' brigade come when we examine what Jesus Himself actually said about salvation, rather than what various human beings since then, often in positions of great power, would like to be the case...

Doug explains how the 'doctrine of cheap grace' claims we receive an irrevocable covering of all future sin upon faith alone, ie that Jesus' atoning blood washes us permanently, that, even if we sin, we will always be saved. And haven't human beings welcomed this message! Phew - doesn't matter what I do. Just believe and we're saved - phew again!

But, actually, Jesus' message is simple and unequivocal. As William Tyndale said: 'For God offereth mercy upon the condition that he (the listener) will mend his living.' Yes, there are conditions! William Tyndale was responsible for getting the Bible out to the masses, so we could read the actual words said rather than 'the commandments of men'. Needless to say, he wasn't popular with everyone...

We are expected to obey the will of our Father through our actions - through our WORKS. In the metaphor of the vine (John 15) we read that the branch that is not producing fruit is taken away; it's thrown outside and burned. Those who follow the doctrine of cheap grace don't want to hear this however...

As Doug shows us, Jesus' words do actually make things crystal clear. For example, in Matthew 7:21 we read, 'Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.'

As Doug says, the Sermon on the Mount isn't a list of 'impossible virtues.' It is a list of requirements for salvation clearly stated.

Human beings are always trying to bend the rules, and preachers are no exception, but of course the tragedy is that their wriggling risks not only their own damnation but also that of those they have ensnared with their attractive 'short-cut' route to heaven.

The doctrine of cheap grace is just 'chinese whispers'. This book takes us back to the source. Thank you, Doug.

I am the leader of a women's small growth group bible study. I have used many books over the years with different groups. I have become real picky about the materials that I chose to teach from. This book has very brief lessons and so I plan to use two at a time. I also think that I may need to augment the book, but then I don't mind that at all. It just makes me know my material better and have it relate better to my particular group. I have not quite finished the book that we are in now, so I have not taught yet from John: The Way to True Life but it looks interesting and we all are looking forward to it.

I bought this book for every member of a Bible class that I am teaching, for women new to the Christian faith. They wanted to study the Scriptures but were intimidated by going through them alone. This study was more than I can ask for. It asks thoughtful questions that cause one to pause and consider the Scripture before moving on. It even has a leader's guide in the back of the book. For the price and the content, this book is great. Don't expect long expositions on the passages, just catalyst questions that make the reader apply the meaning of the Word to everyday life. Great for discussion oriented small groups or personal study. Buy this book for every member of the group, because everyone needs their own personal copies. Great Job, Mr. Connelly!
