Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired?

When Norman Cousins wrote, "The capacity for hope is the most significant fact of life. It provides human beings with a sense of destination and the energy to get started," he offered us motivation to meet our challenges head-on. The Langenfelds do the same. With clarity, compassion, professionalism and a rich understanding born of personal experience, this husband and wife team examine the process of coming to terms with disease and chronic illness. Together, the authors help the reader to not only define their experience of illness, but also explore the complex interface with their physician, treatment options and the larger medical system. Their practical heads up and informational approach is laced with gentle humor as well as their own experiences which serve to reassure the reader that he or she is not alone.

The artful examination of the mind body connection offers a framework to understand this dynamic relationship. These chapters serve as an invitation and segway to enter the interior journey of discovering how to live with chronic illness and create meaning and purpose in one's life.

Living Better is written for people coping with illness, but its value extends to family caregivers, and beyond that, to those for whom life long self-care is a priority.

Living Better is a comprehensive book that explores all aspects of coping with an illness from the practical (dealing with hospitals, tests, finances) to the spiritual (finding a purpose, nurturing yourself). The authors own experiences with illness make this book a valuable companion to anyone who is trying to cope and live fully in spite of an illness.

Outstanding Patient and Non-patient Reference

Although I have never personally experienced any life-threatening illness, many of my close family members have. This book has proved to be an outstanding resouce, not only for managing the medical issues, but also for managing the confusing emotions that accompany severe illnesses whether they are experienced by you directly or experienced by someone you love. An outstanding reference manual for any family dealing with extreme illness.

Madam Fate brings to life so many pleasantly familiar images and ideas with which Caribbean people will identify. From the cover right into the text there is a powerful sense of local history and experiences. Even more refreshing is the way the book captures the reaity of the natural ecology of Jamaica in a way that few novels even attempt to do. I strongly recommend the book for any one, but particularly for those seeking to reconnect with their Caribbean homelands.

From the narrative perspective to the superb story-telling style (a lost art), to the imagery, to the beautifully rich characters, this book was absolutely incredible. I have never before seen such an original novel that forced you to pay attention (rather, made you want to read closely) but didn't come across like the writer is showing off. There seems to be a trend toward "cleverness," or writing as confusing a novel as possible thinking that makes it brilliance. Marcia Douglas reminds us that brilliance isn't forced. Madam Fate makes you question and think, and is amazingly and beautifully written.

Her novel feels like an afternoon in the sunshine. The warmth and its memory and effects stay with you long after you've finished it...and you find yourself wondering how Ida and Gracie are doing...

"madam Fate" is not any other book that will only make you have a good time reading it. It has a rare quality of authenticity that takes you at the roots of reality and yet, in a most subtle and minute way, has the "capability" of transferring the reader into a more exclusive and profound realm of magic and jamaican mysticism. The thin line between natural and surnatural becomes porous and one is experiencing a thrilling jolt at the realisation that, in "madam Fate," all the ingredients are at last exposed to allow the reader to peep directly into the magic reality of life. The emotions that are involved in this book are no stranger to such a liberating and revelatory effect that is conveyed onto the reader. Marcia Douglas has a gift of power and a keen sense of the beauty of life when it is approached properly and respectfully. I highly recommend this book. Since i am french, i also highly recommend this book to my compatriotes who are always on the lookout for "depaysement" and new visions of life. Ce livre est une petite merveille!

I am a big fan of Douglas Richardson. I have his prior book in this series, 'Plantagenet Ancestry'. Since I discovered that I was a direct descendent of Geoffrey Plantagenet, I am related to almost everyone in that entire book, and its a big book! In researching this book, I found out that I am also related to many Magna Charta signers. I have only had time to lightly peruse "Magna Charta Ancestry" but have already discovered many connections to my existing data. Douglas Richardson is a thorough researcher, I trust his efforts because his source citations are impeccable, and he readily states instances where there may be doubt. Since I have traced most of my direct family lines to Colonial America, Mr. Richardson's books are a great way to extend those lines back to Europe. When I do find conflicting information from material gathered from other sources, Douglas Richardson is invariably right, he is extremely careful in his research. All genealogies contain errors, but Mr. Richardson's books contain very few! I can hardly wait for the other books in this series!

In 2004, Richardson, a highly regarded specialist in royal and peerage genealogy with numerous published articles to his credit, brought out the first volume in a planned series -- _Plantagenet Ancestry,_ which tracked the descents of some 190 immigrants to the North American colonies from the Plantagenet monarchs of England, and which weighed in at 945 pages. This second installment is 150 pages thicker, and there are at least two more volumes in development, on descents from early feudal barons, and from the Emperor Charlemagne.

Any high school graduate knows the term "Magna Carta" (the "Great Charter") but most have probably only a hazy understanding of its key role as the foundation of the English legislative system (and therefore of our own), and that it established the principle that even the king, the highest authority in the land, was subject to the law. The baronial party that forced King John to sign the document in 1215 didn't trust him to live up to the limitations and conditions it laid down, and so they elected from among their own number twenty-five barons to monitor and enforce compliance. Of these twenty-five Sureties, seventeen had descendants past four generations; of those, there were two father-son pairs (Richard and Gilbert de Clare, earls of Hertford, and Roger and Hugh Bigod, earls of Norfolk), leaving fifteen distinct families that were ancestral to 238 17th century North American colonists. As with the first volume, the author's careful organization of a large mass of complex data makes this a comparatively easy book to use, either for ready-reference or for extended reading. All descendant families are organized alphabetically, numbered generationally from the Magna Carta Surety, with emphasis on patrilineal descents. This is not a listing of all descendants in each generation; grandchildren without descendants themselves, for instance, are excluded. Citation of sources -- mostly the original sources -- is very extensive and the bibliography runs to nearly 100 large-size pages.

With such a wide-ranging project, with so many sources being perused, one might hope for new discoveries, and there are many included in the book. Some, of course are minor corrections, but at least a dozen are noteworthy, especially as they affect the Bohun, de Verdun, Grey, Hastings, Pole, FitzMaurice, and Mowbray families.

As with _Plantagenet Ancestry,_ after borrowing it for review, I bought a copy of this one for myself and I shall be waiting eagerly for subsequent volumes in the series.

In my opinion Douglas Richarson has provided a well researched book. It will be a main source of reference for years to come.
I was hoping to see more "new lines", but I guess the reality is there just is not that many lines out there that have not been researched. The $100.00 US price tag was well worth spending. L.R. Anderson,

I have used this book and its previous edition for several years now. It is a classic and a must have for radiologists doing CNS MRI, especially general radiologists. The illustrations are excellent, the text clear and to the point and the cross references between cases are most helpful. When reading a case, this is the first book I pick up for help (there are 7 other books in my office)and generally the only one I need. I recommend this without reservation.

I have used this book for reviewing cases in prepartion for neuroradiology and neurosurgery. It offers a wonderful discourse on differential diagnosis for various aspects of neuroradiology and various CNS disease states.
The text is rich with detail and focuses on the most important aspects required for remembering the pathology. The text is also extensively and internally referenced where additional cases can easily be looked up in order to jog one's memory of former pathology. I would highly recommend this text, as others did to me, for aspiring neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists. This text is truly multi-functional as it offers a wonderful integration of neuroradiology, pathology, clinical presentation, and epidemiology.

My mother grew up in Rossville and was in school during the time this book was written. My grandmother taught in the Rossville schools for over 30 years. My grandfather, aunts, cousins and brother and sisters all attended Rossville High School. I grew up on stories of how great the state championship was in the 50's and it was fun to read about a time that is long gone but not forgotten. I graduated from Rossville in 1985 and although we didn't have a championship team, we had a lot of pride in our teams and band. It is sad that it is all gone. Thanks to the author and all the contributors for bringing to us a story of a great bunch of coaches, players, students and faculty.

The right answer to many QuickBooks questions is at hand.

As a full time QuickBooks instructor for over 10 years, there have been times when I wanted a reference to validate or guide me to the best solution on practical problems that I encountered with a client's company file. This book is the answer. Mr. Sleeter has created a roadmap for both new and experienced QuickBooks accountants, consultants, and power users that can save them from many wasted hours learning QuickBooks by trial and error, or having to go back to re-enter data because the solution they tried does not work.
It goes beyond mechanical matters and deals with utilizing QuickBooks properly from an accounting, business, and technical point of view, for example finding and correcting errors during bank reconciliation. This structured resource covers the best way to work with real issues, some of which are not covered in the instruction manual like setting up customer and vendor opening balances to track aging, warning about memo information in journal entries, adjusting income accounts, and other tricky transactions. Important topics are "Things Accountants Must Know" and "Troubleshooting Data Files".
The Consultant's Reference Guide starts by describing new features of the current edition of QuickBooks, and logically progresses through company file setup and special setup issues. Numerous examples show the reader what action to take to ensure data accuracy when working with complex problems. The easy to read graphics, step-by-step explanations and organization of the contents make it worthwhile as both reference and self-paced tutorial.
Subjects covered provide an excellent balance of information like fundamental details of setting up payroll through advanced issues of networking QuickBooks and QuickBooks Point of Sale. If you are an accountant or provide QuickBooks professional services owning this book will give you confidence that the right answer to many QuickBooks questions is at hand.

See my review for Spectrum Math Grade 7....

After quickly plowing through the 7th grade book, my 12-yr old has been learning the majority of his math via Spectrum Grade 8. Problems, problems, & more problems is the key to this book's effectiveness.

Spectrum Gr 8 steps up the complexity of the math problems in such a way that we're spending a lot more time with this book than with Spectrum 7. The 7th grade book was an *essential* stepping stone, and we used it from cover to cover, but we didn't bother doing all of the practice problems.

With the Grade 8 book, a good tactic seems to be to cover all the material once (using half or a third of the math problems provided in each section), & then moving back through the book a second time (or a third, or a fourth!), reinforcing lessons learned with the neverending supply of practice problems.

This repetition, spaced out over time (as opposed to covering a topic thoroughly but never revisiting it), is probably the best way to develop math skills that last a lifetime. Particularly if your kid isn't an overly exuberant math lover.

Love these math books!

I'm homeschooling and I could go on the road with the Spectrum books. After trying several different curriculums, I stumbled across these books in the bookstore. They were an answer to prayer. There is an answer key in the back, so I haven't had to haul around a huge teachers edition. These books, all of them (we homeschool a 1st grader and 3rd grader and we use Spectrum Spelling, Writing, Reading, Language Arts, Vocabulary, Phonics, and Math) are exactly what we needed. My first grader LOVES the reading books. We ordered both, the regular Spectrum, and the one written by Mercer Meyer with the Little Critter characters. Childrens books (especially the ones written at her level) are SO expensive, and these reading books come with so many stories, and they have exercises for reading comprehension. I REALLY can't say enough. One thing I'd like to see them do? Add science and social studies/ history and geography to their mix... art and music while we are at it!!

Math Prep - Great for Overcoming Standardized Tests

You should first ensure you either coach your first grader with basic addition, subtraction and arithmetic skills. Other books, flash cards, Math Big Workbooks, Speak N Math (remember Texas Instruments) will help here.

In this test prep there are examples and timed exercises. There are developmental exercises but needs parental instructions. Builds problem-solving skills they already have, so it hones or sharpens their existing skills and an answer key is included.

Spectrum is the standard for standardized test preps.
